THANK YOU!!! Thank you so much for doing this. This movie deserves the soundtrack from Tangerine Dream. I watched the Director's Cut last night and it was just...it lost it's magic. One day I hope we'll see the extended version with the Tangerine Dream Score.
I have the full musical score album - Tangerine Dream version - as well as the cut of the movie with their score. Can’t even listen to the Goldsmith score ugh.
Honestly it’s the best representation of sin. It’s beautiful and playful and the song makes it so innocent when it’s just spinning this web around her.
I have a similar feeling about Tim Curry's portrayal of Darkness/The Devil in this film; He's equally terrifying and seductive, repulsive and alluring. He makes you want run away from him, yet run towards him at the same time.
The black gown or the white? Both are beautiful. I've always looooved that black one though. Goth Lilly is a beautiful look. I used to pretend I was her holding up that necklace from the jewellery box when I was little. Would play out this whole scene. The one with the Unicorns too. This was, and still is my FAVORITE MOVIE EVER!!!!!
It would have to be someone tall and slender because I swear ... if I see another stout chick with ninja turtle calves in something like this I'm gonna be pissed
After Lili ends her dance, she peeks at her darkly beautiful self in the mirror, and she cannot help a dramatic pose, I love how Darkness makes his entrance with a similar dramatic pose.
0 dislikes. Thats because it doesn't matter whether you love or hate this movie, you can't deny how beautiful and well done this scene is. It hypnotizes me every time.
My favorite dance scene ever... hypnotically beautiful. I periodically watch this and sway back and forth as if I'm dancing 💃... ❤❤❤ Her and Tim Curry made this movie. Perfect casting choices.
I don't consider myself necessarily 'sophisticated' but I do know what's good. I've seen plenty of footage of 'unsophisticated' Europeans. And actually, that Tangerine Dream soundtrack is extremely rare and very expensive even if you do happen to find it. I think it must have something to do with copyrights.
azbacnikorange Did all those instruments exist altogether in the exact same times in the exact same places? I doubt it. Not that any of it matters, anyhow, as this movie doesn't even take place in the real world, making all charges of anachronism pointless.
The symbolism alone in this scene was awesome to say the least... subtle but sprinkled with obvious hints. Great movie... when imagination trumped CGI and special effects --- or affects. Somebody correct me!!!!
Ahhh... I've seen this extended version before and still notice that it's missing something ...I couldn't put my finger on it before but now I know exactly what it is ... its missing the flash at the point of transformation when she accepts the dress ... that part I think helps make the scene ... I believe the flash is caused by the friction between light and dark .. 2 separate energies colliding with one another causing a visible spark that begins from the darkest of shadows but even outshines light itself ... that flash is vital because in this movie light and dark hate each other with a passion so the flash is a common ground that allowed light to submit lili to darkness due to her decision in giving in to the temptations of darkness ... similar to a boarding sub-station ... had there been no flash lili would've been torn apart.
4:26 That was scary watching the Lord of Darkness come through the mirror like that, while Lilly was looking at herself. I think she was supposed to be under a spell or something. But she was still nervous, which meant whatever the Lord of Darkness did, it didn't effect her the way he thought it would.
I watched this movie numerous times throughout my childhood and was always taken with the beautiful imagery and completely enchanted with the music. I am now an adult and still love the magic this movie enlivens. Thank you for posting this; I agree with you about the score; Tangerine Dream's score makes this scene and the movie successful. I have watched the other version and it just doesn't hold the appeal that this one does. Great comment Frostflame29!
This has always been my absolute favorite scene in this movie. Ever since I was a kid, I thought the dancing dress was so beautiful and elegant, and I've always wanted it. I watched the director's cut with Goldsmith's score, and this scene just didn't have the allure that Tangerine Dream gave it. I watched the American theatrical cut first, and it will always be the best in my opinion.
I love this so incredibly much. One of the best things to come of my childhood. Although, up until I was about 8, the Lord of Darkness scared the shit out of me.
This was one of my favorite scenes when I watched this movie as a kid. That music just grabs you and you want to twirl with Lili. Thanks for post it.👍👏❤

I’ve discovered that some versions of the moviedo not get the music to this scene correct, or as I remembered originally. THIS IS IT! Thank you for confirming my reality:)
It is wild how much the Tangerine Dream soundtrack makes a difference. Sets the tone of the whole movie. I was raised on the Tangerine dream version and then later watched the version with the other soundtrack and was so confused and put off by it. Later found out there were some marketing differences in the UK and the U.S…The use of synth also feels reminiscent of vangelis doing the soundtrack for Blade Runner. Also really sets the tone. Love Ridley Scott! I’m here because I’m re-examining all of his old work after seeing Gladiator 2. Wasn’t super into it, even though I love all of the people who contributed to it. Just needed a reminder of why I adore him so much.
Ohhhh....the Tangerine Dream score is SOOOOOO muc better than the Goldsmith. Goldsmith is good, too, I liked some of the other scenes with his music, but I have been in love with this song since I saw the movie back when I was fairly small. This song is magic. I wish they hadn't edited this scene and Tangerine Dream had made a longer song out of this
The Goldsmith score is somewhat softer and more subtle than the commanding TD version, sometimes TOO subtle. The scene where Jack apologizes to the mare is lacking emotion without TD's unicorn theme, but I liked how Goldsmith left Lili's search for Jack in the forest silent, even though I love the song TD had for the forest, the silence made it more menacing. The scene that you have to watch of Goldsmith is where Lili meets the unicorn and, just like all the old stories about the unicorn capture, she tames it with song...that scene is definitely worth it
I don't know, it should...I think the blu ray on amazon is the same as the ultimate edition dvd I have. the one with the Goldsmith is called the director's cut
The best visualization of sin in all of cinematic history. It starts by watching. Then next you are part of the dance. Then you barely recognize yourself because you have become the dancer. And then are we really surprised who comes to see our dance?
I love the Tangerine Dream score version. I love the vision and beauty that went into this. There's nothing that attracts me about "evil". It's always about the height of emotion, which can be beautiful all by itself. Thank you for leaving this up. It's one of the most epic parts of the movie.
Perfect! I agree, Thank you for preserving/editing the best part of the whole movie! Whole-heartedly agree: "However, the dancing dress scene works much better with the Tangerine Dream score that was released in the United States in 1985. The European version is much longer, but the US release's Tangerine Dream score is superior... "
I tried telling my daughter about this movie. SHES 15 and has never seen it.We went to watch it and I didnt know what had happened. Everything was different. The enchanment and magic had been replaced with something kidsy and cheesy and corny and boring. I didnt know they had changed it and took out the score and sound and changed scenes some. But it so drastically and tragically affected the quality of the movie. THIS IS THE VERSION I WANTED HER TO SEE. THIS IS THE QUINTESSENTIAL VERSION.
Made with love, I can see. Thank you! :-) I also wish that the film had that incredible dance scene--and Darkness' entry--with a longer, Tangerine Dream score. :-)
Thank you for posting this! The Tangerine Dream score is definitely far superior to the Goldsmith score (that could just be because the Tangerine Dream version was the first I had ever seen as a child) but the Goldsmith version ruins it for me, it's just not the same hahah (:
To Michael Delving. Oh! For a moment I thought the one other person was trying to talk about if this scene had been with a different score. I wouldn't even liked if it wasn't neat to listen to if I saw that scene without the goldsmith scene.
This part of the movie is showing innocent and evil in one moment and showing the lust of Darkness wanting her so bad and giving her sparkling gems and a wedding dress of his choice
Thank you so much for doing this! I too think that European version of the film is better but dislike Jerry Goldsmith's score. Tangerine Dream all the way! If I had the time and patience I would make a fan version of the film that uses the European version with Tangerine Dream's score. My favorite part of the European version is the fact that they do not show The Prince of Darkness til much later in the film, which I think gives him a much more dramatic entrance than showing him right off the bat. Plus Lily and Jack do not kiss til the end of the movie in the European version which I think gives that final scene much more impact
Saw this video for the first time the other day, and I'm watching Legend tonight. I paused it about 1:00 into this scene and decided to come here and watch this version instead. Far superior; thank you! Now back to the movie!
i remember watching this movie with my mom's vhs copy. this was my absolute favorite part. i would dance around my bedroom like mia did along with her over and over lmao
One of my all time favorite scenes in a movie. it is PERFECT Shadow Self symbology. Thank you for remixing this. I bought the Bluray specifically to use THIS scene in a class I teach not knowing they changed the soundtrack, and though I liked having the additional footage, I did NOT like the Goldsmith song here. It just doesnt give you the same emotional impact AT ALL. Watch both versions back to back, the one with Tangerine Dream and the one with Goldsmith and you can see how very much the tone of the movie is impacted by the score!
Amusingly, I like the goldsmith songs just about everywhere BUT here. Here it seems hypnotic and illusion-like, the goldsmith dancing dress scene lost that.
I'm guessing the dancing dress is symbolic of darkness, greed, etc enchanting her to give in just the same as when she was looking at the jewels that force was simply more covert until it was personified in the dress. Is there something that you're understanding in this scene that I'm not seeing?
The 80's was the grand opera of mankind's existence in cinematic originality and music - timeless and enchanting this score is - it personified the scene in exemplary fashion and mystique ....... I had the luxury of growing up as a child in the 80's and I cannot be more articulate on the accomplished marvels of the decade in cinema and music. The 80's is The Legend!
At Last! I have tried to buy this version on dvd and failed but now I have this and I am truly grateful! Thank you so much Michael Delving for posting this clip. I am complete!!
Best scene in the movie by a light year. Can't tell you how much this effected me as a youth. The combination of music, dance, lighting and implication is masterful.
this scene has always been my favorite one out of the entire movie, it's also the only part that stayed with me when i was younger, it left such an impression of me when i was so small. i couldn't remember the name of the movie but i would keep insisting to my family that the movie was real and keep telling them about his scene "you know the movie with the princess and the unicorn, the one with the black dress that is dancing and then the princess is wearing the dress, THAT movie!! that was he one we saw!! she was so pretty, the dress i mean well the princess too but the dance was REALLY pretty!!" My family had no clue what i was talking about until we saw the movie in a Walmart bin and pulled it out and shoved the movie into their faces and said "this!! this is the movie i kept telling you about all those years ago this one!!!" I was soooooo young when we fist saw this movie i think i had just barley turned 4 or 5, ahh the nostalgia of it all, oh and we bought the movie lol XD
Thank you for this, although I somewhat miss the part where the dark dancer hugs Lilly and there is a blue flash and then she changes, it's only a couple of seconds difference but I feel those seconds made a difference.
Thank you for putting this together! TD’s score enhances the otherworldliness/mystery/magic of the setting for me. I find the orchestral score is too familiar & basic to build a powerful mood, so much so that the movie is mostly unwatchable with it. This dance is one of my favourite scenes in film. Not only is it stunning, captivating, hypnotic etc., it quickly & effectively shows half the process of her seduction through action (2min, 20sec). Had Darkness simply tried convincing her of his world view via dialogue (yawn) the film would have lost a great deal of magic And now, Lily looks evil! It would have been clumsy had Darkness simply given her the dress & then we see her wearing it in the following scene c/w make up. Great story telling!
For the life of me, I CAN'T understand how anybody could think the Goldsmith score is better than the Tangerine Dream one. The UNICORN theme that Tangerine dream produced MADE this movie. It's the theme the gives this movie LIFE. Just watch the scene when're Jack goes to ask for forgiveness from the unicorn and compare the 2. The tangerine score can bring you to tears while the Goldsmith score does nothing. I have nothing against Goldsmith but his score does not fit this movie. It's bland and generic and doesn't fit. AND THAT'S THE TRUTH. NO ROOM FOR DEBATE. IT'S THE FACT!
Yeah, but in that scene...Goldshmit it hundred times better. The way the dark dancer moves, FITS with the arrange, the rhythm...It was clearly done for THIS scene, the dancer was dancing HIS music lol This one, from Tangerine, is slow and boring. Feels like one of those fan made music videos where you just edit with some music you like.
ja, is true...exactly like a fanmade video...but however the song fits or not in this particular scene, the tangerine dream song is fucking beautiful is like medieval meets the 80´s, but the jerry goldsmith it´s totally been made for this scene, the moves and the pauses fits perfectly the tones of that song, even if it´s a little bit disney goes dark sound like.....i do prefer the goldsmith....and dont forget about the backround sounds, in this one you can hear the abrupt cut of the music , till the next scene comes, toooo fan made for me!!!....and in the goldsmith´s the brackround sound and the song becomes one..itself.sincronyzing each other
Cmel F. I think the tangerine dream score gives the film a more.magical.and dreamlike feel - there is nothing about the goldsmith score that sets the spine tingling. I wish they would re release the theatrical version but they won't because RS doesn't understand what is good in his own movies.
Totally agree! The Tangerine Dream version of the scene where Jack asks forgiveness is so moving, and brings me to tears every time. Beautifully done. The Goldsmith score does not even compare.
OMG. I'd just seen Legend again the other evening for the first time in a few years so this scene is fresher in my mind and I completely notice the parts in this video that are not in the US edit. Why on earth would they have taken those beautiful parts out - ever? They add so much to it. Wow. But def the Tangerine Dream score is far better. I don't even understand why they'd have had a different score made for another release. Thanks for making this. I wish the resolution was higher, but it's still great to see it like this. Thank you.
ive loved this since i was a little girl with a beta deck at my grandmas house, i have the temptress tattooed on my arm :) one of my favorite scenes ever
i was just watching the directors cut and lamenting about this scene. Thank you so much for doing this, now I can watch the rest of the movie lol. I love the tangerine dream soundtrack for this movie so much more, but I really wish they had managed to make it work with the full directors cut
I love this dance scene :) I remember watching this movie as a kid, and I loved her evil dress LOL I love that she loses herself in this seduction dance
This dance music was hypnotic. The other two versions (director's cut and European) just don't rise to this quality. Luckily I still have an old VHS version because I can't find it on CD.
I had to travel to New York and purchase mine out of the universal store near planet hollywood in NYC which at the time held the rights to the movie. That was back in 2006 though.
THANK YOU!!! Thank you so much for doing this. This movie deserves the soundtrack from Tangerine Dream. I watched the Director's Cut last night and it was just...it lost it's magic. One day I hope we'll see the extended version with the Tangerine Dream Score.
By far one of the most under rated movies in existence. The Goldsmith score was simply and truly awful, I'm not sure what anyone was thinking?????
I had the cut with this song on it, shame I lost it over the years of moving :/ this is my absolute favorite movie, right next to the Last Unicorn
Very true. Best version of this scene.
I have the full musical score album - Tangerine Dream version - as well as the cut of the movie with their score. Can’t even listen to the Goldsmith score ugh.
I bought it on dvd hoping for the tangerine dream score but nothing... it was so upsetting
I really like how the 80s knew how to make things look creepy yet still beautiful. No cgi overload.
Missing those days
@Aung Ramen not dying, it has been dead for some time now
Couldn’t have said this better myself.
Yes, died out...alongside creativity and talent. The 80s was the last decade of true fantastic cinema
This movie was 3 years before CGI existed.
Honestly it’s the best representation of sin. It’s beautiful and playful and the song makes it so innocent when it’s just spinning this web around her.
👏a very poetic way to put it, and yes I agree
I have a similar feeling about Tim Curry's portrayal of Darkness/The Devil in this film; He's equally terrifying and seductive, repulsive and alluring. He makes you want run away from him, yet run towards him at the same time.

Never has the seductiveness and hypnotic power of evil been more convincingly portrayed.
Yeeesss! Weaknesses exploited--her noble lineage/accustomed to wealth/finer things (jewelry, luxuries)-- "sold herself to the devil".
For sure
Thats how evil is suppose to be portrayed, sweet, seductive, beautiful
I know right, the way they did this was incredible I don't get how more don't see it that way.
So tell me... have you ever danced with the devil?!

That dress silhouette would be one awesome cosplay.

The dress dance scene with Tangerine Dream score was hauntingly beautiful.

azbacnikorange Goldsmith's score is no less "anachronistic" than Tangerine Dream's, which isn't "pop" in any definition of the word.
azbacnikorange You do know that Tangerine Dream are European, don’t you? and calling them “synth pop”… I cannot take you seriously, I’m sorry.
azbacnikorange Did all those instruments exist altogether in the exact same times in the exact same places? I doubt it.
Not that any of it matters, anyhow, as this movie doesn't even take place in the real world, making all charges of anachronism pointless.
I liked both for different reasons. in the darker scenes the Tangerine Dream fitted in wonderfully, however here it doesn't quite fit.
The brief glimpses of the living statue is sooooooo perfect in it's creepiness. 🔥🎃🔥

Couldn't agree more, DJ Lishus!
The dress honestly scared me as a kid but now I understand what was going on in the movie
That is much better... bravo! director wins this round...
Only took me 44 yrs to realize what this meant. I understand now. 😮❤
One of the greatest fantasy scenes of all times in a film. Captivating, beautiful, dark, surreal, and seductive. Lilly's glance at 4.17 is stunning
This and the labyrinth are among my favorite childhood movies! Thank you for posting this!
Love this scene! Now here's my quote for the night: "DANCING WITH A PHANTOM DRESS IS NOT A GOOD IDEA!!"
Why
Why it is beautiful at the night
I cant accurately describe how I feel when I see this. I have loved this scene and been mesmerized by it since I was 4 years old ❤
this scene has always been my favorite one out of the entire movie, it's also the only part that stayed with me when i was younger, it left such an impression of me when i was so small.
i couldn't remember the name of the movie but i would keep insisting to my family that the movie was real and keep telling them about his scene
"you know the movie with the princess and the unicorn, the one with the black dress that is dancing and then the princess is wearing the dress, THAT movie!! that was he one we saw!! she was so pretty, the dress i mean well the princess too but the dance was REALLY pretty!!"
My family had no clue what i was talking about until we saw the movie in a Walmart bin and pulled it out and shoved the movie into their faces and said "this!! this is the movie i kept telling you about all those years ago this one!!!"
I was soooooo young when we fist saw this movie i think i had just barley turned 4 or 5, ahh the nostalgia of it all, oh and we bought the movie lol XD
The pure artistry and detail put in to the makeup, scenery, and costume design is phenomenal!
Had Darkness simply tried convincing her of his world view via dialogue (yawn) the film would have lost a great deal of magic
And now, Lily looks evil!
I completely agree
Yeah, but in that scene...Goldshmit it hundred times better. The way the dark dancer moves, FITS with the arrange, the rhythm...It was clearly done for THIS scene, the dancer was dancing HIS music lol
This one, from Tangerine, is slow and boring.
Thank you.
Yes, and Yes..... TD, and I hate 'editing' .....
Very underrated.
Thank you for posting this.
ive loved this since i was a little girl with a beta deck at my grandmas house, i have the temptress tattooed on my arm :) one of my favorite scenes ever
Thank you for posting.
The Tangerine Dream version is so much more enthralling.
i was just watching the directors cut and lamenting about this scene.
Samus Aran really you love that she loses herself in the seduction dance It's supposed to be evil thing
But, that was the purpose/point. That's how evil works...
Me too
Same!
This move had such stunning sets
I kinda like it better with this music instead of the original.
Me too.
vashthestampede1132 thank goodness I’m not the only one lol
This dance music was hypnotic. The other two versions (director's cut and European) just don't rise to this quality. Luckily I still have an old VHS version because I can't find it on CD.
I always get annoyed when I see this scene and it's the version with the non-Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
Same here
I thought the same thing also, but its still greatly appreciated!
Running from darkness, poetry at is it's best.
STILL TRYING TO LOOK FOR THE ORIGINAL EDITION... THIS ONE... Every outlet I've looked under only carriers the newer edited versions. HELP PLEASE!
I had to travel to New York and purchase mine out of the universal store near planet hollywood in NYC which at the time held the rights to the movie. That was back in 2006 though.
shoot i didn't think of that... i went to new york two weeks ago...
You may try their online shop on the universal website. Figure out which version through wiki and go from there. Goodluck!
This is the Theatrical version. The directors cut is terrible.
Got that shit on VHS
Thank you for posting this. One of my all time favorite movies as a kid, even though some of the imagery gave me chills back in the '80's,LOL
I have strong nostalgic feelings for the TD version, and the Bryan ferry closing credits song. Shows a decent Zelda film would be possible:-)
This is my favorite part in the movie it just goes to show how tantalizing and tempting things can be .
