- Is the Mash Roadstar 400 any good? I take a just run-in 2017 Mash Roadstar 400 for a spin around the city of Nottingham to see how it holds up.
Chinese motorcycles have come a long way in the past decade. Sure they still have a way to go in order to match the Japanese for quality control but there are some gems to be had. Once you start mixing the higher quality Chinese offerings with European 'finishing' companies you get some pretty decent machines indeed.

Good honest basic review. It's biking at its purist form.
I had bikes from the 70's and 80's. CX500, CB400 and around 60 other bikes till present day.
I find something quite pleasing looking at these bikes.

In the early 70's Kawasaki's small bikes used to rattle apart, but they improved. China's learning curve will be a lot steeper and will really put the hurt on the companies that build bikes that are way too complex and way too expensive.
These are assembled in Italy and are a quality bike. The standards have been raised to a new level as the Europeans will not put up with low quality bikes.
i did my driving license on this bike. Its amazing. I will first get another one thats cheaper and then move on to this bike. Its an outstanding bike!!

I'm getting this later this year, in Greece it's called Daytona Rockstar 400i, it will be my main city commuter and my first motorcycle. Everyone insists on getting a scooter instead, I hope I won't regret it. At 185cm I'm worried it might be a little small for my size, but after thorough research I'm convinced it's the option with the least compromise for what I'm looking for and best value for money.

I'm from Greece and I'm thinking of getting this bike, too. Did you have a test ride? Do you have any personal (or someone else's) opinion about the bike? I believe there are very few people owning it in Greece, because I could find any comments on the web, despite test rides from some websites...

All I can say is get it man I own a 250 cc version of the bile and use it as a daily commuter theyre incredible I have driven it in dry , dusty , muddy and wet weather never had a problem not once so congrats on the new bike.

In the Philippines this bike is called the Motorstar Cafe 400,
Brand new it cost just under £2000, which for a 400cc motor bike is a great deal,
Phil Jones. That saves half the price. But it has been modified for the European market. The Philippine version has drum brakes at the front. And maybe some other things have changed. But the price difference is very large. Happy to live in the Philippines :-)

anyone wanting a classic style British looking bike on a budget that won't get them into trouble as they become born-again bikers this is a great choice of bike, second hand with just a few thousand miles on they go for £2-£2.500, cheap in anyone's book, the engine is bombproof, if I'm not mistaken it is a Chinese cloned DR, China now make engines for Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki so don't think its junk inside, air-cooled single thumper with no LC radiator, this bike is great for DIY maintenance, air & oil filter plus oil change every 5000 miles and not much more, your local bike shop will check and adjust the tappets every 5000 miles and charge you about £50 if your not up to DIY tappet adjustment, second hand they're a good buy as old bloke's tend to buy them new, ride them once a month and lavish money on them,

Seems like a fair review. Since moving to Italy and after having previously lived in Japan, I have an understanding of why someone would want a simpler, smaller displacement machine for commuting. A narrow bike slips through traffic and you don't need tons of thrust if traffic is only moving 40 kph anyways. I have been seeing the new Royal Enfields that are coming out of India and I have to say, those look really nice. I have never ridden one, but kind of have the groove of this bike.

It's OK but build quality was an issue.
I own a Honda GB400TT which uses the same engine as the Mash and its fantastic in town and for short rides. Cruising at 60mph is more fun than on my R1200RS !. Just bought a Mash TT400 for my son for commuting. Here in South Africa they are called Crosby's. Great classic looking bikes with that solid engine based on the Honda GB400/XR400 of the mid-late 1980's.
Yes the only way to tell the difference in the engines is the casings and the o2 sensor on the exhaust 🖒
In nepal, it's called British ace xy400 and they say it's made in Britian .. old vintage bike with history or something like that!

Looks really nice as a town bike, but a bit on the small side for what I'm looking for. Hopefully, they'll expand the range into 500 - 650cc, eventually.
I don't know if you checked in the meantime. If you did'nt: they have two 650 cc bikes now.
Reminds me of the once very popular Yamaha SR500 single ... I think the SR400 is still available brand new in some markets today!
+chafik0566 you can get the SR400 but it's a bit on the expensive side.
fact: the frame is a clone of the sr400. While the engine is a clone of a gb400
it is a version of the Japan only Honda SS400 that Shineray built for Honda then bought the tooling and rights to buiild themselves, frame, engine and all is Honda designed

I had it orange and black one in the 1970s but they called it a Honda then.

Hi buddy. In this video I'm wearing my Indian Motorcycle open face helmet with a Soubirac Rainbow Bubble Visor attached. The jacket is a genuine 70s leather bike jacket I bought off ebay about 15 years ago for £8!
For this spring I've got a brand new open face Hedon helmet which I'll be using once the weather warm up. Really low profile and ultra lightweight, I'm really looking forwars to testing it.
Why's the camera on you most of the time? It's the bike we're intetested in!
What about the gear shift ? Neutral it's easy? And the famous engine stops ?
+Fernando Carrilho I never had any issues. Get change was smooth and easy, I experienced no false neutrals. Engine never missed a beat.

Mash 400 is based on the Honda CB400SS. Nothing else.

I'm looking at buying the mash roadstar 50 taking my cbt next month but unsure as never ridden and motorbike before
+ACHIMP 1211 getting a geared bike like the Roadstar 50 is a much better option than getting a twist and go Scooter because you'll learn clutch control and how to change gears. This will be handy when learning to drive too.
Dazzle Яebel Rides this is what I was thinking I was looking at buying a peugeot speedfight 4 but when I have bought the bike and got insurance and that I'll be looking about about 3 grand where this one will be about 1 grand cheaper.. do hbc do the mash roadstar 50?

Does it feel like the engine has a counter balancer? Smooth?
Smooth enough for a single but then it doesn't have much power. More like a torquey 250.
Are you aware of any mechanical failure for this bike?? I want to know how reliable these bikes are after 2-3 years on the streets...
I don't know the answer to that I'm afraid.

Apparently a lot of electrical problems, loud brakes and others. But nothing terrible.
I'm not aware of electrical or brake issues. That's not to say theu don't exist but I'm aware of at least 8 bikes that have been sold and used with no issues over the past 2 years.
In Philippines, doesn't come as FI.
After a few years...how do these bikes hold??
As with all bikes I dare say it comes down to how they are looked after.

Nice bike, hate the price, I live part time in the Philippines, bought one of these there under the brand name of motostar, tits called the café 400 exact same bike as you reviewed here, only difference is the price, UK price. £3490, I paid £1800 !!! hell of a difference right ?

Gotcha. That makes sense. I've been trolled before by people complaining about my riding and when I've gone back to look myself there was nothing there. That's why I'm a bit more cautious now, I don't want to waste my time looking back through an old video to not find anything. I can see what you mean about this one though so sorry for jumping the gun.

What is top speed and acceleration like. I want something like this with a bit of grunt but not a racer Something to outpace most cars up to 80mph.Maybe the MASH 650 WOULD BE BETTER.

Why dont the riders test the fuel economy though (or even mention it for that matter...
The trouble with that is the limited time you have with the bike. I got 1 hour which isn't enough time to test fuel economy. You really need a bike for at least a week and run through at least 2 tanks of fuel before you can test it. This is therefore a first impressions review rather than a long-term review which should highlight those things.
Seems like a decent motorcycle but it’s a pity they don’t call it what it is: a 400. That’s just silly calling it a 500. Wonder if they’ll ever offer something that’s not completely underwhelming?

i just don't like the graphics - couldn't they have invested in a decent badge and lettering on the side panels, doesn't sell the bike to me as it is with naff looking logo and fonts, that kind of stops me from looking further, maybe i am a minority but there will be others who think the same.

In the Philippines, where I'm from, this is sold as Motorstar Cafe 400 sold by Motorstar.
This is actually a Chinese motorcycle. In China, it's called Shineray XY400. The design process and manufacturing is done by Shineray.
@@bobofthestorm I know that. I have seen them. Still, the MASH, which is what is being reviewed in this vlog is a french concept and design. No chinese company is selling it in European soil.

They’ve made the bike available for companies like Mash and now Genuine to come in, specify the bike’s details, and then take delivery of finished motorcycles bearing their name.
the engine is originaly a XBR 500 HONDA there are also the roots for the 500 in the Mash would be interesting to see if a original XBR Cylinder fits

OK let's address the elephant in the room, why if you have almost £4000 or even £3500 in your pockets would you put it down on this, when you can have a huge choice of really good quality second hand Japanese bikes, and in fact maybe some new ones too, I'm sorry but personally I don't think I'd do it.
There's no elephant in the room. Everyone knows there are plenty of bikes available new and used around this price, this is just one of them and it is a perfectly serviceable machine. If this is the kind of thing someone wants then this is just my review. One mans meat is another mans poison.
Dazzle Яebel Rides and I understand that, but and I think most if not all riders will conceded that at that price point its a lot of hard earned cash to lay down on a very new company and what is Chinese bike, now I don't have a problem with these on the whole, in fact they have been getting better over the last few years, but they are still not at the level of the Japanese ones, now in the budget bike area like lexmoto and sinnis sure these represent great value for the money, but these are around £2000 + or - but this bike is the better part of £3500! So while I agree with your point of each one to there own, I just feel that a much more reliable, quality and better machine could be had for that cost, and if you got together say six or ten bikes in this price range and added this one, then asked a group of bikers to walk down the line and pick one, how many do you honestly think would take the mash?
I've not seen a new Japanese 400 for less than £4000 these days. To be honest I personally prefer a bit more oomph anyway but reliability isn't an issue and the engine was smooth as silk.
Dazzle Яebel Rides that's as maybe, but I was thinking more about a second hand Japanese bikes, maybe a year old one or something like that, and what about the resale value of this bike, not only will you lose a wedge of cash as soon as ya tyres hit the tarmac, but what will you get for your bike in 12 months or more, with a list of £3999! (I've just checked) I'm thinking that you'd be lucky to get £2500ish, so I still feel its a very valid point over all in regards to this or a good quality jap bike.

Way over priced! Just pop in to the same dealer and pay £600 more for a V-Strom 250. That £600 will be well spent when it comes to trade-in/sell-on time.
+clanmac66 you could. If you want a V-Strom 250. If we all bought motorcycles with future trade-in at the back of our minds then we'd never buy brand new bikes anyway.
I couldn't disagree more, I bought a brand new Tiger Sport 3 months ago, knowing in 5 years when I trade-in, it will still be worth something. You can buy a very similar Bullit Hunt S 250 20hp for under £2400 otr Or a better quality = to Mash, Herald 250 for about £2900 otr (UK company same Chinese bikes).
