My own personal "discover by accident" moment came with SnS the other day. After almost finishing the whole story on a fresh playthrough I finally learned that Perfect Rush was not a timing-based activation, but rather dependant upon you not releasing Circle (B) before pressing Triangle (Y). The first guide I saw said it was timing based (and the timing was a little wonky), and nothing I have ever watched since ever explicitly said how it was done. You can still go into Perfect Rush even after the sword glows red from backstep (before you automatically leap forward) so long as you're holding Circle/B while pressing Triangle/Y. Needless to say this has made activating PR much simpler.
I discovered something broken in how easy it is to pull off but when playing with mouse and keyboard I have a third binding which for some reason allows me to line up a perfect rush without the actual combination needed to do it on a controller which makes it as follows don’t rotate press mouse 4 till he moves into perfect rush setup. Then it’s mouse 1 timed and done. I still need to figure out how to do this properly on controller
You don't even need tk hold circle, if you just press triangle early in the backstep recovery, kr just mash triangle you'll get it every time, and you can do the timed hits normally after
Something for CB: Move which a lot of players don't use is a slinger burst after guarding. It's particularly strong when using things like flaspods(they automatically detonaty right in front of you)/red pods (collected from monsters). Guard/Guard point > slinger burst > Elemental Discharge 2. Reason why it's so good is because most monsters will flinch back and make roar-like animation right into your face. With good monster knowledge and positioning it's possible to unload good amount of elemental damage/stun buildup. Bonus when using Savage Axe for additional hits. And it's really good for stunlocking monsters when playing in coordinated groups. Your *put any weapon here* teammates will thank you greatly.
Okay, i'm new to MH, and I only play CB in solo. I didn't know this was a thing. I'm 190 hour deep, at Velkhana (I took my sweet time collecting every different CB at each stage). Knowing this would have saved me so many fights, like the tigrex, URGH. Thank you so much !
I’m so glad there’s a flurry of new content on MHW because of the hype from Wilds. I have about 500hrs in PlayStation but I decided start a new game in my steam deck. And these tips are giving me a new perspective of my favorite weapons.
As someone whose played far too much CB and learned it from scratch during MHW: It's far more valuable to learn how to properly use the sliding slash to reposition and getting comfortable with the optimal combos for filling your Phials with and without 3 Focus (charged slash + one basic with 3 Focus, charged slash into shield thrust into another charged slash for zero Focus) rather than worrying about trying to wrap your head around guard points if you're just starting out with the weapon.
@@LightItUpDan Dude that's just keep your R2 hold and press y when the hit come, not really hard and i prefer experiment against easy monster than harder ^^
a few more bonus tips for GL and SA: GL: during the animation of the forward dash attack you can spam shelling to cancel the attack itself into a shell. this has the advantage that shelling ignores monster hardness so it won't bounce and when you combo it into a reload into the slam you can enter a loop of attacks that ALL have mind's eye. SA: after the mounting finisher, while you drop down you can actually clutch claw onto the monster before you even hit the ground and go right into another ZSD. requires you to either get amped during the finisher (not every phial type can do that) or already be amped during it.
Lance: Problem A lot of lances moves can be used mid combo. However the normal block and the clutchclaw counter cant be. If you press the left trigger + cricle mid combo nothing will happen meaning if you want to use the clutchclaw counter, you have to stopp attacking for 1-2 sec and then use the counter, which is really akward, takes you out of the flow and cant be done against quick monster attacks if you dont stop attacking way before hand. Solution There is a way to use the clutchclaw counter quickly mid combo. The same way you can qucikly use a counter thrust mid combo and cancle it directly into a power guard (so hold block -> circle -> X) you can also cancle the counter thrust into the clutch claw counter by pressing the left trigger instead of the "X" Button. It will do a little animation where the hunter gets the claw out, but that is just for show, the instant you press the left trigger and your hunter starts the animation, any physicall attack of the monster will trigger the clutch claw counter. Making this a very fast and fluid way to use it. (note that CCC doesnt work as a counter against elemental attacks like fire balls)
Insect Glaive: Regarding the downward thrust and the resulting kinsect attack. This attack is called the kinsect drill and does much more damage with a slow, high damage kinsect. So if you’re skilled enough to collect your extracts with a slower kinsect, you can get a ton of damage out of it
I switched to slow kinsect last night , and it's a noticeable difference. Combine it with demondrug and a meat platter, I've never felt so powerful with insect glaive, it's awesome
Yeah, a neat tech, exponentially more damaging with a slow kinsect, but still not anything I’d build around honestly. Ground combos are the weapon’s big damage outputs
@@LightItUpDanif youre doing descending r1 tornado slash loops, the slow kinsect is an extra few hundred damage, especially on large hunts like safi and ishara. Its worth trying.
On behalf of the community, thank you for still making content for this game, i found this channel while looking for guides on how to beat alatreon and all i can say is it took me 24 hours and up to 50 tries but your vids definitely helped ❤
Only 24 hours? Only 50 tries? It took me a WEEK to beat the weaker one, and like 100 tries to beat it, I was gonna wait till Safi'jiiva came out since his armor is good for the Alatreon fight, But some really good player managed to solo a duo enhanced alatreon, Thanks Again who ever you were, and now I have beaten fatty 3 times and fully Upgraded My Fatalis GS (excluding augmentation), and got full fatalis Armor that is upgraded to the max(Also excluding Augmentation) Thanks Again A-Lister Who Saved Me From Years Of Trouble!
Another thing for the hammer: First of all after your Upswing or brutal Upswing you can also perform a clutch claw attack it is a bit weaker since you won't spin but still a great move and secondly while charging your hammer you can perform a slinger burst without using aour charge level letting you hit your brutal big bang easier if you have a ammo that can stagger the monster I also gotta talk about the best tech for the switch axe. While doing the wild swings you can perform a slinger burst which pushes you backwards so you can dodge with it. There is a variety of follow ups you can do afterwards but one of my favorites has to be the fade slash( by pressing back and Y) which positions you even further back and gives you a lot space between you and the monster. You can also perform a stationary slinger burst after performing a morph attack back into the axe mode.
That DB tip with the double circle into clutch claw is actually insane. Ty! Ive put over 800 hours into the game as an IG main and i did a bit of LBG and DB on the side. I got really used to the ability of being able to just drop onto the monster with the clutch claw with IG and missed that feature with DB. Sidenote for IG users, yes its tenderize isnt instant.. UNLESS. You hit circle and do a single claw swipe, in the same method as when you turn a monster when youre on its face to wallbang it. The single claw swipe and the follow up IG special move with tenderize the part and is overall faster than doing it twice. Also a big note for the R1 for aerial insect glaives spam. If you get used to having a slower kinsect, it will do more damage and hit harder as it drills slower through the monster, in the same way piercing ammo does. So High Power and Low speed Kinsects are your friend here! It will change how you gather essences a bit. You will have to be close to the monster and get your essences from the traditional targetting and take a bit longer due to your lil bugs reduced speed, OR. You make sure your kinsect is always fed and you R1 dive for two extracts. Different ways to play but tons of fun :)
Niche move with the charge blade is when you on a slide-able slope with your weapon drawn, you can y+b straight into a slide attack. Very useful on maps like the back end of the arena and hoarfrost reach, great for spamming mount attacks and dodging far and quickly.
Flourish is so nice to get more notes in to queue songs faster. Also gotta add that I saw in the vid he was holding a direction while attacking which led to Dan using more committal attacks as neutral left swing, right swing, and super pound will be faster than their forward counterparts. Also horners do not use forward recital if you’re not combining it after forward slam/super pound!
Favourite "advanced" tech for GS is hands down the slinger shot into TCS. I wish it was in Wilds as we still have the slinger. Also for SnS if your weapon is sheathed then just use block then backstep into PR. The block will pull out your weapon soooo much faster than a slash
Greatsword tip: A fast way to spam True Charge Slash that also loops in on itself is this combo: Roll>Tackle>Slap>Slinger>TCS. The combo can start at any point in the loop.
There was one little detail I found for Greatsword that also involves the Slinger Burst, but its for Wide Slash. I cant remember the exact details of it so I'll revisit it and edit this comment later, but Slinger Burst actually buffs one of the Wide Slash attacks. Normally the attack is just an uncharged swing, but doing SB then going into it should produce the familiar charged attack red glow to show it's been buffed up. Bonus GS Fun Fact that I know for fully certain: In Rise, if you're using GS and bring along a Palamute, your Palamute can also charge their attack while you charge any of your slashes (Charged, Strong, and/or True). I tried to replicate this with hammer, but the Palamute never charged its attack when I charged my own with Hammer. Dogs love big big swords, apparently.
Great video! One thing I’d like to say about the light bowgun’s whole dodge reload thing is that you can use other ammo types to continue reloading your main ones. Let me explain: I use the Stygian Zinogre lbg, which i like because it has rapid fire spread 2 and regular spread 3. Problem is, both of these have abysmal reload times and I really don’t want to use exclusively reload mods on it. Instead, I order my ammo so that my faster reloading types are right next to the spread ammo. This means that if I can’t use a dodge reload after emptying my spread ammo, instead of going into a normal reload, i do this: 1. swap to an ammo type adjacent to spread on the list and fire it 2. immediately switch back to spread and do a dodge reload if you’re quick enough, you can use this to get back any “missed” dodge reloads
Another thing for SnS is that you can back hop out of a guard. (Almost instantly) This unlocks the ability to draw your weapon into back hop, get a second way better doge, and truly spam perfect rush to and even greater degree. (This is also nice if you are running a FC SnS, because you have to put your weapon away often to recharge gage)
With SnS' triple strike(The mounting attack finisher), I learned recently that if you only press the input once, it only does the first strike before resetting. To make use of this, I time my inputs slowly so the monster stays in one place barely moving for longer before being toppled, giving my teammates even more damage uptime
Finally getting into MHW after all this time, and your videos have been absolutely integral to helping me fall in love with this game. The game is so obtuse in so many ways, so you have been pretty much necessary, and I thank you for what you're doing! Now to get back to lancing like a fiend!
Great stuff! One great thing with the hammer also is you can do the ledge hop attack swing from a slope as well. You just need to do a light attack while sliding and you'll do a short hop attack into a huge swing depending on your charge level.
DB slinger burst after blade dance also gives i frames GL after a quick reload lets you use the downward strike inmedeatly, being able to loop downward into wide slash SA after doing the shorter version of ZSD you can morph after landing to recover some switch gauge, also when you aim with your slinger it will perform a step dodge instead of a roll
Nice video, learned some new tricks (for GS and Bow in particular :)) and how to do inputs Some extra things not covered the video: -Sword and Shield can get into Perfect Rush by performing a slinger burst (aim your slinger while unsheathed, hit your lock camera button, fire) and then hitting your Leaping Slash input. Keep in mind this will cover a crazy amount of distance, considerably more than you do after a backhop, so make sure you have the distance to spare. Additionally, the backhop has a lot of invincibility frames, so learning to backhop effectively is very important! -Gunlance can reload the wyrmstake in several ways, one from a normal reload, second from the upthrust into a scaleable wall as explained, or third by loading your Wyrmstake Blast (which you should be doing anyway if you're playing a shelling style of GL). Additionally, you can fire your shells higher up by firing them after using the Rising Thrust move! You can do this by performing Rising Thrust, fire a shell, do a basic poke, and repeat shelling and poking until you're out of shells, at which point you can quick reload or slam your lance downwards for your heavier hits. -Charge Blade has another alternative team friendly Savage Axe combo: Dash Slam, Elemental Discharge 2, slinger burst, Elemental Discharge 2, slinger burst, etc. Note that this will keep you locked in a long attack animation for a lot of your uptime, and it cannot be used if you just performed a flinch shot (without Slinger Capacity, anyways), so knowing about the Dash Slam into Elemental Discharge 2 and repeat combo is still useful (I'll be taking it into mind) -Insect Glaive's Downward Thrust attack gets even better when you have a slower and stronger kinsect - I use the Vezirstag 3 Forz kinsect, swapped to whichever element my target is weakest to (Your kinsect does strong elemental damage, don't sleep on it!). The "drill" mentioned ticks based on how long the kinsect's hitbox overlaps with the monster's, so more time in there means more damage! Bonus pro tip: pick a glaive that has the "Spirit and Strength Boost" effect so that when you powercharge your kinsect (aim kinsect input + both attack buttons), you get the effects of both environmental and monster slinger ammo! -Bow can use scaleable walls to fire a spread of arrows towards the ground, similar to that of Power Shot. You get some decent airtime from this and can use it to simultaneously evade and punish a sweeping attack coming across the ground! You can also follow it up with Charging Sidestep right back into that wall (Requires Evade Extender - level unknown) for another burst. Situational, but if you score a topple in the right spot, you're in for some massive damage!
As a bowgun player, I've learned some tech that are pretty valuable: For LBG, if you fail to evade reload, you can switch to another ammo type, start another evade reload, then switch back to the ammo type you want to reload before the slide animation begins. You can also use wyvernblast to start an evade reload. For HBG, adjusting the special scope zoom changes the supercritical range, which may differ depending on the ammo, situation, playstyle, etc. You don't have to aim down the scope all the time; you can opt to release your aim after every shot so that you can see the surroundings better.
One for Bow: start your combos with the wide shot instead of the straight shot because it doesn't use up any stamina, but the downside is that it has very little range compared to all the other shots. So it is niche because when playing Bow you generally never want to be THAT close to anything since most monsters can just sneeze on you and kill you, but it *is* free damage considering it costs none of your valuable stamina.
Recently after 200h with CB I realized that the long combo of super amped element discharge {SAED} can be shortened. when the shield is charged, instead of starting in sword mode and doing: [charge/ sword charged double slash/ sword shield thrust/ SAED] It's both faster and safer to start in axe mode, because then with the shield charged you instead only do: [SAED] And whilst you still have the shield charged, you can just loop the combo: [sword charged rising slash/ sword charged rising slash/ charge philes/ sword morphed slash/ SAED], since the element discharge returns you back into sword mode. Making the 8 input combo loop turn into a 5 input combo loop instead, the best part being after the first 4 inputs you can reorient yourself and wait for the right opportunity, to release the super amped element discharge with just 1 last input instead of 4 inputs, and then afterwards just start the loop again. I'm probably not playing the game optimally, I'm just having fun and learning new things as I go. however as explained in the video I didn't know that you could make yourself slide on purpose, always seemed like a slope was necessary, but I probably just did it accidentally.
SnS: Guarding with your weapon unsheathed lets you do the backhop without the use of a combo, meaning you can dodge anything with ease, since the backhop has a large window. (R + immediately back + O) For better effect, turn away from the attack before blocking, so you jump through the incoming attack. Also, unsheathing by guarding + rolling immediately makes the claw uppercut move basically usable from anywhere, without having to use your unsheathe attack.
Accidantially discovered after playing IG for hundreds of hours: You can attach yourself to the climbing walls wenn dashing mid air, climb higher or lower and dash from the wall into new arial attacks... It took me some time, but i managed to integrate it in fights in the right spots. Someone else noticed this trick?
Hey you missed aiming your WyvernsFire with Holding L2 for Gunlance, it’s a game changer. And if you need to make a big adjustment, just move your camera and TAP L2. You can easily redirect yourself away from teammates by doing so, or you can hit a monster if it moves away. Hope this helps and GLancers
Oh neat! I don’t see many people using Wyvern Fire, it’s a very slow attack with relatively low damage for the wind up, but maybe this would make it more worthwhile
Okay, I want to mention something for dualblades. The clutch claw attack after the dashing strike, that's not the only way way do it. If you're like me, a diehard dash juice addict, you probably don't like being forced to throw that first lunge out due to sometimes putting yourself out of position for the actual claw strike if you're looking to soften a specific part, or are just fighting something small where you might overshoot and waste your soften opportunity. Enter demon mode, dodge, swing once with a basic attack, then you'll be allowed to do the double upward swings -> claw attack via the dash attack imputs without needing to do the giant lunge that normally starts it. Does this matter at all? No. But I've seen people do it and had to mess around for a long time to figure it out, so now everyone else gets free info too.
Diehard dash juice addict here. Just saying cuz I feel like most of this info is getting disregarded because people consider DB to be a just-spam-dance weapon. There's actually a cool third way to do the tenderize combo, especially useful when facin a monster for the first time and you dont know the openings. You can do the infinite triangle combo (Triangle -> triangle -> Triangle + side move key -> Triangle......) into tenderize, you ll notice the same attack you do after the dash you mention (hook, i think it is called), and then you can double circle and clutch onto the monster the same way. It is pretty useless for the big majority of DB users but when you put the hours onto the weapons is nice to have this versatility, figured out you might like the info ^^
I was maining the longsword because of it's ease of use, while also dabbling in the hammer and charge blade depending on what was needed, but this video is what'll get me to start trying out other weapons like the great sword, SnS, duel blades, and even the bagpipes
I like these tips and feel like it will take my game to the next level. I would have loved it if you showed the button prompts on screen, though... it gets a little muddy between combos, making it hard to follow at times.
That's awesome to hear and I can appreciate that! This was a deliberate choice for the aesthetic of the video, one that I'm very satisfied with. Should you require the button prompts on screen, I can confidently say that this is too advanced for you at this stage. That said, I do verbally provide the button inputs for a bunch of the techniques, although not all of them
@LightItUpDan okay, thanks for the response. You could do a step by step slo mo keeping the visuals in mind. I like it when veterans show button keys because It's easier to process the steps. Like I didn't know to charge the great sword before the swing_ tackle_ jump swing.
I didn't know the hammer tip about walking rather than rolling off ledges. Might be useful for Fatalis when the bugger won't move away. Not really a hammer user but I can use it. Also was not aware that Lance's Power Guard was omnidirectional. I've done something to this effect against Kulve Taroth on CB. Guarding in the fire pools (with Guard Up) will push you back for as long as you're still in the fire, unless you have Guard 9 equivalent (Guard 5 armor skills + Shield Charge + Guardpoints after every guard reaction). Side note: spamming guard points does some pretty good damage and REALLY good KO build up so, while it's not recommended you actively do this, it's definitely convenient when the stars align. Speaking of situational stuff, the Gunlance wall climb thing is also new to me. I wish every weapon had some sort of wall interaction. Most of them do, but not all. In fairness to the devs though, what would Greatsword even do off the wall? Loved the video. Hope we'll get another when Wilds comes around
For the ledge cheese, I've been doing that with LS and GS Longsword, you need at least one spirit, or it won't change your direction in air And greatsword is just funny to keep hitting air attacks
Man I really gotta try out world someday. The insect glaive looks so different than rise's version and I think I'd still have lots of fun with it. Someday I also wanna try learning the bow. Maybe I'll do that in wilds
Additional tip for Hunting Horn: You can roll out early from the Performance animation. When the buff procs, your character will flash briefly, at that point you can evade. Helps saving time and allows you to reposition. This also works on Encores.
For LS, there is a window where you can foresight after your helmbreaker for when there is an attack you don't have time to iai spirit slash. Also, the best way to get to white spirit (beside foresight) in the beginning of the fight is Y Y YB then spirit slashes all the way.
About the Sword and shield roll in to clutch, the clutch it self does 50 softening, 2 of those itself can soften a part, giving you even more option. Me as a bow main was crying when I know this 😂 BTW Dan, you may want to look up what exponential actually means (it is not exactly a synonym of a lot)
On switch axe: to cancel ZSD pull back on your stick. You can spam triangle but when "pulling back" with the left stick you end ZSD for fast recovery. Morph sweep is a staple but a more Interesting is fast access to overhead smash. Do wild swing once press triangle for a very fast punish.
Switch axe users should also learn to use the fade slash which can get them some distance after closing in on a monster for damage. Pretty sure you perform a side slash while holding backward on the left stick.
New(ish) to LS so probably not all that advanced, but you can also Sheath after landing the Longsword's Spirit Roundslash to immediately hit an Iai Slash. Do a Fade Slash, and then with the Iai's gauge buildup you should have enough to do another Spirit combo right after. Makes it really easy to build meter quickly, AND reduce downtime to keep dealing damage. Also, while the Gauge is building from Iai, you can delay the input of a Spirit Roundslash slightly. If you don't have enough meter to finish right away, you might soon after.
@@LightItUpDan No boot is right. You press it once and it cycles through every song. the only things that you can do to stop yourself from using all your stored songs is dodge or encore. Source - I am literally in the training area double checking to make sure as i type this.
12:55 thank you for this i never knew how to so i always ended my combo for chainsaw mode early because i wanted dps and didnt want to launch teammates
Not really much of a “tech”, but with insect glaive, you can get easy monster mounts (with it being an aerial weapon), but even easier monster mounts so long as you have all essences at once. Do the primary attack (I play mnk so left click) to do a spinning slash downwards. More downward attacks from the spinning slash = more chance to mount and knock down monster.
The one about sword and shield being able to reposition a perfect rush seems to work better if you roll towards where the camera is facing and then moving to left stick in the direction you want to do the perfect rush
For Gunlance you can cancel most melee moves into the wyrmstake Blast (slinger + shell buttons) which has a guardpoint for attacks that you think you wont be able to hop out the way of.
As a Hammer enjoyer, I wanna add something. Hammer: Nah, ain't got nothing. Just kiddin'...Ahaha. Just bonk the head, yea... (I LIED, I GOT SUMTHIN'. U guys just try using Hammer to fight Velkhana. She's spamming the ice breath? No problemo. Turn the table around. Use the lingering ice frost. FIGHT HER BACK WITH CHARGED SLIDING ATTACK. Muahahaha.)
Speaking about Hunting Horn, you didn't speak about how the number of notes in your melody affects the number of hits during the second activation combo (not sure about the first activation) It can be pretty sad if your trying to dodge with directional activations but your melody doesn't allow it
2:38 Min.: The First Long Sword found i out some days ago by a worlds rerun. The second know i not. Thanks for that. And the last use i ALL the time. With out it i couldnt life xD
5:38 Min.: Isnt that base knowlegde because befor World you ONLY could do this if you be charged ^^ And no if you have moved while release charge you maked the bayblade move that got removed in world ^^ And replaced by the newer better version ^^ The old version kills you sharpness so far i know to fast ^^
My problem is , as a new player , I enjoy the hardest weapons in the game lol . I like the bow , CB , GL and the hunting horn . That ain't stopping me thou
I am surprised you didn't mention that you can use slinger ammo to enhance your kinsect with the IG. Every ammo type also hast different effects and barely anyone knows them all!
There are two different effects depending on environmental ammo or monster ammo - I didn’t think it was a good fit here personally! It’s included in the Insect Glaive guide I’ve done though
fun fact: I mained bow until I swapped to IG after 100 hours, and I never turned on damage numbers to charge the dragon piercer, I just always wanted to
For people still getting used to their weapons, not a tech tip, more like innate weapon passives: Switch axe's sword mode and hammer's tier 3 charged brutal big bang have 'true mind's eye' which guarantees your attacks will not bounce off ultra hard parts like uragaan's chin and rajang's enraged arms. Just mind the sharpness loss
perfect rush for raw, shieldbashes for stun, standard sword attacks for element. you will thank me later sns players as this makes alatreon much muuuuch more doable.
Hello monster hunter community, I have a question that I need to ask. So basically I just defeated velkhana and I want to grind his armour set, but instead of having a full ‘a’ set (alpha) or a full ‘b’ set (beta) I want to have the ‘b’ set helmet with the rest of the armour being from the ‘a’ set. The question I need to ask is will I still get the full set bonus skill even if it’s a mixture between a and b set. I think it should still give me the set skill because its still velkhana armour, just want to make sure tho
Deliberate choice, I wanted a cleaner aesthetic. I talk through the controls and show the attacks, providing the button inputs verbally for most of them too. Beyond that, this is advanced techs & tips! If one still needs the controls after all the aforementioned, this video isn’t for them
No worries, this isn't the video for players starting out, come back to it later! I've done LOTS of very useful event round ups and weapon guides/overviews that will be a huge help to you
i know it's advanced but it would be very helpful if you include in the video the keys for the combo/moveset for new players to understand more. but its good video nevertheless
This was deliberate choice on my part for the visual aesthetic of the video. As you’ve said yourself, these are advanced tips! If a player needs the moves broken down further than the dialogue cues given (often with the actual button inputs) then it’s too advanced for them
who cares about damage numbers? the weapons all handle the same. This video is for intermediate to advanced players, but even so, no beginner is going to be confused when they aren’t hitting a great jagras for 1.5k
My own personal "discover by accident" moment came with SnS the other day. Needless to say this has made activating PR much simpler.
It's also good for delaying ur PR to some opening u found on a monster. Pretty useful if I say so myself
I see a lot of people struggle with this, must be something missing from the game’s explanation for it
@@LightItUpDan might have been a missing input when charging up ur attack into PR. Could've been like GS's "charge to tackle" input

Something for CB:
Move which a lot of players don't use is a slinger burst after guarding.

It's far more valuable to learn how to properly use the sliding slash to reposition and getting comfortable with the optimal combos for filling your Phials with and without 3 Focus (charged slash + one basic with 3 Focus, charged slash into shield thrust into another charged slash for zero Focus) rather than worrying about trying to wrap your head around guard points if you're just starting out with the weapon.
Sooo many people push guard points immediately onto new players, and I’m there like HUH
It's like trying to tell someone to parry before learning how to block and dodge in souls, playing meta doesn't help when you don't know the basics
@@LightItUpDan Dude that's just keep your R2 hold and press y when the hit come, not really hard and i prefer experiment against easy monster than harder ^^
@@initiumnovum4552 you're who they're talking about lol
@@LightItUpDan I just think you overestimate the difficulty of the game xD
a few more bonus tips for GL and SA:
GL: during the animation of the forward dash attack you can spam shelling to cancel the attack itself into a shell. this has the advantage that shelling ignores monster hardness so it won't bounce and when you combo it into a reload into the slam you can enter a loop of attacks that ALL have mind's eye.
SA: after the mounting finisher, while you drop down you can actually clutch claw onto the monster before you even hit the ground and go right into another ZSD. requires you to either get amped during the finisher (not every phial type can do that) or already be amped during it.
Nice! I'll have to try the SwAxe one in particular, very cool
Lance:
Problem
A lot of lances moves can be used mid combo.
Solution
There is a way to use the clutchclaw counter quickly mid combo.
Daaamn the big brain Lance plays continue!
Bro thank you, that's why I'm surprised how the hell did i manage to clutchclaw counter accidentally. 😮
Insect Glaive:
Regarding the downward thrust and the resulting kinsect attack.
@@LightItUpDan idk the speedrunning community would disagree
@@Matthewbyrd86 speedrunning isn't playing the game under normal parameters, and mostly requires a perfect set of circumstances to play out lol
On behalf of the community, thank you for still making content for this game, i found this channel while looking for guides on how to beat alatreon and all i can say is it took me 24 hours and up to 50 tries but your vids definitely helped ❤
Wonderful to hear, you’re very welcome! I’m so glad
Another thing for the hammer: First of all after your Upswing or brutal Upswing you can also perform a clutch claw attack it is a bit weaker since you won't spin but still a great move and secondly while charging your hammer you can perform a slinger burst without using aour charge level letting you hit your brutal big bang easier if you have a ammo that can stagger the monster
I also gotta talk about the best tech for the switch axe.
Yesss these are all dope!
Not only that, it’s the DBs strongest attack! Very powerful swings
Niche move with the charge blade is when you on a slide-able slope with your weapon drawn, you can y+b straight into a slide attack. Very useful on maps like the back end of the arena and hoarfrost reach, great for spamming mount attacks and dodging far and quickly.
Yeah really useful for traversal!
Tip for the Hunting Horn: You can input a second note during the animation of the 2nd hit of the flourish (forward + O).
Yes! Good to sneak another note out if needed
@@ppbun12 let’s leave all the different attacks etc. in the HH guide video haha, this weapon requires a whole god damn dissertation 😂
@@LightItUpDanfair, I think the main takeaway is just that hh is a very directionally sensitive weapon, love your vids btw
@@ppbun12 well said, it REALLY is! appreciate you mate, very kind of you to say
Favourite "advanced" tech for GS is hands down the slinger shot into TCS. I wish it was in Wilds as we still have the slinger. Also for SnS if your weapon is sheathed then just use block then backstep into PR. The block will pull out your weapon soooo much faster than a slash
Yeah the block into backstep can be SEAMLESS when done properly, so crazy
Greatsword tip: A fast way to spam True Charge Slash that also loops in on itself is this combo: Roll>Tackle>Slap>Slinger>TCS. The combo can start at any point in the loop.
Slap skip is really nice yeah
Let me explain:
I use the Stygian Zinogre lbg, which i like because it has rapid fire spread 2 and regular spread 3. Problem is, both of these have abysmal reload times and I really don’t want to use exclusively reload mods on it. Instead, I order my ammo so that my faster reloading types are right next to the spread ammo. This means that if I can’t use a dodge reload after emptying my spread ammo, instead of going into a normal reload, i do this:
1. swap to an ammo type adjacent to spread on the list and fire it
2. immediately switch back to spread and do a dodge reload
if you’re quick enough, you can use this to get back any “missed” dodge reloads
Another thing for SnS is that you can back hop out of a guard. (Almost instantly)
This unlocks the ability to draw your weapon into back hop, get a second way better doge, and truly spam perfect rush to and even greater degree.
(This is also nice if you are running a FC SnS, because you have to put your weapon away often to recharge gage)
Yeah that's a solid SnS tech!
With SnS' triple strike(The mounting attack finisher), I learned recently that if you only press the input once, it only does the first strike before resetting. To make use of this, I time my inputs slowly so the monster stays in one place barely moving for longer before being toppled, giving my teammates even more damage uptime
Yeah that’s an interesting one, feels a bit cheesy to me though haha
@@LightItUpDan I guess so. Still, it makes my greatsword buddy a very happy man
Finally getting into MHW after all this time, and your videos have been absolutely integral to helping me fall in love with this game. The game is so obtuse in so many ways, so you have been pretty much necessary, and I thank you for what you're doing! Now to get back to lancing like a fiend!
Welcome to MHW! I’m so glad they’ve helped, that’s wonderful to hear mate. Let’s go, get your stab on!
Advanced tech for Hammer: get more stronk, make more bonk. But seriously, great tips, Dan! Thanks for sharing!
The ULTIMATE Hammer tech! Appreciate you as always!
8:50 thank you ive recently been playing iceborne again with lance and ive seen people do this trick but didnt know how
🫡
I was looking around everywhere how to do AED with your shield charged, and you've provided me with an answer, thank you❤️
Hell yeah, I'm so glad!
Great stuff! One great thing with the hammer also is you can do the ledge hop attack swing from a slope as well. You just need to do a light attack while sliding and you'll do a short hop attack into a huge swing depending on your charge level.
Yeah that’s awesome to have in your belt too!
You can just charge and then press the dodge button to jump and do the ledge hop.
DB slinger burst after blade dance also gives i frames
GL after a quick reload lets you use the downward strike inmedeatly, being able to loop downward into wide slash
SA after doing the shorter version of ZSD you can morph after landing to recover some switch gauge, also when you aim with your slinger it will perform a step dodge instead of a roll
🫡
Nice video, learned some new tricks (for GS and Bow in particular :)) and how to do inputs
Some extra things not covered the video:
-Sword and Shield can get into Perfect Rush by performing a slinger burst (aim your slinger while unsheathed, hit your lock camera button, fire) and then hitting your Leaping Slash input.
Note that this will keep you locked in a long attack animation for a lot of your uptime, and it cannot be used if you just performed a flinch shot (without Slinger Capacity, anyways), so knowing about the Dash Slam into Elemental Discharge 2 and repeat combo is still useful (I'll be taking it into mind)
-Insect Glaive's Downward Thrust attack gets even better when you have a slower and stronger kinsect - I use the Vezirstag 3 Forz kinsect, swapped to whichever element my target is weakest to (Your kinsect does strong elemental damage, don't sleep on it!).
Cheers, glad you enjoyed it!
As a bowgun player, I've learned some tech that are pretty valuable:
For LBG, if you fail to evade reload, you can switch to another ammo type, start another evade reload, then switch back to the ammo type you want to reload before the slide animation begins.
Good techs!
Nice!
Recently after 200h with CB I realized that the long combo of super amped element discharge {SAED} can be shortened.
when the shield is charged, instead of starting in sword mode and doing: [charge/ sword charged double slash/ sword shield thrust/ SAED]
It's both faster and safer to start in axe mode, because then with the shield charged you instead only do: [SAED]
And whilst you still have the shield charged, you can just loop the combo: [sword charged rising slash/ sword charged rising slash/ charge philes/ sword morphed slash/ SAED], since the element discharge returns you back into sword mode.
The HH double swing you can input another note during the swing animation.
Yep!
SnS:
Guarding with your weapon unsheathed lets you do the backhop without the use of a combo, meaning you can dodge anything with ease, since the backhop has a large window.
(R + immediately back + O)
For better effect, turn away from the attack before blocking, so you jump through the incoming attack.
Also, unsheathing by guarding + rolling immediately makes the claw uppercut move basically usable from anywhere, without having to use your unsheathe attack.
Accidantially discovered after playing IG for hundreds of hours:
You can attach yourself to the climbing walls wenn dashing mid air, climb higher or lower and dash from the wall into new arial attacks...
It took me some time, but i managed to integrate it in fights in the right spots.
Someone else noticed this trick?
Oh dope haha
Oh neat, I didn’t know about that shortcut, I’ll try it out
Diehard dash juice addict here.
Hell yeah, enjoy exploring more weapons! It’s such a blast
Amazing to experience the resurgence of MHW because of the hype for Wilds. We’re getting content even now.
Hell yeah! I've been making stuff since January, it's been dope seeing this
I didn't know the hammer tip about walking rather than rolling off ledges.
I’m so glad! Absolutely, just need to discover them first haha
For the ledge cheese, I've been doing that with LS and GS
Longsword, you need at least one spirit, or it won't change your direction in air
And greatsword is just funny to keep hitting air attacks
Man I really gotta try out world someday. The insect glaive looks so different than rise's version and I think I'd still have lots of fun with it. Someday I also wanna try learning the bow. Maybe I'll do that in wilds
You REALLY should play World!
Additional tip for Hunting Horn: You can roll out early from the Performance animation. When the buff procs, your character will flash briefly, at that point you can evade. Helps saving time and allows you to reposition. This also works on Encores.
Nice!
Me as a bow main was crying when I know this 😂
BTW Dan, you may want to look up what exponential actually means (it is not exactly a synonym of a lot)
I know what exponentially means
@@LightItUpDan you’re not gonna stop aren’t you
I beat my entire first playthrough with greatsword without knowing slinger bursts were even a thing
On switch axe: to cancel ZSD pull back on your stick. You can spam triangle but when "pulling back" with the left stick you end ZSD for fast recovery.
Morph sweep is a staple but a more Interesting is fast access to overhead smash.
Do wild swing once press triangle for a very fast punish.
for sure, for sure!
Switch axe users should also learn to use the fade slash which can get them some distance after closing in on a monster for damage. Pretty sure you perform a side slash while holding backward on the left stick.
The switch axe ran so the charge blade could sprint at you on all fours
Yeah a very useful move!
That's right!
Over 700 hours in the game and there was still a lot on this video I didn’t know and will be trying out ASAP. Very helpful!
That’s awesome, I’m so glad it was!
You do not have to hold right trigger to perform stored melodies on horn, they just autoplay from the top down.
Edit: you’re right!
@@LightItUpDan because that’s not how horn has ever worked for me on pc or ps4

Another GL tech is when you load your slinger ammo into the wormstake, you can instantly jam that into the monster hitting B + Y
Very cool!

12:55 thank you for this i never knew how to so i always ended my combo for chainsaw mode early because i wanted dps and didnt want to launch teammates
You're very welcome!
Yes absolutely!
The one about sword and shield being able to reposition a perfect rush seems to work better if you roll towards where the camera is facing and then moving to left stick in the direction you want to do the perfect rush
It’s really tough to intentionally do, gotta delay the back step to right at the end of the roll to switch the direction
@@LightItUpDan Yeah I understand that, took me a minute to get the hang of it.
For Gunlance you can cancel most melee moves into the wyrmstake Blast (slinger + shell buttons) which has a guardpoint for attacks that you think you wont be able to hop out the way of.
Very cool, will have to try it
Only if you have slinger ammo and another WSB not yet loaded
As a hh main the only hunting horn tip i didn't know was the first one. Still haven't gotten thr hang of the hilt jab myself
Glad I could teach you something!
As a Hammer enjoyer, I wanna add something.
Hammer:
Nah, ain't got nothing.
Muahahaha.)
BOOOONK
Another tip for LBG is if u have dodge reload(DR) on and missed your chance to DR u can put a mine on the ground then immediately go into a DR
Good in a pinch!
You can press space (Jump) to actually end the zsd for switch axe, you don't have to stop tapping the attack button.
Yep, or hold back on the left stick with controller (if that's the same thing as the KB input)
Speaking about Hunting Horn, you didn't speak about how the number of notes in your melody affects the number of hits during the second activation combo (not sure about the first activation)
It can be pretty sad if your trying to dodge with directional activations but your melody doesn't allow it
yep!

Oh nice!
Monster hunter wilds got us on mhw like dude we need it now we all brushing up on skill and such
fun fact: I mained bow until I swapped to IG after 100 hours, and I never turned on damage numbers to charge the dragon piercer, I just always wanted to
😲
For people still getting used to their weapons, not a tech tip, more like innate weapon passives:
Switch axe's sword mode and hammer's tier 3 charged brutal big bang have 'true mind's eye' which guarantees your attacks will not bounce off ultra hard parts like uragaan's chin and rajang's enraged arms. Just mind the sharpness loss
Great to be mindful of!
500 hours of charge blade under my belt and today i found out you could still do AED even with charged shield. lol
Haha MH is the gift that keeps on giving
I wanted to see if i miss any hammer knowledge. I don't good to know
Your bonk is already stronk
perfect rush for raw, shieldbashes for stun, standard sword attacks for element. you will thank me later sns players as this makes alatreon much muuuuch more doable.
PR has increased elemental modifiers and still should be the primary choice for elemental where possible
The slower your kinsect is, the more hits it does with the kinsect drill attack after a pogo stick attack
Correct!

Yep, set skills go across different gear, provided it has the same set skill
@@LightItUpDan thanks a lot 👍
Showing the controls would've been nice :D
Deliberate choice, I wanted a cleaner aesthetic. I talk through the controls and show the attacks, providing the button inputs verbally for most of them too. Beyond that, this is advanced techs & tips! If one still needs the controls after all the aforementioned, this video isn’t for them
Im so noob at this game, but after the first 40hours im still in total hype :)

This was deliberate choice on my part for the visual aesthetic of the video. As you’ve said yourself, these are advanced tips! If a player needs the moves broken down further than the dialogue cues given (often with the actual button inputs) then it’s too advanced for them
Elemental damage doesn't charge.
The elemental damage modifier on the charged jumping slash goes up a lot, I’m not sure you know how it works properly
Can someone translate this for pc
I play PC with a controller lol. Look up the moves in hunter’s notes
I don’t know how this video might be helpful if you show the advanced techniques but not explain how to do it. -.-
Clearly it’s not for you then, as every single tech is fully explained. If you’re unable to follow, it’s too advanced for you
Guides like this really shoeldnt be done with fatalis weapons. Since it's basicly post game weapons. It kinda misguided with the dmg numbers
You're welcome to go make your own that follow any specific self-imposed rules, I'm very happy with mine
who cares about damage numbers? the weapons all handle the same. This video is for intermediate to advanced players, but even so, no beginner is going to be confused when they aren’t hitting a great jagras for 1.5k
@@snek8421 this is far too much rationality for OP
I hate the charge blade it is not fun too play with
