I used to visit a small game store, that specialized on retro stuff, near my apartment almost daily. It was always a great experience to see what was available and talk about gaming in general with the only employee who worked there. Unfortunately with the pandemic I moved back to my parent's, so I haven't visited the store in months. Those small game stores are such a great place to go
I remember a small one in Dublin called R.A.G.E where they had a boxed NES in amazing condition almost looking like it was never touched. And they have so much for retro gamers. NES, Master System, Genesis, Gameboy, SNES, Saturn, PS1, N64, GBC, Dreamcast, PS2, GBA, GameCube
I know right! So many games and not just that their passion games is awesome.

I've met some wonderful employees at gamestop. One time I went to a gamestop recently casually looking for pokemon plushes. One of the employees noticed that I was buying a totodile plush that was heavily discounted, and he was like "hey, do you want another one? We really want to get rid of it, so it'll literally cost you only 2 cents," and it was a chikorita, and I was trying to complete my Johto starters so I was like hell yeah dude, and he brought it out from the back of the store for me.
There was another gamestop employee that literally got me into Persona and SMT. I went to a gamestop a while back to stock up on some nostalgic RPGs for me (FFIII on the DS, Rogue Galaxy, Radiata Stories, etc.). I asked the employee if they had any of the games I listed and he said no. As I was about to walk away though, the guy said "c'mere. I got some games I know you'll like," and he brought me over to the ps2 games where he had SMT Nocturne and Persona 4, two of my now all-time favorite games ever. I never saw that employee again after that...which was a shame cause that man was a goddamn salesman. I bet he got fired cause he didn't shove preorders down your throat, but who the fuck cares about that when he knows how to sell franchises to people that they may not know about. Went to this really cool 2-storey game store once. They had regular modern game stuff on the ground floor, like Minecraft plushies, Switch consoles, and 3 different versions of Exploding Kittens. But the fun part was the basement. They sell N64 games. They sell C64s and Ataris. They have Tetris and Pac-Man arcade machines (not for sale afaik). Their (3)DS game collection was bigger than my local game shop's was at its peak.

I started working at Gamestop back in August of last year and just got back to rewatching this episode, but holy shit he hits the nail on the head. My store try to minimize the bullshit by encouraging donations of games that weren’t pulling that much in credit, we’d NEVER sticker box art, instead we’d tear the sticker off with the back still on, and close it in the plastic covering. That way, whenever you bought it, you just opened the game up, lifted the plastic, boom, no stickers. We also FIERCELY stuck to our guns with the 48 hour reserve window on new games. How to get hired at a video game store:
1) Like the Wii
Always had great experiences at my local GameStops regardless of where I lived. The employees there are actually interested in video games, are nice to talk to, and gave me honest opinions. It also allowed me to buy used games very cheap, often using the buy-2-get-1 offer, and get into the Xbox 360 late in the console’s lifecycle with great games at low prices.
I also loved Game Informer. It’s because of that magazine that I read about Darksiders II, then bought Darksiders for $17 (preowned) in preparation for Darksiders II, and fell in love with the series.
At this point in my life, however, I love the convenience of digital games so my relationship with GameStop is all but dead. Oh, and I also hated those ******* stickers on NEW games!
I’m sobbing as someone who just quit my job at GameStop. Your video is 100% authentic. I could not stop laughing. Anyone in upper management is psycho on selling numbers. I got a write up for “my team” that I was in charge of not having good enough numbers.

The worst part of glass cases on game shelves is having to get an employee for sure. Especially the walk over to the case where neither of you say anything until you arrive and say "yeah, that one"
I understand it if the games are rare or expensive, but keeping all the games behind glass cases is just unnecessary and discouraging to me as a consumer
Trust me, as someone who worked at a certain toy story that died recently, it's just as awkward for the employee. And my store (possibly others do this too) make it so turning the key and opening the case is actually quite difficult, you have to apply pressure on the glass case as you turn a key a specific way, and you actually have three keys that look pretty similar and only one works for game cases so I'm usually struggling for a minute and two as I feel like I might be silently judged by this customer likely thinking, "geez, you have trouble with the simple task of using a key?"
So relatable 😂
8:00 This has happened to me more than once! Here in Germany, when I buy NEW games from a store (not specifically Gamestop, any store), it often happens that more expensive games are sold as "empty boxes", which means: the case packaging has been opened, the actual game has been taken out and left at some kind of information desk to avoid stealing the game. You can only pick up the actual game at the information desk by showing your purchase receipt once you have bought the game case in the store!...And you still have to pay the full price.
10:07 you clearly haven’t seen me in a gamestop

Glad to know I wasn’t the only one who would obsess over the game u just got on the way home from the store. The 40 minute trip home let me study every inch of the cover because it was all I could do during the wait time between buying the game and slapping it in whatever console and playing
And your parents saying wait till you get home haha good times
I can relate. That’s exponentially much more satisfying than waiting for a digital game to fully download.
Same

Well I got this skylander game for the Wii. How much is it now?

@@MrMaxzillion What about this Madden game for the Xbox how much is it now?

Can you believe this episode single-handedly created an entire plot line
Reading the information on the back of the game and reading the manual booklet was part of the excitement of going home with a new game ^^
Walks into GameStop, fog everywhere, one overhead light in the center slowly flickers on and off. Continue walking its quiet too quiet, hear rustling behind me.
I feel like someone is... trying to sell me something.
would be a great video game, also do you want a membership with that?
Nice try, there's no build-up in Gamestop. You step a toe into the store and someone is right there, ready to ki-... sell you something.
well do you want to preorder www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/coming-soon/all/date ?

The opening seven seconds have a whole different meaning now.
Ah yes. The times we live in now.
What? I can buy games in a building?

My best memory at Gamestop was either getting Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga or getting Pokemon distributions
Yeah, about game stop. I never go there but instead my local game store for all the reasons you mentioned about hole in the wall game stores. Good stuff
Saying "retro games" to refer to Gamecube games and I'm about to turn 30 *cries into hands*
Wait GameCube games are retro now what the fuck

retro games
Yeah, and the Wii and PS3 are retro too because they were released about 12 years ago
Has it honestly been that long?
Looks like r/jontron is gonna be Scott infested for another week!
good im glad he was suggested. ive been binging scott ever since
How exactly does Scott's content remind you guys of jontron I don't see quite how besides consistent release schedule?
I'm out of the loop, why is r/jontron a Scott sub now? And since when?
mairland200 there was a revolution a while back and everyone just went with it. Mainly just people getting annoyed over Jon’s lack of uploads
Looks like it’s Grimbo time
Bro the time you it in your videos and how funny you are it gold 😂😂
I remember playing jak and daxter at my babysitters when I was young not knowing the name and after finally finding it I ordered it online, I honestly don’t remember any game stores near where I lived and when it came in the mail it had the game stop cover and I was like “WoW”
Scott: I’m not really a Xenoblade Guy
Also Scott: **Repeatedly plays Xenoblade OST tracks and remixes**
I can respect that
I don't like Xenoblade's gameplay, but I love the music.
You can dislike a game and like its music, and vice versa. For example, I despise playing Need For Speed: The Run sometimes, but the soundtrack for it bops.
The Pika Player I know, it’s just nice that, even though he’s not a fan of JRPGs and therefore Xenoblade by proxy, he at least gives the series the respect of enjoying its amazing soundtrack, especially when finding people who give a damn about the series is extremely difficult outside of the subreddit
@Awesomizer 2000 wait where does he use Xenoblade Music

"Is your manager manipulative?"
"I'd say no to that if I were you" lmao
The magical feeling of entering a gamestore and seeing all the colorful and interesting games there are.
Of not even always intending to get something, just browsing the games there.
That was me as a kid.
Thanks for reminding me of this, Scott.
It really was a special thing, and even now living in an country where there aren't a lot of (if any) western-style game store alternatives, I still find myself reminiscing over those days.
It might be nostalgia or just me thinking about experiences I had when I was younger, but there really isn't anything like them.
Scott: "Ugh I'm so tired of GameStop"
2020 Reddit: "Hehehehehe"
I’m from Australia and when I was on a holiday to America, I had some money to spend on a switch game. We went to the counter and the lady said “are you a powerup rewards member?” And my Dad said “No, we’re from Australia.” There was a five second pause before she said “for when you come back?”
Nice.
Wait, are Switch games not region-locked?
@@k-leb4671 Nope! They're not region locked.
@@loopdeloop15 Cool. I never liked region-locking.

ebay always got my back when it comes to used stuff, be it games, devices, or even console parts. the ability to see real pictures taken by the seller of what you're buying, as well as the ebay moneyback guarantee, is a really good safety net
This is one of Scott's all time best episodes.
