Dude, I have had this constant identity crisis and was just starting to accept that I’ll never find the true weapon, until I saw your stuff. You’ve finally ended this purgatory that felt infinite, and I’m starting to main this weapon, thanks for the help.
Wow! Your section organization, use of the green boxes to highlight things in the video, and straight forward explanations really makes this video easy to understand and enjoyable to watch. What a great guide!

Dude thank you so much. I’ve been trying to play with HBG but I couldn’t figure out why my damage wasn’t really kicking with me. I just kept on going back to melee weapons without really figuring out what I was doing wrong and putting it on the back burner for about 50 hours. Your mod help really switched it for me. It is such a huge difference now. (I was going ranged attack x2 and shield)
I'm going to be honest, I didn't think I would learn anything new from this video, but lo and behold, I never knew about that last tip about switching your equipment load out to reload your ammo.
Very good and detailed video I didn't know about the reloading trick by switching bowguns in the tent. Couple things 1)Recoil Supressor also lets you move and shoot instead of locking you into place for a few frames while you shoot or move and shoot even faster depending on the recoil. So you can shoot while moving at a walking place and instantly roll without any frames locking into you place for a half second or second because you just shot. 2)For Wyvernheart and Wyvernsnipe, but especially Wyvernheart if you have the two special ammo boost decorations like you said but load the shell, eat a might pill(20 secs) you can get some pretty insane dmg because of how much they benefit from raw attack. Put on an impact mantle before and you'll get a stun as well. Especially useful at the start of a hunt. Load in, Attack up L food, demon drug. See monster, demon powder, load special ammo(starts full at start of hunt), impact mantle, might pill use Wyvernsnipe/Wyvernheart. Get Stun, eat might pill, 2x wyvern ammo. Eat might seed(3 mins, less dmg than might pill but also mutually exclusive) since might pill has worn off, use sticky ammo and you probably will get a 2nd stun while still having impact mantle. Might Pill, Wyvern ammox2 again, congrats monster is basically dead in like 2 mins.
1) It depends from the Ammo you shoot. Some can't get any better recoil . 2) I don't think you should get Impact mantle with you when you can get Rocksteady and Temporal .
I am planning on using the HBG soon and i'm glad it's a thing but right now I am still Mastering the LBG. I feel I could be better after watching these type of vids. Thanks for the information and the effort of this video.
Just started over a week ago (26h), and I was soooo excited to try the bow guns; however, I didn't know about the critical range. My damage was so low, I decided to go HM and HH. Thanks to this guide, I'm going back to HBG!
@@redacted144 That actually depends on the type of ammo. If you are aiming with cluster, wyvern snipe or any ammo that makes you change your stance when aiming, the shield will not work.
On the off chance that someone is reviewing this guide in 2024 (or later) with the whole "Return to World" craze or whatever, like myself. Here's some stuff I was able to pick up from other guides and resources online, as well as some of my own testing: 17:07 - With the introduction of Iceborne, there is actual value in adding additional shield mods as some attacks will generate a large knockback even with guard 5 and a shield mod, but will be a medium knockback at guard 5 + 3 shield mods etc. While you still *generally* don't want to bother with multiple shield mods due to opportunity cost, there are use cases for running triple shield mod and guard up (or just multiple shield mods in general if you don't have good guard up decorations/armor) Additional Iceborne Modifications: - Long Barrel: Increases critical range and projectile speed. You can use this as an alternative to mind's eye/ballistics or with it to get an additional effect. - Power Barrel: Increases tick rate for pierce ammo and stun/exhaust build up for sticky. Do more damage with pierce, cc more with sticky - Wyvernheart: makes wyvernheart's damage build up for continuous firing higher (2.5x instead of 2x) - Wyvernsnipe: makes wyvernsnipe kind of like a sticky? It can crit and do big damage, particularly on a wakeup, but general consensus seems to be that standard snipe is better damage overall - Special Scope: adds a scope that you can attach/unattach from your bowgun. While aiming down the scope, you can adjust the zoom and your distance to enter "super critical range" (when you're using it there's extra little fiddly circles that, when all lined up, glow orange). You get 30% increased damage in Super Critical Range (you must fire while aiming with the scope, even if you're in super critical range when hip firing, it won't give you the extra damage, you *can* "quickscope" shoot though). Note on Special Scope: When trying to find some numbers on the scope, I ran across a couple posts where this guy was saying that special scope isn't really compatible with other damage mods. Whether that used to be the case or not: special scope *does* stack with other mods that modify damage (ie: close up/long range), however, it can be hard to tell if you're in the same "sweet spot" for the damage mods, sometimes giving the appearance that it "overrides" them. Additionally, if you're not in super critical, damage is calculated completely normally. This means 5 (really 4) scenarios will happen with the scope plus close up/long range equipped: 1) You're scoped in with *super critical* and in the *sweet spot* for your close up/long range. You do huge damage (sweet spot critical damage x 1.3) 2) You're scoped in with *super critical*, but not in the sweet spot. You do more damage than your normal critical range (critical range damage x 1.3) 3) You're scoped in, not in super critical, but do have the *sweet spot*. You do sweet spot critical damage. 4) You're scoped in, not in super critical or in the sweet spot. You do regular critical range damage. 5) You're not scope in and everything happens as normal, just like you never had the scope mod equipped at all. What that boils down to is this: special scope is a big damage increase, whether you're good about hitting super critical + sweet spot or not and the only downside is giving up a mod slot, which, considering rarity 12 HBG's have 5 mod slots, and generally pretty good stats on the ammo types they want to be using, that's not a big ask. If you hate the scope, don't use it, but, even if you're not great with it, it's a decent damage increase no matter what else you're doing.
This game is really hard to get into. In my first playthrough I used lance. Now with my second character I am using hbg and this is hands down best tutorial video out there. Thanks, it helped a lot

I won't call myself a bowgun main but i have played quite a bit with those weapons but i didn't know the advanced tip to have it fully reloaded after you have replenish your ammo loadout, thanks !
In my amateur testing the range mods also buff your special ammo. Close range for wycern heart and long range for wyvern snipe. In my particular case a close range mod actually buffed my wyvern heart DPS MORE than a special ammo mod. (Could be different for other people with different stats though idk)

You released this video at the perfect time for me, I just started MHW a few days ago. I don't normally enjoy ranged gameplay in any game genre, unless it's spell casting. But I ended up liking HBG early on, also mixing Insect Glaive as my chosen melee weapon. By the time I hit high ranked I started getting my ass kicked with HBG too much, so I'm pretty much a full time Glaive user now. I just wasn't sure what stats to look for to make an HBG good. I pretty much just paid attention to mag size and reload speed, and prayed I could find one with manageable ammo stats and good affinity. As of right now I'm basically using Legiana HBG as a sniper rifle with pierce, and Odogaron's LBG for normal 2. I'm still not sure what weapon I should be building to handle early elder dragons, as I'm currently right before the Nergigante fight.
I think I'll use charge blade for everything that doesn't fly and heavy bow gun for those that do. My first azure rathalos almost caused my too fail but luckily I had fortify on(which I learned to have from you!) and plus it'll be cool to use two weapons instead of just sticking to one
Actually another weapon that benefits from evade extender is the SWAX. The swax has very low evade initially when the weapon is drawn and the gunlance is one of the best dodging and repositioning weapons with evade extender especially if your using a wide shelling. I’ve been playing Mh since the first one on ps2. Played all of them except frontier.

You can face tank regular Behemoth with 3 shield mods, max guard and piercing shot (Ideally use the Glutton). I can hold aggro 90% of the time, but you will need 1-2 heals throughout the fight. You can block everything but the meteor.
Just started using a slugger sticky dark devourer mp set, and my god the stunlock are crazy, I see no reason using anything else except for variety, it’s so stupid good. Haven’t gotten this many friend requests in a long time either haha! And no, I dont cluster in mp, unless they’re outta my way. This gun is just in it’s own tier of power.
I Was using the bow until I found out you have to play pretty close to the monster to get your full damage out, I usually like playing far back but I was never good with how slow the bowguns were this video was super helpful.
HBG, sticky, cluster, and shield is just easy mode. I tried HBG after 450+ hours of dual blades, charge blade, swaxe, horn, long sword, and great sword. HBG trivialized most AT hunts.
WOW you just make a lot of the game mechanics so so so much simple for newcomers to the series. I just beat the Zoras and I keep struggling going forward with Hbows thanks for this incredible informative video!
Thanks for this, I had previously believed that I was playing MHW adequately, until you showed me the other 98% of the game I'd overlooked in my One Man Button-Mash of Perpetual Defeats. You provide players with what I'm comfortable calling some of the most peerless tutorial/guide dialog I've seen for any games out there, MHW ppl are spoiled rotten with this stuff. Thank you!
Shield mod is only good if your running HBG with spread shots while using the scope or just running spread shots. It’s not good for any other bullet type because with spread you need to be close to get the max damage and the shield will help you tank while your close range.
Thanks because of you, I've been able to get more efficient with my HBG! Other than MHXX with brave mode I haven't really used it in other MH games, but with your guides and previous vids I've been having TONS of fun with this weapon (esp. solo) so thank you xD!
For me I just grabbed a Gluttom HUG, slapped a shield and threw in the guard jewel I have and went Ham with my team, knocking down Monsters left and right, tanking hits during fights
How much extra benefit do you get from stacking multiple of the same mod on a heavy bowgun? e.g. 3 shields vs one shield or 3 damage ups vs one damage up? I think you said something in another video about the second close range up only giving an extra 5% damage compared to 10% for the first one. So it sounds like the "small", "medium", "large" benefits the game talks about are kind of misleading.
Wow I just realized you never actually made a HBG weapon guide. It’s like my math teacher who never taught me addition and subtraction but somehow managed to teach me calculus lol
Actually, there's a niche use for Deviation Suppressor. Each shot of Wyvernheart has it's own deviation, so if you're building around that special ammo deviation suppressor might be necessary. I say might because it's only really necessary on guns with high deviation, and even then you'll need at least two of the mod to make it more controllable. Overall, still not worth it, but still worth mentioning.
Wait a minute. What do you mean there's no point in using the deviation reducing mod? I get ridiculous spread on wyvernheart without using that mod. If you miss a shot your damage drops like crazy, right? Isn't that a use for it?
I'd say it might be wise to use deviation suppression on high deviation weapons when playing with controller. But really the better bet is just don't use super high deviation weapons in the first place.

HOLYYY GOD DUDE.
Wait, u can go to training area without talk to cat?
my 300hrs is pointless.
i love the background music in this video
just in case you dont know, it is from undertale. If i remember correctly, it's snowdin (may not be written correctly) theme
Wouldn't make more sense to have post the ammo video after this one?
How much extra benefit do you get from stacking multiple of the same mod on a heavy bowgun? e.g. 3 shields vs one shield or 3 damage ups vs one damage up?
I think you said something in another video about the second close range up only giving an extra 5% damage compared to 10% for the first one. So it sounds like the "small", "medium", "large" benefits the game talks about are kind of misleading.
Best tutorial I've seen.
Heavy Bowgun, charge blade, bow and longswords (because of foresight slash) are easily the best weapons in the game
Greatsword
Over 700 hours....I just found out the map training room travel now.
There are lbg builds that use 3 close up mods you use the karma it has rapid fire normal 2 build around that and you get a very powerful build
Super useful info cant wait to see the Ice born stuff he makes for this ^_^like for sure!
Wow I just realized you never actually made a HBG weapon guide. It’s like my math teacher who never taught me addition and subtraction but somehow managed to teach me calculus lol
Two thousand hours of world and this is how i learn how to get into the training area faster.
What bowgun are you using against behemoth in the clips throughout the video?
with 3 shieldd mods you can block nergigante's dive with very little health and stamina loss with no guard boost
What about shield/recoil suppression and reload assist is that good and what would you recommend for the anjanath H.B.G 1
Great video and great content.
Your tutorial's awesome.
re; shield mods, Loyal Thunder says Hi. :)
Wait a minute. What do you mean there's no point in using the deviation reducing mod? I get ridiculous spread on wyvernheart without using that mod. If you miss a shot your damage drops like crazy, right? Isn't that a use for it?
Mad lad guide
This is a wonder idiot's guide to the hbg, thanks for it!
Awesome job
I'd say it might be wise to use deviation suppression on high deviation weapons when playing with controller. But really the better bet is just don't use super high deviation weapons in the first place.
