Worst G56 Ever ! This Thing is Destroyed!!

This is definately the worst G56 to come through the shop. Whats not pictured is the fact that we later learned the rear countershaft bearing race was loose and the case was worn out, meaning the only salvageable parts from this case was 1st gear, 2nd gear, reverse gear, shift rails and a few plates. Crazy!!

I do transmission work out of my garage on the side, and have had a few folks contact me about NV5600s. The only thing intimidating me is pressing off 5th and 6th gear. Don’t think my little 12 ton job would handle that. 😂
Bravo ... I've been a mechanic for over 50 years. You sir are doing a Very good job of instructing/explaining. I've built everything from 8000 hp centrifugal compressors to bb guns and slingshots. I really appreciate the detail you have gone into explaining np4500. Good job .... from an old mech that has made spec. tools from blue prints in service literature. ..... Unkl John
I’ve been fighting my main shaft trying to get it installed for hours. I’ve tried wiggling, prying, installing it at all different angles. POS will not go in (second gear is hanging up on the counter shaft)… Anybody have some advise for me before I grind 20 though off of this gear?
😅well i tried to be careful with my aftermarket 5th fork. But it just didnt feel like it was locked into the rail. Turns out the aftermarket forks pin holes are not machined with the correct offset. They are set too far inboard. And are an interference fit when the pin comes to the bore on the other side of the shaft. Time to overnight parts and try again😢
Why are you swapping the nv5600 to a g56?
It went from a 5600, to a g56, now it’s back to a 5600 😂
I have a nv4500 in a 93 Chevy 4x4 powered by a 4.3 v6 . 188,000 miles. Seems to be working fine.
What kit is this and where did you order it from? Also is the dodge version or chevy

With the best parts that can be put in a NV4500 how much torque can one handle?
Is there any option to change the sixth gear for a better overdrive?
What would cause the tranny to partially disengage when holding back? When I gear down, the tranny pops and grinds.
This is very helpful. I had either a countershaft failure or an input shaft failure. The trans was new just a few thousand miles earlier, and I had a 1 3/8 input installed from my previous transmission. The input is missing two teeth next to each other, and the countershaft is missing several scattered around. Any suggestions as to what would cause that? I’m probably running 450+hp. I’m wondering if lash was too tight or something like that. This was the first time I farmed out any clutch or transmission work on the truck, so I don’t know what it was like when it went in.

I'm almost 10 minutes in and I have to say I love watching you transmission techs go at it, I work on a lot euro cars but we leave trans out projects to the local transmission shops. Also love seeing these pieces of machinery used to their absolute limit, and thank you for documenting it. Ended up here down a rabbit hole for lubricant reviews after using some royal purple in my range rover but I know I need to reseal the PTO covers on the NV4500 in my dodge and do a driveline fluid service soon(only 350k lol). I don't even have this trans in my truck but I do see your video on an Oreilly's NV4500 teardown on the sidebar and that's up next, can't wait. Keep at it, love it 👍 thanks

I was just wondering if you could answer a question, i bought a truck that has a nv4500 that has been rebuilt under 5000 miles ago and the guy said he had the tansmission rebuilt and ever since he got it back it would kick back out of 1st gear anytime you start letting the clutch out. Fyi the tranmisssion shifts smooth and there is no grinding or noises while driving or shifting

I have a late 2nd gen Cummins with the NV4500. I plan on either having my transmission professionally rebuilt or buying a good reman unit. The Valair clutch sounds like what I’m looking for: smooth, quiet, and durable.

looks like the sort of damage from drag racing.
Weak design. That’s what you get when you try to support all those rotating parts with just 4 bearings. The Getrag units were total garbage in the 1/2 ton trucks of the 90s. Same design. Too much torque and the assembly defects and breaks, or takes out a bearing. I had to replace the 6th gear in one of those G56 units. It wasn’t cheap for the parts let alone hard to find. 👍
How much to rebuild that ?

@@ivonivan1169 these are a far cry from the actual Mercedes g56-6. The Chrysler application requires a very thin fluid to displace from the synchronizer for a good shift.
A transmission that's been out of production only 6 years is already have parts supply issues?? What a sad sight
Chrysler had a ridiculous price system on their parts, pretty much drove everybody to do exchanges with oem. The aftermarket has been very slow to respond but it’s coming around.

What would cause my chevy 4x4 5 speed transmission to work in 1st 3rd and 5th but when put in 2nd 4th or reverse and let off the clutch it's like it's in neutral but I have kept putting it in and out of reverse and reverse finally caught and when it did it held great never popped out and I try to make it pop out but it held good but 1 out of 100 times it may grab but mostly just like It's in neutral same with 2nd and fourth but never have got 2nd or 4th to grab since I owned it and it's been this way since I bought it what can cause it to not work in the bottom gears 2nd 4th armor reverse
It's nice to see somebody that's actually willing to build these old 5 speeds, so many shops have stopped building them.

My NV5600 Has a hard time getting into 3rd and 5th without double clutching and rev matching. It has a new valair clutch and clutch master and slave set. I assume this is the synchros going out?
Red loctite, 500 ft lbs of torque and then fully weld the nut on and then sell the truck

Would love to hear what you did about your front seat. I have an 2001 with stock front seat its all manual and it is a nightmare to drive long distance. Causes all kind of pinched nerve issues in my leg, back, arm, shoulder, sciatica on right side. I need to go with a newer more adjustable seat and would love to know any research you have on what will work on these 2nd gen Ram 2500s.

i broke the pivot bal bolt off i thought it was spinning but it was either pre twisted or i just twisted it . i just drilled it and re ran threads

I've had three SBC's over the years (Con/ofe). That's not because they wore out, that's because they failed one way or another. The last one came apart internally and jammed itself engaged earlier this year. SBC wouldn't even give me 10% off towards another clutch. I have no knowledge of Valair but that's who I'll get next time.
That sounds like a rough situation: “the last ten of these synchronizers have had fitment issues..”. Sucks to be those ten customers, but I realize that we as technicians learn things the hard way sometimes.
They were almost all caught on assembly, they were really bad. I took them to my local transtar and exchanged them out.
Does it come with ballbearing pilot bearing in flywheel?
