To be fair Roy's game still hasn't received an English translation. Same almost half the Fire Emblem series. Mother 1 and 2 were already released outside of Japan.
Maybe we'll get gba games for Nintendo Switch online and get both Mother 3 and FE6 translations at some point. Please Nintendo?

I once went to the pawn shop for a GameCube memory card for Mario sunshine, and found a save file for 100% COMPLETE SMASH BROS MELEE. I am so lucky.

I remember when me and my brother had no idea that there were secret characters, we would play the game regularlly, we had just gotten it. I, on accident, finished the first level. AND LUIGI APPEARED AND IT BLEW OUR MINDS!
Nice. And honestly, I swear it took me 8 years to unlock all the characters in Brawl. I had it in the past and would play it on and off. And it was so unexpected to see Wolf appear as a challenger and I was so relieved that I don’t really have to play the game anymore

I've heard some people say it was because you could look up Peach's skirt.
I have no way of proving or debunking if this was the reason, but I think that would be a pretty stupid reason. Street Fighter straight up showed the fighters getting bloodied and beaten eith messed up faces and that was rated K-A if I recall correctly. The ratings board makes no sense. For games or movies.

I know, right? I only had, I think, 1 controller at the time so I had to wait the full 20 hours for disappointment.
The Neverending Twilight I remember when I both did a longplay for my channel and back when I unlocked it as a kid I only plugged in 2 controllers and let to go do shopping, meetings, and stuff around the house because I wasn't aware at the time that the amount of time required was divided among human players.

In the year 2006, I was 4 years old. I don’t remember exactly when, but my parents got me a GameCube with a few games, the first was smash bros melee. The intro blew me away despite not knowing any of the characters or locations but it had a lasting impact on me. The only thing I really knew about video games back then was Pokemon and let me tell you, seeing mewtwo’s silhouette on the challenger approaching screen made me jump. Melee is etched into the very fabric of my soul and if not for it I might’ve been a very different person today.
I was 11 when Melee came out. I can tell you how stoked I was when it came out.
I had just gotten back from Iraq and got Smash Bros Melee in 2003. It's still my all-time favorite game.
I Still find it so crazy and mind boggling as to how Melee had such a short developed time.

i think people who shit on other smash games (in the competitive sense) are childish. this goes for melee players who hate every other game and smash 4 players who hate melee.
tyler Yeah fr just let us like what we like. Melee is definitely not my preferred smash game but I don't hate on people for liking it.
Tbh, some comp players do like other smash games and give them a try now and then (including the mods). But those who piss on Brawl or Smash 4 because there isn't a comp scene kinda are just asking to be regressive. I pay them no mind because I like a balanced diet of multiplayer and single player. Not just multiplayer.
Ben Link smash 4's competitive scene is pretty big, not as big as melee's, but its up there. though, when smash ultimate comes out i think it will end up obsolete like brawl.
I'll tolerate hate but only in the context of what makes a good smash game for competitive mode. This never gets asked in chess because it's already decided on.

I'd argue, that the adventure mode in melee has more in common with the single player mode in the first smash game.
In both you fight every character, which doesn't have to be unlocked and there are no random parts.
Wavedashing wasn't an oversight, Nintendo Power Volume 228 Page 62, an interview with Sakurai. States "We knew you could wavedash during the development period" I don't like all this "It's a glitch that people abuse." Outside of wavedashing, I can't think of any others that are actual glitches. L-Cancelling was in 64 (Called Z-Cancelling), and maybe wobbling with the Ice Climbers was a real oversight, that's why it was banned for a while.
I'm just done with the "Eww, Melee fanboys" stereotype. I prefer brawl too tbh, I just don't like seeing all the hate in either direction ^^;

Also, do you know what wavedashing does? It moves you better than dashing. In fact, it's quite easy to do, but I understand that it feels unnatural at first. Could you explain how it actually ruins the game for you?
EDIT: Though lots of Smash Articles define it as, "A Physics Exploit," which I too agree that sounds like semantics, I don't think it's particularly glitchy. The game is naturally slippery, and they just coded that if you air dodge into the ground (Wavelanding) the game assumes you've landed, you just conserve all your momentum, so you slide. I don't think it'd have been hard to add some line of code saying "If in airdodge ( add landing lag )" and it would've been effectively removed, no amount of sliding would make it effective if you couldn't act out of it so easily.
Also, why are people so hellbent that it is the sole reason the game is bad/wrong/worth complaining about, it's just part of the game, you don't have to like it, but respect those that do like it.
Unrelated: Look up the Ness Yoyo Glitch, if one would complain about glitches, Ness gets infinite range if he pulls this off, but it's obviously very difficult and not worth practicing except for the lolz.
Pixie Panda Plush Wavedashing aint game breaking and it doesnt always move you quicker than dashing, just look at Peachs wavedash it barely goes anywhere. Wavedashing is simply a positioning tool, you wont get a game breaking gap just from learning it lol, like everything you have to learn how to use it effectively or its useless on its own.
Doesn’t really matter if we label it a glitch or not tbh, it makes the game more fun nonetheless.

We can all agree that the series overall is amazing. I love each and every entry. But like with a things you love, there's always going to be one you prefer the most. And that's okay. I get why people love Melee the most. I also get why people love Brawl the most. There's something for everyone here.
Once Ultimate drops here in a few days, I think we'll all be meeting in the middle. I have a feeling that game is going to be everyone's preferred entry.

I think nostalgia plays a huge role in the love for Melee, like your preference for Brawl. Old people like me grew up with Melee, and it was quite some time between Melee and Brawl, so it's what we had for a long time.

This game was the shit. So many hours of me and brothers playing vs matches.
I grew up with melee and brawl and I kept going back to melee without knowing anything about the competitive scene, the game just felt better. You could keep your dashing momentum while jumping!
kirjian that’s exactly how I was. I remember when I first got brawl and I was like “why is this so slow?” The pace was thrilling in Melee. Launching your opponent and catching up to them within a second to deal more damage was just so much fun, and I think brawl lost that thrilling feeling with its speed.

Brawl was my first smash game and carries the most nostalgia, ultimate is my favorite semi competitive smash (playing my friends with 2 stock no items omega only and actually trying we’re just bad) and melee is the best comp game. I only have 1 friend who plays melee and he won a bunch of local tournaments. But what character did he use? Roy. Our boy.

The depth in Melee wasn't really by mistake, a lot of it was by design, just not Sakurai's. I can't remember if it was Iwata or someone else, but they basically poopoo'd a lot of Sakurai's attempts to remove the depth in it. L-canceling was in SSB64, where it removed all landing lag except the neutral landing animation and in Melee, it halved the landing lag. It was by design.
Wavedashing was actually a natural result on how diagonal air dodging worked. They "caught" it during development and even named it Super Land Dash (or something like it) in the debug mode. There were relatively few universal techniques all/most characters can use in Melee that was by accident.
I don't think Wobbling was ever intended though. Or multi-shining, wall-teching, Jigglypuff R-air spamming, Peach F-Smash stalling, phantom hits, freeze glitch, hitstun ceilings, or the wonky as hell collision detection on the Battlefield ledges.
So it is the other developers to blame for Melee's crazier fans?
@@jacobmonks3722 multishine kinda falls into the same category as all the things op listed though. You could multishine in 64, but reversed, shine cancelled jump instead of jump cancelling shine like it does in melee. Abuse this intentional mechanic built off of 64's... you got multishine.

@@KidSnivy69 100%. Sakurai has stated he did not like the crazy fans of melee and the way they played. Which is why he intentionally slowed brawl down and added tripping to discourage the "crazy competitive fans" as he called them...

The one thing I love about melee is the Mario character design. It's my favorite definitive Mario design.
Poor smash 64 lol. It's the game that was more of a prototype that no one plays anymore or take about but still loved when it came out and started the series...but true Melee is the first modern smash bros, plus it's a GameCube game so of course it's amazing!
64 is still hanging on believe it or not, I mean I still play it and Id consider it my 2nd favorite game right behind Melee. If it ever got a rerelease I can see it blossom into relevancy once again, the only real time it gets a considerable attention nowadays is in the Genesis line up and it does pretty well in viewership.
It's pretty much like Street Fighter 1. Everyone thought it was pretty neat, but then when Street Fighter 2 came out it blew the gaming community out of the water.
Shark Tale is also a game for the Gamecube.

Honestly, I really don't like Melee all that much. People say that the gameplay is "perfect", but I find it hard to move my character quickly, and everyone seems like a fast faller. I feel like I have to be a professional to enjoy the game. I can't casually play Melee and find enjoyment in it. Ultimate, however, looks like it will be a heck of a deal.

As a Melee fan, I totally getcha! Casually the game feels stiff, it frustrated me going back. When I learned how to wavedash, it became my favorite Smash personally, but casually it’s not as nice as more modern smashes.
I think if Ultimate had less lag on wavelanding to allow wavedash, both modern and melee fans would be happy. If not, all good, Ultimate still looks sick to me.
I agree with you. I think that Melee is very upstanding for high-level players, but it's not open to just anyone. Smash Brawl was comparatively slow, and the competitive scene wasn't very large, and Smash 4 could appeal to low-level Smash players, but it didn't have a vast array of tech. I am hoping that Ultimate finds a middle ground between all of these games and creates the best Smash yet.
I agree! We prefer to play smash 4 casually, but sometimes enjoy playing melee to practice the pro mechanics, even if we arent really good at them.
My favorite addition from Melee were the trophies. I can't wait to see them come back in Ultimate! Right? RIGHT?

This is honestly the best review I’ve ever listened to for Melee from a casual perspective. People often slam Melee saying that the only good thing about it is the competitive play, but the casual play really is just as good. As a competitive player myself, thank you for giving such a genuine review of Melee as a whole without getting wrapped up in the “politics” of the competitive scene lol

Yeah, I agree with pretty much all you said. I like the newer games better, but the jump from 64 to Melee is truly mindblowing. As good as all Smash games are, the impact Melee had on the series will never be topped. And no amount of fanboys who hate everything that isn't Melee is going to make me forget that.

It just gets a tad irritating. I totally love and respect fans of all smash games. I love how I’m literally one year older then Scott but version of Smash is my forever favorite. Probably because I got a gamecube at Blockbuster with a copy of smash and no memory card. Me and my buddies still play this. Brawl didn’t have this impression. So crazy to see how much 1 year makes a difference when it comes to nostalgia.
I think mechanically melee is still the best and sharpest even to this day
I spent some time learning some advanced stuff for Melee. The problem is that it takes a ton of time to master even the simplest techniques like L- cancels. I've learned enough that I can understand high level matches easily, but couldn't actually pull off the crazy difficult tech they do.

L cancels aren' too hard imo. Doing a SHFFL'd aerial consistently at the start sure, but at the end of the day l cancels are just press l, r, or z lol

Octavio Gonzalez I happen to be very good at Tekken actually, one of my favorite series. I didn't say I was bad a Melee either. I've probably spent hundreds of hours playing and practicing. My point was that I'm not as good as the pros, who have spent the last decade at least perfecting their skills. You're just trying to act elitest about it.

Yeah, I pretty much agree with this video.
I got into Melee in late 2004, and it kick-started my long-lasting love for Smash Bros..
Melee is easily one of the best examples of a quality sequel. Take the core ideas of Smash 64 and crank it up to 15. There is so much expansion to it.
Smash 4 is my favorite Smash game, followed by Brawl, but Super Smash Bros. Melee is unquestionably the most impressive jump from one Smash game to the next.
Melee is truly a masterpiece. Still relevant even today. Very few games of that kind of life span.
Just passing by to remind you of how beautiful it is listening to Scott and the way he talks about Smash Bros. It's just great, you can see how passionate he is when it comes to Smash
