    That was really fascinating to watch, Richard - thank you for this.
    I've only ever seen emergency braking videos shot from outside the car - never from the inside, with the driver in view.

    Think this is camera based Vs radar. My guess is that the radar systems (VW) only react to items with greater density than cardboard whereas the camera systems recognise an object regardless so long as it is visible.

    In the Tesla’s there are 4 settings for the collision warning timing, some of the variations in those warnings may have been down to that. The automatic braking is just on or off though.

    Great video! Good find with the automatic emergency braking logic in the Tesla's, it makes a lot of sense to avoid accidental emergency braking when you're already aware of an obstacle.

    • @justinholding02
      @justinholding02 3 года назад +1

      @@RSEV it's something to do with density, it's also capable of recognizing different sorts of vehicles including motorcycles as well as pedestrians. If you have the multifunction camera in the windshield it works in combination with the ACC radar in the front bumper. German logic, it's not everyday you get a cardboard person crossing the street 😂

    • @chrische02
      @chrische02 16 дней назад

      @@RSEV Radar only works on metal because the electromagnetic waves are not fully reflected by other materials (such as cardboard). The radar probably went right through the cardboard, so "Elon" was invisible to it. The camera-based Tesla systems obviously detected the cardboard. I would assume that the VW system is made to avoid crashes with cars, which are made of metal.

    There are 2 types of systems, collision avoidance which is the 'city safe' system which will stop your car from hitting an object but only up to about 25mph. The 2nd system is 'collision mitigation' which will work at much higher speeds and only reduces the impact speed by say 15 to 20mph. This does not sound like much of a speed reduction but may make the difference between life and death. There are no systems like city safe that will work from say 60 to 0mph, reason being is that the system will activate if it thinks that the driver cannot steer around the obsticle and the distance to steer around a stationary target in the road is shorter than the distance required to brake from 60 to 0mph

    My Audi A6 Avant C8 saved my life once on the highway. I got distracted by Google Maps suddenly saying I had a delay of 40 minutes on my route to pickup my kid from school and I got worried and looked at the screen for literally a few seconds. Problem was there was a right turn in the highway and a Ford Focus was driving at no more than 60kph/36mph in a 120kph/75mph zone and I didn't see him on the straight before the turn. I was driving at 120kph and my A6 just slammed the brakes hard enough to drop the speed and gave me enough time to assess the situation, swerve and save myself. 🙏 The Ford Focus driver didn't even notice a thing (looking down at his phone)...
    So the Audi presense works at way bigger speeds than 20-25mph. And I take an even bigger care while diverting my eyes from the road even for a second.
    It has already activated a few times when it wasn't necessary, which always scares me, but God bless automatic braking.

    The E-Golf (and I assume GTE) will only brake if the object is moving into the path of the vehicle, or the object is decelerating and the Golf believes it will impact into the vehicle. (My emergency braking usually kicks in when a car pulls off the primary road into a turning slip as it assumes I am following the path of the vehicle ahead, even though I know I am going past it) It caught me off guard a few times and the person behind I am sure must wonder why I brake suddenly for a car ahead turning that isn't even in my lane anymore. (It is more sensitive if the adaptive cruise control is on and it is not me on the accelerator, If I am controlling speed manually it usually beeps but not brakes for me)

    Some of these tests don’t work well due to programming. With static obstructions the car has detected from the starting position, or as far as it can detect it assumes it is a sign post or bollard as part of the road (doesn’t know if road bends ahead) so it tends to ignore these. If that same static object then started moving it will assume it’s a pedestrian or vehicle, and stop the car.

    For tesla you can make it to stop early or medium or late so you can let tesla stop early

    The seatbelt in the 2014 S looks shredded, maybe some previous owner always wore a jacket with metal zip when driving it?

    Maybe the issue with the cars not braking is that they use radar that might not see the cardboard? I know the new Tesla's only use cameras.

    Great video that was just brought to my attention. I've always questioned the ability of cardboard figures to simulate real obstacles. Can it be that some of the cars use radar for emergency braking and that the cardboard doesn't reflect enough of it to trigger an emergency brake?

    Something odd about your I-Pace as EMERGENCY BRAKING is a standard feature of the car. I drive one myself and it came on when someone ran out in front of me a few months ago.

    Cool. Tesla vehicles work pretty well with safety braking on pedestrians.
    How does it do with smaller animals such as dogs or will it even detect smaller Squirrels that scurry in front of vehicles at times driving through neighborhoods.
    It is now 2023 and how well do the Tesla vehicles work without radar sensors and emergency braking????
    Looks like we better be wearing our seatbelts all the time with these kind of emergency stoppings.

    As a few people have alluded to previously it would appear that the iPace and definitely the Golf rely on radar technology over vision based detection. Radar systems emit pulses of microwave energy that travel at the speed of light and this energy will only be returned if it encounters a material which will reflect it. Fortunately water is extremely reflective and the Mk 1 human being would have no trouble be detected by these radar based devices. Cardboards and plastics are transparent to microwave energy which is why you can heat your curry in these form of containers in your microwave oven at home.
    Previous comment made of giving Elon a bacofoil backside would also provide a nice radar reflection unless you wanted to sacrifice the office water cooler !

    Hi a question for you, does the acceleration boost for the M3 reduce the range of the car. Obviously if the car is driven hard that will but in normal circumstances is there any difference please.
    Thank you

      No, just a bit more performance up to about 50mph.
      Range is down to pure physics

    Tesla should make it so that even if you're already breaking it anyways puts 100% breaking force.. just for more safety

    What software was on the Teslas? I've noticed far more "forward collision warning" activations in 2021.418.2 vs previous versions. More use of the cameras maybe?

    Very interesting video. If these systems are built into cars you expect them to work. From seeing this you should not rely or trust these AEB systems.
    I wonder what the legal ramifications are if manufacturers are selling these systems and the cars still run into people.

    Does Tesla Model 3 have Automatic Emergency Breaking?? Anyone. My Tesla Model 3 Automatic Emergency breaking did stop breaks tires screeching loudly when someone pulled out in from of me on local street. But I can't tell if it was the car or me that reacted. Mar 8, 2023
