For the life of me, I CAN'T understand how anybody could think the Goldsmith score is better than the Tangerine Dream one. The UNICORN theme that Tangerine dream produced MADE this movie. It's the theme the gives this movie LIFE. Just watch the scene when're Jack goes to ask for forgiveness from the unicorn and compare the 2. The tangerine score can bring you to tears while the Goldsmith score does nothing. I have nothing against Goldsmith but his score does not fit this movie. It's bland and generic and doesn't fit. AND THAT'S THE TRUTH. NO ROOM FOR DEBATE. IT'S THE FACT!
I think it might have to do with what version was watched first. I was born in 85, so as a young girl Legend was my BIBLE. I saw the tangerine dream version first and could not fathom the thought of watching it without it however, I am now 30 and I think both are great, even though I am a little tangerine dream biased. They made a helluva soundtrack for this film and if Ridley would have left it alone, I think it would have done better.
My 21 year old daughter grew up watching Legend with the TD music....and she just refuses to watch the Goldsmith version....in her modern day speak 'it's so CRINGE'. The other night she made her younger sister watch the youtube clips of the Goldsmith version of the Unicorn scene and the Dancing dress scene....and both again said that the Goldsmith version lack soul...and could have been the orchestral soundtrack to any old film! Yet the ''professional'' would have us believe this TD version is the inferior version! Pah! what do they know!
Yes you are absolutely correct. Nothing compares to the Tangerine Dream score. The movie wouldnt have been what it was without them. In my memory from watching this as a kid, all i can remember was how the music made me feel and why i still find it so relaxing and enticing. Tremendous music.
I'm not a fan of Scott but I will say that Legend is one of two things in his career he's done right (the other being Aliens). That said, this IS truly a beautiful piece.
Syphon Filter Well, you should thank the people who forced or recommended that he use Tangerine Dream for the US release. Apparently, Scott was against using Tangerine Dream for some reason. Tangerine Dream's score wipes the floor with Goldsmith. Goldsmith's score just wasn't suited for this particular fantasy, Tangerine Dream was perfect.
dreampopmusic It depends man. I like both scores. Goldsmith's score DOES suit a more "traditional" fantasy feel but that's the thing: What made Legend so cool was that broke from several established fantasy norms in film and one of them was the Tangerine Dream soundtrack which suits the ethereal feel of the film far better. Either one works but I prefer the TD score.
3:02 - 3:35 - I tear up during this part, because I remember the scene this comes from. Always makes me cry, every single time. Such a sad, but visually beautiful, scene. :(
Throwing this into a DND campaign would make certain instances so much better.. you should check out aether essence music of Mana.. into the thick of it would probably have to be my favorite track right now..
It also includes an enchanting slow rock beat of 'Loved by the Sun' in what sounds like it's being reversed. They also do their own change up of the song of 'The Unicorn Theme' by adding lyrics to it. You won't be disappointed, this is a rare version of the soundtrack that only a limited number of cds were released to the public b/c of the high demand for their music. They then took their score & music & put it on cds & made a few thousand of these soundtracks for the general public to keep.
This takes me way back to the days of Willow, The Goonies, The Labyrinth, Disney's Robin Hood, Unico...I could go on all day. *sigh* :) I just listened to this 10 consecutive times and had the best stretch session. The whole time I was reminiscing of when I wanted to be Lilly; The idea of running through an enchanted forest with such a beautiful dress on was SO longed for. Thank you for posting, mrsparkle. :)
I love everything about this movie and the especially the sound track. Timeless, eternal and epic, I must say it stands as a true masterpiece of legend, myth and the underlying themes of that timeless battle.... light and dark, good and evil, love and hate.
This has to be my absolute favorite fantasy movie ever. I love the classic battles between Light and Dark, Good versus Evil. Especially the ones where Light and Love win in the end. ❤️
An inspirational score for fidelity, peace, and harmony amalgamated with eternal happiness!!! An emotive timeless masterpiece that incessantly holds steadfast in my life since my childhood ..... since seeing the film and listening to the scores in the late 80's .... I have always felt that the pinnacle of the cinema world's endeavors to couple great musical brilliance and originality in cinema is largely exemplified from the best decade ever - the 80's - the epitome of all children's dreams!!!
I'll always remember when Tangerine Dream played this piece of music live as the 1st encore of the Montréal PDA on their tour in 1986... I was blown away... I hadn't seen the film at that time and didn't know it's origin until a friend of mine who was attending the concert along my side told me he had seen the film and was blown away by it... To see and hear Edgar, Chris and Paul on their keyboards along with the wonderful light show just sent chills up my spine...
This song (as most of Tangerine Dream songs do ) literally gives me butterflies and sends like like a shivering type of sensation over my body every time I hear it.
Fabulous job editing the song at the cutoff. I, too, have always disliked the fact that the song had to cut off too soon. Now, I can enjoy the full score, thanks to you! I heard Ridley Scott wasn't fond of Tangerine Dream's score to Legend, but I could never understand why.
This is the most beautiful and relaxing video. The movie takes me waaaay back. I get lost in my own magical world when I watch it or hear the music from it. I remember putting on an old VHS movie that started with Legend and had the music going but it cut into Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. So I laugh once in a while when I watch Legend. I always think of that at first. Thank you for the upload!!!!!!!
I have the entire album of music (T Dream version) it's a pretty rare album but I think I found it by searching online. It has this track in it's proper full length. :) All of the music is so incredible.
I subscribed to your channel because of the lets watch goldenboy and i have to say that this video caught me off guard. Which sort of rocks cause Legend rocks and its music was badass. Thanks!!!!
Am I the only one who can see movement? Wow! I didn't realize that there were people out there. Who this movie grabbed a hold of like this. Glad to know you all are out there. Thought I was alone.
This will always be my most favorite movie. And the song...... Top notch best is my eyes. 😌💜🧚💙🌼💛🦄🤍☀️♥️🎶♾️ Poor Lily. Used as a pawn against two creatures. One that coveted her and the other that nievely did not protect her until it was to late. Thankfully the light ruled out in the end as well as true love. Thank goodness Jack finally woke up and was able to save her and their world. 😍🥰
I also would get the soundtrack of 'The Last Unicorn' if I were you. It was made in Germany. The music is exactly like in the movie. The same makers of The Hobbit did the movie and it is an anime but very good for its time. This is where I believe the movie 'Legend' and 'The Last Unicorn' go hand-in-hand.
It is very hard to top Tangerine Dream , especially for soundtracks. I'm not to sure of the decision making to go from Goldsmith to Tangerine Dream for the U.S. cut, but it seems to have been the correct move. I saw Legend in the theater when it came out, and the soundtrack was one of the positive standout features of the movie, along with the cinematography and the fantastic makeups and costumes..
Ridley Scott originally had Jerry Goldsmith do the score, but it wasn't popular in the US, so he changed bits of the movie around and got Tangerine Dream to do the score. If you get the DVD, the director's cut is on it. I personally like the directors cut movie, but I prefer the score by Tangerine Dream
Sarah Wade If Ridley would've combined T Dream's music with Jerry Gold smith's with his extended version, I would've liked it better too. Even though in other movies J Gold smith's scores are used perfectly with every scene. Too bad he's passed on, but we do now have some good replacement composers that are almost as good, imo
Is this in the right order? I feel like the first part is an extended version of what plays at the end when restoring the unicorn horn. But after about 3:52, that music was used near the beginning when Jack first meets Lily and footage of them kissing (from the end of the Director's Cut) is shown in reverse with a dissolve to the sky. Unless this is in the right order and the music was chopped up to fit parts of the US cut.
The original score soundtrack on vinyl costs hundreds now, it's really rare. I went to a Faith No More concert and they opened with this theme, was surprising and brilliant.
Absolutely beautiful. I wish there was a full high quality version of this.. It's just gonna have to do. I can't get enough of it. At 5:15 thats when it really gets mystical. My childhood is so good right now. My mother used to watch this with me when I was younger.
Definitely synthesized, but your closest would be the orchestral low flute, I believe they're called, or the Ocarina would give you the nuances they're mimicking with pitch bending. I'd give those a shot. If you like this you need to go find Yanni right now, trust me. Even though it's more organic sounding I still listen to his one of his albums on repeat today, "In My Time" but he has more upbeat and synthesized approaches like "Truth of Touch". Some of them have that big fantasy vibe, too. I can just imagine a movie like this to "Voyage" by Yanni. We need more big budget fantasy films that aren't completely directed at young teens.
Im probably spelling it wrong..but its a synthesized sakuhachi..a japanese instrument..if you like that sound id highly recommend the song by enigma called " sadness" .i love the sound as well
Btw i kno youre getting different responses but im 99.9% that its a sakuhachi and i believe i read somewhere it was indeed the instrument used. And the song i mentioned also uses one .it sounds amazing.hope this helped
Thanks for the upload, beautiful track that I included on our wedding DVD. But sorry, this is not complete because the last few seconds are missing, when it is brought to a logical ending instead of fading out. Listen to any live version and you can hear the full ending.
And for everyone's information, there ARE unicorns for real but they look nothing like horses. They are small brown deer-like creatures with a small backward-curving horn. They found some recessive trait in these deer or whatever they are and bred them for that trait and now they produced more and more of them. They're not that extravagant as I would have thought, but so there are unicorns which is neat.
Like the waves of brilliance that is exemplified & personified in the score as if from Heaven - Tangerine Dream is Eternal Praise and Wisdom in and of their musical works of genius. I'm 33 and grew up with Vangelis and Tangerine Dream. I find peace and pensive prosperity in these musical wonders that both have brought into the scope of things both in cinema soundtracks and individual albums an immaculate capturing of timeless glory. Tangerine Dream/Vangelis - keep my heart whole. Thank You!
For those of you wondering if there is a complete soundtrack of Legend with the score in its entirty by Tangerine Dream, there definitely is one. It is definitely not a bootleg, it's the real thing w/artwork and the whole nine yards. You can only find this audio cd soundtrack on iofferdotcom. It runs thirty seven dollars at least, but it's worth the price. Every single score and song is on this cd & in full. There are only so many of these cds available & will run out soon.
So beautiful 🥰... Loved by the Sun. Merry Christmas 2020. I walked out into the Sun this afternoon at the Lake. Trees blowing beautiful wind. Led right to a spot. I looked into the forest. I saw Red Cardinals. God is Good.
I am currently looking for a cd, record, or cassette tape with the entire score/music for The Neverending Story but am having the darnest time coming up with good results. "The Ivory Tower" and 'Swamp of Sadness" is the hardest score to obtain b/c they may have only done a short piece for the movie, but I have faith they have some track lying around w/the entire score on it in case they had decided to use it all in the movie. Firestarter was expensive as well.
always loved that music (in the 2nd half of the track) There is an expanded bootleg of Tangerine Dreams' score which has the full 7min version of this track but the sound quality (mono) isn't as good as the 'edited in' (stereo) version from the film as you've done here,
@Mastermage78 maybe you can get the film soundtrack second hand i have it on old Casett tape i got about 5 years ago at a car bootsale for next to nothing also the song is called Loved by the sun
How did I do it? I took the incomplete version and added the last 2 minutes or so of a bootleg version I have. Yes, bootlegs exist, and they exist because the original soundtrack was incomplete and inaccurate. Seriously, I'm considering blocking you but I won't, because it's fun watching "adults" nerdrage :)
Closest I've found to a high quality version is /watch?v=PAsKftqdifk. I cannot find it anywhere else, and I've looked. It's why I edited it myself, right before finding the complete version at that link.
@Mastermage78 I had to convert it from the video here on youtube (not my version here, but the true rare version. Search for it). I tried finding it online but no luck.
There would be no Final Fantasy, BRIGHT (the magic wands are unicorn horns "of LEGEND"-- go back and watch) and a million other inspirations to this film without LEGEND. Not EVEN the FILM adaptation of The Neverending Story. Don't even get me started on the subplot from Bladerunner USING the LEGEND Unicorn footage from the film. And Tangerine Dream influenced Daft Punk, ORBITAL and all the legends of electronic transcended sound itself. Dare I say even The Last Unicorn anime adaptation. Spittin' facts.
"Loved By The Sun" - Tangerine Dream w/ Jon Anderson from Yes, goes into "Is Your Love Strong Enough" by Brian Ferry at the credits. Both are on the Official Soundtrack.
@lavendermagic84 v=PAsKftqdifk is the full version without editing. I still can't find it outside youtube, and didn't find it until after I had done this video. I'd think the only reason he wouldn't like it would be because it's not "traditional". I much prefer it myself.
@jatnz just as an FYI to everyone, this is probably the version found on itunes: v=sfREXJklz-U. This is the soundtrack version. This is the rare version I tried to create in this video, which I can't find anywhere except here on youtube: v=PAsKftqdifk
The theme above in this video is heard in full on the cd without the 'birds' tweeting in the background. It also plays the Loved by the Sun theme w/o the lyrics --the very part where Tom Cruise (Jack) tells the female unicorn "I meant no wrong." Also, it has remixes by Tangerine Dream of the score and music and everything you hear in the movie and the part where the fairy sneaks to get a peak at what's happening to Lily when the Devil thing (Red Bull) seduces her.
For the life of me, I CAN'T understand how anybody could think the Goldsmith score is better than the Tangerine Dream one. The UNICORN theme that Tangerine dream produced MADE this movie. AND THAT'S THE TRUTH. NO ROOM FOR DEBATE. IT'S THE FACT!
That scene does bring a tear and it's mostly because of the score.
I think it might have to do with what version was watched first. I was born in 85, so as a young girl Legend was my BIBLE. Jack Burton Well said. Thank God for Tangerine Dream.

3:50 this is when the actual, 'true' ambient "Unicorn Theme" we all know and love begins. This is what should repeat on forever.
Beautiful piece of music from a true masterpiece of a movie. When i think of fantasy, the first thing i think of is Legend
I'm not a fan of Scott but I will say that Legend is one of two things in his career he's done right (the other being Aliens). That said, this IS truly a beautiful piece.

We're already living in a fantasy, you have no idea what this world really is and contains.
***** Are you speaking to me? Dude I rail against this world and its insanity everyday.
3:02 - 3:35 - I tear up during this part, because I remember the scene this comes from. Always makes me cry, every single time. Such a sad, but visually beautiful, scene. :(
awesome music to Role play too...and Legend is my all time favorite movie
Throwing this into a DND campaign would make certain instances so much better.. you should check out aether essence music of Mana.. into the thick of it would probably have to be my favorite track right now..
easily one of the best ever movie soundtracks in history! 👍👏🎶🎵🎬

This is amazing. This is possibly the most epic and important fantasy piece ever created. I would love to listen to a 432hz version of it.
This takes me way back to the days of Willow, The Goonies, The Labyrinth, Disney's Robin Hood, Unico...I could go on all day. *sigh* :) I just listened to this 10 consecutive times and had the best stretch session. I got the other version of the Legend and I couldn't even watch it!!! I love tangerine dream!!!
IKR. I got it sent old school Netflix and was irritated it was the "Directors Cut" 💔😢😠🤬
I'll always remember when Tangerine Dream played this piece of music live as the 1st encore of the Montréal PDA on their tour in 1986... I was blown away... Tangerine Dreams music calms the savage soul.
HELL YES
Yes it does
those clavicords and amazing notes, just pure music to my sould... thank you
When I fell for a guy, I could hear this in my head.
Funny, because I always play this when I descend the stairs in slow-mo when my date arrives.
This movie makes me teary eyed because it takes me back to my childhood...I love it.
The unicorn aka loved by the sun instrumental version. Love it.

I have the entire album of music (T Dream version) it's a pretty rare album but I think I found it by searching online. It has this track in it's proper full length. :) All of the music is so incredible.
LIAR!!!
This is by far the most beautiful fantasy film, EVER. The soundtrack is so mesmerizing. Ive been a fan over 35 years 😂❤
Such a great movie and score.

I Love this Music Very Soothing to the Soul!!!!
This will always be my most favorite movie. And the song......
Top notch best is my eyes.

Poor Lily.
Used as a pawn against two creatures. One that coveted her and the other that nievely did not protect her until it was to late.

You would think Goldsmith getting replaced is blasphemy until you listen to this. All there is to say.
4:25 is perfect.
This is the most incredible fantasy music period. Nothing comes close. As mentioned before, makes my hair stand on end. Beautiful...
makes me dream every time
Yes, this is the point where the 'real' theme starts.
He wanted his longer version of Legend. The musical score in theaters was with Tangerine dream I think and the film was much shorter..
absolutely love 4:00-7:06 thank you so much for posting !
It is very hard to top Tangerine Dream , especially for soundtracks. awesome movie awesome song best part starts at 5:00, this movie n movie reminds me so much of legend of Zelda ..thanks for upload
This is the instrumental version of the song "Loved by the Sun"
A mystifying piece :)
I agree Ave Satanas Ave Domini Inferni.I agree.
+Ave Satanas Ave Domini Inferni it's actually the other way around, "Loved by the Sun" is the vocal version of this tune (Unicorn theme)
Best music in the world... Now this is how you express your self.

If Ridley would've combined T Dream's music with Jerry Gold smith's with his extended version, I would've liked it better too. Even though in other movies J Gold smith's scores are used perfectly with every scene.
Too bad he's passed on, but we do now have some good replacement composers that are almost as good, imo
Love this mrsparkle!! You put all of my fave songs from the movie together. Sounds really beautiful. Thanks for posting it. ; )

I like this movie my favorite of all
relaxed I feel at peace when I see this movie
What kind of flute is being played in the 2nd half? Its my favourite the sound makes my hairs stand on end
I thought it was a pan flute but it might be synthesized.
Definitely synthesized, but your closest would be the orchestral low flute, I believe they're called, or the Ocarina would give you the nuances they're mimicking with pitch bending. Leah Ollsson Almost all of Tangerine Dream's music is synth, but it is still great.
I've been waiting on this song for years... This song is pure bliss.
All time favorite movie. Takes me back to the innocence of childhood. ♥♥♥♥♥♥
Thanks for the upload, beautiful track that I included on our wedding DVD. But sorry, this is not complete because the last few seconds are missing, when it is brought to a logical ending instead of fading out. Listen to any live version and you can hear the full ending.

That was what I needed to read to listen to all of their music. Thanks. :)
This song means so much to me
Wonderful!!! Thanks so much!!!
Sublime.
Thank you so much for this

True love exists when I hear this♾
Some of it has a Donkey Kong Country quality about it (SNES). VERY nice :)
LEGEND IS A GREAT MOVIE WITH AN ENORMOUS BAND ADVANCE TO HIS TIME.
Master piece !
better than the og great edit love the way it keeps going ;)
always loved that music (in the 2nd half of the track) There is an expanded bootleg of Tangerine Dreams' score which has the full 7min version of this track but the sound quality (mono) isn't as good as the 'edited in' (stereo) version from the film as you've done here,
@Mastermage78 maybe you can get the film soundtrack second hand i have it on old Casett tape i got about 5 years ago at a car bootsale for next to nothing also the song is called Loved by the sun
Yea dude like wow man!

This was such a great movie...but why can't I find the "closing credits" song...where Jack and Lilly are waving good-bye to their friends...
Could you create this to mp3 and hook me up pls.. Amazing
Yes did all the original music for this movie. This doesn't even have the lyrics
I have the movie......"Tangerine Dream" is the musical artist;
Dude send me a copy
