      I think it's really hard to design a turf war for him because the obvious question will be "Why doesn't he just divebomb everything?"
      This is probably why in the game itself, he does in fact just divebomb everything.

      @@HeavyWings Yeah, rather than give him any turf wars, they did the most reasonable thing given his kit (and especially given how extra insanely aggressive Crimson Glow is compared to a standard Valstrax in terms of ecology), and rather than give him turf wars, they gave him the Ambush.
      However, I don't think the ambush should be announced in the same way as a turf war, for obvious reasons. It's a shame that all the fun and surprise gets removed because of it.

    The Sunbreak turf wars being so much better at the cost of more turf wars is interesting. Cause yeah, Sunbreak Tuef Wars rule... but there's so many strange omissions.
    Rathalos had both of its rival flying wyverns in Seregios and Astalos added in Sunbreak and neither have a turf war with it. In fact, every returning flagship in Sunbreak only got 1 turf war. Seregios and Gore's single turf war was spent on each other, cool in that they're the MH4 flagships; but Gore has a historical bout with Tigrex while Steve has one with Rathalos, why not have those be their turf wars? Why put Shagaru out of the arena into a proper map and give it no turf wars?
    It was almost certainly a budget thing, we even know of a scrapped turf war between Malzeno and Garangolm because there was concept art of it. Hopefully with Wilds there's a better balance of unique turf wars without having so few.

    • @HeavyWings
      @HeavyWings  14 дней назад +20

      Sunbreak forgoing even the most low-effort recycling for say, Magnamalo vs Seregios/Astalos/Espinas means the devs probably took a lot of Iceborne's criticism to heart and only focused on purely unique turf wars, plus whatever they could recycle from Iceborne (Velkhana's and Rajang's turf wars come back).
      Shagaru Magala goes in open maps likely because they didn't want to recreate a whole arena for one monster, the Forlorn arena was already in the works as a general thing anyway. Besides, that one area of the Citadel kind of resembles it.
      And you're correct, there was 100% a Malzeno vs Garangolm turf war in the works, there's even neat looking Key Art of it happening, and the concept art being shown on Twitter was actually our first hint that Malzeno could teleport lol.
      Probably a budget and workflow thing, it's not a coincidence that Velkhana was a fairly simple port from Iceborne and that update added some of the best turf wars - they had more time to work on them.

    Some favourite nuances,
    -Malzeno is the only monster to have a completely different animation between its two forms for a turf war against the same monster, Velkhana.
    -Diablos vs Diablos is currently the only intraspecific (between the same species) turf war
    -Glavenus vs Rathalos is the only turf war where the winner completely swaps depending on which zone they fight in.
    -Rathalos loses the most turf wars at four animations. Right behind him is Paolumu and Velkhana, both at three.
    -Rajang is the only non-elder to explicitly defeat an elder dragon. Inversely, Amatsu is the only elder dragon to explicitly defeat an elder-level.

  • @carterlazarus813
    @carterlazarus813 14 дней назад +23

    Rathalos vs Glavenus isn't particularly interesting in animation; but there is a cool feature to it. If you're in a lower elevation of the Ancient Forest, Glavenus looses. It's just the Rath v Anja animation, but I believe its the only instance of a turf war where both opponents have a win con depending on circumstance.

    One thing I do appreciate about the Magnamalo/Elder Dragon turf war is the divebomb is not aimed at you anymore, now it's just aimed behind the non Magnamalo monster's starting position, the same position that they launch in the basic version if you're out of range. It just highlights Magnamalo's sheer dominance over the lesser monsters even better and makes the targeted dive bomb a lot cooler. The reframing does kinda showcase instead of Magnamalos domination over flying wyverns it almost frames it as a desperation to keep up with the elder dragons. It's a really cool reframing of a reused animation and the elder dragon empowering the dive bomb with their own power to beat Magnamalo showcases their durability as elder dragons over Magnamalo.
    I dunno I think it's a really cool turf war if you overthink it WAY too much

    You know I was pretty deep into Sunbreak before I even saw my first Turf War in Risebreak. I believe it was while farming for a Shagaru Magala set. Due to the Wyvern Riding mechanic triggering very quickly when monsters interact and hit each other causing the special stagger combined with the fact monsters run away shortly after, maybe they just decided it wasn't worth the cost. The way monsters move around the map also means I usually see less repeated interactions between them than in World on the same hunt, even if I am far more likely to see my primary target interact with all additional monsters far more. I wonder if that also fed into the lack of new turf wars in that game.
    Rise definitely had troubled development if we base that on how unfinished it launched. I almost wonder if they just never got around to it and decided that slipping them in after the fact would look worse. Alternatively it might have been added late in development as a feature in general. There's a lot of little signs from some of the Japanese discussion that Rise was a deck stacking gambit originally, if World flopped the more traditional Monster Hunter game in the form of Rise would come out and ensure everyone it was just an experiment. World didn't flop and actually did incredible and Rise had to rush to adapt to the insane popularity of the new gen 5 style of game leading to development troubles with the new more open maps and trying to implement more of those features into Rise. There's also some evidence the hardware of the Switch was a huge hinderance for them.
    I do think the response to reused turf wars was a bit overblown in Iceborne and mostly a symptom of the lack of new unique turf wars between the more significant and showy monsters and a general lack of turf wars for skeletons that would have had atypical win/loss pairings between each other than a symptom of the reuse. I think it is a far more glaring issue of when there's not a turf war between monsters and they just sort of roar at each other and do a few generic attacks before one of them leaves. Turf Wars being treated as special then making them more generic was far more damaging than if turf wars started generic and the unique ones were special. Having more generic turf wars for all three possible outcomes (win, loss, and tie) between every skeleton pairing as a fall back would help with this. There should still be a effort made to make sure monsters that are highly likely to interact or who have special ecology should have special turf wars and monsters who do use the generic ones should be tuned to trigger far less often to help hide when the fall back is needed. For the average player it won't be that big of an issue as you just won't see every turf war pairing in a casual playthrough and even unique turf wars get tuned out after enough hours. The unique ones would still stick out if plentiful enough and showy enough meaning the generic ones wouldn't stick out as much lessening the issue. People remember the unusual cases more than the generic cases, and it was unusual how many reuses Iceborne suffered from making them stick out and be more easily remembered.
    It would also ensure there wouldn't be glaringly silly situations like "Pukei-Pukei didn't have a Turf War until Rajang got added". This also makes future games have more time to focus on unique turf wars and allow for the changing of turf wars to be replaced with unique ones in future entries if the monsters start interacting more frequently. I think a policy of "At least one unique turf war per monster" policy would help. Even if that just meant that you ended up with a few monsters known for having a lot of unique turf wars with others in their area. Would it be that bad if Anjanath was known for having a unique turf war with Great Jagras, Pukei-Pukei, and Rathalos? No, it'd just cement him as being an aggressive and belligerent monster like Odogaron. Would it be that bad if Dodogama was known for only having a unique turf war Uragaan? Not really, Dodogama and Uragaan compete for the same minerals as food. Uragaan would likely end up with the surplus of unique Turf Wars in the Elder's Recess anyways, it moves around a lot so it interacts with other monsters a lot giving it a feel of being a monster that is just constantly getting bullied as it tries to find food. Then you bump into a generic one between Uragaan and Azure Rathalos and it might as well be unique due to how unlikely it is to realize it was a generic reuse that would also happen if Radobaan and Legiana somehow met, something that can only happen with areas like the Guiding Lands.
    Literally before I hit send on this I realized something. If there was such a system to ensure no pairings we lacking turf wars you could actually then add an extra layer to hunter knowledge being used in game play. Luring monsters into unique or generic turf wars you know your target will lose.

    is so out of place when it does this whole thing '
    me and my friends literally joked
    if magna would have a turfwar with diablos Diablos would also suddenly think it has to fly
    but back to magna vs Barioth
    i would loved if its more unique
    as if barioth trys to hit magna with an icebreath but misses hits the ground with it and creates such an tornado
    both barioth and magna get sucked in
    barioth used to it takes advantage then magna gets flugn to the groudn and barioth literally "dives" into magna
    if the fans still want the magna to win let him blast barioth in the end with hellfire
    generally i never was a fan of the thign as its for me jsut ? op ? in turfwars for no reason
    you have bazelgeuse who can go toe to toe with an deviljho who can go toe to toe with elders
    and magna throws it aroudn as whatever

      yeah it does but as an pseudo wyvern its flying style is a lot diffrent and how it used it
      it was also seen with giginox in tri/tri u when it was flying ( mostly when changing locals)
      but generally the magnamalo turfwars ( not all) are jsut boring
      as the flying mosnters is doing the same thing over and over again
      instead of giving everyone an quite unique one
      i loved in the MH movie ( no not the bad one XD)
      the scene where Congalala stood its ground agaisnt deviljho
      it looked epic af ,,, and its jsut a Congalala
      why cant then agnosome ,tobi or kulu also do some fancy shit
      when an Congalala can hold his own agaisnt a deviljho for some time
      then an Kulu can def keep up with an Rath

    I wanna share some of my thoughts on turf wars, and what I believe could be a good way to improve them.
    Firstly, I believe there are two types of turf wars: Ecology turf wars and Gamebreaking turf wars. Ecology turf wars main purpose is to give monsters personality, as well as showing us how they handle other monsters. It makes monsters feel like living animals, rather than just bosses in a videogame, and this a enjoy. Some examples of this would be: Anjanath's turf wars with Great Jagras and Rathalos; Diablos fighting each other, tetranadon's turf wars with the bears, Tiziti trying to blind a Odogaron, and so on.
    Gamebreaking turf wars show how strong a monster is, intentionally or not. These turf wars aren't really good (imo), mainly because they seem quite pointless, and are more designed to do a lot of damage to the losing monster, with no sense of realism or struggle. Deviljho is one of these turf wars, but he gets a pass because he's designed to be an above-average monster. I'd also say Rajang falls into this category, but his fights with elders are questionable. Magnamalo's turf wars, on the other hand, are purely for damage and no ecology. All of his fights are one sided (besides Mal and Vel), and it only shows how cool and powerful Magna is, not to mention how unnatural he is as well, even by elder standards.
    I think the first thing to do to turf wars is keeping them realistic (looks at Magna and Akno turf war), as well as making it a struggle for both monsters, excluding a few. Some other things I'd like to see would be more variety, better animations, more same species turf wars, maybe even something like mini turf wars( Monsters would use unique attacks dealing smaller amounts of damage on other monsters consistently rather than one big fight dealing a lot of damage).

    one of my favorites is lunagaron vs zinogre all because of the stare down and how similar yet different these monsters are. Personally one of my least favorites is magnamalo vs flying wyverns/teostra and kushala. I don't like it because... physics. There's no way any of these monsters except maybe the elder would still be able to fly while magnamalo is grabbed on to them in the air. Like it looks so silly to see aknosom still in flight while this monster 3 times as big as it is grabbed on to him.

    • @HeavyWings
      @HeavyWings  14 дней назад +1

      MH kind of plays fast and loose with flight, because realistically there's no way half of these things would be able to fly with their wingspans, Malzeno being a prime culprit. Aknosom is probably the silliest in context of the turf war but none of the others stick out to me.

    • @HeavyWings
      @HeavyWings  14 дней назад

      Not an error, it uses the exact same animations. I should have made that more clear though, it's just that during editing I realised my Jho vs Legiana footage was way better that of Jho vs Rathalos. Throughout the video there's a couple of occasions where I use Sunbreak footage when talking about an Iceborne turf war, it's for the same reason.

    I actually think that garangolm and lunagaron’s turf war is actually kinda mid, lunagron is supposed to be this fast and that whats get the upper hand on garangolm. But in the sequence Garanglom literally gets a hold of luna and just slams him into the floor dealing no damage.
    I also will say While Im not his biggest fan I can understand that magnamalos turf wars are spectacles, I will say his only good flying wyvern/ bird wyvern turf war is with rathalos. As him being on-top of aknasome looks incredibly goofy and honestly makes Aknasome look like the winner as it’s this small bird wyvern thats flying while this large fanged wyvern is on it. And im sorry but bazelgeuse shouldn’t be losing at least to base magnamalo, people will always say that magnamalo wins because it his the explosion resistant armour but they completely forgot that bazelgeuse literally has the same, Also if thats the case then teostra would also lose to him in an instant. I really wanted to have a battle of two volatile monsters blow up but instead bazelgeuse’s own adaptations are completely dismissed to make maganmalo cooler which leaves a real bitter taste in my mouth. In fact after seeing primordial melzeno I actually wouldn’t mind base magnamalo tie with bazel and scorned getting the upper hand over bazelgeuse that to me is better.

    • @HeavyWings
      @HeavyWings  14 дней назад

      Lunagaron grabs onto Garangolm with his jaw and they roll around with Lunagaron ending underneath, it's not necessarily a slam.
      Keep in mind Bazel doesn't lose because of Magnamalo's hellfire explosions, he loses because Magnamalo slams him into the ground, and his bombs wouldn't be able to hurt him much compared to Jho and Rajang.

    • @Ze-splattingmain
      @Ze-splattingmain 14 дней назад

      @ I suppose I do see where you’re coming from with lunagaron and garangolm. But to me that didn’t look very soft in the slightest when garangolm pinned Luna to the ground with a single fist. And monsters in turf wars have been damaged by far less.
      I do politely agree to disagree with magnamalo however. Even if you sum up the outcome as magnamalo slamming bazel to the ground which I definitely get, magnamalo still has volatile gas coming out of his body which means while he’s skin is safe but his insides aren’t. Much like when you hit is his glowing part in his fight. This why I think it should be a tie over a line way slant. Also once again I if that is the case I don’t think teosta would stand a chance against magnamalo and yet he gets to do a blast at the end of his turf war with him.

    Rise/Sunbreak turf war is the best in my opinion. In exchange of fewer turf war, each turf war that we got feel more unique and show each monster speciality more. Some of my favorite is turf war involving both Malzeno coz it show each Malzeno different speciality and "turf war" between Apex Zinogre and Amatsu coz of my nostalgia. I hope for Wilds we also got something similiar, turf war that show each monster speciality and even better if we can get more turf war than Rise/Sunbreak.

  • @Spike2276
    @Spike2276 14 дней назад

    My favorite turf war has to be Magnamalo vs Aknosom. Not because it has a cool animation, since it's just a copy paste of Malo's other Flying Wyvern turf wars. And not because of a deep lore rivalry, since there isn't any.
    No, my only reason for that being my favorite is that Aknosom's starter difficulty ass only gets one turf war in the whole game and it's against an Elder level monster. He just wakes up and chooses violence when he sees the weeb tiger even if he knows he doesn't have a chance.

  • @rahnal21

    Let me try to re-invent each turf war from Mid C to F, plus a few others that could be better (I won’t be doing this for the copy-pastes not repented by the symbols)
    Jho vs Odo
    Odo dodges Jho’s initial strike and jumps into his back trying to claw him and stuff but is quickly grabbed and yanked by his tail, Jho proceed to use him as a weapon like he normally does (Same outcome)
    Glavenus vs Diablos
    Glav doges Diablos’s initial charge and does spin slice, Diablos charges again into Glav and does the lift and shove, and when he goes in for the kill, Glav sharpens his tail and slices down onto Diablos (Glevnus wins)
    Glavenus vs Ratha
    Ratha flame blasts Glav and dodges his slice and grapples him with his talons, Glav shakes him lose and slices him out of mid air (Glavenus wins)
    Brachy vs Ratha
    Brachy takes a leap at Rath who doges and attacks with his talons again, Brachy grabs him and slams on the ground, gets some punches in, Ratha tail swipes him off and is exploded by the slime (Brachy wins)
    Glav vs Odo
    Glav does a spin as tries to slice Odo, who dodges and jumps onto Glav’s face, Odo is shaken off and is then sliced (Glavenus wins)
    Zinorge vs Ratha
    Zin leaps onto and pins Ratha, who than flames blasts him to get away, Ratha grabbles with his talons, but Zinorge does a Thunder blast, causing Ratha to fall to the ground, and tail swipes him after (Zinorge wins)
    Narga vs Ratha
    Make it just straight up the same fight from Narga’s iceborne intro but faster paced, and ending with Ratha pinning Narga and flame blasting her (Rathalos wins)
    Barroth vs Jyra
    Add a bit at the beginning where Barroth charges into Jyra, beofre Jyra retreating into the water and the turf war progresses as normal (same outcome)
    Nergi vs Kush
    Have Nergi rush Kush instead, Kush uses his wind powers to fend off Nergi for a bit, ends with the same pin and toss across (same outcome)
    Barroth vs Diablo and Anja vs Ratha
    I got nothing, I don’t think there’s much worng to begin with
    Zinorge vs Brachy
    The two of them grapple, Zin does a Thunder blast to fend off Brach and follows with a tail swipe, Brachy charges and punches him a bunch before the slime exploded Zin (Brachy wins)
    Velk vs Kush
    The two of them fight in mid air, Velk stabbing her tail, Kush using wind to blow Velk away, before Velk summons her crystals to rain on Kush (Velkhana wins)
    Teo vs Kush
    After the mid air clash, they attack with wind and Fire respectively, making the fire tornado and an explosion blows them both back (tie)
    Gore vs Seregi
    Make it as fast paced as Velk vs Mal, if not even faster, with back and forth attacks and dodges, eventually leading to Gore over powering Sergi with help form the frenzy (Gore wins)
    Fulgur vs Narga
    Fulgur charges Narga who leaps out the way, hits Fulgur with a tail spin, Fulgur tries again but Narga uses her blade wings on Fulgur and fended off with a tail slam (Narga wins)
    Nergi vs Velk
    Similar to Velk vs Scorned, Velk dodges as Nergi chases her, Nergi catches up and they grapple in mid air with Velk stabbing him, before distracting Nergi with an ice beam and flying above him to rain down crystals, only for Nergi to power through that, grab onto Velk and slam her into the ground (Nergi wins)
    Rajang vs Velk
    Rajnag leaps and Velk who flys out the away and tries to stab Rajang, who grabs her tail and tosses her, Velk recovers and tries to freeze Rajang, who powers though it, gets a punch in before being countered by the crystal rain (Velkhana wins)
    Magna vs Teo and Kush
    They do the mid air fight agian, but this time Teo/Kush slam Magna into the ground, Magna shoos them away and charges, only for Teo/Kush do a big blast of fire/wind (Teo/Kush wins)
    Bonus New Turf Wars: Barioth vs Tigrex
    Tigrex charges at Barioth who jumps away before they clash like big cats and Tigrex pins Bari. Bari summons a blizzard at Tigrex and tries to run only for Tigrex jump onto Barioth and slams him across ground (Tigrex wins)
    Brachy vs Glavenus
    They charge and Brachy blocks Glavenus slash with arm, Glavenus turns around 360 to slash Brachy and knock him over, lunges to and tries biting his neck, Brachy punches thrice onto Glavenus to fend him off and gets in a head slam as he does. Glavenus backs up and they size each other up before Brachy slimes explodes Glavenus (Brachy wins)
    Jho vs Gargua
    Adapt the cutscene fight to a proper turf war, slightly edit to include Jho’s dragon breath and Gargua’s fire balls (Garuga wins)
