A few lance quick tips: -Drop rocksteady mantle, clutch counter gives it. Add health booster, hold ground. - guard dash. Spam it. Love it. - lance likes to hug most monsters. But rajang, poke with a 10 ft pole. You out range most rajang moves, barely. - leap attack has 360 aim and out ranges most attacks. It can even mount into attacks, after taking damage.
Guard dash is legitimately goated, I was so used to just hopping around because I used to play Gunlance and I figured Lance would have the same playstyle. Hopping with Lance felt pitiful and I thought the only mobility it has was the jousting charge. But goddamn once I incorporated guard dashing into my hunts I was like a mobile fortress. It does so much. Shields you while moving you, covers a good distance, can lead into an advancing thrust with deceptively long range, or a shield bash for KO damage, it has s, and can go in any direction after an attack so you are completely protected while you reposition
That was fun! I appreciate how you do these recap videos cuz I had to do real life stuff and had to leave stream right before Jho. Some unsolicited advice for you if you mess around with lance again: practice guard advance. After a poke you hold R2+triangle and a direction (PlayStation controls) . It’s useful for positioning and gap closing. Chaining the guard advance forward and then triangle for the triple thrust (then repeat) is your gap closer. You can also guard advance in any direction ( forward, backward, right , left) which is great for repositioning mid fight and your shield is up the whole time. Another mechanic that’s useful is delaying your power guard. If you know that you want to power guard but the monster is doing a long animation, just hold normal counter for a bit and trigger power guard right before the monsters attack connects. This was you don’t sit in power guard and drain all of your stamina waiting for the hit. This is also useful in a reverse scenario where you go for a counter and you’re stuck charging while the monster takes its time and you know you are gonna release early and get hit. You can just go into power guard and extend your counter. Hope this helps.
Pro-tip = the advancing guard (forward + Y, while guarding) can actually be done omnidirectionally (even backwards, despite the name) after any move. Just like a hop, but it blocks. You can get kinda crazy evasion with chained advancing guard + leaping thrusts.
The selling point of the lance is facing the monster head on countering its moves. The challenge is positioning to keep the pressure high and learning which moves cannot be defended.
Always love hunters giving the Lance a shot and realizing how much it can do! Heads up for the Lance, the lunge you did into the shield bash can also be a lunge into a thrust, it’s a really good mobility tool for those situations you were having with Furious Rajang, since the first lunge has guard properties on it. You can also use it and Counter Thrust to reset your pokes instead of back hopping as well. Really good tool overall. Besides that, great hunts!
Lance is super fun once you fully understand the weapon (also don't forget guard dashing, it really is your bread and butter and gives you a smoother gameplay). Also, once you play Lance it's kinda hard to play anything else lmao, at least that's how i feel
Furious Rajang is like "Fuck the Lance main in particular" kind of monster. He moves fast, does crap ton of chip damage and heavy knock back even when you have guard at level 5. When Capcom released this damn thing the first thing I thought was "Yeah Capcom just hate us Lance main"
Watching mh wilds stuff is giving me world suggestions and I'm all for it. I miss lance, my favorite weapon, the mobility is just great I put it up there with bow when mastered. Thing to learn with lance is if you ever feel like you are in danger, especially with health aug, the last thing you wanna do is sheat.
I'm loving lance so far! The scary thing when you're in danger with Rajang is, sometimes you're in KO range even if you block because of his chip damage. He's a tricky one!
Long time lancer here, welcome to the cult. It’s really funny seeing you go from diablos, lance’s best matchup, to teostra, arguably lance’s worst matchup
Not sure if you know this about Ruiner or not, but whichever arm he lifts high into the air is the side he will slam down into with his nova. If it doesn't look like either are raised by much then it's forward
Hell yeah, Lance!!! It was fun watching you learn this when i caught it on stream! The Lance reveal for Wilds after almost 2 weeks did not disappoint, it's looking phenominal and i was not expecting them to do nearly as much as they have done with it! Looks like it might be a KO king with all the new Shield moves
Oh yeah, Lance is looking SOLID af! I like the emphasis on the shield, and the extra pokey poke combos add a lot of extra zest to the combat I'm glad you got to join the stream! It was a lotta fun playing it for y'all!
Great vid, comments give a lot of great advice but one tip I don't see many people talking about is power guard. It costs too much stamina to spam all the time but if you mess up a counter, get stuck in an AOE, or don't know where the attack is coming from/cant keep the camera on the monster, its a great tool to have.
As a lance main, I'm obligated to tell you that, even though I absolutely love the weapon, it has a huge weakness and that is velkana. Any form of velkana is harder for lance than for most weapons. If you really want a challenge, arch tempered velkana is where it's at. Lovely to see that you liked the poke stick tho, that's great.
Lance is amazing!! So I was primarily a CB main in MHW for the longest time, and about a year ago I switched over to the Lance and have never looked back. It offers the best defence in the game combined with satisfying damage and the best counter attacks.
It is fun to learn weapons. I completely mastered all melee weapons and the bow in mhw and mhr with over 40 hunts with each weapon. I'm training with the bowguns now to complete the list, and it's not as hard as I thought it would be.
As a lance main its hard to go to other weapons, I get so used to just not carting ever lol. I put together a build with health recovery + Vaal Hazak super recovery and its insane how fast I get my health back EDIT: some tips: Advancing guard (R2 + Y) is a great movement option as you block while doing it, letting you easily close the gap. It can also be followed up with one of two attacks, Y for a lunging three-hit poke that moves you even further, or B for the shield bash that can deal stun damage. IMO the shield bash is kinda useless as the hitbox seems very narrow, I rarely use it. You can reverse the direction of your charge by back + A, letting you run through a downed monster multiple times. the final stab attack on the charge can also be aimed backwards like this if you overshoot the monster
Lance Main here, Black Diablos is the cornerstone of Lance supremacy and the only reason that it is my favourite monster is because it is so fun to lance. Good choice!
you can get into your counter clutch animation much faster than normal if you LT as you see your character start the normal counter animation with their shield rather than going into gurard shot and then counter clutch. Lance can also chain guard dashing with pokes, hops or leaping thrust for gap closing or repositioning i tend to do this backwards if the monster moves very far away and usually can get there as fast if not faster than most other weapons without using the charge. you can get into power guard from the recoil of a block if it sends you backwards. Shield bash is a bit of a long commitment move as the recovery of it is very long but you can go into counter to cancel its recovery, you can also cancel the long recovery of leaping thrust with guard dash and vice versa. Once you get it down Offensive guard uptime should skyrocket, havent played lance in a while but i used to main it before switching HH, hope some of these help
Never really played lance, but every time I see it's gameplay it's so simplistically satisfying. Side note: I hope you revisit swaxe! As a swaxe main myself the struggle is real, but it's everso addicting.
I did infact revisit Swaxe! I didn't make a video about it, but it's on my channel as a stream VOD. Went much better than the first time I used it haha
Monkeh is difficult as a lancer mostly because the majority of his strong attacks push you back a little, even with maxed out guard, robbing you of counter-attacking. A decent way to deal with it is by pressing the dodge button (spacebar on pc, probably X on ps5) to interrupt the getting-pushed-back animation into a power block, from which you can do a strong counter.
try claw guarding on fatalis while he do this fireball fly attack youll be flying across the map while going to fatalis head.. its one of the most epic thing i did and it feels good.
People meme on Lance as the passive weapon all the time, but in reality, the safety of the shield means you can basically be in the monster's face attacking 100% of the time.
You should always do the high thrust. High thrust does a bit more dmg than the mid and this will accumulate in a long run since pokes are your main dmg output.
Ahh. For some reason, I was under the impression that high thrusts did *slightly* less damage. Or at least I **think** that's how it was in the older games, but I might be wrong. Thanks!
@@WreckitRai Third poke does the same damage for both normal and high thrust, but the first two attacks deal slightly more damage in high thrust. Third poke always deals more damage than the first two pokes regardless. Hops and guard dashes + shield bashes are for repositioning, leaping thrust for gap closing. If you want to continue the loop without having to hop, just cancel thrust to reset it. Or just do the most optimal damage combo which is triple poke + dash attack + triple poke + dash attack and so on. Some monsters are specially fun to fight with lance, like nergigante and ruiner, because you can just keep countering them forever between pokes.
Should Also be noted for anyone who comes across this later, While high thrust does more damage, there are reasons to use mid as well. Primarily against smaller frame monsters or if it's like kushala who have massive bounce zones if you high poke. This is of course, less important in master rank when you have white sharpness at almost all times but it is worth noting.
It's easy to get drunk on Lance. I am. At 2500 hunts and counting, I'm still hanging fun. I lean heavy into Stamina and defensive skills. I can park in KT's magma and laugh at her. The attack after a max speed charge is very powerful. That twin thrust can LEVEL monsters. Lance is criminally underrated and underused. It's the least popular weapon in World.
you should also try lance with evade and evade extender and evade side jump instead of block another cool way of playing lance did a devil jho once without ever getting hit
I’ve beaten every monster in the game with Lance except Alatreon and the Rajangs. Switched to Greatsword for those. The former because lance does terrible elemental damage, and the latter because too much chip damage/knockback.
I tried lance for a little while. Its stupidly effective but also really repetitive and with the right build, almost impossible to die using it. It wasn't for me ultimately. I hope they rework the less popular weapons in future titles to make them more interesting and engaging
Crazy early! Hmm... I'll need to think about that question some more. So far, IG and Gunlance are up there, but Lance was really fun too, and Switch Axe once I got more experience with it!

As one of the 3% of Lance mains I LOVE hearing people discovering the "boring poke poke poke hop stick" is actually violently dynamic.
It really is aye. Hella underrated
You forgot CHARGE!
Just having an auto-counter makes it far more satisfying. This is fun to run a crit/healing build with where Peak Performance is up most of the hunt.
We're dozens! I love poke stick so much.
"violently dynamic" is a very accurate description.

Just in time for the lance reveal in Wilds
Fun fact - I did this entire video in a single night for that very reason lmao
Lance is a lot of fun once you really learn the weapon. It has mobility, it can hit hard, great defensive play, and the layered armor is great!
my smile disappeared when i saw furious rajang, i will only touch that thing when the lance is at least 15 feet long...
That was fun! I appreciate how you do these recap videos cuz I had to do real life stuff and had to leave stream right before Jho. Okay, I need to give the lance a try. Those were some of the most intense, action-packed hunts I've ever watched!

Yezus...😂😅😢@@ReptilianAnusWizzard
feels like a lot of Iceborne in general is anti-lance. lots of grabs, AoE's, unblockables and chip damage
Haven't watched yet but i know this is gonna be good. I started loving to play Lance just a few weeks ago.
Hell yeah, Lance was way funner than I expected so I had a great time with it!

Hey, thanks! I'm really happy to hear that! Hope you have a blast with the rest of the videos :D

Advancing guard was a game changer for me when I was learning lance. The lack of mobility became a complete nonissue.
