Such a great movie. The designs from Bottin are some of the best. Love this sound track. I also really enjoy the European version. Different feel all together But this sound track is so amazing
Its hard to believe both tom cruise and tim curry both felt embarrassed by their performances afterwards yet i feel the movie captured a special Moment in movie making that captivated us all...a cult classic most definitely
"for that time" takes away the strength of that statement. Also since most movies in the 80s and 90s are far better than current, I'm not sure why "for that time" is needed.

If by "anyone" you mean people younger than 20 years old then sure. But everyone who grew up in the 80's or 90's already knew "dungeon synth"is nothing new. We've watched films like this one, or have played might and magic or any of the fantasy games like the Might and Magic series the Legend of Kyrandia series, The Legacy of Kain series, etc. It's just an age gap thing. Funny how everything 80's became popular again.

That was just studio interference, but Tangerine Dream did a great job making their music fit the American cut of the film like a glove. @@kitraestudio Well like I mentioned above with the technology we have now it's easy for for composers to download the entire score including extras that weren't used in the movie because we are in the digital world now instead of the analog back in the 80's and prior but I'm sure if the technology we have now was around back then I'm sure either Jerry Goldsmith or Tangerine Dream wouldn't of had any problems downloading the entire score at that time.
Dude, had the cassette and cd forever ago, I liked the words mixed in too. Also liked Anderson’s voice, it has an elf like, otherworldly quality to it. I like the instrumental versions too, but prefer my old soundtracks. Amazing movie that still holds up today, it’s timeless.
Amazing work! One of the tracks I felt was missing from the original soundtrack was the track used in the scene with Meg Mucklebones. Hearing it in full is a special treat as well as the other tracks included here.
My hats off to you sir - or as Blade Runner puts it -- "You have done a man's job". You have provided not only the core pieces of music, but also any incidental music that would be fleeting in the sound track. Congratulations! This is the sound track I wish could have been released in the 80's.
This is a movie you have to see the two versions one after the other to me, the European version is better than the American version, but this American version has the better soundtrack but both are fantastic.
I always wished they had made a version with all the extended scenes, but with the audio and music of Tangerine Dream version. Some of the line deliveries in the uncut version were just horrible compared to the cut, but I loved the extended scenes so much. And the score by Tangerine Dream was just perfect. I listen to Blue Room regularly still.
Amazing. I just read Ridley Scott hired Tangerine Dream to score this film because Jerry Goldsmith's score wouldn't resonate with the younger audience AND only had THREE weeks to complete....WOW!
It was more pressure from Universal than something Ridley wanted to do. Specifically president Sid Sheinberg, who thought American kids would not like it. I think the studio thought TD would do a rock and roll soundtrack, like they had just done for the Tom Cruise film Risky Business. Thankfully TD did not do that and we have this fantastic score. Scott has said the score took three weeks to do, but Edgar Froese of TD said it actually took them two months.
One of my favorite films and favorite scores!! It's REALLY nice to be able to hear so many pieces that were not on the released score! Espcially the addition of the "Jack and Lily" theme!
Thank you so much for this video. I bought the soundtrack on CD over 20 years ago however the new songs I have never heard are just incredible. I appreciate the work you did and the love you have for the film and Tangerine Dream.
Thank you for this! I've loved this soundtrack and it's contributors since I saw the film in theaters the weekend it was released. "Loved by the Sun" and "Is Your Love Strong Enough" are on regular rotation at this house.
This is awesome! Some great images and pictures throughout the slideshow I haven't seen before as well. An amazing film with a great and atmospheric soundtrack all the way through, but easily identifiable to which scenes there from. And the end credits song by Bryan Ferry and David Gilmour is just icing on the cake!
I only included the TD music they composed here, but I love that Gilmour/Ferry song. There is a pop version of the Unicorn Theme TD recorded with a female vocalist that was awful, so I am glad they did not use that for the credits. However, I would have rather TD composed some proper end credits music in the same style as the rest of the movie.
I absolutely disagree with the opinion presented about using Jon Anderson's vocals for " Loved by the sun." It's too bad Tangs leader Edgar Froese was "unhappy" after Jon's singing was added. I think the vocals were excellent and add to the soundtrack....
Jon's singing was excellent, but Edgar was probably more upset that the producers did that without TD's involvement. Personally, I would rather have had no vocals at all. Just let TD's music shine. It did not need anything added to it.
Agreed 100%, Loved By The Sun with Jon Anderson's vocals lent the entire movie an ethereal quality that spoke of the spiritual lessons taught throughout the film, and the connection between light and darkness, coming of age, and transformation.
Dammit I don’t know if I have this version or not. I watched the movie as a kid and loved it, and recently put my pirate hat on to acquire another copy that I haven’t actually watched yet. Now I’m going to be stressing over which version I have 😅
This mix is so meticulously sourced, mixed, and edited. You hit all the sounds I want to hear without the dialogue! As a long-time fan of everything this movie and the Tangerine Dream score, THANK YOU. 🙏🏼
There another version of the cottage theme in the movie which is different from the album. Its more softer and dreamy than the album. ruclips.net/video/TNfHGA3f5kQ/видео.htmlsi=H0yUJ3zL_X43HK02
Yes, I prefer that to the album version, but I could not successfully isolate the music from all the sound effects and birds chirping, so it's not here. Same with the music in the ring dive sequence. I posted a rough mix somewhere in one of the comments below. Audio separation tools keep getting better and better, so I may attempt it again in the future.

Keith Rae, WOW, you did a fantastic job! The noises/dialogue are virtually inaudible. Pleasant and comfortable to listen to. THANK YOU!!! I like this mix of the original score much better (unlike previous releases - official and unofficial).
Brilliant! A film where I truly adore both versions and soundtracks. There's so many versions of both scores out there. I wonder if somewhere there exists a version of Tangerine Dream's "The Cottage" as heard in the film. It's a lot more soft and delicate. ruclips.net/video/TNfHGA3f5kQ/видео.html
There are many birds and other sound effects that I could not clean up in the beginning of that cue, so I did not include it here. Below is a link to a rough mix I made, combining what I could extract from the film with the album version. soundcloud.com/nasnandos/cottage-legend-film-score-cue-mixed-with-soundtrack-albumv2
I find this soundtrack very interesting, because it has lots of same sort of ques what yhou heard on William Friedkin's Sorcerer. Curious that was this just the style of Tangerine Dream still during this time, or did Ridley Scott request to make soundtrack that kinda had similar kind of vibes to Sorcerer's soundtrack.
Nice work. I used to be such a TD fan boy, they could do no wrong. At one time, I had nearly everything they ever released commercially. I think I topped out at 127. Legend was magnificent...the music, not so much the film. Seeing Doctor Frank N. Furter as The Lord of Darkness was a treat. Tim Curry brought such intensity to his role. Overdubbing Jon Anderson for the soundtrack delivered an interesting song, but I understand why you didn't include it here...and I'm a big vintage YES fan, as well.
DAMN! It’s almost like no one can find the original Tangerine Dream score of Lily when she’s skipping through the field to the cottage. It’s not on cottage at all.
It's all in Cottage, it's just that TD added more instrumentation over it. The film version has never been released in any other form, and I have not had any luck trying to remove all the bird chirping and sound fx from the film cue.
This is the old rough mix I made, but there are still too many sound effects that I could not clean up in the beginning. soundcloud.com/nasnandos/cottage-legend-film-score-cue-mixed-with-soundtrack-albumv2
Man, as much as I already liked the TD score in the film, now I see it got short shrift. There's so much more amazing stuff here! Both versions of the film and soundtracks have their points, but my dream version is the director's cut movie with this soundtrack.
About 83 minutes of TD music was used in the film, and almost all of that is here. The extra, non-film soundtrack music here is mostly the reworked versions of the same music cues from the official soundtrack, and a couple of extended sections from the 1986 live concert performances.
Hey there, Kit. Any chance of a lossless download link for this amazing work? I'm working on a Legend project right now and this would help so, so much. I could just download this from YT, but I'd sure rather have the source files than YT's compressed versions.
I have a mix of that music, but the quality was not good enough to include here. All the surround channels for that section and the ring dive/frozen lake section are plastered with bird chirps and loud, jarring sound effects. Too much to digitally or manually remove and still keep the music intact. I will attempt it again at some point, but with the audio tools I have now, it's just not clean enough.
@@kitraestudiothis is AMAZING. This soundtrack has been one I’ve spent years trying to hunt down the full pieces of. This is best edit of this scene I’ve ever heard!
@@jesseblevins1696 I have a slightly improved version here. Slightly less choppy and the synth intro is a bit louder. Still full of sound effect I can't removed however. soundcloud.com/nasnandos/ring-dive-and-frozen-lake-legend-film-score-cue-revised-mix
That sounds like Johannes Schmoelling to me. He is an excellent piano player. The only instrumentation that I suspect may have been added later when the vocals were recorded are some of the big cymbal crashes and timpani sounds. Producer David Tickle is credited for Jon Anderson's work, so those may have been added by him in the mixing stage. I was fortunate enough to see and hear them perform many of those Legend tracks live in 1986, and those were not part of the song when TD performed it.
Yeah, we don't ever see what happens to the Goblins save Blunder who gets blasted by the sun beam as it blows open the door to Darkness' inner sanctum at the end of the film. Blix and Pox are never seen again once Darkness takes the Elicorn from Blunder after his humorously defiant outburst.
In one of the drafts for the original script, Blix & Pox hide out and wait it all out I believe. The site Legend FAQ is a great source for all things Legend
As I mentioned below the video, and a few pieces of unreleased film music were released on Johannes Schmoelling’s Early Beginnings CD, which I mixed into tracks 10 and 12 here. The track Goldhunter, from TD's The Hollywood Years Volume 1 CD, has a sequencer part from Legend as its backing track, but Edgar Froese played additional synths over it. That changed it quite a bit from the film version. As far as I know, none of the rest of the unreleased film music has ever surfaced on any official release.
This version of the movie with Tangerine Dream's music was far superior to the internation version with classical style music. I learned of this music version when I bought the dvd years ago, was pissed because I love the American soundtrack

@@kitraestudio nice! You did a really good job considering all the sounds in the scene. Definitely got this bookmarked on soundcloud now! thanks :)
Amazing!!! Thank you so much!! 😍

@@kitraestudio you did it! I love it! Thank you!!!!
@@kitraestudio omg this one too! Absolutely beautiful! Thank you!
Amazing. First time I hear Jack and Lily's theme during the fairy magic scene.
Same here
Very good compilation, cheers!
I think LEGEND is one of TD's most inspired scores.
Hey there, Kit. Any chance of a lossless download link for this amazing work? I'm working on a Legend project right now and this would help so, so much. I could just download this from YT, but I'd sure rather have the source files than YT's compressed versions.
Holy cow thank you so much! I've been trying to find a clean version of the Meg Mucklebones portion for so long!
The finest fantasy film ever made and the Tangerine Dream soundtrack is awesome
A VERY UNDERATED FILM I BOUGHT THIS ON CD WHEN MY VHS TAPE GAVE UP BUT THE MUSIC WAS NOT THE SAME THIS MUSIC MAKES THIS FILM
Thank-you for uploading this! This is one of My favourite movies! 🤔😁👍🏻🥰🤗💖🦄 Essentially, the film, but just the instrumental parts. 🤔😁👍🏻
The best score! Thanks for posting!
Legendary
Superb work, thanks for uploading. Hearing things here not heard before in my extended soundtrack CD and Blu Ray.
Because of this movie I believe ... the devil is real .
Thanks a lot for making this! I still miss the music from the scene "I will marry whoever finds this ring", though!
Here is the rough mix.

@@kitraestudio Oh man, thank you very much for this, it made my day!!!

Rick Baker best make up artist for special effects
Tom Cruz first serious role.
A visual and musically underated masterpiece ❤
Long live Beren Half Hand and Luthien Tinubiel.
Wondering if the piano in the bridge to "Loved by the Sun" was also an addition not by TD?
That sounds like Johannes Schmoelling to me. He is an excellent piano player. The only instrumentation that I suspect may have been added later when the vocals were recorded are some of the big cymbal crashes and timpani sounds. Producer David Tickle is credited for Jon Anderson's work, so those may have been added by him in the mixing stage.
I was fortunate enough to see and hear them perform many of those Legend tracks live in 1986, and those were not part of the song when TD performed it.
Perfect weather for Tangerine Dream.
Childhood memories this takes me back 😊
@29:46 pazuzu!
Thank you!!! This score is awesome.
I still wonder what happened to Blix in the second act.
Loved Blix.
“I get the point Lord.”
-Blix
Yeah, we don't ever see what happens to the Goblins save Blunder who gets blasted by the sun beam as it blows open the door to Darkness' inner sanctum at the end of the film. Blix and Pox are never seen again once Darkness takes the Elicorn from Blunder after his humorously defiant outburst.
Blix is swallowed up into a hole isn't he, by the Dark Lord?
@@AndrewHaymnah. Was the other armored dude with horns on his helmet.
In one of the drafts for the original script, Blix & Pox hide out and wait it all out I believe. The site Legend FAQ is a great source for all things Legend
HAUNTINGLY TIMELESS IT CONVEYS SO MUCH MORE THAN MERE LYRICS OR IMAGES AND DEEPLY TOUCHES THE ETERNAL SOUL,...PRESUMING YOU HAVE ONE I SUPPOSE.
Takes me back to late 80's early 90's .best times...need that time machine scientists
Excellent
Was there ever a physical release for any of the unreleased music?
As I mentioned below the video, and a few pieces of unreleased film music were released on Johannes Schmoelling’s Early Beginnings CD, which I mixed into tracks 10 and 12 here. The track Goldhunter, from TD's The Hollywood Years Volume 1 CD, has a sequencer part from Legend as its backing track, but Edgar Froese played additional synths over it. That changed it quite a bit from the film version. As far as I know, none of the rest of the unreleased film music has ever surfaced on any official release.
@@kitraestudio How can i find 04 Jack and Lily (film score cue mix) † 08:10 in physical format?
@@AmbientoftheFel Unless someone has bootlegged it off this youtube and sold disks, there was no physical release of that version
This version of the movie with Tangerine Dream's music was far superior to the internation version with classical style music. I learned of this music version when I bought the dvd years ago, was pissed because I love the American soundtrack
