Woodturning Cypress Turned Carved Pyrography Bowl

  • So a goblet wasn't enough? Well, lets complete a set and make a bowl!! And if we're making a bowl, we might as well carve some spirals into it. And if we're carving it, we might as well also do some pyrography!! This Cypress bowl has it all!! And it even rhymes.

    Hello Yuval, Another winner. Elegant and attractive. Those dots must have taken forever to do. The colour and grain; who would have guessed it from that scruffy half log?

      Thanks Glenn!! I have to admit the depth of colour in that wood once I applied the oil on it took me by surprise as well, I wasn't expecting it. The dots only took me a back aching 5 hours to complete, in two sittings.

      Thank you Gord!! I'm thinking (after watching many of your videos) to start adding more compounded segmenting pieces. I even bought a small band saw so I could cut some wood strips, but I'm too scared to start, it looks such a daunting work!!

    Very nice Yuval, you excel yourself once again. Also, you have given me an idea for something to make my wife for Valentine's Day, only smaller to hold in one's hand, and something to do with our favourite medicinal herb. Nice to see I am not the only one that interacts with my kids in the workshop, lol.

    Pretty awesome piece Yuval! I especially like the effect you gave it by leaving the knots untouched on the textured areas. It made a huge impact on the overall design. Nice job! Thanks, V

      Thank you Ron!! It did indeed took a few hours, but not too many. When I get in the "zone" I don't really feel the passage of time, or even the cold (or heat) of the shop, my mind disconnects.

    Hi Yuval, Amazing. The Cypres just popped when you put the oil on it and the pyrography must have taken hours. Great work. Cheers, Huw

      Thank you!! The colours in the wood sure took me by surprise, I wasn't expecting it. It took me about 5 hours in 2 sittings to do all the dots. The first time really I use a pyrography element in my turning, but I think I need to explore it more.

    Where you took the chisel, wouldn't a goat foot / V-chisel (you get it at different angles 60 ° and 90 °) better?

      Thank you Nik!! Yeah, my day job is still doing guided tours in Rome, in my own company, and it pays the bills, but it is very time consuming, being out of the house all hours of the day, 7 days a week. But I had a few days off now, hence the new videos :)

    Wow, very nice. What were the rotary bits that you used for the carving?

      Thank you Scott! Those were simple carbide carving bits, and the cheap one you get with the tools or order from China. I have some better quality tool, and I'll use them soon on some piercing project.

    Cypress has nice grain. Is it not a very soft wood?

      Is is quite soft, I normally use it for tests, and it sands well manually, so easy wood to carve into.

      Thanks Ian!! Yeah, it took a few. I would say about 2 hours of turning in total, and about 5 hours of burning. Add about an hour or two for hand sanding (I should really find a better solution) and you've got this bowl thingy :)

      Thanks Miss T!! I used boiled linseed oil... It's what I use on most of my projects, I'm still not into high gloss lasting finishes...
