Hey ya'll. Just a quick note. I've had COVID for a little over a month and really sick. I've been really isolated and it can get lonely. I make sure to watch your videos everyday and it's helped. It's funny how alone this virus makes you feel because it's so contagious but ya'll have been like friends. I'm always one of the people to respond to your videos first because it's just refreshing to see real people have real reactions. So, thanks for helping through these hard days. I'm starting to get better- so, thanks again. I appreciate ya'll.
Hello Friend, I’m in tears after reading this message. We thank you so much for allowing us in your heart. We do these reactions to reach wonderful people like you. Praying for complete healing for you. Thank you for spreading the love.
It wasn't torture from the enemy. The soldier lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, eyesight from the mine/artillery shell. . He was trapped in his body with no way to communicate other than bobbing his head in Morse code. He was in a hospital where they were trying to help him but really weren't. He was in physical and mental agony and wanted it to end so he was bobbing out the Morse code message KILL ME. The nurse tried to help him but was stopped. The song is all about the horrors of war most of us ignore, are unaware of or overlook.
@@limitlessbyvlenoir5339 It's based on the book Johnny Got His Gun; Metallica bought the rights to the film to include clips from it in the music video
@@doctorhrtattack1185 I was meaning musically but I can see that take 100% about how they took the story from the book if that was what you were saying.
The song isn’t about war, it’s not anti-war or anything that. It’s set in war time, but the song’s message itself doesn’t pertain to war. It’s about the helpless situation he’s in. James Hetfield said it himself, it’s ultimately about being trapped. If the message of this song was presented as a meal, being trapped in that sort of hellish isolation would be the food, and war would just be the plate it’s being served on.
Landmine has taken my sight Taken my speech Taken my hearing Taken my arms Taken my legs Taken my soul Left me with life in hell. Its a song about a movie, JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN. About a soldier in WW1.
This has a whole new meaning to me since I returned from Iraq. I would like to encourage any veteran out there who feels lost and without hope to call the veterans crisis line. They really can help.

The fact that y'all are speechless says it all. You felt what the song is about. Y'all understand it better than you think. As a side note this was the first Metallica song I learned on drums. Keep it up and I'll keep watching!
Video is inspired by Johnny Got His Gun. The movie was a novel before it became a movie. One is the reason why I looked up the movie for to understand it more. The song itself is inspired by the movie as well.
a side note for this is that it was going to cost more to license the rights to the movie for the video than buying the rights so metallica now own the rights to the movie
The title 'Johnny got His Gun' play on the phrase "Johnny get your gun", a rallying call that was commonly used to encourage young American men to enlist in the military in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
@@loudnoises213 yep! So right especially during The Great War - WWI. I read this at 19 years old (I'm 50 now) and I still get that feeling like I did at 19.

This is one of Metallica's greatest songs. It's a lot to take in all at once, especially with all the movie clips. "Fade to Black" is another outstanding track that you may enjoy, but I would suggest doing the audio version only. It's also got a pretty deep message.

Love your reaction! The majority of Metallica's earlier songs have depth in meaning. "Sanitarium, (Welcome Home)" is probably the deepest in their catalog. I highly suggest a reaction to it. I promise you nothing short of a blown mind if you really focus on the lyrics. Peace, love, and good vibes y'all!
As someone who suffers from depression, it really hits me every time when he says, “If I had arms I could kill myself. If I had legs I could run away.”
I go through at least 5 stages of grief everytime I hear this song. So I don't listen to it often. I'm not a big metallca fan but appreciate their music. Great work you two.

It’s a song based on a book written and later made into a movie, by Dalton Trumbo “Johnny got his gun” a World War 1 novel about a traumatic casualty of a soldier who survived the war but lost his voice, his hearing, his sight, both arms and legs! He simply living on a machine and IV’s. He only has his thoughts with no one to talk to but himself. The song is based on a soldiers perspective, basically it can be about any war. I listen to both One & Faded to Black to help me some what understand my PTSD moments!! Thanks for your honest opinions not using political rhetoric like other channels but listening with your heart and opened mind!!! I thank you for your service to our Country!!! 🇺🇸
The message I took from this video is this: 1) War is an old man's game. 2) War has horrific consequences. 3) Authority does not care about wounded soldiers. 4) This song is why I love Metallica.
The way to feel the emotion, is to understand that the pain/horror content of each song is taken into context as a 3rd party character. Now, thinking of it that way will mentally pull you out being terrified..Its not you in the video, now your going to be in the right mindframe, now when you get the emotion of immense sadness and despair at the end of the video, right as reach peak disbelief, then you swing that emotion into how lucky we all are to not have had to go through these people's circumstances, it should remind us all that we have blessings all around us. The Men and Woman who went into the Wars of history, If you think about it, so many lives lost to fight for us to be here, including the lives of the enemy, should give you a sense of the magnitude of how much heaven and earth it took for us to be so blessed today. Bless you both as well, you two together put on a hell of a show, Peace! LuV!🍦🍦Ice Cream!!
Yes Metallica was a great Rock band. This song hit hard and as a soldier I understand the meaning behind the song. Now I'm a veteran me and my husband are both veterans. But please react to Pantera cemetery gates or cowboys from hell.

Hello you two! I truly hope that you and your Family and Friends are healthy and safe! Others who have commented have succinctly explained the; "Johnny Got His Gun", book and movie that Metallica brilliantly integrated into their video. Just wanted to give a shout out though to Metallica for winning the Grammy for this song in 1988!! They played this as it is in this production of the vid. It's just awesome to see harder Metal Bands appreciated for their obvious artistic talent and abilities. : ) Virtual Hugs!
Let’s please shout out to our military service folk and veterans, and our wounded warriors. Those guys who fought for something that they truly believed in and wanted.
The footage is from an old movie called Johnny Got His Gun (1971), about a soldier during World War 1, who got blown up by a mortar shell. He lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, and everything but his inner, torturous thoughts with no way to communicate or do anything about it. A literal 'basket case' and a living hell. He was asking, through Morse Code, that someone put him out of his misery. Sometimes death is better.
Now let me just tell you this was the most AMAZING SONG during the Big 4 at Yankee stadium. The place erupted like the Yankees won the World Series. Unforgettable.
Vid was from a movie called Johnny got his gun, based on the book by Dalton Trumbo. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy witch hunt and later wrote the screenplay to Spartacus under a pseudonym.
This song was from the movie johnnies got a gun that was based on a book of the same name about a solder vwho lost his arms, legs, sight and voice but was kept alive by machines if you read the book have lots of keanex because it is a tear jerker.
My favorite Metallica song! You guys are so awesome. You have such great energy and, at the risk of sounding shallow, you are a beautiful couple and I LOVE that you're always so well put together and your outfits always match.
The movie does have a few bright spots. The nurse opens the curtains, so he learns to count the days by the sun's warmth on his skin. He learns to tell when he's awake or asleep by whether he controls the images in his mind's eye or they control him. He learns to tell who is in the room by the number of footsteps and how heavy they are. In the end, though, the military officer draws the curtains after he thwarts the nurse, thereby destroying his most important connection to the outside world.
The hospital scenes are from a 1971 movie Johnny Got His Gun (fiction inspired by a gruesome true story about a Canadian soldier from World War I. During battle, a mortar shell hits very close to "Johnny" Joe Bonham, causing severe physical damage.). It's definitely an anti-war song. TOTAL BANGER!!!!!!!!
To help put this video into context, the footage in it is from the 1971 movie "Johnny Got His Gun" based on the classic novel by the same name... It's an anti-war film that was made and released during the Vietnam War Era and shines a light on the horrors and ignorance of war.
I was actually up watching the Headbanger's Ball on MTV for the world premier of this video! I think I still have it on VHS tucked away somewhere. it still gives me goosebumps.
That was awesome a reaction.... Great way to show the pain of a soldier... Until it's sleeps... Great song with video to show the pain of a drug addict... please react..new subscriber love from Florida 🌴
This was from a book called Johnny Got His Gun by guy named Dalton Trumbo. He was blacklisted in Hollywood in the 40s when Senator Joe McCarthy said that Communists were everywhere. He wrote the screen play for the movie Spartacus. This was Metallica's first video they made.
Metal is often times the vessel for the messages of people about issues/history that society can be too thin to talk about... Or want to think about. Our societies need to remember about our suffered past or we can be susceptible to walk about into the same problems again. Do not let other's suffering be in vein. We need to love each other.
From an old book, Johnny Got His Gun, later turned into the movie used in tge video. Soldier lost his arms, legs, and face. Couldn't hear, speak, or see. Was using Morris code by hitting his head against the pillow. Someone finally recognized what he was saying..."Kill me."
This is my favorite Metallica song my top 3 are 1. One 2. Nothing Else Matters 3. Turn The Page ( A Bob Segar cover if you react to it make sure you get the official video) Welcome to Metallica Land hold on for the ride! 💜🤘🏾
Sometimes the greatest hell is being stuck in your own mind in a constant state of pain and there is no One that can help you or is stopped from helping you because it's not in their interest.
Johnny Got His Gun is such a deep movie and I am glad Metallica used it. 1st time that I saw this video, I already knew the movie, for I watched with my family as a kid. Yes, I am older.
If you never heard this song...then went into it knowing that the man this is about had a healthy brain, but no speech, vision, hearing, or limbs (meaning he can't communicate anything!) but wanted to die!!! It is such a hard song to hear without crying!!! I get tears in my eyes everytime I hear, and hated Heavy Metal growing up in the 1980's. Metallica changed all that! I was a huge rap and pop fan back then. This is a song that anyone who understands it, can't deny how special it is and the message they are trying to send!
One of my best friends was a Korean War vet. He always said most men were willing to die for their country, but not be maimed just short of death for a lifetime. He came back intact, but some of his buddy's fates haunted him to his last day.
Great song to react to. As others have said, this song is in essence an anti war song. The clips of the movie they use can be tough to watch but I think that is the entire point. If we want to send our young men and women off to war, we shouldnt hide from the dark sides of war. Its not just about the victories, its about the price we pay to achieve those victories.
When I hear and see people disrespecting our Military and our Flag, I don't think anything can enrage me more. What those men and women go through to defend our freedom is so remarkable and so selfless, they deserve a hell of a lot more than they receive! We have athletes that can throw a ball in a hoop and they are worshiped while these heroes are just struggling to stay afloat or are living on the streets trying to stay alive. Makes no sense.......
It's about a soldier who stepped on a landmine and lost everything. He was being fed through a tube and had all kinds of machines hooked up that were keeping him alive. He preferred death to the painful life he was experiencing.
This actually scenes from an antiwar movie called Johnny got his gun from the early 70s. Metallica bought the rights to the movie just for this video. I would highly recommend watching it.
Metallica has done quite a few songs that center around war and the horrors. Disposable Hero, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Don’t Tread On Me these are a few and they’re all amazing.

This song and Faded To Black helped me recover some on my PTSD issues then and now! When ever I feel really down and unsure about myself? I listen to both One & Faded to Black to help me some what understand my PTSD moments!! Thanks for your honest opinions not using political rhetoric like other channels but listening with your heart and opened mind!!! I thank you for your service to our Country!!! 🇺🇸
You just made me respect y'all even more now. That's one of the best songs ever. I hoped you liked it.
I love that Metallica bought the rights to the film, Johnny get your gun, to use the clips in the video.
The message I took from this video is this:
1) War is an old man's game.
2) War has horrific consequences.
3) Authority does not care about wounded soldiers.
4) This song is why I love Metallica.
To the Army 🪖 guys that get hurt 🤕 seen them live in concert singing this song, that's deep 🇺🇸
The way to feel the emotion, is to understand that the pain/horror content of each song is taken into context as a 3rd party character. Now,
thinking of it that way will mentally pull you out being terrified..Its not you in the video, now your going to be in the right mindframe, now when you get the emotion of immense sadness and despair at the end of the video, right as reach peak disbelief, then you swing that emotion into how lucky we all are to not have had to go through these people's circumstances, it should remind us all that we have blessings all around us. The Men and Woman who went into the Wars of history,
If you think about it, so many lives lost to fight for us to be here, including the lives of the enemy, should give you a sense of the magnitude of how much heaven and earth it took for us to be so blessed today. Bless you both as well, you two together put on a hell of a show, Peace! LuV!🍦🍦Ice Cream!!
This just shows the power of music and the story it tells! Great song!
Metallica had an album titled S&M. They played with a symphony, so S&M was Symphony and Metallica. Great album.
Yea just came out
Thank you for reacting to this one. It's even better live. When concerts are allowed again, I HIGHLY recommend going to see them.
This is one of my favorite songs ever, and def. my favorite by this band! Im so glad you all decided to do a reaction vid to this :)
Love this video, love Metallica and also love Jason Robards as the father - what a great actor!
You're correct, so sorry for vets that go thru any war.
I love how people are still discovering this masterpiece
Yes Metallica was a great Rock band. This song hit hard and as a soldier I understand the meaning behind the song. Now I'm a veteran me and my husband are both veterans. But please react to Pantera cemetery gates or cowboys from hell.
Ladies and gentlemen SHE gets it! Great reaction from the both of you. Thank you and have a great day.
This is based on a movie about WW I and it is about the horrors of war and what some soldiers through when they come home. You guys got the message quite well.
Great masterpiece!!! Special and genuine style! I appreciate when people react to other genres when rock is not your first choice, i really appreciate your reactions to rage against the machine and Metallica... This song is called ONE because he lost limbs and senses cuz the war and rather die
Loved the looks on both of your faces like..."what did we just see?!!" LOL. Thank you for your reactions.
There is ALOT of reaction videos out there now but I love yours because you embrace all genres of music & your attitude towards each other & life is really inspirational.
Horns up 🤘

Hello you two! I truly hope that you and your Family and Friends are healthy and safe! Others who have commented have succinctly explained the; "Johnny Got His Gun", book and movie that Metallica brilliantly integrated into their video. Just wanted to give a shout out though to Metallica for winning the Grammy for this song in 1988!! They played this as it is in this production of the vid. It's just awesome to see harder Metal Bands appreciated for their obvious artistic talent and abilities. : ) Virtual Hugs!
Metallica-Master of puppets live in Seattle 1989
Let’s please shout out to our military service folk and veterans, and our wounded warriors. Those guys who fought for something that they truly believed in and wanted.
The footage is from an old movie called Johnny Got His Gun (1971), about a soldier during World War 1, who got blown up by a mortar shell. He lost his arms, legs, hearing, voice, and everything but his inner, torturous thoughts with no way to communicate or do anything about it. A literal 'basket case' and a living hell. He was asking, through Morse Code, that someone put him out of his misery. Sometimes death is better.
He's left just a torso. No sight , voice or hearing. Is that existing? Respect to all soldiers past and present.
Now let me just tell you this was the most AMAZING SONG during the Big 4 at Yankee stadium. The place erupted like the Yankees won the World Series. Unforgettable.
One. Truly by himself. "Trapped in myself body my holding cell"
Vid was from a movie called Johnny got his gun, based on the book by Dalton Trumbo. He was blacklisted during the McCarthy witch hunt and later wrote the screenplay to Spartacus under a pseudonym.
For sure react to Metallica's Sanitarium. That song is in a league of its own
This song was from the movie johnnies got a gun that was based on a book of the same name about a solder vwho lost his arms, legs, sight and voice but was kept alive by machines if you read the book have lots of keanex because it is a tear jerker.
Just brilliant! Metallica, none better.
Same here. My friends and I were so excited for it and BAM. Frikkin brilliant, to this day, and sadly as relevant.
One of my favorites from them. Thanks for reacting to this one.
My favorite Metallica song 💯‼️♥️🙌🏼
Loved the pause at the end. This is hardcore. Creeped me out when I was a teenager.
Your reaction pretty well matched mine when I first heard this. As you say, it's DEEP.
One of my best friends was a Korean War vet. He always said most men were willing to die for their country, but not be maimed just short of death for a lifetime. He came back intact, but some of his buddy's fates haunted him to his last day.
To me its the best song they ever did!
When you feel it you know you're human.
woah. was the guy on the bed. the little boy in the begginning asking what was democracy?
Metallica has done quite a few songs that center around war and the horrors. Disposable Hero, For Whom the Bell Tolls, Don’t Tread On Me these are a few and they’re all amazing.
Johnny got his gun was a novel from the early 1900's, They made a movie based on the book. The movie was made in 1939.
