    the thing that bothers me is that society labels card games like yugioh as "for kids", or if you are an adult who plays it then you are considered nerdy or immature, meanwhile there are grown ass adults who play poker and other card games that involve gambling recreationally/professionally and nobody bats an eye at that, both are incredibly complex and require strategy, the only difference is that yugioh has anime style artwork on each card, people see that artwork and immediately they register it as being "for children"

    • @cochiselol1232
      @cochiselol1232 7 лет назад +7

      imbatman yeah I play poker for a living and yugioh recreationally and it's very similar! Except I haven't seen people kicked out of a card shop having bet the shirt off their back..

      I feel like a lot of people's logic is basically [animation = for kids]. (Even though by that "logic," shows like South park, Family Guy, etc. are kid's shows because they are cartoons/animated.)

      Be thankful that you have locals, we in Latvia do not even have them. All we have is one little shop and couple dozen players scattered across the country. And it really sucks that biggest (unofficial) tournament that we can organize has like 6 people......... And you can almost always predict the winner before tournament even starts, because everyone knows everyones deck and its terribly unbalanced because most of us play for fun and have funky old ass archtype decks. I am very competitive person and it really feels bad when I have to bench my monarch deck for some old deck, because everyone elses decks just cant compete with meta. Basically be grateful for that you have regionals even if they are filled with assholes.

    A guy was playing me at locals and in round 2 a kid stopped him asking for any selling cards he had. He spent a good 15 minutes going back and forth about how much his cards were. I then interrupted it saying that "its a freaking card game not a flea market!!" Sometimes, when people just don't stop going through every card that the other has for trade, it just peeves me off!

  • @nicholashamilton6274

    I certainly agree with this discussion topic. It really is a shame that most of these problems that make Yu-Gi-Oh unfriendly are from the community/ card shop atmosphere, but as someone who has spent some time at those places I can certainly agree that they hold true, which probably confirms it across the board. I also think the game as it is today is incredibly complex for a young child to understand, just so much you need to know and study to keep at it, makes it seems like it is more trouble than it is worth (this can apply to any newer potential player as well)
    I mean I started playing Yugioh at around eight or nine (over 10 years ago) and had a good experience with it but mostly cause I was not exposed to the shop/ large community environment (I mean i can hardly deal with it today) and the game was simpler and easier to learn.

    • @alecfields1153
      @alecfields1153 10 лет назад +1

      yeah i didn't have card shops growing up and i really only played with my bro or at school (rarely).My first time at a shop was just last year I don't know why I was expecting to see children. Shops have a terrible connotation as they seem like a dead end for alot of people in their 20s-40s.

    This wasn't a huge issue back then compared to now. I mean...like yugioh became unfriendly because it's a salty ass game now and not only that it's becoming even more expensive. When I go to locals at times I get bashed on for playing deck I wanna play. The whole it's not good you shouldn't play it time of thing. I barely go now because they will say hey let me help you build a deck that's playable. I don't like hearing that. If you ever played Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3...that's exactly what yugioh is like today.

    I just, as in repressed this memory, remembered that one of my first locals in Middle School, I had a dude steal my LOB Swords of Revealing Light while looking through my deck.
    I had to wait a week to confront him Cuz by the time I noticed he'd bounced and it was one of the most uncomfortable experiences I've ever dealt with. He gave it back when I confronted him but still. Older dude, knew more. Same shit when I got asked to play for a card. Got OTK'd with a Jinzo back in the day. Took my card, was a kid. Fuckin gross.
    It's definitely not a kid's game.

    I did a little experiment by teaching my 5 years old little brother how to play yugioh and here's what happened: he knows how to normal summon and tribute summon but he doesn't know how to synchro xyz pendulum or even link but he knows how to ritual and fusion but sometimes he kind of forgets how to play the game. in the middle of the game he instantly forgets how to tribute ritual and fusion. He knows how spells and traps cards works and what their purposes are (as well as monster card effects). when he activates a spell card or trap card he gives it to me to read the card description and if it's playable I'll tell him that he can activate it. If its not playable I'll tell him to activate the card when I move to my standby phase battle phase main phase 1/2 end phase do something like this and stuff blah blah blah.
    he doesn't know how the turn structures works (except the draw phase)
    But at least he knows how half of the game works.
    It's actually a miracle believe it or not.

    At my local card shop, everyone who plays there gets along well. Whenever we get a kid, or someone new in general, in the shop, we are friendly towards them. We had one guy who got back into the game and brings his kid, and everyone there (including myself) helped both of them. We've definitely had some salt, but no one has ever gotten extremely mad or anything like that. I wish more card shops could be like the one i go to tho. So many people got mad at a card shop I visited on a road trip and it was quite daunting.

    The way Konami does it is they get the children hooked on the TV show with all the over-the-top characters, the bright colors, and the cool monsters. Then they keep them by encouraging them to learn the rules and get better by buying the better cards. This eventually turns into a never ending rat race to be the best, especially since most young duelists are boys, which are competitive and optimistic. Eventually, they become adults veteran duelists, full-grown sugarcane stalks whose big-money crop is harvested every format. They tend to stay with the game out of a combination of a sense of nostalgia and the sad fact that Yu-Gi-Oh is one of the few things they are really good at it. Yu-Gi-Oh is definitely not a children's card game. But the children are the seed that is fertilized and eventually grows into a zero-agency money tree. I still play, and I love it. But parents, please just have your kid go out for sports or something. It's not worth it.

    I feel like all the tryhard competitive players started this whole 'yugioh is not a children's card game' thing.People just use it as an excuse of why they are taking this game so seriously.And they shouldn't be.

      VixXstazosJOB good point and also the pictures on the cards dont look childish unless you get to the toon cards. but the other cards look very feirsome so theres that too. and the game is extremely complex and it seems like its too complex for kids. I know i didnt understand it at all when I was a kid. i wasnt even able to play it because of how complex it was and sometimes its still a tiny bit confusing.

    It is really not a children's card game and I notice at tournaments lots of people get salty and are swearing a ton, so these little kids hear and go ask their parents what they mean, then they leave and never come back if things in yugioh weren't so negative, we wouldn't be losing all these future players

    Most of these were problems with the fanbase and not the game itself. The PLAYERS smoke, THEY are setting a bad example. The PLAYERS curse, THEY are setting a bad example. The PLAYERS trade money for cards and make tricky deals with uninformed people. The PLAYERS have bad hygiene, THEY are setting a bad example, and are also generally stinking up the place. The PLAYERS are acting salty, THEY are setting a bad example. I could go on and on... It's like saying that children shouldn't play SM4SH because there are tiers.

    I remember my first locals where there was a kid who ran a great blue eyes deck. he had some of his cards stolen. Unfortunately I turned into bystander which I'm ashamed of. Also, I ran a gem-knight deck and beat dragon rulers. The guy was extremely mad and said my deck was for chumps. Then he proceeded to talk crap behind my back. Yeah I agree yugioh is a game like any other game with a lot of negativity. Though to some degree maybe kids should learn that life is rough sometimes. However we shouldn't be the ones teaching them the hard way that life is rough.

      we have to remember at its core this game is for kids. As adults it is our responsibility to make sure kids enjoy the game regardless whether they win or lose. Teaching is for their parents or school the shop is a place to have fun and enjoy the game. Of course this is ideal and we both know neither of those two things happen very often.

    I feel like this is just a way to justify playing it at older ages. None of the things presented here are YGO exclusive. These types of people are everywhere. YGO is a children's because it is marketed and designed for children to understand it easily. Honestly it's silly to attempt to make this point at all. This is a game meant to be enjoyed by all ages but primarily younger people.

    Ok. I'm freaking fourteen and I compete in local tournaments more than weekly. I mean, I go to four small tourneys a week and I almost was going to go the 2016 regionals. I love this game, I think it is not a childrens card game, but I know for the fact that children can go to those game stores where 20-30 year olds go and ave a good time playing a Japanese card game. All people can play yugioh and don't say it bad for children because that gives parents the wrong idea and don't allow their children to play.

    I use to play yugioh back when I was in middle school. I sadly stopped. I was never good at it, and not to mention I got teased a lot because of my deck. Never liked going to tournaments since a lot of the players are rude.. Plus some don't even play for fun.. it honestly sucks.. if I am gonna play a game like D&D, Yugioh, Pokemon, That stuff, I wanna play it with people who are having fun. In fact, I am getting into Heroclix because the players I have met are fun. and win or lose we always have a smile on our faces..
    Not saying that yugioh players are assholes, Not everyone who plays it is an asshole. Just a lot of the people I have met are full of themselves and a bunch of jackasses.

At my old locals there was some kids there but not in this one. I kinda like it when there are some kids playing the game it makes it fun and interesting since they use decks they made that no one else would play.

    I remember the first local tournament I won. I was still pretty much a noob because I after i won the finals (back then we played-off at locals) I asked the owner: "Who is my next opponent?" and he replied: "No one. You already won the whole thing". I also remember using gravekeepers in that tournament and beating the #1 guy in raking in Puerto Rico (where I live) and negated Sangan and Mystic Tomato with Necrovalley. Since the card was very controversial when it was going to be ruled, I accidentally made him believe that it indeed was able to negate effects that trigger in the grave. LOL.

    I'm 12 and I enjoy Yu-Gi-Oh.I love the original series and Zexal(I've only seen those two) and I can play the game with basic knowledge.I mean there are some things I don't understand but I know the game pretty well.The thing is adults play more than kids because kids don't know entertainment now a days and also because most adults that play grew up with it.I know a few kids who like the show,the game,play the game,and all of the above!Then again it depends how the word "kid" is being used.

    • @prabh4489
      @prabh4489 9 лет назад

      I agree. I'm 14 and I started Yu-Gi-Oh in 2008 when 5ds came out. I started playing when I was 7 so I really like the game and don't think it's for kids. Even before that I used to watch some of Yu-Gi-Oh GX and was interested in the game. I watched all 5 series (only half of Zexal cuz it sucked) of Yu-Gi-Oh I think the reason Yu-Gi-Oh is seen as more childish now is because the newer series like Zexal and Arc-V are just really childish. The original Yu-Gi-Oh had a dark Egyptian theme and the there was stuff like getting trapped in cards and legendary cards from ancient times. GX had some of the dark theme as well in the last season with the main Character turning evil and the card from his past coming back. It also had some links to the original with the Slifer Red, Ra Yellow, and Obelisk Blue colours and The first episode where Yami gave Judai Winged Kuribo. 5ds was completely dark themed and I don't even need to explain it. Then they fucked up and made it carnival themed and stuff.

    We should put in more effort to cleanup the community. Security cameras. Find ways to stop cheating. Tournament places need fresh air. Not sure what to do about showering and deodorant. Maybe regionals should have security guards and judges should check people when they entre and kick people out for not showering lol.

  • @robertbob4797
    @robertbob4797 8 лет назад

    I know I might get some hate for this, but most of the negative things you describe pertain solely to competitive players. I used to go to my local card shop as a kid to play the Yugioh and Pokemon TCG and it was always a positive experience for me, but as soon as I started trying to get more into the competitive scene I encountered a lot of what you described. I think the opposite, I think this is a children's card game and the more people in the community understand that the better the community will become. I mean people say that the game is too complicated and there is too much money being thrown around for it to be for kids, but the same can be said for other children's games and products. Do you know how much money someone is willing to pay for a lego mini-figure? I mean come on, just watch a commercial for one of the new booster packs and tell me that it isn't marketed towards kids. Sorry for the long rant I love what you guys do and I think you made some good points, I just think that the game isn't the problem the fanbase is. That's why I mostly play the game casually now with my friends or at small events. I play for fun and it makes me happy, if you play only to win and your one of those douchey people who go to locals and take pride in crushing kids crappy (but often creative) decks with your cookie cutter, copy paste, found on the internet decks then I truly feel sorry for you and if you play only to win and don't care about enjoying the game then you should play another game like magic or LOL or something, but hey that's just my opinion you are certainly entitled to your own :)

    To those saying it's too complicated for kids, I started playing aged 7 (albeit all my friends were 2 years older but that's still fairly young).
    Also, about the "people are dicks" thing, I went to my first event at 10 and everyone was nice to me. Not only that but they treated me like I was their age (although only after beating one of them in the first duel; I'm pretty sure they made some remark before I played). I didn't witness any smoking, swearing or any sort of rude behaviour.

It is for kids but equally for anyone else. Perhaps 7 is a bit young and I was just lucky to be good enough at reading and maths at that age but surely a 9 year old can play? Perhaps not to an amazing standard but should defo be able to play.

    I thought they were going to talk about how complicated the game is. Not to be rude,but the logic used here could be applied to a teeter totter. Just because a bunch of adults who, smoke, cuss, and steal make up a majority of who rides the totter doesn't mean it's childish. Seems more like an attack on the community.
