Figured I'd post this here since a lot of people seem to be confused and alienated by the sentiments and tone in this video. Trust me when I say that we are well aware of what we say and how we act in everything we record. We usually use jokes and sarcasm as a tool to make controversial topics more entertaining, and we play devil's advocate to encourage more open-minded thinking. Don't take our humor or approach too seriously. These are just videos, not hate speech. Keep that in mind and just enjoy the video!

Seems like this video was aimed at people who had never been apart of a competitive CCG scene before, might want to clarify that. Do you plan on doing an actual "returning players" guide for those of us with experience in CCGs?

    • @MackseatGaming
      @MackseatGaming 7 лет назад +5

Exactly this. I'm a "returning duelist" but I left the competitive scene in the 5Ds era. It took all of 3 minutes to review the new ban list, and about an hour to catch up on what XYZ and Pendulum cards are and how they work.
It really sounds like they're picking on people who were 12 when they played the game last....and during the original 4th series booster era....like, they would be 25 - 30 now. I think they'll be able to read and comprehend the current rulesets (or one would hope). No one gets their understanding of the card game from the anime anymore, except little kids.

I can relate to a lot of these, especially the MST thing. I got back into yugioh right after the XYZ Monsters came out. When they came out with the Pendulums I stopped again cause I was like "Nah, they're doing too much right now" I was thinking about getting back into it after they release more Link Monsters, because Link Monsters kinda butchered the Pendulums

The game is too strict for casual trading now. The old prints are pretty much junk now and get more worthless with age. Now that everything is archetype based people are even more picky and nothing outside them or the very rare cards for that archetype are worth anything.

    • @ThorHanson7531

***** Exactly, Konami should just remove the entire "Trading Card Game" from the title. It should just be Yu-Gi-Oh!, because hardly anyone trades anymore. Instead, it's more like, "Oh hey Jimmy can I get some Blackwing cards?"
"Sure Billy you can get some of my Blackwing cards. They're 5 cents each"
Billy Hands Jimmy $2, and Jimmy hands Billy 30 useless cards that 5 years old.

Seriously, like 90% of players will never even enter regionals. Don't have a stroke upon learning that your deck will not achieve worl champion status.
You can still play it most of the time. I really like to!
      Just don't expect achieving titles.
Enjoynment is only a factor when you play with your friends or local card shop guys.
When you go competitive, you just play the meta. If you want it or not. Your rogue deck won't suddenly counter the guy that shuts you down in 2 turns or even less.

  • @Griffnix
    @Griffnix 8 лет назад +141

this is kind of putting down some old returning players. A lot of this would affect 'scrub' players. Not having sleeves on your cards for example. And not following the rules. it makes it sound like all people who played back in the day didn't care for their cards much and didn't know how to play and knew after 5ds or they quit because of that.
Other than that, it is hard to get back. As someone who stopped playing before 5ds, the mechanics and speed are both daunting and scary. It is the reason I still haven't come back. Buying cards, I can get around because I can use duel simulators but the problem is I don't know 90 percent of the the new cards. I am still interested in the game and want to keep up with it but as a spectator not unlike a sports fan following the game.

It wasn't any different in competitive yugioh back in the day. Even in "old school" yugioh you would have a hard time playing competitively if you weren't playing something meta. Doesn't change the fact that you can still play whatever you want casually with friends.

Playing casually gets annoying though when your friends don't want to play in a consistent format. I hate having to at least try to play loose tournament style for practice and the nostalgia scrubs don't want to even try to follow the most flexible of the new rules. People who fell out from the old days that just want to play school yard style and cheat when it doubt. Those people.

    • @theoryoftheinnocent

      jceyx _
There's quite a difference between what you're saying and what the video is saying. People will pay a lot of money for unopened tins or packs or boxes because they're unopened, not because of whatever cards are in the set. Collectors will never, ever open that Dark Magician tin because that would ruin its collector's value.
That said, the video wasn't 100% clear on its statement either. People won't pay much for your old cards that aren't in print anymore, UNLESS they have been protected and kept in mint condition or as close to mint condition as possible. The problem is that most people probably kept their cards from that era in a shoebox or a low-end binder, degrading their quality and making them worth little to nothing for collectors.

Played super scrubby in the beginning, stopped around the beginning of the GX era. Met some guys in college who reintroduced me back into the game around when synchros were new-ish and Lightsworn were the big thing. I got my first taste of competitive Yugioh, and tried to cobble together a workable deck from the old trash cards I had. Stopped after about a month because those friends lost interest.
Later on, right after XYZs were made, I actually got into competitive yoogs, made a competitive deck and dedicated myself to getting good. Topped some locals here and there. After graduating, I quit again because the only people I plays with were still in school. (Pendulums had just come out).
Just a month ago I got sucked back into the game again.
I've had multiple instances of being reintroduced to "new" Yugioh, and every single time is a "wtf" experience.

The rules I made up for the Egyptian God cards when I was a kid:
Slifer gets ATK and DEF points equal to the number of cards currently in your hand while you are summoning him x1000 and when he is summoned, he can attack as many times as you want for that turn when he is summoned. This was supposed to be the reason why "the heavens twist and the the thunder roars" when he came out.
Ra gains ATK and DEF points equal to the number of dragons or dragon-type monsters you have on your side of the field x1000 because "he was the ruler of dragons" (because he was a dragon that looked super cool, so why not?). Also, he could target any or all spells or traps your opponent had on their side of the field and destroy them as well as completely negating any and all of their effects, because he was imbued with immense magical power which was why "spirits sang of him" and he "ruled over all that is mystic."
Obelisk gets ATK and DEF points equal to the number of monsters in your hand that you sacrificed to the graveyard x1000 added to his 4000 ATK and DEF points. You could just "regular" summon (normal summon) him, but you would just get his regular 4000 ATK and DEF. You had to be willing to "make sacrifices" to "honor him" if you wanted him to grant you access to this effect and use his full might after calling upon him. While he was on the field, your life points would be immune to damage from monster attacks or effect monster effects and you could only take damage if your opponent activated a spell or trap card that inflicted life point damage. (Because of how strong and buff he looked on the card, he was the "ultimate defender" and therefore could block any and all attacks from enemy monsters of any type or strength level.)
Also, I played where the gods were completely immune to any and all card effects, whether they were effect monster effects, spell effects, or trap effects, not just while they were being summoned, but during the entire time they were out on the field. Also, they were immune to being destroyed by battle, even if another monster gained higher ATK points than them; they just wouldn't be able to destroy that monster either and a battle between them would be stalemate (neither monster would die). (My logic at the time = they're gods, so they should be immortal and therefore un-killable). And I also had this rule where if someone managed to summon all three gods and have them out on their side of the field at the same time, they automatically win, like having the five pieces of Exodia, because they were so mighty that "their combined presence was completely overwhelming" (like exiting a dark movie theater and then stepping out into a bright noonday sun).

Well nowadays its really based on your idea of fun. Yugioh has become extremely competitive and if you wanna stand a solid chance in a competitive match you have to play the top tier $600 deck that's dominating everything else. If that's what you find fun then go for it, but if you want something thats not as intimidating and strategic but calm Yugioh may not be for you.

Here's a hard truth for modern players, the game is now SHIT. Back in the day, you had to think on your feet, you didn't have like 3 or 4 decks that everybody used so you never knew what you were getting into so you didn't always have a response and had to work around it. The game was also fun, not just the duels, the building part. You didn't have everyone using the same decks, you had creativity and people using cards just because they liked them. The game may have been slower but that was great, what's the point in spending hundreds on cards when you only use them for like 2 minutes per duel? I had duels that lasted like half an hour minimum and It was fun as every turn was different, control of the duel shifted. I respect that things change and move forward but this game went from being fun, creative and mentally stimulating to boring 2 minute duels using scripted moves that are used over and over with like 3 decks that everyone has. If you enjoy the game now, fantastic! But I just can't anymore.

Your opinion is quite validated, in fact I’m on your side on a few points. Although this video was more aimed towards the competitive scene. Like I play Magi the Gathering right. I have my $1800 artifact modern deck for competitive and I have my $20-$25 burn deck for messing around and having fun with the game. Like you can still play yugioh anyways you like man. And unfortunately most games including video games only look at the competitive side of the game and they forget about what made the game fun in the first place, as you mentioned. Basically what I’m saying is every games has two sides to it. The competitive side and the let’s have fun and try and win but we’re gona do it my way side (casual) I kind of hate the word casual idk why. But ya just my thoughts.

Specially since pendulums. Even synchros and XYZ weren't that bad. I remember having a great combo deck right before synchros came around. I have always been a returning player (I started back when I was a kid, then left, came back, left, came back, then left, and now I came back again) and I have been playing quite a bit to the ps2 and GBA YuGiOh games, and I can´t help but feel that even there were super broken cards back then, the game was more fun, and in some way, more balanced back then. Because I feel that the "I reveal my face down card" that was going on with the older generations was kind of cooler than whats going on today. And i can say that because I have been playing a basic Fire deck and a Zombie deck, both of them with some changes, and it´s super fun when I battle decks of the same era (even if they have the broken cards that are now banished or limited) but when I try to fight a more modern deck I get destroyed, and that, you "new" players like it or not, is having an unbalanced game. The fun of a trading game with dozens of thousands of cards is to be able to take cards from here and there and create a deck that has a very good synergy and is able to do its thing consistently. But as it is right now it seems that the game just leaves behind the old stuff not because it´s not cool, but because Konami bans the old cards that were good just to make people buy more new cards that can kind of replace the old ones. I dunno, at least that´s my point of view. I don´t mind tho, since I can play the old games with the old banlist and the good cards. I just don´t see the fun in being competitive to the point of playing just things that win. Cheers!

I got back into Yu-Gi-Oh in September. Luckily I had played some of the DS games and I understood how card rulings and such work. It was quite the climb, but I'm almost not a scrub anymore. All I really need is a physical deck to play and I'll be set. What I would suggest to anybody getting back into the game is to not be afraid of net-decking. Sure you should definitely make your own decks, but it helps a LOT if you learn how modern competitive decks work before you try to make your own

    • @sun9708
      @sun9708 8 лет назад

The way I see it, netdecking is more a way to learn trends and patterns in decks. You can take a few decks and see some similar or identical cards (Mostly techs and staples) that help make your decks more competitive. However, the best way to make a deck is from first-hand plays and such. Find out your own weaknesses and cover them.
However, netdecking whichever deck wins doesn't make you learn, to be honest. For example, that new stall deck; I cannot play DN ranked anymore because all I face are boring stall, exodia or Kozmos (I have not actually seen any of the other "meta" decks yet (This is coming from someone who had over 700 rating at one point). Nobody likes the guy who netdecks the winning deck, just like nobody likes the guy who steals someone elses art.
TL:DR; Netdecking is fine for new players to learn the basic structure of a deck, but not acceptable if you're just copying whatever deck just won because you think you'll win automatically.
It's like those people who netdecked PePe not terribly long ago despite the fact they had no idea how pendulums worked
Plus, the guy who won with X deck is considerably better than whoever netdecked them, you don't become pro by netdecking.

Not all returning players are scrubs. I'd think this video is geared towards giving up to date players a laugh than to actually help the older players. The first few minutes would of had someone actually looking for help to click off.
When I was a returning player (left during the latter half of GX, returned during the beginning of Zexal), I played my own variant of a Des Frog OTK. The first thing I did was correct an actual scrub on timing and OTK'd his Rank4 Utopia Deck.

    It sounds awful to me.

    • @alucard5841
      @alucard5841 4 года назад

well, i'm 2 years late to answer, but, the appel of the modern game is that is pretty fun to make the combos and pull out 5 extra deck monsters in a single turn, or in case you have a control deck, negate this massive extra summoning. every deck falls into the 3 categories of agro, midrange or control, but each archtype is unique and has their own mechanics and it's just fun seeing your deck doing the function it's supposed to. now i need to say old yugioh just felt way better, it was a lot simpler and much more friendly to new players. but hey, yugioh is the power creep game, and is suppose to grow stronger and more complex with every new set. if you prefer simpler games, try magic the gathering, it hasnt changed much since it's original release since it relies on mana and the few new mechanics are easy to get.

    • @alucard5841

Plus everybody having basically the same decks now or a limited pool of decks takes away the fun of building your ragtag deck and pitting it against others. That's what made yugioh fun when i was kid, the spectrum of possible combinations you faced when you played against others

  • @SkilledYetTalentless
    @SkilledYetTalentless 8 лет назад +12

All well and good, but there's one big elephant in the room, regarding this list. And that is that you can rectify almost every point on this list, and still be no better at the game. And it all boils down to this.
You need to build a better deck? How? What is defined as better? You've just been overwhelmed by thousands upon thousands of cards that you've never even heard of, and you're expected to rummage around in that heap blindly and find the cards that will make you that better deck? Because that what it feels like for a returning player. That overwhelming variety of cards is the most intimidating thing about, and it's knowledge of those cards that defines the good players from the bad.
Among the yugioh community I've seen hierachies formed around that very aspect, as well as money. And as a returning player you're stuck at the bottom of that heap, with nobody to help you make your way up.
What really should be said to the players is this. If you want to return to the game, find somebody who's willing to show you the synergies, the archetypes, the playstyles, the particular good cards, and their more situational varients. Test them out and give a feel for their play, without the pressure to buy the cards, at least until they truly know which cards are worth buying. Perhaps then one can start to build a 'better' deck.

That you can look up "Meta Yu-Gi-Oh Archetype" and easily find deck lists to make meta decks. At that point you just buy and read your fucking cards. It's true that there are ALOT of cards, but figuring out which ones are useful/viable is a simple google search away.

Those of us who have been in the game from the beginning and are STILL playing are gonna whip your ass with combo decks, archetype decks, ban lists, no ban lists... or whatever format. PERIOD!

I know I am late to the party, but I too agree with a lot of the comments about the tone of this video. I read your disclaimer about the jokes and not taking things seriously but the video still felt condescending and honestly made me feel like I didn't belong. I am 22 and it has been at least 10 years since I played and/or collected and I just started getting back into the game. I am doing my best to relearn and enjoy this game again, but when you shit on my paper mat or my lack of supplies because I just started up again, makes you sound snobby, entitled, and pretentious. For a kid watching this, or anyone watching this, coming back into the game, this video could easily bully someone into not coming back. Being 22, I already feel super insecure about playing this game again around my peers, so watching a video portraying the community beating me down as well doesn't stand up to my standards for your videos. I watch and love your videos, mostly because they help me, teach me. make me laugh, enjoy the game, and make me feel welcomed into the community of YUGIOH and TCG. This video sadly does the complete opposite for me. I am probably being way oversensitive, but perception is reality, and I believe a lot of other viewers feel the same. Thank you for your time, and remember I am not hating, just an opinion, because I really do love your videos.

NightcoreCentral ehhhh pendulums are actually not that hard to deal with. There are many many cards that people use in most decks that lock down pendulums such as solemn strike and twin twister. Also banishing is a huge huge weakness of pendulums!

YGO has gotten too easy tbh. Every card now-a-days has a crutch and I don't want to hear, well all you need to do is side this, NO! I don't want to hear that bullshit! Kozmo's can't be targeted, when the majority of cards in the game have target effects, and every time you get rid of one they have an effect to drawback on. Majespecters can't be targeted or destroyed by card effects and you get a search every time you summon one. Burning Abyss when they are sent to the graveyard, you get to use "so and so's" effect, with no limit on the amount of times you can use the effect. It's just more and more BS added every set and plz, don't even get me started on the banlist. If they aren't going to start hitting cards when they need to be hit, what is the point of even having one?

Sergio Sanchez It's a monster with a black frame and stored in the extra deck
And depending on its "rank" (the little stars it has)
It needs two monsters with the same level
an example would be the XYZ monster ,Number 39: Utopia
      It's a rank 4 so it needs 2 level 4 monsters
      Simple right?

      *XYZ-Dragon Cannon*
      "X-Head Cannon" + "Y-Dragon Head" + "Z-Metal Tank"
Must first be Special Summoned (from your Extra Deck) by banishing the above cards you control. (You do not use "Polymerization".) Cannot be Special Summoned from the GY. You can discard 1 card, then target 1 card your opponent controls; destroy that target.

it's not just old old returning players, even veterans of the game in 2007-2012 will have a very hard time adjusting to the stupid game mechanics like xyz exceeds where every archtype has 3 or more special exceed summon cards unique to the deck that you have to understand. Plus every archtype has it's own spells and effect monsters to read up on or else you won't fully understand what is happening. Draw 5 on turn 1 now not 6... Enjoy watching your opponent play solitaire with their hand and extra deck.
I quit because it's no longer the game I love. It's horrible like magic the gathering now.

Cross Dement Playing with friends doesn't really matter though lol they're assuming the old players didn't know how to read basic rules. the first 2 mins of the video was literally talking shit about us. I myself and many other people I knew back then actually knew the rules and topped several tournaments. I myself even went to tournaments on behalf of TrollnToad here in Kentucky. So you'd be surprised. but the same can be said for players these days. There are players out there that are new players and don't know half the shit they're doing when it comes to the game. Trying to be helpful to returning players is one thing, talking shit and acting like they're all a bunch of idiots is another.

It's not that they're arrogant, it's just so common hearing these things that it gets old. People ask their friends that play to get back in the game, expect to win with 10 year old cards, then get really mad and stubborn when they see the game has progressed. I understand if someone just wants nostalgia, but these are people assuming theyll be competitive. it just gets old, and i just got into the game last year after playing when the game first came out.

You weren't kidding when you said this game is expensive, I'm building a golden castle of Stromberg deck that is different then what's out but is gonna cost me around $650 and that includes a ln extra deck. And since my last cards weren't worth much, the cards I bought now are heavy hitters in the game and value. Recently went to a card store with my friend since we’ve been getting into old yugioh again and got some new cards from my other friend. Your reference has been Grade school.
That is sufficiently wrong. That was like 20 years ago for me.
You just mainly reference decks that were made in like 2000.
That's not a realistic look at the game.
Opposed to that, take a look at the last 10 years.
Cards did not change how they work.
The whole GAME changed how it works.
Multiple mechanic changes have been introduced in that "short" lifetime of the game.
They changed the game itself. And many didn't like it.
This isn't just a "old man yells at clouds" situation like you want to make it out to be.
    The game changed.
There is no more strategic plays in this game. You can't react to a play anymore.
You get your combo, you win. Your opponent shuts you down, he wins.
It's much more akin to gambling at the higher levels of play.
Which is what Konami wants to propagate.

Nope, if there is are scratches on your cards, you can get called for marking them and loose the game. If the text of the card is any way damaged or otherwise unclear you can't use the card. Deck boxes and sleeves are not required, but the tolerance level for damaged cards is so low they basically are. I am not kidding you can have a little slit on the side of your cards or some flattening on the sides from use, and without sleeves you can get called for having marked cards.

Because if you take good care of your shit, you don't want to take the chance that someone will fuck it up. If someone won't even take care of their own cards, you can't be expected to accept that they will take care of yours

It feels like an AA meeting with more than one of them in a video that’s not a skit

This is all true, i just got back into it after 10yrs, so i recreated the Blue Eyes deck in your other video (with some of my minor touches) as a nice intro deck back into it. And it got me far enough into a small weekly tournament to get into the booster prize pool. Thanks Team APS

+Legendary Niwatori the power creep isn't the problem is the inconsist power creep like having over a year of the same meta or changing it in 18 days

+Nooblet92Ca Yeah, well the only people who complain are the ones who try too hard to be a part of the Meta, or they focus too much on stopping the latest, strongest and fastest decks. Too many over-thinkers, that is the real cancer.

When I came back a year ago I hated the fact that I had to adapt to win. I'm still not all that good.

I don't mind that I would have to adapt, it's just that it's like a different game now than it was in the beginning. That's true for all card games. It has to be to not get stale. change is inevitable. I imagine I would be terrible also.

I feel like the way the game is going now. it's off putting to younger audiences you have to have an archetype that can cost 100 dollars for a deck than they have to buy all the accessories like a playmat and deck box and sleeves. Than a game ends in 1 turn maybe two and you need to be familiar with every cards rulings. there is so much to learn and the younger audiences can't get in the game because of this.

i ran myself back through the learning curve and now i realize how musc better this game is over how it used to be.
