Series idea: build a bag for various budget levels and discuss why you picked what you pick.

Bought a $200 Top Flite set from Dicks first set ever. 6-pw, 4, 5 hybrid, driver and 3 wood. I've played at least 40 rounds of golf this year. With that being said the irons are great. I didn't like the 3 wood, driver or hybrids. I have replaced those with used brand name clubs for around $160. Starting out I think its all about testing everything and eventually upgrading to a high quality set. Once you've dialed in your game and on what you like or prefer as far as shafts are concerned.

My biggest recommendation as someone who started about 5 months ago, grab a lose preowned iron 7 or a 8, and maybe a 3 wood. Watch some videos on how to hit irons and woods, go practice a few times and if you see yourself doing this. If golf isnt for you youre out maybe 100 bucks. Slowly add to the bag, driver then a wedge like 52 to practice chipping. Take a few lessons, my first lesson my coach just had me on my lose 8 iron. Finally round out your bag with some super pre owned set of irons for like $200-300 bucks (i found a set of ping g25s for $200 4i-GW). For my current bag I spent like 382 bucks which I have spread over the course of 5 months. Taylor Made Burner driver 08, Taylor Made R11,Ping G25 Irons, Calaway Mac Daddy Forge 52, Ping Super E Sigma. As long as youre using named brand clubs pre owned doesn't matter, they were good enough at one point good enough for you. I bought all my clubs from PGA so I got to try them all out, which really helped my experience. Also the deals are amazing.

American Golf sorted me out a few years ago for £300, Titleist 913D Driver, Ping i15 irons, 2 boxes of Srixon AD333, 2 Mizuno gloves and a bag of tees. I wasn't new to golf but I'd had the same gear for 20 years and was trying to get back into it. Golf is an expensive sport but bargains can be found. Now because of Covid I've spent soooo much money on clubs (out of boredom) that I've got a good set of irons for £475 (really seeing the benefit when we can play that is), last year's Tour Edge driver for £185, new wedges for £90, a £350 cart bag for £110, and a £300 trolley for £125. All excellent and good deals but it still adds up. Roughly cost £1000 but a saving of around £800. Point is spend the money when you're going to see the benefit, second hand all the way if you're new to golf or on a budget. And don't waste your money on a 3 wood when you start playing.

    it's all about personal preference.
I built a second-hand set about 10 years ago after using a budget beginner's box for 4-5 years. My goal at the time was to get quality, nice looking clubs for the best price I could get. Settled on MacGregor M675 irons, Callaway Steelhead III woods, and Taylormade xFT wedges (which had come out about a year prior)
I'm still happy with my picks, except the wedges offer NO FEEL, so I'm in the market to upgrade. I'm looking into more second-hand wedges.
My point is to go for what gives you the most enjoyment out of your round. Don't spend 2-grand on set if you're not at that level. It will only upset you. Spend more if you think your skill is beyond a hokey box set. And always look for that 1 shot you can be proud of per round.

I recently got back into golf. I played as a kid with my dad. I looked around and decided to go to Callaway's pre-owned website for the clubs and ebay for the bag. 625 spent on clubs and about 50 for the bag.
    Clubs:
    Big Bertha Fusion - Driver & 3W
    Callaway Steelhead XR 4-PW, SW
    Odyssey white hot RX #1
Bag: Ping Hoofer (not sure which one but its not new) Looks like a houndstooth print or something. Came with an Arizona country club logo. Because that's gotta improve my credit, until they see me swing!
I have added and swapped some things since original purchase. I swapped the 3w out for an epic and got an epic 5w as well. I picked up the AW for my iron set. and i swapped the putter out for an odyssey O-works black marxman.
I also just purchased the 2019 PM grind wedges in 56 and 60, but i havent even been able to use them as my golf course was ravaged by a COVID-19 Quarantine.
I have been looking into hybrid clubs lately as well. I have no experience with them, but the research ive done seems interesting. I may replace my 5w and 4i with a 3&4H. Not sure and this would be something down the road for me.
My goals at the moment are to get my swing dialed untill i am completely comfortable. Then go in for a round of lessons at a fitter on the machine. To dial in my swing further and get club info for moving forward. I may do some reshafting at the end of the lessons, and i may be looking into hybrids after that point. But i want to see it on the machine.
By the way, Thanks Rick. Your the reason i can hit my driver straight. And why i have my 10.5 turned down to 9.5 and am still confident. I was just getting massive spin and pop from 10.5. Combined with the bad grip i had (trailing hand over the top too much) had me hitting open and fading shots like a wild man. My dad said i was swinging to hard. I found out it was grip and club path, am fixing both and its looking good!

3 years ago. I bought my brother budget kit of clubs to golf with me when on vacation. the VERY FIRST shot he took from the 7 Iron. it snapped at the hossel. from there on out, he just used mine and our game was to break this 120 dollar set as soon as possible. we snapped the 3w on its second hit, and the 5i, 9i, pw and sw within 16 holes on the next day. get the premium 8 year old hand me downs. theyll last for a few years and wont snap because of the cheap materials. theyll wear out before they do that.

If youre a research guy who enjoys watching dozens of youtube videos and has the time to do the research, buying used is a great way to go...used golf clubs will always be a buyers market because so many golfers have to have the latest and the greatest. I cant recommend GigaGolf enough. I played their irons abd hyrbid and they're awesome and $20-50 per club and custom fit.
I currently play a set of 2014 Nike Vapor Pro 2 blades i got in great condition for $160 total. But the problem with preowned is you need to not need them to find the best deals. You cant rely on preowned unless you get lucky or have someone who knows what theyre doing looking on ebay.
For true newbs, the box set and gradual upgrade is the way. And a better putter is the first upgrade.

I bought the Callaway Edge set, which is a fantastic set for the price to pay. Played with it for a year already.
Decided to see what a fitted driver would like for me now, so a fitter got me the new Callaway Epic Speed LS with a HZRD 60 stiff (forgot some of the details).
Comparing my Edge to the Epic Speed, I noticed that distance-wise the Epic Speed got me on average maybe 5 yards more carry distance and a tighter dispersion. I think eventually a fitting WILL be worth it, but at my current skill set, I cannot maximize the upgrade just yet.
So I think for me personally, as someone who is starting again after a long time, the Edge is good enough for me until I get better. And the best investment to put in is always lessons.

In my opinion, buying second-hand golf clubs gives you access to good products at an affordable price, no matter what handicap you have. I prefer without a doubt those that I currently have, which are from recognized brands and models such as Taylormade R1, Callaway X22 irons, Ping i20 3 wood, Oddysey # 7 putter and Cleveland RTX588 wedges that have an average of 8-9 years old, than new ones of the entry level type or of less recognized brands such as Slazenger, Spalding, Golden Bear, Costco, etc.

But I can already start to see that I want a decent set by the end of the year... Callaway or something like that.. but spending the money on those straight up I wouldn't have been sure how much I was going to like golf. Originally I was getting clubs to use at the driving range just to get out.. now I want to play proper at a course.

I’ll shoot 1-2 under on a good day, and high 70’s on a soso day. I would love to have a whole new set of clubs, but not sure they would actually improve my game. The irons are pretty weak lofted, but I know the distances very well on them. I’ve “learned” my clubs, I guess you could say. Any thoughts?

Have Mizunono irons (from 2004; $500) Go back and forth on getting new, fitted irons. It's not going to help. My issues are ball striking and short game.
And I know how long I hit each iron by now
Iron specifics and even ball type are miniscule for the 0 handicap where one tweek can be the difference between 69 and 70 or how they finish a tournament.
5+ handicaps need improvement in their game/swing but probably not their equipment

I started on a set of Dunlop clubs and then got my dad's set of Wilson's that were much better, after he got his Nike's. I just recently upgraded to a set of older Callaway Warbirds and they are miles better than the Wilson's. I am considering buying a brand new set of clubs though, and am considering a budget set, as I can't afford some of the higher end sets I'd really like to get.

The price goes down so fast on used clubs that buying a set that's a couple years old that are premium clubs is the way to go. They are maybe 1/10 of 1% less than the latest and greatest if that.. Where budget clubs are or a lot less club particularly in the shaft. So I would always tell people buy good clubs used if you want to save some money 100% of the time.

It's way more fun to get slightly older clubs. But you need to know what you're doing. I didn't know I needed a 3 wood and a bunch of wedges. Either way, when you get the budget set of new clubs, you will be buying more clubs to fill it out.

I buy budget clubs at Dunhams because I haven't even been golfing a year, and I'm not gonna spend good money on a club when I'm still learning. I need cheap/used/hand-me-down stuff to beat the living shit out of while I'm still figuring out how to play.

I needed some new clubs so based on what Rick and other RUclipsr's have said, I went and got all brand new Benross gear: Delta Irons 5-PW with KBS Stiff shafts (£199), HTX Compressor Driver (£55), HTX Compressor R 3 Wood (£50), HTX Compressor Hybrid (£25). All the woods came with Kuro Kage stiff shafts and something I didn't expect, it all came with a 3 year warranty.

Iv had benross in the past , and bought some new benross wedges in the sale last yr ... I wouldn’t call benross budget as they are made with high end components often in found in premium brands .... only thing I found is the finish on them isn’t as good as premium brands ... but the newer models maybe better

I think if you’re just starting going out and spending 5k on clubs is a little crazy but if you got the money go for it. But like Rick said you can get some good used clubs that are a few years old for fraction of the prize. That’s what I’ve done and i love my set. But it’s really up to the player and their finances

Got 2nd handclubs last year. Too me the difference in the woods and hybrids were very different for me.. My now higher quality 2nd hand hybrids are wow different. Maybe 20 yards and way more forgiving. Driver justfeels better and invokes confidence.. Irons for me wasnt great huge difference because i went toa more blades set. I love em but still hit ups and downs with them more. Can work them better and pitching chipping touch is better. But not so forgiving in days i have to often.

Picked up a set of used Callaway Razr x irons a couple weeks ago. 100x better than the top flites I had. They are from 2011 , Only paid $200 for the set and they looked like they only went to the range a few times (mat rub on the sole of the club) and that's it. Best $200 I've spent in a long time.

You can't buy a game I've never been fitted for clubs, Never had lessons, Wasn't a range rat, just played, played and played some more. Chip and Putt at home, got to 4 and have shot a 64 with 8 clubs Par 68. Best wkend ever was a -3 and -2.

I’ll be totally honest… A $100 dollar putter will get you the same results as a $600 dollar scotty camron putter … you just gotta build a long Quality relationship with ur putter.!! Don’t always be changing putters… stick with one…. And don’t believe all the hype on all these expensive putters… it’s just a Gimmick.!! ALL HYPE.!!

  • @PetSKi67
    @PetSKi67 3 года назад

In the beginning, it is not that much of a difference, if you’re a total beginner. Budget clubs will sell for about the same, they were worth to start with, if you pass them on the first season.
However after a couple of seasons, You defenately want to have something, that’ll build confidence and are reliable to deliver, what you execute. Learning how to swing a club is not about how whippy or poor set you have, but how you use your body in order to deliver the club head.
After a while you gain understanding and figure out things. Buying a budget set is a starting point, whether it was a new full set or second hand collection. For the first season the ball basically has a mind of its own. Then you may need a better set to better suite what you’re doing with your swing.
As in all skills sports, a skilly beginner can make things happen, a worse woun’t. In a case, where person of no athletic nor ball game background starts golf, it is quite possible a quality premium set would do no, if any difference.

Torn on this, just stumbled across a fake Scotty and it’s the best putter I’ve ever used and I have about 20 putters from an Odyssey Oworks1w, daddy long legs, craz-e and a 1a. Think what I’m saying is I might have paid £200 for a Scotty and hated it so budget worked for me! Also got all my wedges from charity stores and love them! I personally would never pay for a brand new club of any sort. ( maybe that’s why I’m s**t at golf)

Picked up an Epic Flash Sub Zero "used" for about half off retail, couple scuffs on the bottom and I'd guess it goes just as far as it did last year when it was new. $280 US isn't budget per se but it beats paying $500-$700 US for the newest piece that will be in the "used" bins at the end of the season for half off.

    Some good off brand names
Pinhawk(very good one length irons and woods, maybe a good video in the future to compare to the Cobra OL irons?)
Hireko golf (solidly built irons that are cheap($30~40 per head), come with good shaft options, AND can be custom ordered.
In the market, I feel used drivers and putters will do better than the off brands (picked up a KING LTD for $100. Unsurprising to most, that thing is still a missile launcher) and finding a good putter used is a matter of looking.

Really starting to think all of golf marketing and club fitting is a joke for 90% or more of golfers. I’m sure that most golfers could game a 5-10 year old set of ping irons and see almost no different over a brand new set. I’m sure the newest long clubs could see a a marginal benefit of more forgiveness and wedges see the benefit of fresh grooves, but other than that it’s bs. Putters are honestly of no difference other than mental perception. The major monetary benefit for most players would be lessons and a range pass.

I think if you’re a high handicapper you won’t get as much of a benefit out of expensive clubs. The better you are the more advantage you’ll see. Use budget clubs until your say an 18 handicap with a decent strike and then get fitted into some good clubs.

    • @onevish

Coaching lessons will make you less terrible 1000x quicker than a new set of clubs.
I had a set of Stratas as my first set. Last year I started playing more and had several more lessons to work on technique and then I felt the clubs were holding me back. Bought some Callaway XR OS’s and after a couple of weeks I noticed an improvement in distance and flight path but crucially more forgiveness. I play better now but a lot of that is due to the lessons.

It's hard to find a good deal on clubs. At the end of the day, gear doesn't matter that much. I use a 20 year old set of Spalding Executive Irons and a 410CC driver and still shoot mid 80s using cheap Kirkland golf balls. Unless you're like 5 handicap or less, it's probably not worth getting fit or buying budget clubs.
