Black Sabbath were a socially conscious band while the lunatic fringe were calling them Satan worshipers.
Their music was so heavy and shocking that a lot of people just ignored the lyrics.

      You're only scratching the surface.
They had tons of songs & if there was never no Black Sabbath. There would've never been no Ozzy Osbourne!
The guitar player Toni Iommi is who all metal guitar players looked up to & wanted to play like.
Everyone from Dave Mustaine of MegADetH, James Hetfield & Kirk Hammett of MetallicA, Dimebag Darrell of PanterA & many other metal guitarists.
Tony Iommi & Black Sabbath created Heavy Metal.

Deep purple was the first heavy metal band my friend. I saw them in 1967, three years before sabbath. But metal took all its roots from the greatest guitar player in history- jimi hendrix. I saw hendrix on 1969 and when sabbath came out we all thought they were just hendrix wannabes. Hendrix is the true originator of metal.

There was never a video to that song when it came out...way too early for that. The video was made by a fan and I love it! I love that dystopian yet timeless feel to it...CCTV cameras...war never changes, just the weapons get more powerful

It's not fan-made, it's a short film called "Motherland," which has nothing to do with the song.

Ozzy had (has) one of the most haunting voices of all time. Remember this song was released during the Vietnam war. While controversial, this music fit the times. A lot of folks never really tried to understand what the band was saying and tried to write off heavy metal as some genre for devil worshipers and conspiracy theorists. You have to ask yourself if this was written today, would it receive the same criticisms. Probably yes, but for different reasons.

A classic anti-war song done in heavy metal. Listened to this while in the Navy and at sea off the coast of Vietnam in 1971. Would get high when listening to Black Sabbath this was during the Vietnam War. Helped us to keep our sanity.

The best anti-war ever and I introduced Black Sabbath to my 2 sons. They needed to hear it & watch it.
Stones, Paint it black wasn't associated with the Vietnam war but the song radiated with the warriors in Vietnam.
But it was the song @ the end of the movie Full Metal Jacket.
    Great,great song.
