The problem is the same with any other hybrid- you need to have a reason to want to use both and not just bring something better at one or the other.
The real problem of Long is to not have enough raw or elemental damage to complement the shelling. What makes normal powerful is not the full burst, in fact the difference between a normal and a long burst is like a 5% less when you get capacity because long shells are much stronger and with capacity the burst becomes +1/3 stronger while capacity only makes normal full burst a +1/5 stronger. Now in battle, use poke shell normally but when the monster goes down switch to slam sweep on the weakpoint. Once you get enough damage, slap stick overpass wide and so you can get the best of both worlds. The distance between wide and slapstick is not as wide. I use this a lot against Kulve Taroth, those horns take huge damage once broken and I teched WE and affinty booster for it in my 'optimal' farming build.
Noticed your vid was pre IB.. with the addition of wyrmstrike blast and the buff on charge shelling having less recoil, what do you think of Long Shellings?
I think there is something you need to consider in this analysis, if player eat for bombardier, the wide and long would do better, which swing lance doesn't take advantage of. Personally when i play gunlance (wide or long) I always eat for bombardier.
Welp... I've been using long 4 gunlance ever since I could craft the zora magdaros L4 gunlance (then swapped it for a L4 form kulve), and didn't knew that it was considered a meme. I was happy that I was getting sub 10 minutes hunts on tier 3 tempereds, but I suppose I could get even lower then if I could go with wide 4 then? Will have to try it out now
I like to go with the wide shelling lance because if your going to use swing lance for max dps, you should probably just use swing *any sword*. The boom is fun and satisfying.
The reason to go Wide shell is being the right choice in almost every monster. Slap sweep and aerial are best for breaking a world record but requires collaboration from the monster. You aren't going to get any of it on AT monsters, Behemoth or Lunastra. Slapstick is hard on them and aerial is staight up imposible.
Even with poor hit zone monsters, I’ll use shell poke shell poke shell poke, instead of shell*3 + poke, it remains your position and poke and shell cancels each other’s animation. The shell poke shell poke shell reload combo is not in the spreadsheet, I guess it’s very close to poke*3 shell*3 reload but still. Positioning is my biggest gripe about swinglance, when you chain trip your target, try to get the most combo uptime, you keep moving forward; plus the wide sweep, it’s very difficult to keep hitting the weak spot.
There are some threshold on how many pokes you want to throw based in how much you are hitting for. the trick for shell poke shell shell is to place yourself in a side so wide area hits the monster in the side or place yourself against a wall. If you are using shell poke shell shell I asume you are using R6 or R7 wide gunlances that have crap melee whatnever you try and the poke is meaninless
@@caoslayer Thanks for your tips. Basically, it's R7 Bomber against Lavasioth/Lunastra, the position problem is quite noticable against Lavasioth generally, and Luna if you are not using mantle tanking in front of her face.

Sorry we weren't very clear with the description. What we meant is you can't do the charge 4x shell combo off the bat. Regardless of whether you do 1 shell/poke > charge x3 or the rising slash cancel into charge x4, the dps is lower than simply charge x4 spam looping. The extra animation time on the rising slash cancel makes it have lower DPS than the 4x charge loop, which in context of the video makes it irrelevant for DPS comparisons. The 4x charge loop still loses to wide in DPS, so any combos from Long that are lower DPS also deal lower DPS.
@ JinJinx and Tuna [Monster Hunter Math] Sorry if I just missed it, but did you mention anywhere that gunlance shelling deals a miniscule amount of fire damage, meaning shellings does a few damage more to Vaal Hazak than say Teostra?
I've seen people using taroth's bazel gunlance using wide poke shelling style with blast for AT Nergi TA Rules. Maybe wide poke shell is good with ailment infusion? Since it has pretty quick animation. While nonshell swing style just focus on damage and affinity, like joe's gunlance build. How about making a build for each style with different purpose?
Back then Wide was the charged shot lance and Long was for pure shelling They swapped them around in World So pure shelling has always been better than charged shot basicly
Capcom has been absolutely terrified of making shelling even remotely worth building towards since the gunlance's infancy. It's literally been a joke that in certain gens it was better to never even shell at all, damage wise. It's the main reason I switched to evade lance way back in the day. If I'm going to just poke, I may as well be nimble.
Lots of flaws with them talking about dps vs actual situations. Long shelling disregards a lot of issues that the other playstyles have. Long damage is consistent no matter where you hit the monster, only changes when you reach below green sharpness, fairly safe in recovery (which normal/swing lance are terrible at), and opens up other skills because it doesn't require much. I want to see someone use swing lance on a Tigrex or Barrioth. It's got annoyingly bad recovery
I am new to this weapon but from what I've seen it exists to end a swing lance combo or a 3 shell combo. Since wyernstake blast was added, it also factors into a combo albeit a high commitment one to set it off alongside wyernfire and regular shelling. The thing that confuses me right now is the indication on when it is ready. So basically I think that wyernstake blast is the opener that uses slinger ammo, and the original wyernstake alongside wyernfire + regular shells all deal defense ignoring damage that scales with artillery.
What about using long gunlances for full bursting? Like I have the royal burst and the anja GL, and I don't have optimal gear for anything but with the best i can like artil 3 and capac boost on the full burst combo I'm able to hit decently more on the anja GL than I can the Royal burst, but don't know how they stack up with meta and taking poison into account.
wait what. don't you need to build damage on a wide gunlance? wouldn't the lack of those damage skills mean that long gun lance has more skills to use thus making it more defensive?
Long is usually superior on monsters who have aoe effects. Wide is only clearly superior on small quicker monsters(Kirin) Wide is good on Bo and Nerg. But Long trips and staggers at a MUCH higher clip. Long is the safest. You can attack from SOOO far away. I can trip lock Kushala with Long, can't with Wide. You will keep getting knocked back with Wide. Wide shelling range is too damned short. Monsters are able to get away too easily making you miss a lot of the time. Wide looks amazing on paper but in reality, they basically push with Long. The range on Long shelling is insane. Kushala can't even fly high enough that you cannot hit it with long shells. Usually dropping him out of the sky for more free dps. I don't even have to flash him with Long. In conclusion, Wide is better than long on paper but not in practice. Lastly, health Regen is insane on long shelling.
Hello. I'm sorry but there is no proof of long ever being an optimal choice either on paper, or practice. For your Kushala argument, here are 2 videos of the top gunlance player using wide gunlance to trip lock Kushala, and kill him under 2 minutes, which long could never achieve due to its low DPS: 1'54 ruclips.net/video/tsEmZlHa7BA/видео.html 1'49 ruclips.net/video/GwH9pyEgs-c/видео.html Here's his AT Kushala run, where he used Slaplance and locked him down once again: 4'49 ruclips.net/video/bXOU6hK3gEc/видео.html I highly recommend watching his videos, and also CL ( ruclips.net/channel/UCd6gpVWTPGGVZ9dcKFawItw ), he's a hammer and gunlance main, and has some very creative runs. They are the 2 best GL players and you can learn a lot from watching their runs. I hope I have cleared things up, cheers!
@@XanMH1 Wide is high risk high reward. It is in no way safer than long shelling. I have seen speed runners do amazing thing with wide. But for 99% of players, long is the safer more consistent option. To me it's a peak vs attack boost argument. It's possible to trip lock with Wide, but it's FAR easier to do with long. I killed Kushala in 3 minutes(not even my best run) and I'm far from a speed runner. There's been more than one time when I ended the fight where I started it with long shelling. Bomb to start the fight and trip him. Keep shelling the head to keep him tripped until dead. That's a lot tougher to do with Wide(for a casual).
Xan pretty much covered what we were going to say. Specifically on the kushala arguement, the reason why long triplocks more easily is ironically because its dps is so much lower. The way flinches/trips work is if while the monster is down you deal enough damage to flinch again, it resets the counter to 0 without triggering the flinch. We call this "eating the glinch/trip" Wide when played super cleanly with META build can deal enough to trigger the flinch threshhold several tkmes ovet and still chaib. But un clean play on wide leaves a lil damage left over, probs someqhere sround 50% of thw way to the next trip. Long on the otherhand, despite having the 20% flinch bonus, will deal low enough damage to not overkill the next trip and will instead trigger it after kush gets up.
How on earth can you achieve shelling level 6 when the highest base shelling level is 4? Also have you run into an issue where capacity boost doesn’t increase the shelling level on your Gunlance? Ex: Kjarr Buster Spark has Long shelling lv 4 but when I put on capacity boost it stays lv 4
Thankfully I was able to obtain a wide 4 shelling gunlance from Kulve taroth. I still think it's pretty dumb that you can't craft a wide 4 gunlance on your own. When all the other shelling types can be crafted to their max level. Bazel/Luna should've had lvl 4 wide.
Hey Jinjinx and Tuna! Thanks for your effort. Could you please make a video about sword and shield? I am wondering whether I should just go with the Jho or build elemental Sets. I lack the knowledge for the maths. Thanks!
While Swinglance is the highest damage, it's not really...fun. Yeah, it shreds enemies up bad, but it's just one combo over and over, and it's a REALLY unsafe combo. Wide feels the most like regular lance, but with big periods between pokes, feels much safer overall, and it just feels much more unique, and it's not like you're completely closed off from a slap combo.
Nice in-depth guide about feasible gunlance playstyles, and I see no practical playstyle for Wyrmstake. The devs need to take a good hard look at the spreadsheets, realize that they're shit at balancing coolness with gameplay power level, and make an actual effort to balance the numbers. I hope the new Wyrmstake Blast move is worthwhile (although it essentially made the vanilla Wyrmstake Cannon a dud move).

Long gunlances can also make use of the fullo bursto combo which is good for pumping downed monsters with bad hitzone values full of deeps. Wide gunlances don't really have that option due to their sad little clip of 3 shells, poke shoot is all they are. If there will ever be a long 4 gunlance that also has amazing physical stats, it'll eclipse all the other lances because it could do the most damaging gunlance combo as well as full shelling. The best of both worlds.
@@charlescirio guard works by some impact thresholds that every attack have. Guard serves to reduce the impact and attacks usually with guard 1 is enough to negate all impact on most attacks but the heaviest ones where usually guard 3 also get affected, so there are a lot of situations where guard 1 is virtually equal to guard 3.

Go play Lance for a satisfying GUARDO-COUNTERTO
Imagine having a lance without the gun
But gunlance give me that visceral great sword feel
*watches at x2 speed*

Please do a video that covers the mathematically best gunlances for all the different types!
i can help but with out mathematically one, since it only consider lv 4 shelling and the types one (minus with their elementals or aligment inside)
This is part of their GL series which ends with the video you just described
for swing lance kulve poison/water or the jho one, for burst pink rathian or the kulve poison i think?, for wide 4 the kulve/bazel or the kulve water, and for long use the r6 kulve rathalos one since you're just gonna be using shells you can health augment it and don't care about raw.
YOU WOULD THINK THEY WERE GOING TO DO THAT BUT NO
Two questions, did you use training pole numbers for shelling damage or high rank shelling damage? How do the numbers look if you factor in the average time you can actually attack before you have to stop to block/hop?
With Wide Shelling, I've found Shell, Shell, Charged Shell quick reload makes a nice combo that let's me make a more defensive build.
Charging the 3rd avoids the wyrmstake? or do you take a pause to stop it?
@@francomattioda8155 charging avoids the wyrmstake. So you can keep applying the shelling damage. Which means the only skills needed are Artillery which frees up a lot of the build for Defensive and QoL skills. Artillery Charm + Magazine Jewel. Then any other skills you want.
Finally a Gunlance Video. Very well done guys! Please include wide 4s in the meta video. It will be hard (I have like 3 pages of GL builds, as each monster requires something different for max DPS) but I have faith you guys can do it :)
Can you please do a new gunlance analysis with the new expansion?
@10:54 still wrong on this. your 1st shell can be charged :D
forward triangle into hold circle immediately.

Yeah the Kjarr Bomber is very strong. It's the best general use wide gunlance now.
Is there updated tables for Iceborne?
A skill that let shells crit would be nice
Well we are getting the wyrmstake blast in iceborne.
they already bypass armor so probably not needed?
I remember back in MH4U how most GL players used Long shells and Wide was the least used.
Oh how times have changed.
I was thinking that
The silver rath gl
Back then Wide was the charged shot lance and Long was for pure shelling
They swapped them around in World
So pure shelling has always been better than charged shot basicly
Capcom has been absolutely terrified of making shelling even remotely worth building towards since the gunlance's infancy. It's literally been a joke that in certain gens it was better to never even shell at all, damage wise. It's the main reason I switched to evade lance way back in the day. If I'm going to just poke, I may as well be nimble.
We gonna get a meta build series?? Or nah?
Gun lance is my favorite weapon along side regular lance.
Love you guys!!!
I think they should bring back frame guard when shelling like mhp3rd or at least charge shot. It will make long shell more stronger
I just enjoy long gunlance guys.
Can anyone tell me why wyvernstake exists and when to use it?
Just want the meta builds now
Soooo...Does Normal Gunlance combo burst with 6 shells is good or it sucks?
(Sorry im stupid)
wait what. don't you need to build damage on a wide gunlance? wouldn't the lack of those damage skills mean that long gun lance has more skills to use thus making it more defensive?
Swing gunlance will safer with hop after side swing, when you lower damage but more safer
Long is usually superior on monsters who have aoe effects. Wide is only clearly superior on small quicker monsters(Kirin)
Wide is good on Bo and Nerg.
For your Kushala argument, here are 2 videos of the top gunlance player using wide gunlance to trip lock Kushala, and kill him under 2 minutes, which long could never achieve due to its low DPS:
1'54 ruclips.net/video/tsEmZlHa7BA/видео.html
1'49 ruclips.net/video/GwH9pyEgs-c/видео.html
Here's his AT Kushala run, where he used Slaplance and locked him down once again:
4'49 ruclips.net/video/bXOU6hK3gEc/видео.html
I highly recommend watching his videos, and also CL ( ruclips.net/channel/UCd6gpVWTPGGVZ9dcKFawItw ), he's a hammer and gunlance main, and has some very creative runs. They are the 2 best GL players and you can learn a lot from watching their runs.
I hope I have cleared things up, cheers!
@@XanMH1
Wide is high risk high reward.
Yeah, long shell is a functional and safe playstyle, there's no denying that.
We call this "eating the glinch/trip"
Wide when played super cleanly with META build can deal enough to trigger the flinch threshhold several tkmes ovet and still chaib.
Lv4 isn't the capacity it's the lvl of damage the shells do. If you have three shells you will have 4 with capacity boost
Thanx for the correction Jinx!!
He didn't tho.
Long players still up in arms to defend their shelling type.
Not the point of the hate. Jinx and Tuna videos are good on paper but heavily ignores what people like to do. NO ONE IS GOING TO USE SWINGLANCE.
@@tylercafe1260 The point is to educate what is the strongest, and spread knowledge about mechanics and how they're applied and in what they translate in numbers, they're not forcing anybody to use what's best. They're not judging other people not using "meta" equipment either.
Mathematically, Long is bad compared to the rest of the GL playstyle. That's a fact. I'm a Long user myself, and I know it. But I use it because I like it, not because I wrongly assume it's great.
Their video is simply spreading knowledge, people do what they want of it afterwards.
It's better to play what you like because you like it while knowing it may not be the best, rather use it while wrongly assuming it's better than what it is.
@@tylercafe1260 The point is WHICH ARE META AND DO THE MOST DAMAGE on a purely, factual, mathematical level. What your favorite playstyle is doesn't fucking matter.

Do the 2xShell + QR is that bad? I don't see you mention about it.
It is totally godwaful
Not only is very low damage compared with shell shell poke shell in a spreadsheet but also you face extreme recoil from the shells that makes you having to hop forward very often.
A poke moves you forward and makes you stay on place, there is a bit of recoil in shell shell poke shell and none in shell poke shell poke shell.
The secret is that poke shell poke takes almost as much time as shell shell and you are throwing a poke between, that can deal from 10 to 90 damage depending your build and the hitzone.
What's with the shtoil thing?
Its a weird way to say style.
I think they thought that's what comedy was.

I wonder if wyvern stake would be worth it if you could fast reload it.
And had a guard point lol
Long gunlances can also make use of the fullo bursto combo which is good for pumping downed monsters with bad hitzone values full of deeps.
Wide gunlances don't really have that option due to their sad little clip of 3 shells, poke shoot is all they are.
If there will ever be a long 4 gunlance that also has amazing physical stats, it'll eclipse all the other lances because it could do the most damaging gunlance combo as well as full shelling. The best of both worlds.

Try to priorize Evade Extender over guard on most matchups.
The bane of wide gunlance is the lack of reach and evade extender just fixes that.
Guard 5 is good for a very few monsters like jho, behemoth and kulve taroth that have common attacks where guard 3 gets pushed. In ATKT I consider guard 5 a must since trying to block the fire carpet with guard 3 gets your stammina sapped.
