Hey Arekkz I know these are super old now (5 years ago!) but thanks for this entire series. You really smashed it out of the park with your excellent sense of (a) giving a solid overview summary, (b) training newcomers up on the basics, and finally (c) dipping their toe into the expert waters by showing some of the better combos and describing situations where you'd want to use each (including damage numbers).
3:40 He didn’t mention this in the lbg video either, but drawing with triangle forces you to reload if the ammo you have selected isn’t full. It’s dangerous when you’re hunting if you didn’t intend to reload.
@@JoelLinus I do wish the game just had a draw weapon button. The inconsistency on which input will *just* draw the weapon and which will do something else is very frustrating as a new player.
It all depends on your style of HBG'ing. If you like getting up close, I'd suggest shield and close range mods. If you like being more evasive, I'd suggest 2 reload mods and a single shield mod, just in case.
seing as this is a tutorial and many people might watch this. Do NOT wake up monsters with wyvernfire as arrekz did here. Wyvern Fire has 2 hits, one is the capsule bursting and the second is the actual, quite strong, wyvernfire hit. move backwards until you the the "out of range" indicator. because this tells you that the capsule will not hit the monster. The wyvernfire will then get the sleeping damage bonus (x2) instead of the weak capsule. Ofc, even an average GS powercharge (or if skilled a second hit of the true charge) outdamages this but in most hunts you will be the one with the best damage option if you do it correctly.
With that trick in mind how would you rank hbg in the hierarchy of wake ups. I normally wake up as a hammer main unless there's a gs. I am interested to see if my hbg friend might have a better wake up. The hierarchy I've followed so far is gs, hammer, cb with saed, switch axe, cb without saed, hbg wyvern fire, gunlance, and after that it's basically just let the bombs do the work, assuming strongest attacks. With the trick where would you place hbg, also please help correct my list if you know a better/more accepted order.
I just wanted to leave a comment here saying that this is without a doubt my favorite type of weapon tutorial. I appreciate how much work these video takes, but please know that all of it is necessary and appreciated.

As a HBG user I'd like to note that you sort of speak of Piercing as a secondary option behind Normal and Spread however Piercing builds are right up there with them as a constant DPS option - the Legiana Heavy Bow Gun has great reload, capacity, damage, and recoil for all 3 Pierce shots and puts out impressive numbers along with having a good selection of support ammo types. It also lets you adopt a longer range style than the other types I'd also argue that it can be even more user friendly than Normal ammo because it just needs you to shoot center of mass through the longest part of the monster (head to tail or wing to wing or body to wing) whereas Normal shots have to hit specific weak parts that may or may not be facing you depending on positioning (and the weapon isn't so quick, to get around to a weakspot either). If you have an Elementless decoration it will enhance any weapon that are unable to use elemental attacks, including light and Heavy Bowguns that lack the ability to use elemental shot (fire/ice/lightning/water/dragon ect), like the Diablos HBG or Jagras HBG.
A few tips: -If you want to practice Wyvernshot use the Ghillie Mantle to get a really easy time lining up your shot. -The Legiana HBG (Shattercyst) can allow for an excellent Pierce Ammo-based playstyle as it has no deviation and can load a ton of pierce ammo (I run 2 shield mods and 1 long range) -Shield doesn't work when reloading and you cannot roll while reloading. Honestly, as a guy who now mains the HBG in world, always use a shield. The HBG's roll is so bad, and should really be used for repositioning rather than dodging. Having a shield also allows you to fire more aggressively since blocking tends to be safer than dodging in nearly all situations once you hit the late stages of the game, especially Tempered Elders. A single bad roll can easily get you killed or forced out of the fight to heal/nulberry, where as blocking only causes some light chip damage. Even the most powerful attacks in the game are rendered jokes if you run Guard Up on your HBG. The downsides are very limited, and safety is far more important for your DPS than *slightly* more damage. Given that monsters in World have some of the largest, and longest lingering hitboxes in their attacks, just block. Its safer, and can prevent carting in high level missions by preventing things like Paralysis, Stun, or just getting knocked into a corner and having a Rathian charge you 3 times in a row.
agreed, i always take one because all you have to do is stop shooting for a second when you see a windup that's about to hit you in the face and you're much too slow with this weapon to avoid it
I don’t use shield and just use 3 vitality jewels to avoid getting one shot by tempered kirin or teostra. The roll isn’t as bad as you say it is, I actually like it
As someone who uses the hbg a lot, as for armor, I suggest going full val or 3 piece xeno. More often than not, with the xeno, I can plant around 7+ stickies before consuming 1 ammo.
I started the game using the LBG, decided I wanted to try other weapons so watched these tutorials, ended up back at the LBG seems so well rounded. I definitely learned stuff by watching them anyway, and how others play in a hunt.
Definitely should add that the melee attack does quite respectable damage this game. It guarantees kelbi horns and it's actually better for hunting mobs of smaller monsters since you can easily knock them out and beat them while they're down. It's nice for triggering flash and nectar bugs and its ability to KO is better than I first thought.
A very important information on unsheathing the bowgun. Pressing triangle forces an auto reload after unsheathing if the selected ammo isn't full, pressing R2 will not. This is crucial because against some fights you just want to unsheath to block with the shield, doing it with triangle will kill you instead.
Since I am a regular HBG user, I also noticed that with “Ranged Attack Up” mod you can get a slight more damage boost at near the maximum range of your critical distance. But I mainly use Pierce ammo, so maybe that’s one of the ammo affective by the mod.
I don't suppose there's a faster way to equip than using RT? It's still so slow... I think someone told me about a skill to equip it faster but I don't know any more than that.
I feel like this is really important. When I first picked up HBG I kept reloading on draw because I was used to using Y from my melee weapon. RT draw basically changed my life when I discovered it.
I just tried this weapon out, and I think I might have found my favorite weapon (thought that would be the dual blades). The heavy gunner feeling I get from the weapon is satisfying to a degree I haven't felt with any other weapon, especially when using Wyvernheart/Wyvernsnipe.
I've been running Heavy Bowgun for the first time a few weeks now and I have felt like I was missing something. I needed to know about armor skills and watching this tutorial helps a lot, thank you sir.
everytime a new weapon workshop comes out I watch it. Everytime I watch, I immediately craft that weapon as soon as I get to play. *shakes fist* darn you abd your amazing videos Arrekz! you're making me run out of materials and money!!!
Thank you so much for your effort putting up that whole weapon workshop series! It‘s helping people new to the weapon so much and I learned a lot myself. Your explanations are on point and easy to understand. Keep it going! Greetz
Hammer main, i wanted to spice thing up since a friend is starting and tried the bow, but wasn't feeling it. Tried Heavy bowgun and had a bit of a cold sweat when i saw all the ammo types and variations of cappacity from diffrents bowguns, but when i discovered what each ammo does and how hard it hits... It's pretty fun.
I am a charge blade main and I fell in love with the light bowgun and then shortly after I fell in love with the bow.. little did I know the heavy bowgun would surpass both of those for my favorite ranged weapon. Big surprise to me honestly.
I've been playing Monster Hunter since it came out in the PS2 console but I didn't know a lot of the things you've covered here. Thank you so much for this!
Gio Ded what I meant if for new players as while it ok if you don’t miss but eventually you’ll run out and have to farm (once you get to high rank you can buy them all though)
You know something I've been running a bow gun since this was released and while I barely have time to play with work and the like, I thought I had gotten the hang of it. I was wrong. You just made this weapon so much more fun for me. Thank you for the videos Arekkz
As a note, after playing with wyvern snipe a fair bit, it seems that on longer monsters like diablos, vaal hazak, and xeno'jiva, if you get a lot of initial hits with the first shot, there are very few secondary explosions, meaning you actually want to avoid max length pierces to capitalize on the secondary explosion's higher damage.
Just started to use the Bowgun after 100h+ with SnS..... I really like the different playstyle but what I like evn more, are tutorials like yours which made it waaaaaay easier for me to understand what I am doing and not running around and looking like an Idiot (in which I am really talented xD) Thanks alot for this Video !
Earplugs are great. Most veterans will tell you to just learn when to roll through them, but Earplugs are way more useful on ranged or weapons with longer attacks like LS's helm breaker or GS.
Wyvernsnipe recharges decently fast; often enough that you may not always have an opening ready when it's ready to be used. My advice? Create that opening by working smoke bombs into your item build. Pop smoke, load the round, and pop off an easy snipe in the middle of the fight. Works great if you've run out of sleep or paralysis ammo, or if the monster has gotten too resistant. It also pretty much guarantees your safety while loading the ammo while playing in a team or solo. You can even use the smoke to reload all your ammo in the middle of the fight too.
HBG main here. Another tip for the jumping reloads. Make sure to dodge roll after your ammo is reloaded after landing. This allows your character to not be vulnerable to attacks while the 1 second delay before you can move !
Omg man I used to watch your vids on mh4u but I was so young I didn’t have in an account but now I do so I’m subbing 👍 Ooh the nostalgia I'm feeling rn
I think some important points missed. Using HBG Meele on Kelbi ( Deers ) will have high chance to drop Kelbi Horns. Also Wyvernsnipe is exposive damage meaning those hits can break horns \ armor plates \ spikes
I'm using the Deviljho HBG. With Attack+7 at max upgrade no augments, I'm sitting at 399 attack. Without eating or any in-hunt attack buffs. USE. THIS. BOWGUN. With two recoil mods and a close range mod I'm consistently hitting 100's+ on weak spots at 450+ attack with buffs. It's so stupid.
Damian Joseph There's better spread weapons than Jho like Jagras or Nergigante. Jagras stacks with Elementless so that's a 10% raw increase and adding the attack boosts. Oh man.
Quick Sheath might be another good skill for a new player who chose this weapon, considering the time it takes sheath it due to its size and mobility, a quick sheath skill might save you a cart and give you a chance to heal up.
I normally run charge blade or glaive, depending on whether I'm hunting with a team/fast or slow monsters, but I've wanted to play with a ranged weapon for sometime and this is the first of your videos I watched after I picked HBG. Very informative, and very straighforward. Thank you for this! +1 sub! I'll also be perusing the rest of your MHW weapon vids to get a feel for what I can do better!

Im not sure if I heard you go over exhaust ammo. It deals exhaust damage which is translated into KO on the head. It’s really useful against monsters like Diablo.
After EX Behemoth this guide needs to be updated to show which HBG use Cluster Bomb and how to put crafting it in the radial menu and to only use cluster bomb
If I'm understanding it right, critical distance is essentially damage falloff. They way you described it made it seem way more complex than it actually is. I was thinking if you were too close you would also lose damage. I guess its the name "critical distance" which makes it seem like its a specific distance you want to maintain rather than just "don't be too far away".
veteren monster hunter from first gen, still needed this guide because the last time i touched a bowgun of any kind was when i first got monster hunter on ps2 and thought i could kill rathian with it on my first try with the weapon. quickly learned my mistake and went back to greatsword. not any insite or importance in this comment. i just wanted to share xD
NEVER reload until a monster is attacking something else or you're 100% sure you are out of range. Also you can rearrange your ammo to stack it. I go from sticky 1 >sticky 2 > sticky 3. Major damage.
I appreciate that you added a segment on guarding. I made an hbg with a shield but I didn't really get how it worked. Thanks for the hard work, Arekkz! Question though, how small of a window is the guard? Are we talking somewhere near charge blade size or sword and shield?
The size of the shield isn't really important; as long as you're facing the monster and not moving, the shield will be active. The strength of the shield, however, is another matter entirely.
OG Man you can move. The shield is always active while your weapon is drawn and you are not doing any other action (reloading, shooting, rolling, etc). Guard reduces chip damage and stamina loss, extra Shield mods reduce the knockback from certain attacks (not necessarily the damage), and Guard Up from either Urugaan set bonus or the decoration that gives it will allow you to block most laser/ultimate attacks that Elders use in addition to “grabs” such as Deviljho’s. I personally advocate 1 Shield mod, Guard 5 (lv3 charm and Bazel body), and Guard up only if you really want it for those specific monsters.
Been playing about with HBG and Shield and honestly, it's weirdly satisfying. I've gone for the set bonus of the Uragaan armour and maxed up defense and what not and honestly, it's a very bizarre badass feeling. I'm used to leaping like crazy to get out of the way and still getting caught but it was kinda cool just standing there, switching ammo on the fly, having giant monsters charge into me and not even moving an inch. Getting them to hit your shield takes a bit of trial and error to figure out where the attacks land but when you do get, you never get hit.
@@skeletonwar4445 Depends on the hunt, the bowgun you use and most importantly your own playstyle. If you're going against Kulve Taroth you always take artillery.
@@Rendorina Even against Kulve it's not necessary. If a skill is optionally useful to have for one single hunt in the entire game, then yeah, I'd call that kinda useless.
@@skeletonwar4445 nope, artillery is not useless. If you like using sticky ammo then it is a massive increase in damage and you should be using sticky ammo if you have it available.
Just picked up the LBG today and loving it! Can't wait to try HBG - the only time I've used it is that double Diablos Arena Quest, and it was hectic as anything but I managed to pull through... just!
It's worth mentioning that when waking up a monster with wyvern ammo you want to stand a little distance away because the small hit of the wyvern ammo hits in melee range only and you want the big hit to get the damage bonus.
Hey arekkz, i really hope you continue the top 5 weapons videos, im planning on making the top 5 of every weapon, keep the awesome videos, you have helped me since tri
Thx for this great guide. I recently got augmentation streamstones for a bowgun so I've decided to try heavy. Still getting the hang of it since the playstyle is, obviously, vastly different from the hammer but this guide helps.
I believe for free element/ammo up each level applies for each ammo level. So one point in it gives +1 total clip size for normal 1, spread 1 etc. two points will then add +1 clip size for normal 2 etc. and same for level 3 and normal/pierce/spread 3. I didn’t check for elemental ammo and the specialized ones but for anyone using the basic 3 damage bullets this is how it works.
additional skills I use often are artillery and bombidier. I love sleep bombing and I use sticky ammo to crack horns. artillery increases the damage of wyvern and sticky ammo. bombidier increases barrel bomb damage.
If you enter your tent at camp, it reloads all your ammo. Entering the tent also sharpens your melee Weapons

Its safer, and can prevent carting in high level missions by preventing things like Paralysis, Stun, or just getting knocked into a corner and having a Rathian charge you 3 times in a row.
agreed, i always take one because all you have to do is stop shooting for a second when you see a windup that's about to hit you in the face and you're much too slow with this weapon to avoid it
How many levels in shield?
depending on the weapon...
if you dont want to avoid too much 2 is good...
I don’t use shield and just use 3 vitality jewels to avoid getting one shot by tempered kirin or teostra. The roll isn’t as bad as you say it is, I actually like it
As a lance player, i agree, use that sheild. Don't even try to fight Diablos without a sheild
these guides you made will forever be the best anyone has ever put out, still love it
I love that he mentions what will disrupt your teammates. Such a useful fact.
heavy bowgun tutorial: get a cluster ammo lv3 HBG, rocksteady mantle and glue your finger to the R2 button.
As someone who uses the hbg a lot, as for armor, I suggest going full val or 3 piece xeno. More often than not, with the xeno, I can plant around 7+ stickies before consuming 1 ammo.
500 game hours later and I only knew about the all ammo reload just now. Wow.
You can space it so that the wyvern ammo’s first hit misses. I believe the spacing is when you’re backing up and the “out of range” pops up.
I absolutely love the intros to these videos. They showcase the weapon so well and genuinely make you wanna main them
I started the game using the LBG, decided I wanted to try other weapons so watched these tutorials, ended up back at the LBG seems so well rounded.
I've been waiting for this one specifically for like 2 months! So much hype!
It's also worth noting that drawing with the triangle/Y button draws into a load while th R1/RT does not
MrWyatt145 That is correct. If you swap ammo to a fully loaded one then it just draws normally
I don't suppose there's a faster way to equip than using RT? It's still so slow... I think someone told me about a skill to equip it faster but I don't know any more than that.
I feel like this is really important. When I first picked up HBG I kept reloading on draw because I was used to using Y from my melee weapon.
RT draw basically changed my life when I discovered it.
wow, you just changed my life
I just tried this weapon out, and I think I might have found my favorite weapon (thought that would be the dual blades). The heavy gunner feeling I get from the weapon is satisfying to a degree I haven't felt with any other weapon, especially when using Wyvernheart/Wyvernsnipe.
Can I ask you what the best thing to look for in a new hbg
The editing in this is perfect ,displaying the button prompts is a really nice touch.
HBG is by far one of my favorite weapons in the game. Especially with shield mods on it.
Sad no one replied to this
Sad no one replied to you either @@dark-yato
Thank you so much for your effort putting up that whole weapon workshop series! It‘s helping people new to the weapon so much and I learned a lot myself. Your explanations are on point and easy to understand. Keep it going! Greetz
I needed this video, I wanted to try out the bowgun but I didn't know where to start so this helped really well.
Thanks Arekkz, I have just recently picked the HBG up to supplement my Hammer/Horn and trying to find guides on it. Lovely lovely.
Easily the best HBG tutorial on the web. Good stuff bro!
Iv always wanted to use bow gun but the problem I always thought to be a problem is having to farm ammo every hunt
Gio Ded I’m on about low level
Yeah, that's why I'm not using it.
Gio Ded what I meant if for new players as while it ok if you don’t miss but eventually you’ll run out and have to farm (once you get to high rank you can buy them all though)
Gio Ded I think it would make for a better concept introducing ammo as you upgrade
Gio Ded I mean like u start with spread and normal and slice
I didn't expect both Bowguns in back-to-back tutorials!
I really like the different playstyle but what I like evn more, are tutorials like yours which made it waaaaaay easier for me to understand what I am doing and not running around and looking like an Idiot (in which I am really talented xD)
Thanks alot for this Video !
I'm surprised no earplugs armor skills ever mentioned. I love using earplugs lvl 4 to hit monsters while they are completely open during a roar
My god these intros are epic!
Salim B. IKR
I am running HBG so this was very helpful. Especially with skills and ammo rotations
That’s such a beautiful mixed set omfg
He didn’t mention that the guard doesn’t take effect during recoil/firing or reloading
Yeah, I noticed that too. The shield is still useful, but you have to pay attention to the monster more closely.
HBG main here. Another tip for the jumping reloads. Make sure to dodge roll after your ammo is reloaded after landing. This allows your character to not be vulnerable to attacks while the 1 second delay before you can move !
The best tutorials out there's. Thanks Arekkz
Omg man I used to watch your vids on mh4u but I was so young I didn’t have in an account but now I do so I’m subbing 👍
Ooh the nostalgia I'm feeling rn
I think some important points missed. Using HBG Meele on Kelbi ( Deers ) will have high chance to drop Kelbi Horns. Also Wyvernsnipe is exposive damage meaning those hits can break horns \ armor plates \ spikes
Been using HBG ever since the original. Fighting Lao was what peaked my interest in it and I've never regretted it
I'm using the Deviljho HBG.
What ammo
Normal 3 with a Force shot jewel, forgot to mention that.
hmm
Not worth for me then, I thought you ment Shotgun ammo
Keep in mind that it has spread 3 and is affected by close range mod. I normally hit 30-40s per pellet with spread shots on weak spots.
Damian Joseph There's better spread weapons than Jho like Jagras or Nergigante. Jagras stacks with Elementless so that's a 10% raw increase and adding the attack boosts. Oh man.
Thank you! Now I can JFK some malform dinosaurs!
This is the weapon i dont really want to use.. But it change my mind after seeing this! nice tutorials as ever! kudos arekkz
I started with this weapon when I got the game recently, and I absolutely love it.
MOAR DAKA
Quick Sheath might be another good skill for a new player who chose this weapon, considering the time it takes sheath it due to its size and mobility, a quick sheath skill might save you a cart and give you a chance to heal up.
Thanks for this guide sir.ive been waiting for your workshop tutorial before using a weapon
I normally run charge blade or glaive, depending on whether I'm hunting with a team/fast or slow monsters, but I've wanted to play with a ranged weapon for sometime and this is the first of your videos I watched after I picked HBG.
Very informative, and very straighforward. Thank you for this! +1 sub! I'll also be perusing the rest of your MHW weapon vids to get a feel for what I can do better!
from learning how to use heavy bowgun from this video to a year later getting a fatalis in 3 minutes speedrun with hbg heroics, thanks for the base to become a speedrunner :)
HBG is one of my sleeper favorites(don't use it alot, but I love it when I do).
Best heavy bowgun video no nonsense just straight facts I'm itching to get back on my game now
Im not sure if I heard you go over exhaust ammo. It deals exhaust damage which is translated into KO on the head. It’s really useful against monsters like Diablo.
Little tip:
*Slicing ammo is op
*You can put Ammo crafting on your quick wheel (so more slicing ammo)
I use Tobi Heavy Bowgun
After EX Behemoth this guide needs to be updated to show which HBG use Cluster Bomb and how to put crafting it in the radial menu and to only use cluster bomb
Haha not even an hour ago I was wondering when you would get to the Heavy Bowgun, didn't think it would be so soon
Quick hbg tip holing triangle on an empty or semi empty clip will proceed to load all your ammo in order
I miss Seige mode from the older games. Felt like a badass with barraging a monster with it.
I love your MH vids man. Very informative and helpful.... And weapon changing persuasive lol.
I've got close to 50 hunts with heavy bow gun, I switched to charge blade a few days ago and I'm loving it.
veteren monster hunter from first gen,
still needed this guide because the last time i touched a bowgun of any kind was when i first got monster hunter on ps2 and thought i could kill rathian with it on my first try with the weapon.
quickly learned my mistake and went back to greatsword.
not any insite or importance in this comment. i just wanted to share xD
The strength of the shield, however, is another matter entirely.
ohh, so you're not suppose to move? Didn't know that. :0
Edalborez ah, my bad. Must have assumed based off experiences with other shields.
The intro to this video perfectly summed up why I main this weapon.
why no mention of artillery skill? I'm new to HBG but I feel like it is a great skill to have, dem wyvern fire
Cause it's not worth it
@@skeletonwar4445 Depends on the hunt, the bowgun you use and most importantly your own playstyle.
Can't wait to try HBG - the only time I've used it is that double Diablos Arena Quest, and it was hectic as anything but I managed to pull through... just!
The music when you go to a different point sounds like I’m elementary. Awesome! Nice guide, I’ve been meaning to get into a different weapon.
According to the hunters notes slicing ammo also works on Horns or other breakable parts
I switch to heavy bow-gun a while back and I must say it's been a blast....
I believe for free element/ammo up each level applies for each ammo level. So one point in it gives +1 total clip size for normal 1, spread 1 etc. two points will then add +1 clip size for normal 2 etc. and same for level 3 and normal/pierce/spread 3. I didn’t check for elemental ammo and the specialized ones but for anyone using the basic 3 damage bullets this is how it works.
very informative ive always been more melee but im starting to get into the bows and the heavy bow gun is just the hardest for me to understand.
additional skills I use often are artillery and bombidier. I love sleep bombing and I use sticky ammo to crack horns. artillery increases the damage of wyvern and sticky ammo. bombidier increases barrel bomb damage.
Thanks for your weapon tutorials. Very informative!
Fkn love the intro brings back great memories with that theme
I love running evade extender to my heavy bowgun builds to make it easier to move around
awesome as always Arekkz :)
