The seat is worth the price of admission. I am so damn sick of seats that lock you into one riding position. Death on long trips.
This bike is a blast! Faster than my wife's Yamaha SR400, and it has a quick electric starter! Looks like a little vintage Bonneville, and will be a fun bike to add custom touches to. Go ride one... you'll like it!
Sounds like you're pumping up your chinese social credit score. 😄
I’ve owned one for a while it has a nice stock rumble sound/feel
"they don't build them like they used to, thank god"...............amen to that
Yeah, really. I still have my old Harley sportster from 25 years ago. Actually it's more maintenance and tinkering than those old Honda CB's were, and it's a lot newer too.
These look fantastic for the novice rider, especially for us later starters in motorcycle riding... Good review mate.
I own this bike and I absolutely love it it is so comfortable got plenty of torque just a wonderful bike to ride around town
Great to hear!
This is reminding me of my 1976 Honda 360, one of my bikes from the past that I often look back on fondly. Except that I paid $639 for it brand new as a leftover in 77. How times have changed in that respect. That flat seat, round headlight and dual round gages look so good to me!
Great review. Just got my 2022 model (after riding street bikes since 1978) and love it!
That's a great looking motorcycle. I started riding in '73 & still like the classic looks of bikes made in that era. I have a Genuine scooter (Buddy 170i) & quality is excellent.
This bike is built by Shineway in China and sold all over the world under various names and styles. Nothing wrong with that, Shineway now owns SWM and if you look at the SWM Classic models it has the same motor. The Nemesis brand in Australia is the same bike. Would be a great bike to commute on.
Yep 100% correct, I have the 400 Mash scrambler, brought new in 2016, Good bike, easy to live with, Ideal for women, or folks like me that can't hack the weight of a BMW K series anymore.
This looks like the perfect starter bike. I started much later and love the vintage look, and it’s only 3,999 at my local dealers. Thanks for this review!
Did you end up getting the bike? My local dealer has 2022s for $3999 ($5300 out the door) but I cannot find any reviews made more recently. Also, how difficult is it for you to find parts/service documentation?
I have a 2012 Genuine Buddy 50 that I bought new. It waits in my shed patiently for it's next ride. I have swapped the battery for a lithium & changed the spark plug a couple of times. It still looks and runs great!
They're great little scooters!
In Europe these bikes are sold as MASH motorcycles. Over the years the bikes quality has improoved drasticaly. Bikes from a few years ago had often bad welding and electrical problems. My 400cc MASH from 2022 has 18000 kilometers without a problem and i am verry happy with my bike.
The Adventure size tires on this sweet bike opens up lots of options for tires.
I started working in a Honda shop when there was still 305's new on the showroom floor. Now that I am old I have been looking or a bike and the big 4 just is not making anything I like but just found this bike today and must say I think I like it. Could be just the ticket to ride to the Barbers Vintage fest this year.
I have an SR400 (along with a couple of V-Twin cruisers and an R3). I'm an old guy (67) and I have no problem with a kick start. I did have to install a Power Plug on the SR400 to remedy the lean air/fuel mixture problem. I'd buy this Genuine G400C bike but I have my eye on a Harley Street Bob. Good vid.
This bike seems like a copy of my Honda CB400SS, which shares the same engine as the XR400, but unfortunately was never imported to the US 😭
Anyway, yes, this bike seems to be a copy of both the CB400SS and the Yamaha SR400 (resembles more the SR in looks, but has electric start like the Honda), which is a GOOD thing because those are very fun bikes to ride! VERY beginner friendly and lightweight thumper to commute around town.
Very interesting bike, just discovered this today. I would actually be interested in one of those, and I hate Chinese junk, but that one looks to be fairly well-made, especially with the XR400 engine. I have an XR400 so I know how reliable the engine is, they run forever and never break.
Agreed, they're good looking bikes. Great, low cost option for someone.
You do know this engine is a Chinese clone right.
@@thra5herxb12s Actually, the company that makes this bike made most of the parts for CB's for Honda. They supplied CB parts to Honda until they stopped making CB's. So, the parts are made from the exact same molds as the Honda parts. All they did was take-off Honda's name.
Have 4500km without problems. It's a budgetbike. Don't buy one if he has to stand outside. They are prone to corrode.
But iv'e seen a brandnew KTM being pushed home because of a leaking clutch assembly with less than 100km under the wheels.
This bike is rebranded here in the Philippines as the Cafe 400 under MotorStar. We have a carburetor variant being sold at Php 145,000 (USD 2,552). We have alot of users here with some running at 30,000KM with no problems. I just got one few weeks ago and made a video in my channel removing the brand sticker lol. Overall, great video!
RFVC stands for radial four valve combustion; the valves are positioned radially around the combustion chamber, rather than in two pairs.
Senor Robot. Thanks for this close up look. Your negative comments prove equally true for any lower end Japanese bike. I have seen brand new Kawas with really poor wiring hanging loose, not waterproofed etc. The chrome on any of these bikes will deteriorate fast. Keep your bike indoors, and covered.. or expect pitting and rust. Taiwan made bikes are not goofy chinese things. The SR-400 is a dinosaur. Listen to one run.. they suck. Now we need a riding video in the twisties with sound
I'd love to know how reliable they are longer-term... I think after a few years being released in the UK and in Australia, there is no major issues from the online stuff I've seen. Should be okay if you keep it undercover and service regularly.
Great review, I’m going to buy one from our dealer here in greater Atlanta area.
Right on!
I also love the off-center gas cap -very British
Nice bike. Good review very detailed and honest. Bike looks solid and reliable.
Virtually the same bike is available here in the Philippines as the Motorstar Cafe 400 for under $2,500. The biggest difference aside from minor cosmetics (as in shaving pennies on every component) is that it uses a carb instead of fuel injection. The upside of EFI is that "it just works..." The down side is "...until it doesn't". A carb will generally give you some warning while EFI will shut you down like flipping a switch. It's relatively easy to find a mechanic here who can sort out thumper carb problems with tools and parts on the shelf. For most of the people here who own a motorcycle it's their primary transportation, having it parked for three to five days while parts are on order isn't acceptable.
Great review! Thanks.
We don't have any dealerships to work on it here in Houston. We don't even have a Vespa dealership. Closest dealership is San Antonio 179 mi away.
Cool motorcycle , as far as the barely metal on engine maybe go for polishing . I had a 73 Honda cb550 four and I polished the engine and it looked awesome.
Yes, indeed! Badass bike! 😁👍
Had that same Honda back in the late 70’s. Had a blast!
Is this a good choice for a beginner's first motorcycle?
I love this bike plan on getging one next year, cause honda forgot about us.
Love Genuine products, we have a dealer in our small Northern Michigan town. However, never once heard "made in China" in your video.
Can you get a center stand for this bike? Those fenders look kinda thin... are they?
I like the look, except for that generic looking 400 sticker on the side covers. Is it clearcoated over, or could it be removed?
I find it easier to take the side panels off once the seat is off. Is that recommended. Those panel are very thin medal and can dent easily- gotta be careful. It could’ve been a lightweight plastic for convenience and ease of removal
Good video. Thanks for all that info. One point, it's pronounced Del-fi , like Wi-Fi.
OMG THANK YOU!
Well done!
great video robot thanks
This bike is also known as Motorstar Cafe 400 here in the Philippines and it only cost 2,489.33 USD (not fuel injected though). So far mine is looking good.
Fantastic review Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Hey, did you visit Scooterworks Chicago last year?
What’s the best way to prop up the rear tire for servicing the chain? Can you use a jack underneath the exhaust pipes or would that damage the pipes? Thx
motor bike jack or rig it from overhead
Hello I am a person who rides Vespa in Korea. I'm wondering if you want to replace the GTV250 watch battery. Try the latest post. Thank you
They area a nice bike, we have them here in the Philippines. For about $3200.
Yeah, a brand new of this bike cost only 2773 USD, here in the Philippines
It’s interesting that bike is rebadged all over the world- in the Philippines it’s called the motorstar café 400
Any updates for this bike in 2023 like color?
Has this bike held up over the years?
I own the Mash 400 scrambler version, brought in 2016 UK, ask if you want questions answered.
Do you think the genuine is reliable? I'm trying to buy my first bike
Hi. How are the vibrations? Are they bad or barely noticeable?
@@donmaribras If it's like the Honda XR400 engine, which this is a Chinese copy of, then it should be very smooth because the Honda XR400 has a counter-balancer in the engine. My XR400 is a dirt bike of course, but the engine runs very smoothly and only vibrates at high rpm, but even then it's not bad at all.
The European version called mash 500 has ABS front & back. I think now in 2020 the USA also has standard ABS version. But the controls still are cheap & crap.
Great review sounds like such a fun little bike. Does anybody know if this is the same bike as the Mash 400?
But how does it sound?! Didn't hear an exhaust note in this video anywhere.
Simple exhaust mod on these grab a hole saw and yeet that decibel killer. Keeps the original look, sounds much better, also pull the snorkel off the intake box.
barfma... sheesh.
@@captlarry-3525 is it English?
6 speed?...very nice looking...especially for the price. Lack of Dealerships uptake would be a problem...at least in the San Fran Bay Area. Would a Honda dealership be able to handle this bike...Im guessing Honda engine parts are not interchangeable? Cheaper than a Vespa 300...
It's a 5 speed. There may be a few things that would be interchangeable, but not exactly sure. We'll have to consult Robot on that one. Thanks!
There are several GENUINE dealers in the San Francisco area. Should be ZERO problem getting service and parts.
Excellent review Robot ! Congratulations ! I wasn't aware that your shop dealt in Genuine / PGO bikes. I'm in Brazil and I'm looking at some second-hand Blur 220i scoots, these were imported here just from 2011 until 2013, they were sold as "O-Max 250cc." here and sales didn't really take off, consequently there are not very many available, and a serious lack of parts. by chance do you have any info.regarding negative or weak points on that model ? Are Blur spares available in the States ? Any advice would be most welcome ! Cheers, Chris.
I had a 2008 PGO G-Max 125, they are great scoots and well put together, also a nice looking scoot. The Genuine Blur is the exact same scoot. The 220i should be that little bit faster, they launched the G-Max 250cc version a year after I bought mine, but they were too expensive in my opinion. Many parts can be bought on Ebay.
@@irishrover63 Thanks Rover !
Just like the Enfield Himalayan, I wish they made the frames larger as they are far too small for anyone 6 feet tall or over. It is a great shame as the 400cc engine is enough for anything I want it to do.
Really? I have a himilayan and it’s at least as big as my other bikes. Had a friend ride it last week who’s 6’3 and had no issues
Went to the dealer the other day and looked at one of these. Wasn't impressed. It's a bony bike, no beef. Plus they wanted $4k for it. Add on TT&L plus shipping plus assembly and suddenly it's way over $5k. I left the dealership without one. Way better deals out there for better name-brand bikes.
I'd be happier if it were Japanese quality. For 5k I'd buy used bigger engine japanese bikes.
What state are Vespas imported to?
Very cool
Hi Robot, is this G400C available for Canada ?
Good review. Nice video.
The bike looks great. I'm a fan, but holy cow! $4,600 is way too much money for this Chinese bike. The SR400 is only $1,000 to $1,400 more.
Janus uses a variation of this engine but a carb and a whole lot more money.
I like it 👌
Nice line splitting California.
Built in China, sold in Europe as the "Mash Five-Hundred 400"
Ok, ok... but where’s Steve?!
Lovely bike, only miss tubeless? Wire wheels too old school.
I like plastic does not rust. Restoration of rusty pieces or cracked steel, not so great.
66 Bennelli, 66 Bonneville, 71 CL350..
Hi. Interesting review. Being a dry sump design, can you tell me how the gearbox is lubricated please.
Any dealers in Georgia?
В России такой мотоцикл продается под брендом "Combat 400". Цена на него-3000 долларов.
I just want that silver Vespa? in the background! :)
Beware lads w have a MOD in the house
Chinese bike... Mash 400 in Europe. In the Philippines is half the price! (motorstar cafe 400)
Not half but about $3200. Good deal.
Should I get this or Honda cb125
This 100%
Do u have this in ph
should i get this or the honda rebel 300 as my first motorcycle?
both are excellent choices. Choose the one that makes you smile bigger when you look at it.
How does this compare to the BMW 310R as a beginner bike?
To quote someone else, I forget who, these are not beginner bikes but they could be classed as bikes for beginners as well as long term experienced bikers. I have sold my two Harleys, an Electra Glide and a 1200 Sportster to move to lighter bikes that are more economical to maintain and operate, better fuel economy, and more fun to ride because of their handling and they can do more than what my bigger bikes could do. So now for me it is my Burgman 400, Honda NC700X and looking for a smaller displacement bike such as the Genuine 400 or maybe trying a little Italian like the Vespa 300's. Just as Americans have given up big cars they are gradually doing the same with the motorcycles, smaller is better and more fun.
Either one is a great beginner bike (fun for seasoned riders too). I'd take the G400C: two cylinders instead of one means a smoother ride and less torque from a standstill which makes taking off easier. The fit and finish on Genuine scooters is better than BMW. The 310R suspension is better, but if you're a new rider than you won't mind as you don't have anything to compare it to. But I'm also bitter from BMW F650 single lemon that cost me a lot of money in repairs and maintenance.
@@drewfliesbikes it's a single cylinder
The one I showed you has 800 miles $2,850.
I question this bike for beginners because it does have a lot of torque
How much this motorcycle?
Hi robot 🤖 you can get a Japanese import Honda cl400 I got the cb400ss there’s also a cb400tt
Hit it with WD
is it a made in china motorcycle=???
As soon as I saw the screw holding the seat on was under the rear mudguard I knew it wasn't for me....as I refurbish old bikes and screws in rusty places is a bad idea
Give me a Suzuki SV650 ....a real bike for not much more
a bike you can't leave outside in the rain cos of rust....hmmmm
No inner mud guard , mud and water all over the electric's
Nice looking bike. At that price they're giving RE a run for their money.. but what's the point of the dishonest dual exhaust?! 😲 itsa single!
The REs are made better. The 350 J engine is supposed to be super smooth. It is much heavier and has less horsepower. The Genuine would win in a race with ease.
efi low battery volts fuel pump no work ..carbs turn on the fuel and jump start .. alt will run ing system ..you get home ..efi your done for . carbs just rejet $ 2 part
This is a basic 400cc edition. The latest version is 440 cc military edition.all made in china Xin鑫Yuan源 motorcycle. rough quality 😄
i tried to find the 440cc online , no luck . you have a link ? thanks
no link...?
Not to sound disrespectful but naming the company “Genuine” and being Chinese it’s kind of sarcastic.
Huh??
The company "Genuine" is an American company headquartered in Chicago. What is your point? I guess you could say it is a genuine copy of the UJM of the late 60's and early '70's which were often patterned after the Brit bikes.
Paul Albares it's a chinese bike,, only sticker is from genuine.. this bike is called british ace in nepal, and it has like 30 names for 30 different countries
@@kamalkarki3120 I think his point is that the company 'Genuine' is NOT a Chinese company, so...
This bike look like Mash 400, full chinese and cheap bike
This is indeed the same bike as the Mash 400. In fact, it's a Shineray XY400 that is rebadged for different markets. The early ones had a Siemens injection and the reports out of France (Mash's home country) were that the EFI was poorly calibrated and the engine would continuously stall. This problem was completely eliminated with the switch to Delphi EFI. Otherwise, the bikes are considered well-made and reliable as long as they are properly maintained.
Im glad i dont live in comiefornia anymore cuase me in Alabama they dont require a smog checks
There are good reasons for CA to have smog gear requirements. Back in the 60's, the air quality was pretty horrendous there. You have to do things a little different in a state that dwarfs a state the size of Alabama. It'd not communism to use reason and technology to improve the air everyone breathes.
