  • Today we teardown a core thats been hiding under the bench for awhile. This transmission is an early style from a 99-early 2000 Dodge Ram with a cummins. It was ran low on oil from the previous owner. It has the small 1-1/4" input shaft and old style synchros, so alot of this transmission had to be replaced anyways. She now happily installed in Wyatt's truck with a nice dual disc clutch, new input, case, all new gears, and synchronizers. We can rebuild these no matter how bad they get!

I had a local shop to me "rebuild" mine for $3k just to find out after removal (they installed it too in this configuration) that they only tightened 3 bellhousing bolts and 4 tail housing bolts, it leaked out while towing my horses on a long road trip and locked up at 65mph with about 7k lbs worth of trailer jack knifing around me.
For multiple thousands of dollars later and a new 50 ton press im rebuilding my own transmissions from now on, I wouldn't trust them ever again to warranty it and "fix it"

Lots of shops do more harm than good on these transmissions, im sorry that happened.

Wow, that's looking a LOT like mine.. though mine didn't get run hot for quite as long, the rollers were still round but the cage was pooched, and the bearings in the gears to the front of it were piled up... I haven't torn it completely down... I was talking to you on FB about ordering several kits.. someday!

Yeah that big 1st gear bearing is the first to fail in a low oil situation, thats why its so important to add some porting and clearancing to the case during rebuild to help feed it with oil.

@@longrangegear Guess that's why they recommend overfilling, usually by 1qt I think? I did my diff this summer, all new bearings, put the best oil I could get into it since it stays in there a long time and it works hard (I think it was 80w140 full synthetic lucas)

Yep. Overfilling these transmissions is very important. The factory fill level is just too low during prolonged driving times. We add some clearancing, porting and channeling for oil during our rebuilds to maximize the reliability long-term 👍

Can you safely run 8 quarts of oil in the NV5600? I’ve been hearing about guys doing this with good results.
