    This is a brilliant video! Totally agree with the ridiculous over pricing of current leading golf tech. £400+ for the leading drivers while you test one at £20 gives an indication of just how over priced the golf market is becoming.

    I took up golf after a 35 year break earlier this year. I had one of these drivers and used to hit it a fair old way at times. Summer time I swapped my clubs for Ping G425s. Great video Rick. Yes we pay way too much. I got fitted last year for the 2017 M2 and had to pay the fitting cost, build cost, non-standard shaft on top on the cost of the M2. Cost me a bundle. However, I'm loving how I hit it so it's hard to argue over the cost but was darn expensive.

Long live the budget clubs for people who dont care about brands, can't afford the big names, and just want some fun on a golf course. I played from 2004 to 2015 with the slazenger 460cc driver and what it done for me was to improve my strike from the middle of the club face, strictly because the sweet spot is so small, then I bought a Callaway 2013 Razr black second hand and omg what a difference. But thanks to the slazenger for giving me that swing for the driver.
    I would probably never buy a new driver as the price is nuts. I still play with the 2013 Callaway black edition today. I've tested the new ones last week and I can't see any improvement. Maybe a custom fit might get me a few more yards but again for the price not worth it. Oh and the 2013 Callaway razr black cost me £40 off gum tree in 2015. Bargain golf at its best.

    Lets face it - golf is stereo-typically portrayed as a game for middle aged rich guys. But that probably isn't without good reason, and 'all the gear - no idea' was, I believe, first used in this sphere.
    Given the performance in this test, a lot of wealthy guys, who will never ever be good at golf, could save themselves a boat load of money by avoiding the high end expensive kit. A few yards of carry is unlikely to turn a pumpkin into a Prince.
    But maybe that is like telling wealthy middle aged females that the latest-greatest-world-beating cosmetic product for L'Oreal won't actually get rid of their wrinkles ?
    Thanks for the video.

      ran doshus. Hi, having come back to golf after a long time away I tried loads of balls. For me feel wise the old balatas closest match today is something like the taylormade project a or the callaway chromesoft. Funnily enough I find these way too soft to play now on the course. If you have never cut the cover off an old wound ball and bounced it around you haven't lived just be prepared to clear up the mess 🤣

    My first set that I bought was for school. I choose golf as sport in college. It was the less expensive way to learn golf for me and we could borrow golf set but I wanted to have my own. So I bought myself at a garage sales an iron set for 2$ each, a putter for 10$ and I’d go to Walmart and bought my brand new 20$ drivers. That drivers was about the same quality as the Slazenger. And it last me one years or two. But for start, I recommend to buy this or a good second hand golf set. You can have a really good second hand set for about 150$-200$ with the bag, balls and if you are lucky a good pair of shoes. Never go for the brand new set except a Slazenger like at first. Put money in lessons and practice balls.

  • @e99783
    @e99783 6 лет назад +12

    Rick, suggestion for your vlog: How "limited" are "limited flight" range balls? This quesiton affects most golfers. One of the main purposes of a driving range is to determine how far a person hits their various clubs on average so that when they play they have some idea about which club to choose for any given shot. However, most driving ranges (here in the USA, I assume elsewhere as well) use what are called "limited flight" range balls which do not fly as far as "real" golf balls such as the Pro V1s you typically use in your golf club tests. My question is, how much distance do you lose when using a range ball for each of your clubs so we can do the math and calculate the approximate performance of range balls vs. real balls.

    • @jamesharrison5004
      @jamesharrison5004 6 лет назад

      Book a Trackman session to do your yardages. You can't tell where your ball lands out on the range.

    • @e99783
      @e99783 6 лет назад +1

      That’s a good suggestion but, renting a trackman every time you change your clubs or your swing or you come back from a break from golf is expensive and inconvenient for most people. The range may not be as accurate as a trackman but how did people determine their yardages before trackman was invented? The range.

    • @jamesharrison5004
      @jamesharrison5004 6 лет назад

      Jeez how often were you doing any of that? A Trackman session is only £35. You can always do your yardages on the course.

    • @e99783
      @e99783 6 лет назад +4

      I honestly don't understand people like you. What do you have against simply letting the average golfer know the difference between range balls and real balls? Do you have some financial interest in preventing golf consumers from having this information? Perhaps you sell Trackman devices or you work for a company that sells golf balls. I can't imagine any other motive for you arguing this point.

    • @jamesharrison5004
      @jamesharrison5004 6 лет назад

      All range balls are not the same. Golf is about accuracy and the only way to do it properly is with a decent launch monitor. Ok you could go in a field measure out 250y and mark every 10 yards back towards you, then work through your bag. I'd ranther just pay for a trackman session personally.

  • @jamesadcock5235
    @jamesadcock5235 6 лет назад

    The one for £25 with red shaft I have that and it sounds awful but if u hit it right it's not too bad. I also have a top flite driver that cost £100 and is so much better. I always blame myself not the club's and u just proved it. I'm a beginner I'm who these clubs are aimed at. I hit it about 210yrds so I could realistically get to 250yrds with a £400 driver. I'd rather improve my game and hit it 250 with a cheap club and save £380 or spend that money on lessons

  • @adamstubbs4376
    @adamstubbs4376 6 лет назад +11

    Yes Rick!!! Love it. These are the kind of tests that we need more of. Cant believe that last shot, and yeah of course when you pay £400+ for a driver you are just paying for the name, theres no way any component on it is worth £380 more than that driver you tested. "That" shop also do another Slazenger driver for like £60, with a decent Grafflaoy graphite shaft and a Lamkin grip, crazy cheap. Can you go back in and pickup one of the wedges (V500 or something like that), true temper shaft, lamkin grip, £24.99! Please test them!!!! And for the record the most ive spent on a club is £40 2nd hand, just cant justify the cost of top notch gear that doesn't really gain me anything.

    • @lizard3994
      @lizard3994 6 лет назад

      You are'nt just paying for a name and more quality components you are paying for the millions in R and D that company has put into getting their products as good as can be year after after year (depending on the companys club release cycle) let alone the cost of sponsorship etc, but l do agree that they can't be worth as much more as they are.

He tried to hit it over the fence at LGA (which did not happen). It had a graphite ladies shaft in it. I was so afraid he would break it, but it did survive. It did not go very far (I instantly gained 30 yards of distance when I finally bought my Cobra FlyZ), but it was a good driver to learn with, because the shaft was slightly shorter which gave me good control over the shots.

    I buy new drivers. However they are always the driver from the last 2 years. My current driver is a Taylormade R15 which I bought for £120 black Friday deal 2 years ago. I think you can get value but you have to go back a season or 2, and as a 12 handicapper I play for fun but want to play as well as I can. For my level a new but outdated driver makes good sense!

    I know I'm over 18 Months late to this video, but.....would love to have seen a blind test with a guess of the price once used, I know it's a cheap club but it's under £20. I would buy 5 pints of beer for £20 and not even question it. I know it's not the best. And I wouldn't expect it to be but wow. Think this has done great for the price

    It would almost make sense if you were afraid your fave driver would get damaged in transport if you were to go on holiday far away, to just get to your destination and go find one of those”disposable drivers” and just leave it there when your done with vacation

    I'm brand new to golf. I got a second hand set of Ping i3 irons & wedges from Gumtree for £100, which also came with a TaylorMade Fairway Rescue 3 wood and 4 wood. I then went to Sports Direct and bought this exact driver for the same price, and a £10.99 putter. They'll do me just fine while I'm learning, and once I get a bit better, I might look at a better quality of club. Thanks for the video, enjoyed it.

    The difference between 20 and 400 pounds is quite a bit more than "a little bit extra." I totally agree with others in wanting more reviews of middle price-point equipment. Keep up the good work!

    I'm sure everyone would love to know just how far you'd drive a ball with this clubhead on a shaft fitted to you... is there any way you could make this happen with a bit of magic? I suspect it wouldn't be too far off premium drivers

    Rick, I think that you should retest the Scavenger after you have used your golf.pro skills and re-shafted it with a shift the more suits your standard, doesn't take to be expensive (I've had some good ones from eBay, Gamola and Hireko etc.)

    80% of my clubs are second hand cuz the ball doesn’t know how much you’ve paid for your clubs. I’m still using the Ping Rapture driver and it’s been known to leave me eagle putts on par 4’s over 300 yards. My whole set from driver to putter is about the same price as one new epic driver and yes they’re all “name brand clubs” Now that I think of it, I should be doing the second hand challenge with Rick and Pete lol

    Good video. Spend less on equipment and more on lessons.
    My local recycling centre has a re-use shop. £2 a wood, £1 an iron.
    I think you could spend a tenner kitting yourself out and still beat 99% club/weekend players Rick - you're a PGA pro because you are gifted with a club and put in the practice.
    A 2k iron set and driver doesn't buy you a tour card.
    Keep up the good work 👍

    I'm just finding this, but I really appreciate this type of video. My current clubs are a Wilson boxed-set, the whole thing totaled roughly $400 which means each individual club would cost about this much (when you factor in the bag & everything that came with it). Its nice to see how a club like this performs with you, and think of where I can go from here. My drive is slightly shorter than you're hitting this on most shots, but I've rung up to the 270-290 carry range a few times. Point is, I'm planning to get fitted this winter, and it gives me some hope for where I can get once I get some proper equipment.

    When I first started, I went through a couple drivers in that price range. I caved in the face on both of them and ended up buying a TM Burner. I actually hit the cheap drivers a lot better than the Burner, but it lasted a lot longer.

    Makes one think that after hitting just 5 shots with this driver he hit it 284 yards. Surely Rick can hit it consistently to this number with more usage of this driver. Leads me to the question have golf clubs changed so dramatically to warrant the exorbitant price

    Hi Rick, it's amazing what that £20 driver was capable of. I have two questions.Would a mid handicapper be able to play with that club, and are the modern breed of drivers really worth nearly 25 times more? Love to know your thought's.

  • @PkGam

    I think you found your new gamer! ;D
    But joking aside, it does go to show that it's the player and not the club. Having playable clubs at that price point is pretty awesome as they get you out playing. Durability is definitely a concern, but since it is so cheap, it's pretty easily replaceable for however long it may last.

  • @Drum8888

Got it delivered to work, managed to cut my thumb at work the same day and ended up in hospital, 2 weeks when the finger was healed UK went in to lockdown and no golf for a month, ended up in hospital with covid for 12 days and needed a few weeks to recover but will try it this week. :)

    I started out with a mixed matched set from a local thrift store and a $35 driver from big 5. Didnt see the point of risking buying a new expensive set just to find out golf wasn't for me. More than enough driver for beginners who wouldnt be seeing shaft snapping swing speeds any time soon anyways.
