The slow first part was their tribute to their fallen brother, bass player Cliff Burton, who had sadly been killed in a tragic tour bus accident that took Cliffs life. Jason Newsted (sitting in the middle during that part) replaced him three weeks after the funeral. This concert is by most fans considered one of the bands best.

If you're interested in hearing the whole thing, at the beginning they were playing a section of "To Live Is To Die", an instrumental on the same album. It was a fantastic way to come back in from a short break during the concert. The first hard beat is the actual beginning of MoP.

Kirk Hammett (curly black hair) plays lead guitar. So, most of the the solos are his. James Hetfield (rhythm guitar and singer) does a few solos, well placed and melodic. Jason Newsted (bass player) does a lot of the growling backing vocals. Jason left the band in 2000 and was replaced (eventually) by another great bassist, Robert Trujillo. . . . Cliff Burton was (for all intents and purposes) their first bassist and was amazing, but he died on the Master of Puppets tour in a bus accident. RIP, Cliff.

Its really not a happy song. Its about drug addiction and the drug is your master. Something us musicians from the 70s 80s know o do much. Every member of my first band are dead from drugs. Also lost my dad at 49yrs old from drugs and the constant parting rockstar lifestyle.. It sounds fun and at first it was but after a while its was a burden. but you two beautiful lady's want to call it a fun song then cool.
Now, while I do love my anti-drug songs like Dr Feel-good and Mr Brownstone... this one is the most terrifying. It had me scared to take my own pain meds after surgery..stupid chronic osteoarthritis 😂

This was from the “ and justice for all” tour which I seen twice once at the defunct and legendary Dayton Hara arena. This song is about being addicted to drugs/ cocaine and how it controls an addicts life.

Ahh the good old days when singer James Hetfield played that white guitar (can also be seen in the Nothing Else Matters official video). THAT white guitar.... a copy of a Gibson Explorer. It was made by a Japanese company called ESP. It was so good that Gibson, a USA company, got pissed off and sued ESP. ESP was ordered to stop importing any Gibson copies to the US. There is still a friendly rivalry between Gibson and ESP.

Well I confess that Metallica are my favourite band!!! And I listen to all the bands from Megadeth, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Pantera. The Melody that they bring to their song writing is what sets them apart!! You must listen to Orion!!!

The Master of Puppets is making you an addict, and while you are going down, he doesn't care. He is even laughing at you while you are about to die because of what he did to you in making you an addict.

I'm no expert, but to me the song (and the lyrics) represent the effects of of (any) addictive drugs on a normal person's life. First, the aggressive part, representing the thrill of the firs rides. With a warning in the lyrics, because everyone doing progressively harder drugs... on some level know where that road ends. The "nice" part in the middle, metaphorically speaking, isn't nice at all. It represents remembering what could have been, what life probably would have been, without the addiction. Then the third part gradually starts, and the person with the addiction realizes the loss, but no longer cares, and is lost.
Oh yeah... I meant it when I said "no expert". I'm a Maiden fan at heart. Metallica is just a nice hobby for me. I'll be in the corner, eating popcorn.

Geez....can't believe it's been near 40 yrs since I saw Metallica for the first time. I was 21 yrs then and it was early '83 in San Francisco at the Stone. Dave was on lead guitar and Cliff, I believe, had just joined the band. Cliff was very lively on stage, did a really good bass solo, but Dave was the one with the most energy on stage.
If you ladies get a chance to see them go an you'll love it. But too bad it's not the old school METALLICA but go they tour a lot overseas
