The lead up to smash 4 is one of my most cherished memories. I basically played brawl every day with my brother or best friend since it came out in 2008. I remember when the trailers and announcements fir smash 4 started dropping, and the hype among my me and my friends was insane. Everyday I would wake up hoping a screenshot would be posted and I would always analyze the shit out of it. I stood in line for three hours to play a little snippit of the game, watched the trailers hundreds of times and I even got the 3ds demo early by entering a shit ton of youtube giveaways. That was the last time I was that excited for a game. I probably had more fun waiting for the game than actually playing it. For me smash 4 was really important as I played smash since I was seven years old, and it was the continuation of something I held very dear to my heart.
I remember I got the Smash 3DS demo through twitter. Actually my sister asked for it on her Twitter, and some random person gave her a code lol. I was hyped af when I got that demo, and Smash 4 was an amazing game for me.
Me too. My friends and I hyped it up so much, and when they said Meta Knight would return (my main), I was ECSTATIC. Also, when we heard mf PAC-MAN would also be in, me and my friends started playing Pac-Man Championship DX. Fun times.. When we got the game, *oh boy, here we go* Fun things we did: 1. We did the wombo combo 2. *ALL POKÉMON BATTLE* and, 3. Mario v. Sonic, the og battle royale, or Sega v. Nintendo
yeah but fighting sucks on 3ds, you have to play super slowly or else the joystick will break, and no gamecube controller, and no hd, aaand it's just better on wiiu, the 1 player modes suck
Smash run was a genius idea held back by being stuck on the 3ds. Really wish it was brought over to ultimate and improved rather then dropped. Same for custom moves, but to a lesser extent.
Jabberwockxeno tbh smash run was the best thing in smash 4 for me, it was the old way to rep characters, however in ultimate we have spirits which I’m ok with but man smash run was so fun
I don't think being on 3DS held it back. They could have made it work if they wanted to. Mainly it was missing any sort of customization options whatsoever, and it's not like the 3DS can't handle having extra options.
Yeeaah Sm4sh is gonna be so dead next month. The 3DS version might still be a tad bit alive, but the Wii U players are all gonna practically toss their Wii U out the window with Ultimate.
This game will always be nostalgic for me, even though Ultimate makes it feel like a beta. The first trailer dropped the summer before I started college, and it would go on to become THE game my college friends and I would play. I have a lot of fond memories of ordering pizza and playing this game with friends in our dorm rooms.
I used to play that game sometimes in elementary school. Up until your comment, I had completely forgotten it even existed. Thank you for refreshing my memory.
I think you will be happy to know in Smash Ultimate that not only are characters organized pretty much by order of appearance in Smash Bros but all the returning stages have pretty much been remade from the ground up. Also for classic mode in Ultimate they pretty much got rid of the randomness factor entirely. Each character now faces their own unique set of opponents
It feels like Nintendo was having a artsy-fartsy moment with Smash 4 and "matured" a bit with Ultimate. It feels more "focused". Smash 4, as Scott said, had a lot of "idk". Where as Ultimate seems to actually know what it wants to do with itself. I felt like Nintendo was winging it with S4. Though to be fair, at that point with the Wii U's situation, I'm pretty sure Nintendo stopped caring with that specific generation and decided to try-hard for the next one and just BS the Wii-U era. And yes, they're super try-harding with the Switch. Off topic but I just like that the Joy Cons actually have a real joystick and not the D-pad from the Wii Motes or the weird circle pad from 3DS. Nope, just a straight up joystick. That will make those "oh shit, we don't have enough controllers for Smash Ultimate, we gotta use the Joy Cons only" moments sound actually tolerable. Looking forward to Smash Ultimate!
@@Spearra While I will miss the trophies somewhat I can understand why they decided not to include them this time plus it will make Ultimate far less of a headache for completionists
2:03 Now this just makes me want to see the box cover of Smash 4 saying "From the People who brought Pac Man Party" , cause that would totally be a major selling point.
I always thought the idea of the name was that the for is also “four”. So it’s Smash 4/for 3ds and WiiU. In that way it makes a lot of sense and is even pretty cool.
@@chl_ca ok.. ?? that’s the point of a pun.. it’s “for” but it is also “four” at the same time. No way in hell nintendo didn’t intentionally named it like that
11:45 Actually in the Wii U version your starting roster is larger than on 3ds, i.e. Lucina is unlockable on 3ds and available from the start on Wii U.
Fighters like Ness & Ganondorf who needed to be unlocked on the 3DS are available from the start on the Wii U, whereas fighters like Falco and Lucina need to be unlocked on both versions of Smash 4.
Wrong: Ness, Bowser Jr, Ganondorf and Jigglypuff are unlockable in the 3DS versión but not on the Wii U versión. Lucina is unlockable on both versions.
The fact that the characters are hard to keep track of with 8 players is totally accurate. It gets worse when one of your friends says “Let’s all play as Bowser!” Talk about hard to keep track of! It’s fun as hell but you get dizzy after a while from trying to keep track of which freaking Bowser you are
0:58 i was watching the Falco and I'm like "wow his friend is just sitting there crouch-spamming on temple this really is smash"-- then I realized said Falco is *A CPU.*
I'll never forget the day I physically cried at Mega Man's reveal. All the cancellations, all the mistreatment from Capcom, all of it leading up to my favorite character appearing in my favorite video game franchise. Thank you, Sakurai. THANK YOU! 12:02 You're goddamn right.
64: barebones and lackluster, especially for today’s standards, but invented the series and is still fun Good game Melee: Janky and broken, but that led to a thriving competitive scene and was still fun to play Good game Brawl: bland and slower, but introduced a ton of new characters, and was fun to just mess around in. Good game 3ds/wiiU: is super fun, has a crazy roster but just not enough to be truly special. Fun in short bursts Good game. Ultimate: EVERYONE. IS. HERE. ... Good game
I read the smash blog regularly and there really isn't much there. Some new pictures and descriptions of some fighters. The music on the website is what I really like though.
Smash 4 menu sucked due to it being disorganized. Brawl has basically the same style of menu and it's beloved because they put all the options in the right place lmao

24:46. I'm just being honest. Don't judge. I'm officially saying that noise was the cutest thing that I've ever heard out of this amazing person. There I said it.
I feel like the 2DS was a better fit for Sm4sh than the 3DS was. Not only was the circle pad where the left would normally be on a Pro Controller, but it sat comfortably in my hand and didn't make my hand feel as sore when I was playing it on the 3DS. All in all playing on the 2DS was a better overall experience for me, but I don't know about many others.
My friend and I logged countless hours on his custom fighting stage “Trials of Krikor” or “Trials of Crackwhore” as I used to call it. It was really well designed and pretty large. Perfect for team battles.
Unpopular opinion: I prefer Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS over Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and prefer Brawl and Melee to both. After getting to play both, I found myself way more into Smash 3DS than I was with Smash Wii U. Smash Run is leagues better than Smash Tour and the fact Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS has more unlockables gives it more replay value. As fun as it is to have a ton of the roster early, I honestly find it more rewarding to have more unlockable characters because it encourages you to play the game more to unlock said characters (which is why I'm personally happy that Sakurai made the starting roster for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate really tiny). Sure, Smash Wii U had events, but the map made things convoluted and harder to know how far I progressed (not to mention some of the events were just better in the previous games). Smash Wii U also has Stage Builder, and while it is cool, the way we're supposed to draw the lines and stuff isn't as intuitive as I'd like (for example, options to make the lines more straight or better in symmetry would be nice). The picture editing thing can be done with the 3DS camera so it's not really as exclusive as you'd think, and the Trophy Diorama has really confusing controls. Both the Stage Builder and the Trophy Diorama were things I was hyped for only to end up being disappointed. Classic Mode is so much better on the 3DS version as well. The only good single player mode in Smash Wii U that doesn't bore me is Crazy Orders, and that's not enough to compare to the fun I've had with Smash Run. The only thing I felt Smash Wii U had over the Smash 3DS was The Great Cave Offensive (seriously, one of my favorite stages to play on) and the graphics. In the end, I feel like Smash Wii U is really boring while Smash 3DS is pretty okay. Both don't really compare to Brawl or at least Melee IMO (mostly because of the lack of good Single Player content), but they're good enough games on their own merits.
I agree that way ultimate is the most rewarding game because you start the game with the original 8 character from the first game then you have to unlock every other character which is super fun and that way I think smash 4 is the worst game.
@@notsunnydaysahead Actually, spirits probably didn't cost too much development time, because it's mostly just character upgrades and imported images. Honestly, trophies were only ever a "that's neat" to me. So I don't get what all the fuss is about.
Cheeseboss Finch Well I love trophies and if you see trophies in super smash Brothers melee you’ll see the love for trophies for an example browsing the items trophies before you play a game of smash with the items on is so fun or seeing all the big words you didn’t get as a kid So you had to ask your mom what they meant was pretty cool indeed
I'd say that neither Scott nor Relax Alax are the new Jontron because a) Jontron is still Jontron and b) Neither of these guys have the same sense of humor as Jontron, they just talk about videogames. Same way I wouldn't say Dunkey is the new Jontron. Not the same. Also, c) Jontron is just far funnier. Though I'll concede that's a subjective opinion.
@@CrystalBulger the JonTron subreddit changed itself to one for Scott. I think that's what he's talking about. And we all know JonTron is the bird, so no one can be JonTron unless they're a bird.
I actually really love 8 player smash. I remember getting drunk with bunch of friends in high school and having parties where we could all fight each other at the same time.
I think it is a similar situation with Mario Galaxy 2 Vs. the original. Everyone "liked" MG-2, but it was missing something that MG-1 had. What I'm thinking is, it is probably because both SSB4 and MG-2 played it too "safe" and felt "bland" in comparison to Nintendo's prior releases. Luckily it seems that "magic" is back in Smash Ultimate, and Mario Odyssey. No the ladder isn't MG-3, but for all intents and purposes it didn't need to be.
Spearra I beg to differ. My opinion is that the second galaxy is the best game ever and the first one is the second best. I also have the same nostalgia for the both of them. Mg2 was meant to be a direct sequel to the first one and uses a lot of ideas that were planned to be the first one but was just to big. Although it was played safe, you can consider it an expansion to the first one so it was meant to be very similar.
I do feel like this was where we started to see that the series was arguably held back by a lot of the legacy features from the previous titles, especially those originating in Melee. Like, we see a Smash Bros game and we say "Well, it HAS to have Classic/All-Star/Event Match/Stadium Mode/more Trophies/etc." And we got those, and generally wound up feeling that most were either retreading familiar ground or becoming more of a chore than they once were. Add in new modes and features that were generally tepidly received and depend now more than ever on farming in single player for longevity, and you have a game that does do a lot right in terms of its classic multiplayer, but feels simultaneously bloated and lacking in content in other respects. I know some people are lambasting Ultimate's choice to trim out a lot of this content, but in the long run I think it was the smart move to focus on a few modes and make them more cohesive in terms of features. Now Classic mode actually feels fresh for the first time in forever (and doesn't depend on just a few decent minigames to pad itself out), Spirits mode looks like the next logical evolution for Event mode we had been waiting for, Adventure mode looks pretty meaty without relying on somewhat hit or miss platforming/beat-em-up gameplay forced on the Smash engine, and while trophies will be missed I do like that they combined the new fanservice collectable with customization, and made that a core mechanic in the new modes rather than just kind of dumping it on the game and letting players make their own fun with it.
To be honest, I'm not really interested in Spirits themselves. I mean, sure, there are a TON of them, but I would much rather spend my time collecting some beautiful and hand-made (for the most part) 3D models with descriptions of each one than JPEGS I can find online. I don't know, it just feels like less. I understand why it happened, but I would much rather wait longer for the game to get at least trophies, even if they are mostly from the 3DS and Wii U, than what we have now.
@JB But, the Spirits battles are just Event matches. If you want to reference a character through Events, why not do that instead? Or, if you want to reference a character and give them a reward, why not make specific trophies be the rewards for those Events? In any way I slice it, I just don't see Spirits as a good substitute for Trophies. They make Spirits seem like they are alive in this same universe in Smash, but it just doesn't feel like they belong with each other.
@@Mr.Cynical To be fair, Spirits are actually have a lot more of a use than Trophies ever did. Melee was a great way to introduce these, but when Brawl and Smash 4 came around...the Trophies kinda lost their wow factor. Even if Spirit matches are basically just glorified Event matches, they at least look more creative, rewarding and interesting than the Event matches Brawl and Smash 4 had combined.
"The C-stick on the 3DS is hard to use" If that's hard to use, what do you call the analog nub on the N3DS? ...unusable, you call it unusable. I've tried to use that thing. A lot. It only works if your skin is in just the right condition, you're not sweating too much, and it decides to cooperate that day.
That's why I pried mine out of my small, not-XL New 3DS and wedged a PSP thumb stick in instead. It actually works leagues better, but I still don't like how it operates mechanically.
Smash on 3ds/Wiiu is how I spent a lot of my middle school life and it will always be special to me even if ultimate is 10x better and has the inklings ( my all time favorite Nintendo characters, you can probably tell by my profile picture)

Fun times..
When we got the game, *oh boy, here we go*
Fun things we did:
1. We did the wombo combo
2. *ALL POKÉMON BATTLE*
and, 3. Mario v. Sonic, the og battle royale, or Sega v. Nintendo
"My me"
Ultimate hype was simply beautiful to me. I couldn't sleep the night the game came out because the next day I was gonna play it nonstop with friends

Ultimate kind of has Custom Moves with the inclusion of Spirits.
I don't think being on 3DS held it back. They could have made it work if they wanted to. Mainly it was missing any sort of customization options whatsoever, and it's not like the 3DS can't handle having extra options.

Have they confirmed that there’s no custom moves? Aww I was looking forward to seeing what Pokemon Trainer’s customs are like. :(

10:22 Like Nathaniel Bandy said, naming Smash for 3DS "Super Smash Bros. DUEL" would've worked well, because of the 3DS' dual screens.
I remember when Nathaniel Bandy predicted Ultimate's name

Fighters like Ness & Ganondorf who needed to be unlocked on the 3DS are available from the start on the Wii U, whereas fighters like Falco and Lucina need to be unlocked on both versions of Smash 4.

Unpopular opinion:
I prefer Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS over Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and prefer Brawl and Melee to both.
Jeez Me 2
Ok
I agree that way ultimate is the most rewarding game because you start the game with the original 8 character from the first game then you have to unlock every other character which is super fun and that way I think smash 4 is the worst game.

Smash Ultimate: Is this some kind of peasant joke I'm too rich to understand?
You’re right about Smash 4 lacking magic. There’s just something that’s it missing from Melee and Brawl. It could just be nostalgia though
Spearra never heard anyone prefer mg1 over mg2
If your opinion of a game is pushed by nostalgia and that alone, your perspective is flawed.
@JB
But, the Spirits battles are just Event matches.
