My best memory with this game was going to a friend's house while he had a large section of his family from China visiting. Most of them didn't speak any English we could understand but at one point one of our friends in our group took out his DS and started up Mario Kart and suddenly at least 5 or 6 of the Chinese relatives also whipped out DS units and we suddenly had a full multiplayer race going. Mario Kart DS is the true universal language.

Fun fact: before the humps on DK Pass, there's a little hill with an item box that gives you a guaranteed triple mushroom, star or triple red shells, no matter what place you're in.

As someone who probably has close to 400 hours in this game, the blooper makes a very noticeable difference against the CPU.
As you can also see in the footage, the computer starts to swerve whenever they are hit by the blooper.
Because of their constant swerving, their overall speed actually goes down drastically, since they are no longer going in a straight line.
The moral of the story is that bloopers are actually more effective against the CPU than they are against real players thank you for coming to my TED talk

Fun Fact: My Ds top part was broken so I played with the bottom part for my whole experience to completion. Then i got a Dsi and was finally able to see it.

@@Fungo4 Kind of. The computer players will swerve a bit when covered in ink, but I'm not sure if its actually effective.
@@masahirosakurai64 Right, they won't go bonking into walls or anything. But they'll wiggle in a predictable swerve pattern that drastically slows them down. Not really the intended effect but it's way better than slightly inconveniencing a human opponent.

Easily the best original track selection in the entire series. It blows Double Dash out of the water for that alone.

Absolutely not. 7 and 8 have better tracks.
@@thirteen3678 I meant original tracks, so yeah. Honestly a lot of 8’s retro courses are better than its unique ones. Bone Dry Desert, Shy Guy Mountain, Sweet Sweet Canyon feels like a Mario Circuit that had candy theming at the last second. Where’s the crazy stuff like maybe cherry bombs or cake candles shooting fire? Water Park is another example of barely doing anything with the theming. There’s one short section where you can use a mushroom to shortcut between park rides and maybe bump a Ferris wheel cart before the finish line. Compare that to Tick Tock Clock where there’s clock hands, gears, pendulums, all things you actually have to avoid or interact with pretty regularly on the track. Then there’s the Electrodome, and to its credit, it’s great as a standard twisty, turny track, but aside to the changes to the presentation, where’s the excitement? Have parts of the track become electrified, a disco ball whose spotlights cause a boost if you drive over them.
Also Sky High Sundae. I think nothing else needs to be said on that one

When you mentioned the local multiplayer mode, a flood of forgotten memories had flooded through my brain. Me and and an old friend used to link our DS’s up and play this game all the time in his bedroom. My friend changed a lot since then, and we dont talk anymore, yet i wish i could go back that many years to spend just a little bit of time with him and play some Mario Kart DS.

It's probably been said already, but the reason why R.O.B. is in this game is because the year this game came out. 2005 was R.O.B.'s 15th anniversary!
On another note, this might be the only DS game where the intro is different depending on what DS model you're using. If you're using the original DS, the intro has Mario shouting "Wahoo!" while the DS Lite and beyond would have him say "Here we go!"

the balloon battle in the ds version is way better than any of the other balloon battles just because its more of an elimination thing. The no time limit and only two men left standing situations used to be super tense especially when playing with friends

I'm just going to point out the the first word and the last gives you the acronym "Mario Kart: DS"
This was my first Mario Kart game. It was my introduction to characters like Waluigi and R.O.B., and I remember spending months beating all the missions to get 100% and gain the ability to use any character with any kart. I also remember playing a ton of battle mode with my friends, especially Shine Runners, which is still my favourite battle mode in any Mario Kart game. I'm also still disappointed we have yet to see a return of mission mode, or at least some kind of singleplayer mode with boss battles and whatever.
Man, this game was so nostalgic! I played this game with my friends and family members back in the day, and it was fun.What a good game

The Blooper is actually kinda helpful against CPUs. If a CPU is hit by it, it will make them wiggle around, but most importantly, it actually makes them a bit slower.

When I was young the top screen of my DS broke, and we couldn’t get it fixed for a little while, so I learned to play Mario Kart with using only the bottom screen.

The download feature on the DS in general was the best thing ever and I wish it'd be a thing again. It was such a lifesaver as a poor kid who could just about afford a DS to share with my brother but we never got that many games for it. It's just such a thoughtful and kind feature to add to a system to make it more fair for everyone, I guess games these days are often free to play but I kinda miss features like this.
This had one of the best battle modes of any Mario Kart period. I used to play it for hours since there was no time limit and it was fun to play in single player. Teams were a fun option too. It's really disappointing Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's battle mode forces a time limit.

5:39 from my experience, I noticed that the blooper slows down the speed of the CPU's karts. I always manage to pass them when I use the blooper because they go much slower with the ink on them.
Yeah, in this game at least the computer players start to swerve back and forth when inked rather than driving straight which slows them down a bit

I've made so many great memories with this game, here is one: In 2019 I was on a class trip with my graduating class to Amsterdam (about 50 people). some guy booted his DS with Mariokart and over the next few minutes we all did the same. Over the several hours we played the connection crashed a couple of times and everytime it happened i think 15-20 people simultaneously tried to join the party (it was like war) in the end it was the most competitive thing I have ever experienced.

I have so many memories of this one and 64. DS was always a blast and the download play meant my friends and I could always play. Airship Fortress was always one my favorites, such a cool track.
Im actually kinda glad that this was the first time we saw a single player vs/battle mode as it made playing mk by yourself actually enjoyable
