- I turn a segmented bowl full of stars. The feature ring has 8 stars in it. The bowl is made from American Walnut Peruvian Walnut and Maple. The bowl is finished using Minwax Wipe on Poly.

Getting all those pieces cut correctly so that they fit together so perfectly is just amazing. I don't think I could do it once let alone 6 or 8 times! The result is simply beautiful!!

I’m so jealous Gary.. you make things look so easy and I know it’s time consuming & hard work. U have to really enjoy it because it takes a lot of time. I love the pattern of this bowl. Amazing how you cut them out. Love watching a master at work!!! Thanks for showing and giving us a lesson at the same time.

I like the way you combine turning with straight cut carpentry to make a three dimensional puzzle. Beautiful piece

I am a brand new wood turner. I have just completed my first pen and my first little bowl! Thank you so much for the inspiration. I will retire from my career next year, and I look forward to many years of making similar beautiful creations!
Congrats on the pen and the bowl. Also for the upcoming retirement wher every day is Saturday except for Sunday 😄

What a lovely bowl! Your video is such an immediately understood example of the uses of basic math and geometry. I hope kids see this and go, AHA! That's what it's good for! I mean, math makes up everything we touch--as does design, for that matter. This is just a lovely reason to use it. (This from a vintage mechanical engineer. ;))
Thank you Nan, I have always loved math especially geometry since I was a kid.
As a "vintage" wood pattern maker I used it every day and still use it since I retired.
And I worked hand in hand with many mechanical engineers.

I like using Montana woods, pine, juniper, Box elder, mountain mahogany and a new one Russian Olive, a weed so to speak but was planted in the early days for wind / snow shelter like carrigandas. RO is brown with distinctive lines, turns nice. Take care as I love your work and may try your star bowl. Beautiful

I know it took more time to assemble all the parts, but I appreciate that you saved materials by doing so, and avoided turning the bulk of your wood into chips. Well done, and quite a beautiful vessel.
When using segments one big advantage is you have a lot less material to turn away. The cost of some of the hardwood makes it a real savings to do it like this.
