The song is about drug addiction. So many suffer under that and this song brings a light to so many. Metal is a hard genre to get into. Those of us that listen to it regularly love seeing people stepping out of their “comfort” zone to experience a style of music that changed a lot of our lives. Y’all keep doin your thing and god bless y’all
I used to be so put off by metal; but then I got into grunge. I like to think of Alice in chains as my intro to metal. Then I discovered judas priest and the rest is history.
My father raised me on Metallica l being 25 now and my father 47. but i never knew the meaning to the songs, now I am older and listen to the songs it all makes sense and I understand the songs so much more
This is a personal favorite of mine for some of the reasons you stated. I am a recovering addict and used to listen to this at my lowest and now at my highest. I can now proudly say that I have been sober for just over 9yrs now.
The music itself tells a story. The first part is the addiction and want for the drug, the melodic calm part is the high and then slowly it fades away leaving you back to the addiction struggle and need for more.
You know I never broke it down like that myself. I caught the drug references from the beginning but the music telling the story I missed to this moment. Very nice.
Cliff walkin on that bass hard. The chemistry this lineup had was the best. The dedication to instrument mastery in rock and metal is a big part of successs.
Yet he made a few mistakes in his bassline, the biggest being the part after James Hetfield's guitar solo (the part "Master, where's the dreams that I've been after? (...)")
@@Music-world-20986 Well that should have been caught in the studio. I will say they were all really young at the time and feel Cliff would have only improved. It is plain to see his love for it. Megadeth fan here. Without mistakes we would all be...Perfect.
I would recommend Fade to Black, For whom the Bell Tolls, or One if your looking for more Metallica songs. There are probably other songs by them you would like. Also, the black album has some great songs.
Metallica has many great songs. For Whom The Bell Tolls, Unforgiven, Wherever I May Roam, Seek And Destroy. Megadeth has many great ones as well like Peace Sells, Symphony Of Destruction, & Angry Again. I would love to see you react to Pantera's Cemetary Gates or Children of Bodom Oops iI Did It Again cover
I still remember when I heard Master for the first time. A guy on my hockey team had the album, and i had a blank tape, we recorded it right there on his stereo. One of my all time favorite Albums
This song really shows how awesome Metallica really is. They were in their 20's when the did this song. Not only the idea to sing from the perspective of the drug all the while the music is telling the story of the addiction itself. The highs, the lows, the chase for more... it's a complete masterpiece. But most of all, this song highlighted the groups musical talents. The transitions within the song were performed flawlessly.
I think you guys are ready for a live video. My suggestion is Creeping Death at Tushino Airfield, Moscow 1991. There were an ESTIMATED attendance (meaning they stopped counting) of 1.6 MILLLION. It was part of the Monsters of Rock festival which included AC/DC headlining and The Black Crowes and Pantera featured at the same festival. Initially there were 500,000 tickets sold, but so many people showed ip that they let everyone in regardless of whether they had tickets. The crowd is BREATHTAKING.
Happy to see more people getting into and understanding metal music, when they otherwise thought it wasn't their cup of tea. There's some great stuff out there that can appeal to anyone. Metallica is the best.
Welcome to the Metal Family you 2! It feels good to see more people like you diving into this very misunderstood genre of music. So.. this is classic Metallica. The Album Master of Puppets came out in 1986 and it is considered to be one of the true pieces of musical art.
Forgot to comment... your nova reaction drew me in and earned you a new subscriber. Going backnand watching previous reactions now. Yea it is late but.... welcome again to the rabbit hole that is metallica. Check out the small hours blackend, the shortest straw, welcome home (sanaterium) from them.
Many have already mentioned this, but the song addiction is the drug and the puppet being the person. I've been into Rock / metal for a long time. Metal started coming into my life around 17, and it was the way I released a lot of my pent-up aggression cuz I moved around a lot of the kid and with quite a bit for being the new poor kid. So metal was my release. I had the long hair and all, and I was quite head-banger. Then I cut it all off and join the Marines at 20. Thank you guys for the reaction videos, Metallica is actually my favorite band. Even through their bad years, I remained a fan. No one has taken their top spot yet.
Other MetallicA fans will argue with me, disagree with me but I DO NOT CARE! "💫 R I 💫 N"✨...IS THEE #1 BEST SONG OFF OF THIS ALBUM PERIOD!!! It is the greatest metal instrumental EVER written...hands down!
I have always loved how it is written from the perspective of a drug ( The master) talking to the puppets ( drug addicts). Talking about how it controls you. It is killing you. Plus it will leave you dead. Some people don't tend to pick up on the message until words " needlework" crack and heroin and " chop your breakfast on a mirror" cocaine. Then its like "What the...! " As words hit harder. Beautifully written as an anti drug use song.
This song is about being addicted to heroin/cocaine. Once addicted, it's a "never ending maze" . Drugs rule your world. It's all about means and ways to getting and using more. I was once an addict in full blown addiction and this song represents what I went through. This song holds special meaning for me.
Saw your reaction to Fade to Black and now I’m here. You guys are a great reaction, new sub here! Edit: also, after I listen to this reaction and figure out what you’ve already reacted to with Metallica, I’ll list some great songs to react to by them. There are so many, their catalog is enormous and so much quality.
Yall need to react to metallica live Seattle even if it's a song you've reactes to before.. its incredible. All of us metal heads and you guy who are now metal heads would wish you were there... its amazing
I Loved y'alls reaction to Enter Sandman!!! However, you guys have to react to Enter Sandman LIVE in Moscow and see the Masters at work!! Be prepared to be absolutely BLOWN AWAY!! 🔥 🔥 🔥🤘
That song was written in the 80's. And for a great deal of people that partied back then, the drug of choice was cocaine. "Cut your breakfast on a mirror". I was around when all that was going on and I watched a few people get strung out on that stuff and it nearly destroyed them. I'm not going to lie... I did my share of it back in the day. But I was always aware of the dangers. Guess that's why I never got strung out and in a bad way. You can learn through other peoples mistakes whether people want to believe it or not.
Metal can be a hard genre to get into because of the speed and it can be difficult to understand what they are singing about, but as you listen to it it will slow down to your ear and you can understand the lyrics and hear all the intricacies of the instruments. This particular song is about drug addiction and how it takes control of you, in other words controlling you like a puppet master making your life all about looking for that next high.
In 2016, this album was added to The Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically or aesthetically significant”. Not bad for an album written and performed by 20 something year old kids.
Reading the lyrics and passed right on by the "chop your breakfast on a mirror" line without second glance. That's when most other reactions figure it out. Not much depth in the understanding the music part, just smiling and bopping your head. They did do a good job with ONE though.
Great reaction...The first portion of the song is chasing the drug, the second more ethereal section represents the high, and the high voltage third is the crash and burn...
The original kings of thrash metal! Yall get a new subscriber for this one! You guys should watch the VH1 Behind the Music on Metallica. You will understand so much about this band. Get a pizza and a six pack, sit down and relax and give the kings of thrash 45 minutes of your time You;ll thank me later.
Try some King Diamond. Anything off of there album The Eye is worthy of yalls attention. It's a story album. I may be mistaken but I believe it's about the Witch Trials in the year 1642. Genuinely creepy album. Metallica are HUGE fans of King Diamond.

You nailed it.
It is nice to see that I'm not the only one that realized that. 👍🤘
This song was 1 of many that helped me understand my own addiction
I didn't understand what this song was about growing up until one of my friends explained to me what "chop your breakfast on a mirror" meant
I always felt weird doing lines while listening to this song.
