IMO while he can be technically correct, it's still not a good take. Apple could've easily given non-pro models at least 90hz screens but ship them with 60hz by default, so all the grannies of the world could still enjoy their jittery 60hz and slightly better battery life, while people who care about fluidity (which i've always assumed are all the people with functioning eyes, but apparently not) at least had a middle ground option (90hz is not as good as 120hz in a vacuum, but it's still leagues better than 60, and due to how aggressive apple's implementation of adaptive refresh rate is, steady 90 wouldn't even be much worse overall) - a win-win for everyone (except apple). But of course they (apple) wouldn't do it, they are saving every dollar they can while simultaneously trying to upsell you on pros.
But the worst part is the more people defend them on this, the longer they can get away with underselling you, a consumer. It's always weird for me to see how people defend billion-trillion dollar corporations who screw them over (not only apple, but for some reason it happens the most with apple).

Here's the thing though, charging a phone $800 (even more in Europe where I live in) that lacks a feature that you can find in $250 phones is simply not fair. If it was $600 then sure, you could say "well they have to cut some corners to get to that price and still offer an incredible chip, a great camera yada yada yada" . And I think if 120 Hz screens were more widespread within the average user market then I think more people would see the difference against 60 Hz.
If we go by this "average user won't care" narrative then surely we can say that the average user won't be able to tell the difference between the A17 and the A13 chips, just like they wouldn't be able to tell the difference between iPhone 15's camera and iPhone 11's camera, which means they don't need the latest and the greatest chip, or the best camera, or the best battery and so on. By this logic Apple would release the iPhone 3GS every year just with slightly updated internals and Samsung would still sell the Galaxy S2. And I would still be using a flip phone.

Yeah it's crazy that my $650 phone has waaay more features, better cameras, of course more freedom and customization because android. And ofc it has 120hz (AND higher ppi!)
I'll admit apple silicon is pretty damn good and exceeds anything found in an android phone to some extent, but the amount you sacrifice for that, both in features and high price, just isn't worth it.

We in the tech community are sometimes so passionate about the specs and every new details that we forget that a lot of it doesn’t matter to the average consumer. I’ve experienced that first hand with my family, time and time again I would push the better phone because of things like the refresh rate. When all that explaining would do was confused them even more. There is a reason why the 15 exists and why Apple is so headstrong on 60hz on it.

Does it do the smartphone thing (text, call, mobile games, video streaming)?
It it better than whatever iPhone they have now?
Does it last? (they keep each iPhone about 4 to 5 years)

I don't agree with this at all. You could make the same argument about almost any feature added to phones in the past couple years, particularly the camera related ones. Just because customers don't recognize the difference immediately in the store, doesn't mean they won't grow to appreciate it down the road. It's about creating a better experience for the consumer, which they will appreciate in its totality even if they can't name the various technologies at play.
For comparison, it wouldn't be okay for LG to sell a brand new upper-midrange TV in 2023 without HDR, even though the average consumer doesn't know exactly what HDR is or how to recognize it. Most modern content still looks better on an HDR display, and it looks better to everyone - not in terms of a side to side comparison with a non-HDR version, but in terms of the impact a scene has on the viewer as it plays. It's a similar thing with screen refresh rate.
That just leaves the "Apple exists in a vacuum" argument, but again, that could apply to almost any feature. Why criticize the iPhone for not having fast charging when Apple isn't competing with faster charging phones? If anything, it should be the tech press's job to let consumers know what they're missing. Not to convert them to Android, but to hold Apple's feet to the fire, to force them to compete. Competition is better for everyone.

I'm glad you made this video. Tech content creators get trapped in their bubble and certainly cannot relate to most "everyday" consumers most of the time. Just this week, my mom asked me what was different between her 13 pro vs the new 15 pro, and I even with the changes I mentioned, she kind of had this "so what, why do I care about these changes" look about her. She really didn't even need the 13 pro she has now to be honest. While there will be those who get the pro only for the Pro moniker, or because their cell provider was running a promotion, I know friends/family who couldn’t tell me what model they have. Mainly because their major concern is “does it do what I need it to do?” I follow the Apple News, but I’m also rocking a SE gen2, because at the time I got it, the flagship didn’t have enough going on for the price FOR ME. Ironically, this sort of communication dissonance is what we are taught to fight against at Apple. Is it self serving? Yeah, but it’s also counterintuitive in terms of upselling. Apple stores prioritize customer satisfaction, so they really pushed learning about people, and what things actually mattered to them.
That said some of my favorite conversations were when I actually got to compare other brands to iPhone/Mac. There were times when I would recommend a PC or Android, and help the customer spec it out on an iMac in store. It wasn’t a secret.
I remember being told by one of my managers that Apple isn’t for everyone, and it’s ok to land on that conclusion. If that’s the case, help them to the extent you can. They’ll leave happy that they came in, they’ll have some trust in the brand and “our people”, and they’ll come back to see YOU.

100% this. There’s a reason why the Apple stores are always so packed. Yes, a lot of it has to do with how much people gravitate towards Apple’s products, but another aspect is the people working there. If Apple had terrible customer service, there wouldn’t be a demand for brick and mortar stores, and everything would be sold online. But the people working at Apple are passionate about the products and want to share their knowledge with others.

Here's the thing. It's more about the difference between 120Hz and 60Hz. Once you feel the high refresh rate, you can't go back to a lower one without noticing the sluggishness. I completely agree that the target audience of the regular iPhones don't really care about 60Hz or 120Hz, and to Apple as a business, if that cuts costs, it works just as well. Though I'd say it's Pro - customer to include 90Hz or 120Hz to the base iPhone so the the non-tech-savvy ones can feel the joy that we experience from scrolling as well. It's worth noting that it's the Pro iPhone that sells the most according to your data. Overall, well-made and credible content from Jern as usual.

So for some users, refresh rate is still an important aspect for a valid reason. But yeah, no need to get so mad at one single spec. And also, if you expect a phone company to put all the state-of-the-art hardware in their Pro line-up you probably shouldn't buy from Apple

Jern is 100% correct. As a techie I chase the latest specs and benchmarks and assumed that the entire world cared as well. Then I spent a day at an Apple Store just hanging out and listening to consumers talking. They cared about color, size, weight, price, whether it's in stock. I listened while one customer asked about the difference between an Intel MacBook and M1. After learning the benefits of Apple silicon the customer shrugged and bought the Intel MacBook because the M1 wasn't in stock until tomorrow and they didn't want to waste time driving back to the store. Not only do customers not care about Geekbench they couldn't even care less about the CPU at all. They don't ask about wifi specs, USB speeds, SSD performance, and certainly not screen refresh rates. It's one thing mention specs but entirely different when you frame it as a scandal to try to get clicks. In addition to the noise about 60hz we also had "USB gate" where the iPhone 15 USB speed was intentionally crippled even though A16 doesn't support USB 3.0.

It's because who use apple are the same people who took that shot. There all cattle and going to get slowly punished. It's just Linux repackaged. People think Apple is smart but there not. If Steve Job was alive Holy I miss the wars. Everything is flat today no new wars to fight over its like every tech company push out the same thing slightly different. What's funny why do people care about color? Then put a case over it... 😂 Braindead people I say.... if your a techie today it doesn't mean nothing but you like over price garbage that they push.

Thanks so much for talking about this. Coming from the 11 I've been pretty set on getting the 15 Plus as my new phone and have obviously been doing my research on all of the specs and watching reviews. The topic of the 60Hz vs 120Hz came up in a video and they were basically saying an iPhone in this day and age without 120Hz is "criminal" and that had me questioning the choice to get the 15 if I wanna keep it for as long as possible. Then after watching more videos and actually thinking about it, I have NEVER given even a passing thought to the refresh rate of my phone's screen, and don't think it would even cross my mind in the future. It's then that I realised it's a pretty baseless criticism for regular people like me, and that I'll get the 15 Plus anyway

@yaboimax It really is criminal, basic tech withheld for marketing protocols, they could make as variable refresh rate to minimise extra battery drain, but one could lower the display brightness to do the same, having the option is the nice point. Perfect Jon, you hit the nail on the head. This was a great piece.
And you know what? I do care about 120 Hz, I even care about 144, 165 and 240 Hz. On my Gaming Monitor, where I can feel the difference.
But on my phone? No. Because even I, as an IT engineer, don't use my phone like a pro. I do normal people stuff. Cell and WiFi reception, battery, cameras, storage, software updates, build quality, colour accuracy, screen brightness, even the USB-C transfer speed... almost everything else comes before refresh rate for me. A high refresh rate is the last thing I do care about.
And I, like almost everyone else, am used to looking at 60 Hz monitors. My Laptop monitor? 60 Hz. My non-gaming desktop monitors? 60 Hz. My TV? 60 Hz. If you are using a 120 Hz phone or more right now and think you can't life without: Force the refresh rate down to 60 Hz (if possible) and let it sit there for a week. I'll bet you won't be able to tell the difference anymore after one week, unless you turn it up again or have a direct comparison.

Who cares about the refresh rates, the megapixels?! Most people just want something that works and works well for them. Most newer high end phones are similar when it comes to how things work. So they stay with whatever that has worked for them, unless there is a super compelling reason to switch, for example, folding screen. I do know that some people switched because of the flip.

Essentially, us techies are prudes about certain things lol. But not always a bad thing. I think it does push companies to really make a good product. Even for the iPhone 14, from the repair shop I work at, the Apple screen is about $250 and third party screens are about $180 for OLED and $140 for LED. Meanwhile, the baseline S23 screen (Which breaks much easier due to the rounded edges) is $350-$400 depending on the color of the phone since Samsung can never restock their parts.

As a hybrid tech nerd/regular person, I agree. I’ve only had iPhones the last decade. Currently holding onto my iPhone 12 mini for dear life. I know about the specs and watch the reviews. I’ve never had a 120hz screen. Not a problem. Even the usb c thing was stupid. I travel with my iPhone, AirPods, apple watch and chrome cast. Usb c was not something I was dying to have. For why?? I’m glad you get it ❤️

I agree 100. I went from a 13pro max to base model 15. Phone is lighter, more comfortable for me. Majority of times i do not tell difference between 120 hz and 60 hz. IPhone 15 is solid and good enough for me

I don't know what to feel about this video. Sure, people don't care or are ignorant of refresh rates of displays. Apple is taking advantage of exactly this. If this isn't exploiting the unaware, idk what is. Tech influencers like you & many others should actually be making people aware of this exploitation. It isn't about being a tech nerd or something. Apple users seem to completely turn a blind eye for whatever it does and defend it as if their lives depended on it. The intention of this comment is not to throw shade at Apple or it's users, but to attempt to open their eyes to what injustice is happening. iOS is awesome, but don't turn a blind eye to the wrongdoings.
But never mind, after watching this video, I'm pretty sure this comment will get lost in the crowd.

100% on point. I’m a regular consumer who really loves tech. Still rocking an iPhone 12 mini. I’ve been in store and used the 120hz displays. On the phones and the laptops. The vast majority of regular users would never notice the difference.

The point is not that the "aVeRaGe CoNzUmer" doesn't care or doesn't notice, the point is that for the price this phone is, it should just have this feature by default and the people who pay for it deserve it regardless of if they use it or not. It's not a Pro feature or an advanced user feature, if it can exist on a $200 Android then it can exist on an $800 iPhone.

I had Android from gingerbread to oreo and bought a new phone every year ending with the og Pixel XL. The software crapped out 13 months in. Google wouldn't replace it so I went looking for a new phone. Nothing stood out but the iPhone X. 7 yrs later I still have it. Don't regret the switch. Ironically this is the first tech video I've watched in yrs. No need to worry about the next best thing when I'm good with what I have. Thank you Jon

Wether someone will notice the feature or not it should be in the phone due to how expensive it is and the fact that mid range android phones can ship with a 90-120hz panel. Apple clearly loves 120hz or they wouldn't have named it "Pro Motion"

@@mjsabie8517 I'm not fanboying here I own a Samsung phone and an iPad. + MacBook. Have had many iPhones in the past but I'm just being honest I do feel that for the price of the iPhone limiting stuff like frame rates in 2023 is a bit mad when they are so far ahead they don't need to do that. The new pro iPhone looks decent but I'm more looking forward to what Apple can do with a foldable.

100% Agree Jon. I am the only person among my family, friends and co-workers that has a Pro iPhone, and 95% of them own iPhones. I have to explain what a 120hz refresh rate is to them and why it’s important. THEY DO NOT CARE. It is literally the last thing on their mind when they’re buying a phone. For people like myself and many other tech enthusiasts, it’s important and we love having it and that’s why we have the Pro models, we have an option for it. Now do I think it seems ridiculous to have a $800 and $900 starting price for phones that don’t have a high refresh rate? Kind of. Does it negate all of the great things the base model has this year? Absolutely not. Average consumers focus on, the look and feel of the device, the user interface, the screen, the cameras, and the battery life. In fact one thing average consumers seem pissed about is the removal of the lightning port and replacing it with USB C, and that’s something we as a tech community have been begging to happen, so that alone shows you the disconnect. My sister-in-law went on a rant about them removing lightning for USB C and I had to explain why they did it and why it needed to happen. For them it’s an annoyance, especially for those who will have a mixture of lightning and USB C devices now, but it will work itself out in the end.

I'm not an Android fanboy, I own both Android and Apple phones/products, but I find it amusing how 120hz was seen as a gimmick and unnecessary by Apple fanboys when Android first had it, but when Apple finally implemented it on their phones, now it's such a big deal for Apple users to make a fuss about it for situations like this. Funny how quickly people flip-flop and change their tune like that.

For the record, I've only owned Samsung smartphones, my first one being the fascinate which came out in 2010. Switched from the S10+ to the 23 Ultra this year, and the experience with the Ultra so far has been great overall. But in this world I think if you subscribe to a certain viewpoint or ideology, the best way to test it is to challenge your views and see how the other side lives. You either galvanize your point of view, or you change it. That being said, I would like to think that I'm not so much of a Samsung fanboy that if someone was willing to let me use the new 15 pro max for 30 days i would take them up on that offer. My sister switched to IOS from android several years ago and she has never looked back. I would be interested in seeing how the two are similar and how they are different. But I certainly don't have enough cash lying around to buy 2 premium flagship phones in the same year.
