      Team APS I started Yugioh when I was 3-4 years old back when it first came out and I loved the cards and the game, even though I didn't know shit about the effects or how to really combo. Today, I'm an adult and I have a far better experience and understanding of the game and I love it. That being said, I think the game/cards and their images are for at least 8+ however the game itself if you want to be a Competitive or even just be able to have fun is to be 16+
      I agree with what you said about collecting the cards until you reach 16 years old, than you're allowed to play lol

      Teens. YGO! was NEVER designed for kids, especially the manga. For the most part, the characters were about 14+. 4Kids dumbed things down more than the original anime did, so... *drops mic*
      BTW, I've judged Dragon Duels. They're fun because I get to see them use cards that I used to. Thankfully I have a lot of patience. :3

  • @DynamicReset
    @DynamicReset Год назад +1

    When I started playing at 7 the most complicated thing was a fusion summoning. And no one had an idea of what “rare” cards actually were worth anything, besides their print cost. I actually think that this game hooked me because of the (creepy) artwork in general, followed by the lore, game style, the anime, and just the fact that it was this mysterious Asian/Japanese card game fascinated me the most, it was exotic and outlandish - I wish they would bring this darkness back, but now and without Kazuki Takahashi this’ll probably never happen. If Konami creates a new card they kind of make sure it doesn’t has to be censored to begin with.
    The play style got so developed it needs a more developed mind to comprehend. Being more mature helps a lot here.
    The older this card game becomes, it sets itself out to be at least for a 18 yo or so, sure if you can actually make it being sold at 6+ why shouldn’t they do it (it creates more sales, advertising and marketing); kind of making a computer game and just adjusting it to make it more accessible to a younger audience makes sense. If you created a product creating more awareness about it brings you more sales. If the anime would be as horrifying that it only could be broadcasted at night, would have never lead them to their global success. Compromising with censoring standards a bit to make it possible to sell it worldwide, otherwise we never even heard of if in the western world.
    In a way it’s sold as a card game for kids but actually is a game for adults, but maybe that’s the trick to grow up with this game that looks much more exclusive to the outstanding person makes it much more fascinating.
    Comprehension wise a player should at least 12+ or so (if you are a total newbie to the game); maybe the 6+ is kind of a relict from the game when it started (where the most complicated card was Relinquished, but we’re not talking/playing starter deck Yugi, Joey, or Kaiba anymore.

    If it says "ages 6+" then its target audience is for kids and up.
    If a game says "rated M for mature" then its target audience is for ages 17 and up.
    The only main difference is the yugioh anime. The dubs are rated TV Y7 while the orignial anime is rated TV 14.

    • @bryanmerel
      @bryanmerel 4 года назад

      We can very attribute the problem towards western media's impression of card games and anime. They think its FOR KIDS. This makes a disconnect. In Japan Yugioh OCG is actually labeled *age 9+*, while the TCG is labeled *age 6+*. This disconnect is problematic As Japan having their policy of Japan first, will always design thr Yugioh card and effects for the target demographic of 9+(and actually 14+, since the anime is actually geared toward teems), while the west part will try selling it to childrens, with the mind set of "tRaDiNg CaRd GaMeS iS fOr KiDs~".

    • @bryanmerel
      @bryanmerel 4 года назад

      Also consider the farct that Asian media is pretty hardcore. We will have blood and gore, concept of death, mutilation, DEMONS, Angels, curses and forces of darkness, and its freakin just 13+. Heck, Kamen Rider, for HOW DARK THEY CAN BE, is just considered A CHILDREN SHOW IN JAPAN.

  • @dynamokota
    @dynamokota 7 лет назад +6

    Typically if a game has an anime, the protagonist is usually close to the target audience. For example, one reason Ash Ketchum is still 10 is that children roughly the age of 10 is the target audience in Japan.
    The youngest YGO protagonist was Yuma at 13, while the oldest was Yusei at 18. "Teenager" seems to be the target audience... In Japan.
    However outside Japan, I'm pretty sure they're trying to force a child (like, 6-12) demographic.

    • @dynamokota
      @dynamokota 4 года назад +1

      This is two years late to the discussion (I haven't even watched this channel in over a year) but whatever.
      Most of the YGO characters actually have had their ages confirmed.
      - Yugi's age is the only one not specified, but based on the age of his friends, he's probably around the age of 15-16 during the events of the main series. (He's 18 during DSoD, but technically, that's a continuation of the manga, not the anime)
      - Jaden is 15 in the first season of GX, 16 in season 2, and 17 in season 3 & 4.
      - Yusei is 18 during season 1, 19 by the time they enter the WRGP, and 20 during the end (when they're all deciding their futures; the 'adult' versions afterwards don't have their age specified iirc)
      - Yuma is 13 throughout the entire series
      - Yuya is 14 throughout the entire series
      - Yusaku is 16 throughout the entire series
      - Yuga is 11 (whether he'll age or not isn't known seeming we're only 8 episodes in)
      As far as demographics go, I looked into it, and there's no true "age range". The card game is targeted for "6+", basically saying "if you can read, you're the demographic", while the anime has never been clear. The only demographic we can truly discern with the anime is "teenage boys" because it's a shonen anime with usually teenage protagonists.
      *TL;DR The anime characters ages are anywhere from 11 to 20 depending on the series, and the demographic for the card game is never specified other than "6 and older".*

    I think the proper way is to introduce them is to start at "old" Yugioh. Use simple mechanics like back then. Later on if they stay interested, increase the difficulty of deck they use. Something with a little more brain power and help them out through this whole time with cards, maybe certain rulings if they come up, etc. After awhile, you can take them to a shop, but you have to tell them how it is. Not to where they get scared off, but just tell them that it's going to be very different than when you duel them and that people they verse will be very serious about the game. Always try to stay around them as well, Never leave them on their own at a event. Watch their matches when you can and afterwards give them pointers and keep them positive about it cause they will probably be mad, sad, or something when they first start out doing it. If they stay long enough to start understanding the complicated rules and get more serious, test them a bit on it to make sure they're ready and if they really wanna go through with it, let them. Still teach them through it all, but back off here and there whenever they show they've got it down a bit better. Not sure the age range but I'd personally only do it after 10 cause that's around the age that more critical thinking starts to happen.

    here some things you can't say about yu gi oh:
    1-"there is a cartoon about yu gi oh, and cartoons are for children". Yes, but actually no. There is even a cartoon about football, but this doesn't make football a game for children only.
    2-"It's a game, and game are for children". Chess is a game, but it requires a lot of strategy, which doesn't make it a game for children, the same is for yu gi oh, you need a lot of strategy, even before playing, because you must be able to build a good deck.
    3-"Children play yu gi oh". Well, I saw children trying to smoke cigarettes, but it doesn't make them a product for children
    4-"images of yu gi oh cards are for children". Even "family guy" or "Brickleberry" have a style which reminds us to cartoons, but if you saw them you can say that they aren't for children
    5- "on the pack it's written 6+". Clash Royale says "7+", but I saw adults playing it too. Other strange opinions??

    • @tyrous1743
      @tyrous1743 4 года назад

      Yu-gi-oh is most certainly a children's card game. Konami made the game with children in mind. They had no clue that adults who live with their parents still would start buying out cases and flipping the cards for profit.

    • @mistersadaimusic
      @mistersadaimusic 3 года назад

      These are all terrible arguments.
      1. Yes there is a cartoon, the cartoon premieres on specific blocks of television programming targeting the demographic of children at times of the day when they will be home from school and there to watch it. This cartoon's target audience is children. The way that people are exposed to yugioh and football are completely different, and the two should not be used for this comparison because comparing a contact sport, commonly used for the purpose of getting kids to exercise and move around while they're young to instill healthy habits, is incongruent to card games.
      2. I won't argue that games are for children. Adults play games. There are games rated M by the ESRB for a reason. There are plenty of table top games adults play. Barely anyone making an argument worth making is actually going to say this.
      3. Children play yugioh - again, because it's marketed to children. Cigarettes aren't marketed to children anymore because there are laws that prevent it. This is the most ridiculous of your points. Comparing trading cards to cigarettes. Kids weren't supposed to have cigarettes to begin with. The cards are readily available for them (or their parents) to purchase and play with as they please. I don't understand what your logic is here. It sounds like, "Kids do things they shouldn't do all the time." Yet that argument falls apart when the target demographic for the product is children.
      4 and 5 are dumb arguments I'm not even going to continue because it all comes back to the fact that it's a children's trading card game marketed towards children.
      Manchildren have co-opted this children's trading card game and Konami being the shitty company that is, constantly looking for ways to milk people out of money, have allowed these adult manchildren to turn this children's trading card game into a money sink, and Konami obliged by turning it into the broken mess that it is today. The reason Pokemon has the staying power it does is because it still appeals to kids and kids aren't getting bullied out of Pokemon by sweaty adult men in game shops like they are in the case of Yugioh.

    Back when my locals scene was way smaller than it is now, we had this kid and his dad come in. Kid was playing E-Heroes, Dad was playing just generic Blue-Eyes stuff. This was back when super poly was still around. They came down, got beat by us try-hards for what had to be months. One day he came up to me and said "hey, I want to go to this regional, can you help me rebuild my deck and teach me some stuff." So I did everything. Told him the bad news about some cards not really being good (because everyone needs to hear that at least once when they're starting out,) which he totally went with. We do some practicing, come regionals he doesn't do spectacularly but he did as well as us try-hards. We make him an honorary team member and go get dinner to celebrate. Now he plays ABCs and holds his own with the rest of us pretty consistently. Proud of him.

    I play the game with my little brother who's seven. He got into the game with the Yugi and Kaiba starter decks reloaded. Those decks were great for teaching the basic rules of the game with decks built around monsters kids would want to use. Now, we tend to use the decks from the Legendary Decks II box. I think a lot of the effects from those decks still go a little over his head. For example, he'll draw Red-eyes fusion turn 1 and hold it for the entire game. A big part of the issue is that he's not quite reading as well as he should be for his age, so he usually has to have the cards' effects explained to him, and I can't exactly do that with the cards in his hand until after the game. Still, he seems to have fun playing the game and is slowly picking up on basic strategies using the cards.
    On the contrary, we also recently got the Legendary Decks III box and we basically never touch those cards because of how obnoxiously complicated they are for him to understand. Once he starts being able to read more efficiently, I plan to help him start building his own decks instead of relying on pre-built ones.

    Recently subscribed, and I gotta say you guys are right it should say for an older age than 6. At a weekly shop tournament I go to there's a 4 year old who plays, and it kinda ticks me off because not only does the store let him, his mom lets him and he's got 5 SDY Dark Magicians but he treats his cards awfully. The one time I went up against him in a match I gave him several do-overs, including pulling a summon from the board. He openly told me that that day he was using a Link Strike starter deck that he'd added 2 cards to. Because he either can't read his cards or doesn't want to (I'm not sure which) he didn't know how cards like Battle Fader, Swift Scarecrow or Photon Thrasher worked in whole. In the end I did beat him (not because I'm cruel or anything) but because time came up in the round.

    I'm 30 and I'm currently teaching my 6 year old the game. I'm finding the hardest thing to teach is the game mechanics as a whole. I can feel his frustration and confusion when I correct his timing and plays, but it isn't beyond him. 6 years old is a great age to start learning. Competition can maybe wait a couple years. Another thing that maybe should've been touched on, is adults being picked on by their peers for playing a "kids" games. Personally I don't give a shit what people say, I do get annoyed however, when grown adults actually make it a point to give people shit about which hobby have. Your thoughts?

    Hey Team APS! Notification squad here!!! I wanted to say I remember getting the first Yugi and Kiba decks when I was 5. My step dad took the Kiba deck and I used the Yugi deck. He learned the rules and then taught me the rules. I didn't know how to read at the time so every time I didn't know what a card does I would ask him to read it to me. I then starting to memorize all the pictures of the cards. Until I was around 7 and was able to read the cards for myself I started to make decks out of our vast collection of Yu-Gi-Oh! ( Deck Formula at the time was 20 monsters 10 Spells 10 Traps) I built my triple Summon Skull and Soul Exchange deck against my step dads Fiend deck. I have been playing Yu-Gi-Oh! To this day with my step dad! As I'm turning 20 this year and my little brother is turning 6 I am buying him the new Link Starter Deck with Lime Green Sleeves (his favorite color) and his very own playmat. I feel like this game could be played by everyone who wants to play. But I do feel like younger kids need someone older to play with to understand the game better. And financially budget is something that kids can save thier allowance and get a amazon gift card. Thank you so much for your Content and I hope you enjoy this essay! :P

    I used to play pokemon tcg all the time. When I got bored one day, I decided to try out another card game. I heard about magic all the time, but wait, what's this one? "You gee ow? Nobody ever seems to talk about this one. I wonder what's it like?" I got duel links on my phone and played it. I chose Kaiba because I thought his name was cool, and because he looked kind of like me, and It was fascinating looking at all the cards. "Mahjong munia maidens" was one of my favorite cards. I liked the design of their silk dresses, and I thought its effect was really good lmao.
    After about 2 days of playing, I decided to try the actual game. Went to Walmart, found a link strike starter deck, and what's this? A Seto Kaiba starter deck reloaded?! Cool!
    Got home and I've been playing it ever since. I even found some other kids to play it with me at school. I love just about everything about this game. The designs of the cards, the amount of strategy and decision making needed to win, and the tv show and its characters.

    The day I started playing yugioh was when I was in elementary school (so yeah, I fit into that 6+ range) my dad got me a starter deck yugi, kaiba, and Joey (not at the same time... I think) but it was really more for educational purposes. (Too increase my skill in reading and math, and it did!). My opinion is, I think the age category is fine, and it can be used as an educational tool while creating these images from flavor texts and just the cards overall appearance. Truly tho, it just matters on the interest and maturity of whoever plays this card game.

    Yu-Gi-Oh came out for me when I was 13. I told my kids and wife I wouldn't mind if they played when they turn 13 that way they'll know to keep their cards safe and they can choose what they want to put in their decks after I give it to them. I made all my kids their decks already and my oldest kid is only nine so there's still some time left. my door is always open for teaching people Yu-Gi-Oh, I have binders people can go through and just take whatever they want to make their deck stronger. when I see kids at the tournament I try to make it fun for them and help them like I do anyone else, yeah I'll go a little easier on him so they can understand the game better and have a great time and when I have to make finishing blows I'll make it kind of like the anime so they have a great time even if they lose, but most of the time I let them win the only reason why they lose sometimes is because sometimes it's hard to lose on purpose. but I do agree I do believe they should be for 13 and up that way people can understand the value of their cards cards can be less damage because the people are older and they can respect their cards more

    I'm not a huge fan of Yugioh in general, I've mostly been watching this channel because I really like the passion and personality of the team. My take on the TCG world has been shaped by playing a handful of tcgs over the years. Pokemon, Digimon, Yugioh, MtG, Redakai...etc
    Personally, in terms of community and game balance, I think Pokemon has done a much better job in building a community that can host kids. But as a direct result, my local Pokemon TCG community seems to ONLY have kids and a few older oddballs like myself. (which is why I've stepped away.) It's disappointing that so many card shops either don't host events for Pokemon or seem to only have children in the local Pokemon community. Maybe Pokemon isn't bringing in business? its hard to say.
    Pokemon is streamlined, but still fairly strategic. The meta is smaller with the use of a rotation rather than a ban list, which means it is actually fairly easy to learn the meta and understand the majority of the cards you'll come up against in competitive. While singles can be pricey, I've never seen anything like in ygo/mtg and there are almost always viable budget options, with few exceptions, there are never cards that are required to play a competitive deck. The mechanics themselves are simple and you won't end up in the sea of errata, chains and obscure rulings. It just works.

I don't take him to the card shop or anything, but I bought him a £25 cyber dragon deck of Ebay and upgraded it. He's currently learning it (I gave it to him yesterday) and I helped him do a duel with my sister. He loves it, but for now does still need help.
    I think Yugioh is fine for children. Just don't take them to a card shop. I duel my brother with a dark magician deck thats pretty much three yugi decks (from legendary decks II) combined. Its a good fit. Not too complex and the duels never finish in one/two turns.

    I always wanted to play at locals as a kid in middle school but never made it further than beating the usual anime main character wannabe because I just didn't have money for a decent deck, even in highschool. Nowadays, I'd say without a couple hundred dollars it's pretty hard to compete against anything meta and that's facts. You can build a budget deck that will still need support from expensive cards to really be consistent and effective. That, and having experience using multiple different decks gives you knowledge of tech cards from seeing how card interactions work for yourself. I'd definitely say it's not for kids in the competitive scene unless they're being sponsored by their parents. There's just too many additional cards that people throw in nowadays that spice up their decks just to get an edge that it's really just inefficient to have a super budget deck in a competition (unless you're a pro whose main goal in a tournament is to mess with people and kill the meta). To really keep your deck relavent you actually have to acquire all the new cards as they come out, if they will help your deck. Otherwise you're automatically not playing meta and you'll probably be stomped.

    The original creator has said multiple times that he made Yu-gi-oh for children. The community changed it into what it is today. But Yu-gi-oh, at its base, is totally for children.

    I think the video games allow many younger people to join in the game, but going from that to the real game really needs some dedication. when I was like 11 I played with my ultimate insect deck and roid deck (for which I had to trade a bunch at school) against my friend who had an armed dragon deck and cyber dragon deck. We actually understood the rules and played decently with the cards we had. Maybe him having an older brother ordering some cards for us mightve helpen :')

    I'm a 23 year old female who still plays yugioh lol I love it because I bond with my friends and I have a way to relax and feel competitive at the same time. I think EVERYONE should play based on their understanding of wording and strategy. I'm planning on playing for a while until I own my own business.

    It certainly has shifted out of the 10 and under bracket. This is due to money, as all reasoning for Konami is, and it makes sense in this respect. It started taking more popularity around 2005-2006, and continued to do well. Then the lawsuit stuff pulled away attention, but Konami got full rights back and full control. From 2009 and on, they have been trying to follow the age group base up. They start making it more advanced to keep attention of players who tend to grow out of Yu-Gi-Oh and go to things like mtg. It's actually a smart strategy, you raise difficulty, tech, and speed to keep up with your current fan base. Alot of companies do this in alot of areas, some more subtle than others, and it works for the most part. This almost ensures that you will have a fairly stable number of people hooked for longer RATHER than try to get more and more new fan base by keeping up with ever-changing shows and media with the same Target: kids. The fact that they have a banlist over some rotating block format is also a good strategy, as kids can STILL be roped in and new fan base can be established. Sure it will be fewer and fewer due to said changing media and interest focuses over the years, but you've already got a pretty stable fan-base that you focus on.
    I'm saying all this more in response to people saying that Konami doesn't "care" about the fan-base. They certainly care about the fans who have grown up now. They are trying desperately to keep their attention. They care more than your parents. They care more than school counselor paid to care about you. They do the things they do BECAUSE they care, just not in the way you want them to. They care about you being interested and even more about their cash-cow players because of money. Heck, I'd even say they care most about your well-being; a sick/dead player is of zero value. If this doesn't convince you they care then you should look at the banlist. Sure, there are some cards that can be absolutely broken (even I will admit that), but let's be honest with ourselves; this banlist only gets utilized now to stabilize the meta. A stable, linear meta keeps the long-standing fans buying. If a card, archetype, or strategy would shake the meta in any way they immediately bring the ban-hammer down to either restrict it or kill it completely. In either case, they pull whatever concept that would have shook/changed the meta out of the picture completely. The only changes they want to the meta are things that they, themselves, put there that their main money spenders are interested in. Changes to the meta keeps the same core that these long-standing fans are accustom to. If something were to disrupt their play too much, or god-forbid OTK/FTK just a hard or harder than these meta players, their feelings get hurt and they may lose interest. Ban-Hammer Powers, Activate...all to keep everyone they care about hooked and indulgent.

    You guys missed something very obvious the whole entire time. You don't have to play competitively to have fun. I bet almost every player that has ever played has started with their friends, at a young age not following the rules at all.

    I think that when yugioh first made it's debut back in 2003, 6+ was appropriate. but the game grew up with that first batch of players.and its become especially hard for the original 6+ demographic to get into the current form of the game. especially after Pendulum and link monsters happened.

    When I have a kid, I'm totally going to teach them how to play and play YuGiOh with them if they enjoy it. I would also fully let them play in Dragon Duels. And to start I'll get them some stuff, but if they want to play competitive with an expensive deck, they'll have to work for it somehow. That's my opinion.

    I bought my son who is 8 a couple of starter decks for Christmas and i am teaching how to play. OOOO boi it is a struggle and half to teach the rule an regs of the game. He wants to play the way i played when the game first came out. It takes a lot of patience to teach younger players the game.

    Back in 2004 I was playing at Valhallas game shop in Denver; and had my ass handed to me by a 8 or less year old kid. He was an example of well funded. He had the best tech and most annoying monsters at the time; I on the other hand had no meta for the most part and never even considered that buying online was a thing.
    Losing to Jinzo and random other cards all rare or rarer as the theme seemed to be is stupid and frustrating.At that time I was 19+ years old.
