From a liturgical expert: This is not a hymn, though it is indeed Christian. Both priests are singing (in Romanian) short excerpts from standard liturgical prayers. Here are correct translations: The lower-voiced priest sings: "The Lord said to His disciples: I give you a new commandment" (John 13:34) The higher-voiced priest sings from the Triple Litany of Supplication (said during Holy Week, similar to the Good Friday intercessions of the Catholic and Anglican/Episcopal churches): [To God] we pray for mercy, life, peace, health, salvation, examination, and the forgiveness of sins for the servants of God: worshippers, charity-givers, and well-doers of this holy church." The captions misspell "mantuirea", and the inclusion of "worshippers and charity-givers" replaces the Romanian original of "parishioners and builders" (enoriasi, ctitori), which may be intentional, since Pook created this piece specifically for Kubrick and most likely approached Romanian Orthodox priests to make her own recording of them, rather than using an existing recording which might not have had the correct acoustic or microphones appropriate for her intended use. I point this out because it is one more way in which the text appears to have been altered slightly to place more of an emphasis on money, which would fit entirely within Kubrick's intention for this scene of ostentatious wealth. Some have suggested in their comments that they feel this is intended as a mockery or a "Black Mass". I believe that Kubrick's intent was not necessarily to mock, but more to create an emphatically foreign liturgy. These are real priests singing real liturgy (a realism that is hard for actors to duplicate), but it's in a language most of the people seeing this movie would not recognize, and it's played backward to make sure that even those who speak Romanian or know the Romanian Orthodox liturgy would find it foreign.

Bulgaria and large portion of Romania were once one. The Bulgarian alphabet(Cyrillic) and language(Church Slavonic) were not only liturgical but official in the princedoms of Wallachia and Moldavia for centuries, before gradually being replaced by the Latin-based alphabet in the 19th century and the Romanian language in the 17th century borrowing many words from French as well as from Latin and Italian, in order to acquire the lexical tools necessary for modernization. Many romanians and bulgarians share the same names, we're both Orthodox, share many traditions and were both under the Ottoman empire for centuries.

@@patriciaidoyagaguzman6630 there could be multiple possible answers. I think in this case, Kubrick might have heard that occultists will often reverse or invert good things to make them evil. I'm guessing that its sung backwards in the movie as the occult inverts and distorts the liturgy.

A masterpiece. Having Cruise and Kidman in this one was genius. Should go down in history as a classic ❤
The tension of having a real life husband and wife playing a real life husband and wife and the themes of infidelity definitely sold the scenes
Romanian chants and Italian rituals with their costumes makes Christianity so mystical, powerful, different from other cults like it`s out of this world..
the epic latin vibe, i agree. It can be light like a choir, or intense and serious and epic, with gothic architecture and colorful robes. I was expecting to talk more about it, but all i can compare it to is Greek pagan vibes. Latin style modern religion is probably the most dramatic and somber/creepy vibe sometimes while also being some of the purest, they know to build in everything to give the feeling of weight of a presence, and also bringing you closer to a trance state= out of this world
This is about the mutiny of Satan and what became *his* apprentices, all of which fell for NOT obeying God's command.

King Charles III related to Vlad The Impala (Dracula) in Transylvania- Romania. One of his favourite places in the world Viscri.
That piece is not related to Vlad the Impaler!
Vlad the Impala...drove a Chevy into battle.
At first I Thought this would be another one of Lucy’s clubs but it turns out to be somewhat of a grey mass for them. Theres no Morningstar and no cross so what do we call these people ,middle ground but ofc there’s no middle ground only in there eyes at least.
A woman sacrificing her own life. It really impressed me. Frankly, I would like to meet the people who star in this movie. God help you.
Were red clock and secret society and Nick playing those vocals in the ceremony, or is it just meant to be a mood-setting soundscape for the viewer? Is there a person chanting and another singing among the crowd? Is it an audio sample played by Nick Nightingale on the electric keyboard?
I thought i was the only one trying to picture the logistics of this hahaha
They show an mpc sampler in Nick's setup so I think Kubrick actually intended for this to be what Nick is playing
the society was playing the reversed speech intentionally.
@@niccoloaurelius1587why do they do it in reverse??
@@patriciaidoyagaguzman6630 there could be multiple possible answers. I think in this case, Kubrick might have heard that occultists will often reverse or invert good things to make them evil. For instance, the cross gets inverted, the pentagram that points upward gets turned so that horns are up by Satanists, etc. I don't think in real life, an occult society akin to this one would do such things (as they are probably seen as the conceptions of outsiders rather than those in the know), but maybe some would.
Thank for this

this was cool! the song and scene itself seemed much less creepy to me, maybe that's because i was able to read the lyrics too. i'm guessing the song played backwards implies some anti christian sentiment of the group?
Yes, it resembles a satanic black mass. The song is an Orthodox Romanian prayer I think.
Yes
The actual priest's voice sounds pretty bright if it is played in right order. Otherwise than the film soundtrack. Maybe because of the more natural intonation

Okay we get it but do you have to repeat it umpteenth times ? I mean even eerie and bizarre can get boring if you do so. I never saw what the controversy is with this movie or proceedings. As I stated on other threads my interpretations of Kubrick’s most controversial works , A Clockwork Orange and Eyes wide Shut , are less arcane than most people . Eyes Wide Shut for me is about venturing off your life’s trail comfort zone into the deep woods because you are bored with the same old hike. Subsequently you run into something that made you wish you would have stayed on your path .
That’s because your eyes are wide shut, literally.
What's this ritual shown in the film means? I didn't understand. Is this about secret societies like illuminati? Anyone please explain 🙏
