Pierce is quite a lot of fun for many monsters, even if there are better ammo types and matchups. I recommend trying it since it isn't a huge hindrance unless you're doing a speed run or something. I may be biased since my favorite builds tend to be memes anyway.
Play what you think is fun! I(Jinx) like to run wyvern ammo only meme runs or wyvernheart only capture runs for the lulz. These kinds of analysis aren't meant to tell you which ammo to play, its just to give a factual explanation of the relative strength of each ammo type.
Don't worry, my comment isn't to imply that the video is saying to only play good ammo types or that pierce is good in spite of the math proving otherwise, it's more for the people that take this sort of thing too seriously. There were already a few people in the comments that gave that impression, so I thought I'd add my two cents.
Part of me often feels that light and heavy bowgun should be thought of as subclasses of the same weapon, seeing as while they pull from the same ammo resource different ammo types are suited to different weapons. I also think that a lot of the time the discussion around ammo types gets distorted by the max dps/min TTK side of things, when really it should be about the viability of each ammo type- does the ammo do its job? For example, when Jinx brought up slicing I knew he was going to say it doesn't do enough damage to be a primary damage type, but what matters with slicing is does it do sufficient slicing damage to be a toolbox option for slicing part breaks, which it does. Of course when it comes to viability of damage-type ammo, there's always going to be the question of "what counts as viable to you?" For example, I consider pierce ammo to be an entirely viable ammo type for the monsters it works against, mostly Xeno, Odo and Bazel, because it provides me with good safety during a hunt as a main ammo type when supplemented with the various other ammo types I use. Someone else might define sub-5 minutes to be viable, and their pool of choices is naturally going to be much smaller than someone who defines viable as sub-30, or someone who defines it as sub-15 with no faints.
Hello! For anyone new watching this after all this time, although the video was accurate in its time, that is no longer the case. Sticky does a lot of damage on its own, (but clusters and wyvern ammo still bump sticky HBGs DPS high) Pierce and normal have kicked up in damage Ironically spread is still good, but it's hard to have openings unless you're doing a scripted heroics run. Less openings = less DPS Elemental in HBG is still kinda bad. Sad. Slicing is still not good If you're looking for more accurate builds and damage guides for HBG, I recommend watching Lord Viettner. He makes good guides for modern MH:WI patches. Hope this helps anyone
Any chance you guys can do a video covering the effects of CC ammo (paralysis, sleep, etc)? I'm particulary interested in the effects of exhaust ammo and whether or not it's worth using at all in a hunt.
I use slicing on kirin and don't have any trouble killing him before running out of ammo, that's with sleep bombing once or twice and LBG instead of HBG though. The mobility makes dodging his lightning a breeze and slicing ignores his "I'm angry so you can't hit me" bullshit. Plus even if ammo gets tight for whatever reason, there's two slashberry spots right where he sleeps, it's like the game wants you to use it on him.
I'm confused why Sticky isn't considered as a legit option? I play DD + Artillery3 + Sticky3 and think i deal top notch dmg (besides cluster which you shouldn't use in MP). It ignores weakspots and since the impact dmg is negligible you can fire from as far away as you still hit
I came to ask the same thing. It's definitely one of TheGameconomist's recommended ammo types, especially for ease-of-use. ruclips.net/video/ECc7KPvP8eA/видео.htmlm27s
I think pierce is decent enough really. Consider the range too. Unlike spread and clust that u need to come closer to monster/stun or trap them, u could shoot more pierce even the monster is distant.
Selfish question, but can we get a video when you break down your math, like with the frame measurements? As a person who sucks at math, watching someone crunch the numbers is really interesting, almost like watching a paint session.
I do a lot of my chill hunting with the KT support lbg now, rf normal 2 on that does a surprising amount of damage and you can ignore almost all of a monsters shenanigans with it.
Pierce should do the same damage as spread on the averaged sized T2 monster. It's more difficult to line up shots that go down the full length of the monster than it is to spam spread shot the face.
This would be true if the monster had the exact same weakpoint HZV through their entire length. Unfortunately, monsters are not designed this way. Realistically, you get maybe 2-4 ticks on the weakpoint and then the rest go through tanky Hit zones. These hitzones tend to have around 1/3 the HZV so they take about 1/3 the damage and don't get WEX applied to them. On top of that, a good portion of your ticks land in the Damage Mod Deadzone, so they don't get that 20-40% damage bonus. Every pellet of Spread gets that damage bonus and lands on the ideal weakpoint. Assuming you do get a full length shot, these mechanics make each pierce shot still deal less damage than spread. Also Pierce has a tick limit, somewhere around 10-15, where afterwards the later ticks deal 1 damage regardless of how close to max crit distance you are. Realistically, pierce just doesn't interact well with the damage mods mechanics and HZV distribution on monsters in the game. Which is why its so weak compared to spread, even on matchups like ATXeno.
Oh snap, I'm sorry I made you type out the whole explanation. I meant I wanted them to change pierce to reward the same damage to average sized T2 monsters as spread. Since it's more difficult to line up full length body shots than shoot just one weak point with spread. And it would make sense (in a intuitive sort of way, so I'm not talking about mechanics just what I want for the game) to have pierce do more damage against a giant sized monster since it goes super deep into it.
@@MrNamenamenamename it would make sense for giant monsters to have a high hit zone on the center of the model , something that only pierce or stabs attacks can reach. it would balance out things that hit only on the surface with others that go trough it. you can even make it cannon by saying its a vital organ like the monster heart or something
Wish they made recovery shots and the demon/armor shots better. Those things do so little for all the hassle of aiming at your comrades with a slow bullet.

Wyvern Ammo does enough DMG to kill all non elder-dragon monster (you may need to use the special ammo on some monsters). And even if you did not enough dmg, just tp back to base and refill or use cluster lvl 2/3. I use Teostras Flames to farm every monster (except behemoth and KT) and finish the quest often under 5 min. Its just to easy to stun lock some of the monsters :D

Honestly I've always thought that Capcom in the past have nerfed ammo and weapons just TOO much. Like I understand why slicing had to be nerfed, but it really didn't have to be THAT nerfed imo. Spread is a little too op imo, but clusters I feel that with it's skill ceiling, is fair to work with.
Most of what makes cluster powerful is the secondary stuff permitting it to be powerful, namely the many, many ways to immobilise a monster, rather than the ammo itself. I feel like if slicing was given an internal partbreaker mechanic when hitting slicing zones it'd be firmly back in the list of things to bring to a hunt for toolbox use, but it was never intended to be a main DPS ammo type. Nerfs are always difficult to talk about when there's so many levels of skill and so many styles of play, it's hard to talk about all the possible effects really.

Slot in 7 attack decos 3-4 agitator and 1 peak deco
I have to get back into MHW. I haven't been able to play since the first Kulve siege. I have a build for every ammo type except wyvern and dragon. Dragon ammo is so show that it's comical.
