I never thought that would happen, but I’m now actually fighting monsters instead of also my weapon, and I’m doing hunts like never before. Just seems to fit my more observant playstyle much better. Nothing beats timing a charged move to perfection when you learned when you’ve got your opening. Imo the slower weapons are so incredibly satisfying to use and much, much less braindead than I thought they would be initially.
I have to say thank you for giving the Lance its proper respect. It was one of the final styles i learned in the series thanks to Generations, and your description is perfect. It is NOT flashy, but it gets the job done SO well, and the ability to be so accurate with your hits and just ALWAYS in the monster's personal space is not something most players really understand. It is NOT slow. Base walk-speed doesn't automatically indicate what a weapon does or is capable of. Kudos. I've taken a few months off Hunting to clear some backlog from up to 20 years ago, and seeing videos like this has me itching to go back year after year.
All of the 14 different weapons make this game series very unique. And because they are all so well balanced in niches and playstyles, that can also be customized to fit your own desire, I really do not understand why people want more weapon types in the next game. We do not really need more weapons. we already get new skins and abilities for the weapons we have in every entry.
True, though I think it's the idea of the weapon. Like if there's a new weapon, I'm pretty sure a lot of people want some fists lol It might be similar to dual blades, but the thought of just punching monsters in the face just *hits* different. Pun intended 🗿
@@Hyper_Steel Maybe... wouldn't really make sense for me, since how large do these punching gauntlets have to be to realistically damage even a Jagras.

As an SnS player, just wanna note that the shield block is better than you might think. First 100 hrs or so I only used it for blocking roars, Tzitzi flashes, etc., but after playing lance for a while and coming back to SnS, I found myself using it reflexively against bigger attacks, and it’s actually not bad.
@@ssj1507 Definitely useful for SnS, though I guess if you want to specialize in blocking why not use a lance variation and laugh in the face of death? SnS is so mobile that you can simply avoid almost anything. That’s why a lot of us find out late, or never know, that the shield can actually block.
I main both Lance & SnS, and I can say that knowing which monster's damaging attack actually having a low knock back is super convenient when blocking with a SnS.
@@TanegiHoneydew Very true, though in my case, I’m not sure the term “main” means anything anymore. I’ve been playing the hell out of pretty much every weapon (melee, don’t care for ranged.) Just finished a full World playthrough with Insect Glaive and starting a Rise playthrough with it as well. This series is addictive.
@@ELMFO1999Hunting Horn is peak White Mage gameplay, because the best way to support your team is by caving a monster's face in so the team can attack without fear of being attacked back.
I use GS, GL, LBG, HH, S&S, CB, LS, Hammer and Lance. What that says about me? I adapt to the monster I'm hunting. 17:19 - Most relatable moment ever no matter what weapon you're using.
I have been a lance main since tri ultimate. I love the lance with all my heart. But. I also like the insect glaive and the hunting horn and will get in the mood to run those. But as a lance main. When it's time to buckle down and fight a challenging monster. I pick up my trusty shield and I poke the monster in the tush.
I give every new player the same advice. Finish the first mission with whatever weapon (it usually doesn’t even involve fighting anything so it doesn’t matter). Try out each weapon for like 2 minutes when you get access to the training ground in town. Pick 3 weapons that felt good from that short trial and use each of them to hunt the first big monster once. And of course, I remind them that picking a weapon isn’t a commitment. Especially in the early game, it takes 1 or 2 hunts of a monster to get the material for a weapon, so it really easy to get deep into a weapons low rank trees even if you change completely from one to another.
Just started this game (and any MH gane for that matter) last weekend. For me, the Insect Glaive has been my favorite of all the weapons. Staying above the monsters' attacks, mounting regularly, and having no issue smacking the flying monsters made it an obvious choice for me. Next in line for me is the Charge Blade. Took a minute to learn exactly how to work it, but after I did, I think it's awesome charging it up in one "stance" and having to switch to unleash all its energy. Finally, my third choice is the Hunting Horn. I've always enjoyed playing support roles, though.
New to monster hunter and I just finished my first playthrough of world. Started out with the dual blades but switched to the long sword once I got to the Coral highlands. Really loved both weapons, even if I’m far from good. Definitely looking forward to getting better and trying more weapons in the future
Man! What an awesome game! Thanks for making content on this masterpiece 👍🏼 I started with LS for world, then GL for Iceborn. In end game, I played every weapon except ranged weapons and IG.
I love glaive (especially in rise) i love my damage potential and saving nearly all of my potions because i never get hit during battle (thanks evade extender and window)
Really enjoy your content! 👌 I love the HH for how it has no move rotation like other weapons. You use each move at the right time in the right order to line up the buff you want. Very interesting and fun playstyle and challenge.
The SnS's versatility is absolutely amazing. You can run offensive, defensive, and supportive builds easily. For me it's hard to use any other weapon without feeling like I'm missing something, because the SnS can do every thing.
CB/Horn/HBG are my favorites ! But I pretty much enjoy playing all weapons except bow (gets too samey for me), greatsword (really prefer more regular damage), SnS (don’t like the backstep input of all things…) and lance (still learning a lot of weapons, just really not used to that amount of sidestepping). Respect to every weapin though they all add something
One more plus for Lance. You can jump in the middle of your charge attack, letting Lance mount monsters without the need for ledges. Plus, with CC you can keep the target softened up all day, every day
Gunlance here :) I picked it up and it instantly clicked. I also learned how to use Greatsword, Hunting Horn , Switch axe and Lance but at the end of the day I always go back to my boom stick. :) I also have to point out that the gunlance is quite literaly a meme: - would you like a melee weapon or a firearm - YES
This was my first MH. Started with the charge blade 'cause it looked cool. Tried almost every other weapon, liked a number of them, but the charge blade rules supreme.
The real beauty of the franchise is the fact that there is weird playstyles like the blunt LS where you do blunt dmg on unsheathe attacks like the AI attacks. And full support or full berserker HH styles. There really is unlimited ways to play this blessed series of amazing games.
My only advice to people who are looking for their first weapon is to literally just use what you think is cool. In the long run, all that matters is how a weapon makes you feel, not how big the numbers are.
I still remember when i blocked fatalis cone breath with my lance shield and my friend hide behind me and lived while im yelling the reinhardt quote “ I SHALL BE YOUR SHIELD”
What is also very interesting, I think, is the fact that when you play another weapon the whole game changes. Its like playing a different game from what you were used to play. I have played for over 300h with sword and shield and then switched to light bowgun and the difference is insane. Really a cool thing that you can change the whole way you play this game with "just" another weapon.
Fantastic video, and extremely helpful. I started playing Rise first and started with Lance, and then eventually transitioned into gunlance. Now i'm playing world and am sticking with gunlance. I enjoy them both very much since i much rather prefer to block attacks outright then try to dodge them in the first place. Sometime in the future I might want to try something like HBG or GS since they can also block, albeit at not the same level. Sword and shield sounds super cool but imo it doesn't do enough damage for my own taste
Sounds like what you might be looking for is a charge blade. It's got top teir blocking and phatt damage. It's really not as hard to learn as people make it out to be.
A very awesome and informative video, really loved how you hyped up all of the weapons. For me, I utterly fell in love with Charge Blade and have been maining it ever since 4U, although I have recently started messing around with Sword and Shield while helping my friend blitz through the base game to get them up to where their old save was before they switched platforms, and I'm falling in love with that too. If my love still holds when I lose the advantage of being in MR gear against HR monsters, we'll see, I don't quite know if I trust myself with it against something in MR yet XD However, I might be a rare person who can come down with a final answer on if S&S or GS is the true OG, assuming what I know is accurate and there wasn't an earlier demo disk. Because yes; I own the Monster Hunter demo disk that came in the original release of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening. Compared to todays demos... it wasn't great. I cannot actually remember if there was more then one quest included, at least I can only remember there being one to hunt some velociprey. But what I can remember is the weapon you walk in carrying, and I'm fairly certain was the only one in the game: The greatsword.
i just started yesterday and i’ve been having a lot of fun with the insect glaive but i might have to check out hunting horn or heavy bowgun now, different ammo types or songs sound like they’d be really fun to adapt to for each enemy, also the longswords iai spirit slash looks like it’s so cathartic to pull off
the special thing that i find unique with the hammer is that its extremely fast for being a hammer type of weapon. Every other game, the hammer is usually the slowest weapon but not in monster hunter
Lance is my favorite weapon by far. I wasn't really drawn to it in the beginning but when I tried it I fell in love haha. The dmg uptime on monster is insane and I love how rewarding it is to chain counter attack and offensive guard skill proc.
I used to be a bow main but picked up the games again and switched to gunlance. I'm loving it. Thinking about challenging myself to beat monsters with every weapon type.
As someone who has played since the beginning of mh I was originally a s&s main for the first few games then gradually shifted to the longsword, switch axe in tri and triu, and when the charge blade was introduced I instantly knew it was for me. And I never have and never will be a gunner
I love long sword when i see what it can do. Perfect weapon for me because you have to time perfectly ib order to make hse of the weapon. Played greatsword and dual blades also like them but long sword is the best choice for me
My favourites are the Hunting Horn and Switch Axe. For both of them, once you know your combos, you always on the offensive. The best perk of Hunting Horn is that if I see a teammate with a bow or DB, I can grab one with a stamina song a'd allow them to truly go nuts. I also love the Hammer. What can I say ? I love giving concussions to monsters ^^
Bows are an absolute grind to get (Since it's an elemental weapon and you need a build for each element) but if you get the full build, surprisingly bow becomes the highest DPS weapon and most used for solo speedruns.
Yeah, Long sword it is. Never played a Monster Hunter game before, but the LS just feels like it's for me. I like the idea of countering instead of dodging and the animations are just so cool. I may move on to other weapons eventually, but the easy to pickup, hard to master feels like it will serve a new player like me well.
Started my MH journey with Rise and played with Dual Blades all the way through. Went back to do world and am halfway through iceborne having done purely switchaxe and falling in love with it. More methodical play styles that take more thought and have more intricacies, while being flashy. Really want to do full playthroughs with other weapons like the chargeblade, insect glaive, and gunlance. Maybe others but those look up my alley.
10:34 Am I one of the only people who feel like, given optimal gameplay loops, switchaxe and charge blade should swap nominal focuses (Charge Axe and Switchblade)? I know Charge Axe is the Japanese name for CB, but I feel like Switchaxe would be better served if it was named after the part of the weapon that it was built for.
I chose the Switch Axe as a new player and I have been enjoying the game. Once you have a general idea of the monsters attacks, you will be able to attack aggressively and do massive damage with the combos
As a an oldie who's first was monster hunter tri on the wii (yes somehow i was able to play it fine) i had skipped a lot of MH and defaulted to long sword, but after completing the main quest in world i picked up GunLance and boy being able to tank a nergigante high dive whilst dishing out damage changed my mind completely. Right now i'm trying a charge blade playthrough and after the first hurdle i'm getting good, but GunLance keeps calling to me, so i found my main with the bow being a close second.
I started with Hunting Horn in earlier games but ended up maining HBG. Upon starting world i did try all the weapons for a bit but still ended up with my HBG. The different weapons caters to different people and that what i love about this
The best advice I can give for finding your weapon is to just try all of them. Test them in the training area. Do a hunt with them to see if you like the playstyle. I never thought I'd like gunlance until I just tried it and pretty quickly had more hunts on it than any other weapon.
I’ve played around with a lot of the weapons, my first ever weapon that I used was the Bow and to this day is one of my favorite weapons but out of all the weapons I like the charge blade the most it’s lots of fun and dishes out tons of damage. For Wilds I’m gonna go in with a Charge Blade and Bow combo allowing me to use my two favorite weapons
Dual blades main here! I agree with most of what you said, but with the exception of “easy to play.” Dual blades are fairly easy to pick up but I would say are some of the most difficult to master. Not quite longsword levels but close. The range is so short that you have to be ridiculously close and aggro and that just does not work for some creatures, especially in MR. Otherwise, you nailed it!
Just recently got into monster hunter world as my first MH game. Completed base game with GS which felt great and quite easy as long as you’re patient (only carted once to Daora soloing through the story) Switched to the switch axe and am having a ton of fun learning the combo transitions. I want to switch to another weapon soon but am paralysed by choice. Narrowed it down to lance, bow, charge blade or hunting horn but just can’t decide 😅
I started out with Longsword back in base World and Icebrone, tried ChargeBlade, SwitchAxe, GS, Hammer and DualBlades. Now, comming back to MHW Iceborne as I tried Rise and didn't like it, I began trying all the weapons in Iceborne and to my surprise I LOVED the HuntingHorn, especially the safi one where you could even customize the songs u get on it. But my main actually became the LANCE. This weapon is incredible. I did a "speed run" test to see how fast I could solo Tempered Ruiner Nergi with all my full fatalis builds on 4 weapons: GS, HAMMER, DualBlades and Lance and to my surprise I got by far the fastest time to kill on Lance. Its incredibly underated and quickly became my favourite weapon. Its suprisingly mobile thanks to its charge so u can chase the monster easy without sheathing and you can stick to its head like glue due to the amazing defence. You don t have to wait for openings like with others. And I can't tell you how satisfying it is to get the perfect cluch counter or normal counter every time you get attacked. This weapon is AMAZING. Long story but I LOVE THIS GAME and can't wait for Wilds to come out. Sitting at 600hours in Iceborne now. Will go over 1k till then most def.

@@ZeroThreeJuicehammer is the way
I play switch axe because it feels like playing two weapons at a time
I love the flow when you hunt switching from axe to sword or back and the look of the weapon is awesome
I’ve always been a fan of axe like weapons in video games and what better to have one that can also be a sword
I play switch axe because it makes me feel like a hunter from Bloodborne
The first time i used switch axe on mhp3rd i LOVED IT
Goddamn its fun
@@DembiBroxcharge blade 😅
While true, I still want Gauntlets. Lemme punch Zinogre in the fucking snout.
True, though I think it's the idea of the weapon. Like if there's a new weapon, I'm pretty sure a lot of people want some fists lol
It might be similar to dual blades, but the thought of just punching monsters in the face just *hits* different. Pun intended 🗿
@@Hyper_Steel Maybe... wouldn't really make sense for me, since how large do these punching gauntlets have to be to realistically damage even a Jagras.
@@dragonlord4194fuck it, longsword already can counter a nuclear bomb, give me some FISTS.
@@dragonlord4194Well, If the hunter can pick up a Great Sword, I'm sure they'll be fiiiine.
That's why it's in a Fantasy setting, so that we can look past some... questions. Like the Swax, how the hell does it transform like that? It don't make sense but I ain't letting that stop me from transforming it into a sword and exploding the monster's face 👌
Guard up is the best skill lmao
@@ssj1507 Definitely useful for SnS, though I guess if you want to specialize in blocking why not use a lance variation and laugh in the face of death? SnS is so mobile that you can simply avoid almost anything. That’s why a lot of us find out late, or never know, that the shield can actually block.
Also back stepping into perfect rush is fun. Back step has a lot of i frames, so its a good tool
My go to weapon will always be hunting horn. I’ve always been a support player.
i do not play hunting horn as a support
@@ELMFO1999Hunting Horn is peak White Mage gameplay, because the best way to support your team is by caving a monster's face in so the team can attack without fear of being attacked back.

Actually, do other FF entries also have AoE flashbang or is this purely a 14 thing?
I use GS, GL, LBG, HH, S&S, CB, LS, Hammer and Lance. What that says about me? I adapt to the monster I'm hunting.
17:19 - Most relatable moment ever no matter what weapon you're using.
I have been a lance main since tri ultimate. I love the lance with all my heart. But. I also like the insect glaive and the hunting horn and will get in the mood to run those. But as a lance main. When it's time to buckle down and fight a challenging monster. I pick up my trusty shield and I poke the monster in the tush.
Charge Blade & SnS are my favorites in World. Both weapons are incredibly fun to use and have a ton of depth you can learn with them.
Hammer all the way since I started playing MH
My top four favorite weapons are insect glaive, switch axe, heavy bowgun, and hammer
Thanks for making content on this masterpiece 👍🏼
I started with LS for world, then GL for Iceborn. In end game, I played every weapon except ranged weapons and IG.
Once I learned there was more to lance than '3 hits and hop' it quickly became my favorite weapon by a goddamn mile. :D
What are these other hits ?
Tera you forgot about the most important feature of the Greatsword: the allmighty kick!
As a lance main, it's a breath of fresh air every time people debunk misconceptions about the lance playstyle.
I loove playing hunting horn so much, took me 3 entire days to choose a weapon, and i found it ❤️
I love glaive (especially in rise) i love my damage potential and saving nearly all of my potions because i never get hit during battle (thanks evade extender and window)
Really enjoy your content! 👌 I love the HH for how it has no move rotation like other weapons. You use each move at the right time in the right order to line up the buff you want. Very interesting and fun playstyle and challenge.
Can't wait until we start seeing videos like this for MH Wilds
The SnS's versatility is absolutely amazing. You can run offensive, defensive, and supportive builds easily. For me it's hard to use any other weapon without feeling like I'm missing something, because the SnS can do every thing.
Generally prefer slower weapons maybe becos I’m old lol. Switchaxe/GS/Hammer for me. Sometimes LBG just to cheese sieges and Rajang.
Just finished watching your teir list and wow your commentary has serious improved less pausing and more to the point keep up the work
I play gunlance... IS MY BOOMSTICK
I watch these even tho I have played every weapon and have 1000s of hours I love them
Happy to hear that! I think we all just like talking about the weapons we love haha
One more plus for Lance. You can jump in the middle of your charge attack, letting Lance mount monsters without the need for ledges. Plus, with CC you can keep the target softened up all day, every day
Charge blade and switch axe 👌🏾👌🏾🔥🔥🔥🔥 respect to the hunting horn players. Y'all the real goats in This game
Gunlance here :) I picked it up and it instantly clicked. I also learned how to use Greatsword, Hunting Horn , Switch axe and Lance but at the end of the day I always go back to my boom stick. :) I also have to point out that the gunlance is quite literaly a meme:
- would you like a melee weapon or a firearm
- YES
This was my first MH. Started with the charge blade 'cause it looked cool. Tried almost every other weapon, liked a number of them, but the charge blade rules supreme.
Dude same it was my first weapon and I tried using other weapons but it just didn't feel the same.
Fell in love with insect glaive after main dual blade and bow
Long sword main for life but I’m still watching 😂 I love hearing anything monster hunter👌🏻
I still remember when i blocked fatalis cone breath with my lance shield and my friend hide behind me and lived while im yelling the reinhardt quote “ I SHALL BE YOUR SHIELD”
I am a solo switch player and I’ve got to say, it is the ultimate experience of mhw, it’s so fun.
A weapon guide of MHW in 2024... crazy, but def appreciated
I have been wanting to try a different weapon but I have been using Hammer for so long that I am having a hard time switching to something new lol
If my love still holds when I lose the advantage of being in MR gear against HR monsters, we'll see, I don't quite know if I trust myself with it against something in MR yet XD
However, I might be a rare person who can come down with a final answer on if S&S or GS is the true OG, assuming what I know is accurate and there wasn't an earlier demo disk.
But what I can remember is the weapon you walk in carrying, and I'm fairly certain was the only one in the game: The greatsword.
i just started yesterday and i’ve been having a lot of fun with the insect glaive but i might have to check out hunting horn or heavy bowgun now, different ammo types or songs sound like they’d be really fun to adapt to for each enemy, also the longswords iai spirit slash looks like it’s so cathartic to pull off
Play them all, master them all. That being said charge blade
I like Hammer, Hunting Horn, and Sticky Ammo HBG I like telling the Wyverns "Happy birthday to the ground!"😈
the special thing that i find unique with the hammer is that its extremely fast for being a hammer type of weapon. Every other game, the hammer is usually the slowest weapon but not in monster hunter
My favorite video on this yet!
Lance is my favorite weapon by far. I wasn't really drawn to it in the beginning but when I tried it I fell in love haha. The dmg uptime on monster is insane and I love how rewarding it is to chain counter attack and offensive guard skill proc.
This is the 1st I heard good assesment on Dual blades. DB is my main weapon for speed runs back in MH4U and MHXX. SNS and IG are my 2nd main weapons.
I used to be a bow main but picked up the games again and switched to gunlance. I'm loving it. Thinking about challenging myself to beat monsters with every weapon type.
Whoaaaa i love that atelier ryza ost at the ending of the video.
Lance, ever since MH1 I’ve used Lance and never regretted single moment.
I remember playing the first 2 gen of monster hunters using greatsword, light bowgun and gunlance. Now im playing rise with longsword and dualblades.
As someone who has played since the beginning of mh I was originally a s&s main for the first few games then gradually shifted to the longsword, switch axe in tri and triu, and when the charge blade was introduced I instantly knew it was for me. And I never have and never will be a gunner
Can’t wait for Wilds where I’ll be able to swap between SnS & Bow on the fly mid-hunt
I've made a mistake by starting with Charge Blade and now I can't switch to any other weapon...
Insect glaive was my weapon, i like to be mobile and fast, however, switch axe is also very good for me. Such a special game
Amazing choice playing Luke's theme from street fighter 6🔥🔥🔥
Heavy biegun sticky only. Feels just right and comfy with the right setup.
17:22 demn i felt that.
Switch ax…I’m just rewatching this to confirm. Because GOD I FEEL LIKE A COMBO MANIAC WITH THE ELEMENTAL SHOOTY SHOOTY STUN BLASTING! WOOOOOOOOOO
Did I see u use the an layered armorset from the layered stream? Kulve x Demon
I'm a MH vet. And I've rarely used the switch AX and in rise it's truly the swag ax. It's so fluid and strong
The different weapons caters to different people and that what i love about this
I got the game recently and have pretty much only used the hunting horn it's just so much fun, might try charge blade or greatsword soon though
I'm a chargeblade main and I also play greatsword, bow, gunlance, and a little long sword
Oh Charge Blade, become my Blade once more (for Wilds) 😁
I play GS, LS, SdS, DB, Hammer, HH, SA, CB, IG and occasionally Lance, GL, Bow and the bow guns... yes, i have done MANY minerals runs for money 😊
Damn your fluid with every weapon
Dual blades main here! I agree with most of what you said, but with the exception of “easy to play.” Dual blades are fairly easy to pick up but I would say are some of the most difficult to master. Not quite longsword levels but close. The range is so short that you have to be ridiculously close and aggro and that just does not work for some creatures, especially in MR. Otherwise, you nailed it!
Honestly dual blades and hunting horns are my favorites the bow is always fun tho.
Fun fact, HH is the faster weapon after the seft - improvement melodie :)
I’ve loved cb ever since 4U’s demo, then each game after I’d play and never beat :) it just looks so cool
I only played hammer, loved the downhill spinning attack, but man i realy want to learn Lance!
Could be nice with blackveil Vaal Hazak selfhealing
Hammer was my first pick and is my most used weapon to this day
I mainly use SnS in mh1 and freedom, but starting from mhp3rd GS is the go. In mhw GS, CB and SA are so much fun to use
Switch Axe
Greatsword
Longsword
Those are my top 3 weapons
