  • This video shows how to convert an old style round top NV4500 top cover to a newer style square top cover using just a few new parts. The round tops can wear themselves out over the years, and instead of simply rebuilding your round top, rebuild it to the newer style square top on a budget! This allows you to use newer style shifters, upgraded aftermarket shifters, or simply have a more desirable top cover in case you decide to sell the transmission at a later date. These are direct replacements for old style units and work awesome, adding years to your transmission's life.

    Man i have to say thanks for the super helpful video. I will be watching it again in my garage for sure when i do my nv4500. Just picked up a donor v10 4x4 auto truck to do a frame swap on my 2wd nv4500 12v cummins. My plan is to do a full rebuild and convert the nv4500 to 4x4 output shaft with the cast iron housing upgrade. Its a round top now and the shifter is well.. rather sloppy lol. I hope to see your channel blow up with views cause the info your providing is incredibly valuable to the average automotive hobbyist like myself. Subbed and looking forward to future videos.

    I have a square top cover that i need to replace a broken 3-4 shift fork. Is it possible to pop the roll pins on the square top without drilling holes through the cover?

    Thanks for the video!! This is super helpful as I want to just service my square top. How do you judge if the forks need replaced ? I can see my 1-2 3-4 show some wear from the collar but I don’t know if it’s
    Needed to replace
    Thanks

      If the contact area of the forks are damaged or worn bad enough that you can feel it with a fingertip, its best to swap them out. Theyre cheap. Good luck.

    The dodge NV4500 tail housing, what to look for in the aluminum ones vs the steel ones???
    I need one and I found an aluminum one really cheap. Pros and cons??

      I have a whole pile of the because we dont use them. We only install cast iron housings, it help with rigidity and supports the case much better, plus theyre only about $150 bucks.

      @@longrangegear have you seen them faill a lot?

      @@JTNiebrugg only a couple times we’ve seen them crack, and pour all the fluid out- we upgrade to the cast iron not only because theyre less likely to do that, but we believe they support the case better in that area thats rather thin.

    I have a NV 4500 in my 93 K1500 Chevy, I've had it for 10 years, my 4th gear pops out only when letting off the accelerator, it's been doing it since I first got it, it's not gotten any worse in all those years, but it's annoying, is it the 3,4, shift rail that I need to change?

      If its popping out of gear, the top cover will rarely be the fix for that. Generally, it the gear and slider combination that have worn the backcuts down until they can no longer hold themselves into gear. Basically, i needs to come apart to fix it.

      It only does it when I'm in 4th, and I can leave my hand on the shift knob and keep it from jumping out, I guess I'll leave it.

    Is the 1-2 shift lug absolutely necessary? I haven’t been able to find it anywhere, even with the part number.

    • @longrangegear
      @longrangegear  Год назад +1

      Its not but the early shift lugs are spring loaded and the later ones are not. If you reused 1-2, you have a top thats spring loaded to one side and not the other. You could try reusing all the shift lugs/forks. I havent tried it yet since it isnt “correct” and i dont have any five speed trucks of my own to experiment with, but I’ve been curious if it would work. I think it will. If you try it, please let me know!
