    I love how it's just a simple kitchen item but made so nicely! That's what makes it so much warmer compared to one bought in a store. Would make such an awesome gift too)

    Oh my goodness, that is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL. Fun to watch, but the finished project is one of the prettiest rolling pins I've ever seen. An heirloom to be cherished and passed down for generations. Thank you for sharing.

    Probably the most beautiful rolling pin in the word.
    The idea of taking different colours pieces of wood, and glue them diagonally together, is genius!!

    I'll be honest, I was distracted and didn't see the main barrel at the end of turning. So I got a "reveal" at the end. I did not see that pattern coming. Stunning. And so clever. It made me exclaim out loud.

      he didn't leave space to clean them up, those bearings are gonna roll smoothly at first but are also going to get full of flour and lock up eventually :(

      I watched at 2x speed so may have missed it -> how did he index the handles to get such a good match? If I eyeballed a pair like that in reverse it would not turn out even.

      If it’s anything like his other videos, he likely made a stencil and freehanded the cutting until they matched his pattern, which is bonkers good in its own right.
      Or he just guessed and is such a great artist he nailed it. Either or.

      @@ZeketheZealot a reverse stencil would be the way I'd go if I owned a lathe, just didn't see him use one. Could be edited out for brevity. In the case of the latter being a possibility - I had a buddy in college that would do manuscripts in pen, freehand. Just mind-blowing talent. I feel like a kid with blunt crayons sometimes. Ha!

    This is a work of art but, from a practical perspective in a working kitchen, I would slope the sides to create a solid piece. Having a solid piece with no bearings allows the chef to roll the dough accurately whereas a rolling pin with bearings would merely push the dough. Again, a beautiful work art.

      I agree with you. Also, there’s a gap between the handles and the face of the rolling pin that would be hard to clean long-term. But I think it’s a beautiful work of art.

      When I was training as a chef, my friend had a rolling pin like the one in the video. I never understood why she had such a hard time with rolling out dough till I tried using her rolling pin.

      Well it depends on the type of dough you need to roll. For your typical butter cookie dough this type of roller requieres less efort. For croissants on the other end this would be difficult to get an even thin spread.

      Maybe never rolled dough.
      At first, I was thinking Kickass Peppermill! when I saw the screw being glued in.-
      Excellent technique, though- THIS is what you do with scraps,,, Not those cheap videos where they make a useless ugly table or crappy sheetrock screwed up boxes, and call them jewelry boxes.

      It is a bit of a wallhanger to be fair; bearings on a rolling pin is a terrible idea, it's off-balance, asymmetrical and oversized for anything you're likely to be preparing

    He put bearings in it. Is anyone surprised? This man is very skilled and is very steady. If you watch those passes with the roughing gouge it's like watching automation. He has the hands of a surgeon, in purple gloves.

    I skip the bearings. Glue the handles directly to the rolling pin. Professional bakers prefer solid handles on their rolling pins. They can’t roll the dough even with bearing type handles as that only pushes the dough instead of rolling it.

      Yes, this! It's not a skateboard - those bearings just make the whole thing a disaster to use. Just a dowel works better, or a tapered one like a simple French pin.

      Also, at some time the pin will be immersed in water. Not good for metal components.

      @@jzero4813 well any professional would wipe it down with a damp cloth, then again a professional would want the handles solid to the roller for proper control so you’re probably right …. amateurs wash their pins 🙄

    I'm no stranger to multiple glue-ups per workpiece, Sadly, Most people, other than woodworkers, don't fully apricate how much time and effort goes into projects like that.

      this is not as long as you think. You work on the cuts, you glue the thing, you clamp then you wait a few hours for the glue to cure. Most of the time is spent waiting.
      Also notice at 0:56 that he does not even need to align the pieces because it's going to be cut anyway.

    So happy to see a suggestion of mass / multiple production in the background of your video. You are an immensely and naturally talented woodworker and I hope you can make a career out of your art. Just promise me one thing, please don't start putting rubbish in coloured resin and turning it.

      I agree about the resin. It certainly has its place but seeing it in turning and the mess it produces makes me uneasy.
      Who would voluntarily work with resin when there is a material as fabulous as wood?

    I fell in love with the design! Using ball bearings may not be a practical idea. The rolling pins often get greasy, oily while being used and need to be cleaned, washed even. Ball bearings may rust in the long term.

      Yep, the bearings will likely rust and seize over time, should have used a ceramic bearing.
