Should you buy a diesel transmission from a parts store? Watch us teardown a Dodge Cummins NV4500 sourced from Oreilly auto parts. This transmission came to us from a large diesel performance company, still sealed in the crate with zero miles. The owner had to warranty the transmission and wanted to bring it to us for a clean slate. We got to tear into it and see how they show to your door and ...

1.1 MILLION MILE NV5600 TEARDOWN!
Просмотров 2,5 тыс.6 месяцев назад
We had the awesome opportunity to tear into a 2001 Dodge NV5600 from a semi-local car hauler, that had an astonishing 1,160,000 miles on the clock. He was on the road unloaded and experienced a failure of 6th and then 5th gear, and brought it over to us for a rebuild. He stated the transmission was rebuilt previously at 700k miles. Very cool experience!
Nv5600 Synchronizer bad out of the box!
Просмотров 2946 месяцев назад
This synchronizer was deformed right out of the box, causing a quasi-lockup of 6th gear on the shaft. When testing, all gears were difficult and reverse was nearly locked up. This is because the transmission was basically in two gears at once, as the synchro was holding 6th gear to the shaft. Just another thing to check for to avoid on your builds 👍

Wondering if you would have a solution to my problem (and if its the clutch then ill be buying valair which i likely will already because my south bend shifts like garbage). I have a 12v cummins with a nv4500 i rebuilt with all high quality parts, with the south bend organic/ceramic dual disk and upgraded input. I have a np241dhd and dana 80 disc rear end that was recently rebuilt. Last year i got a 5" aluminum driveshaft made because my slip joint failed on my stock steel shaft. The aluminum shaft amplifies a god awful rattling sound that i compare to a concrete saw. Its significantly louder than my exhaust under load, especially in 4th. Would swapping to a valair eliminate this sound? Its unbelievably frustrating to spend $3k (canadian) on a clutch and $1500 for a drive shaft for it to make my truck sound broken all the time. Yes, we get absolutely screwed on cost, its Canada.
Good video
I have done a lot of work "especially engine" on my 05 dually. Have a 5th wheel and travel the western mts. This has been in my plans lately But so far have just triple wrapped exh. from engine past the trans. Good maintenance and quality lube is important but heavy loads long hills and high temps are reason for added insurance.
Wish i was close to you my nv5600 2wd needs work
Great job man 👍 Are you in Washington? Greetings from Vancouver WA
aye the beanie cover lets go!!
So curious, how do you get the heavy damn thing up on your work bench? Going to assume it takes two.
Just replace it with a nv5600 problem solved for sure
Damn I wish I knew not to use Luk clutches before I put one in 30k kms ago hahah.
I had my 5600 rebuilt a couple years ago and every since it’s been rebuilt my shifter seems to float across the rack and you cannot feel the “detents” of the gear making it very difficult to find each gear. For example my shifter goes to the left past 1st and 2nd I have to come back to the right a bit to find the gears. Same goes for reverse. Any suggestions? I had the trans back at a different shop for an input shaft and they didn’t have an answer for me. Thank you !
Great breakdown. Can you do a video on dos and don’ts when driving or beating on a g56?
Thank you !!! your video was very informative and you spoke clearly and no long waits you got right to the problem
How does having a heavy duty case help be a oem?
How? I have an g56 and I’m not nice and it’s fine at 105k
I have a NV5600 on my 2005 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 5.9 diesel . It has a South bend Duel Friction and the throw-out bearings makes a dry grinding sound . This is my second Throw-out and from the start the second one makes the same dry grinding sound. The mechanic said he thinks it is . So now after seeing this video maybe its time for a change . I load a 3,500 lb camper and pull a trailer that when loaded is about 3500 lb . Which Valair would you recommend for me application ? So tired of the grinding sound every time i put the clutch in . People look at me and its embarrassing What would the price be for the Valair ? Thanks
Everything looks so dry? Was it ran out of oil?
This is the junk the public gets now, likely for a gang of $$.
Thanks for the video.. what is wrong if it won’t shift to any gear or won’t even come out of gear ? Please help
So have you actually seen a cracked or damaged aluminum rear tail housing from use? Id take aviation form a gasket with a paper gasket or type 2 form a gasket any day over RYV.
Yes I have, there’s several transmissions that have come in the shop ran low on oil from cracked housings. We only build them with cast iron housings. For sealant, Permatex MaxFlex is our choice for nv4500s and it works great.
I just replaced the tail housing on my nv4500 because it was cracked and leaking I used a cast iron one
@@1g_dsm_life154 my concern is the consistency of a iron casting in india or china.
@@GregariousAntithesisI bought a super cheap one it was $100 dollars honestly the casting seems pretty nice and the sealing surfaces and machining all seems to be pretty nice It seems just as high quality as the original just heavier duty. I haven't noticed any leaking after my rebuild or anything.
Is the quiet version offered for the (2002) 7.3 and ZF6 combo?
Awesome! I'm in the process of "refreshing and upgrading" my 12v 2nd gen. Mine is a 2wd nv4500 truck and i bought a matching 4x4 donor. Already have the donor truck stripped to bare frame. Cleaned, sanded and painted. Parts collecting for the summer (Hurricanes and humidity stopping progress lol) then rebuild onto the 4x4 next winter. Looking forward to any cummins related content.
Nice 2nd gen! Can't wait to see what you do with it.I have the freedom offroad control arms and trac bar for the last 100,000 miles and love them. Quality parts for a great price.
This is my truck, Andrew got me all fixed up and back on the road. The man knows his stuff and treats the customer right. Hopefully this will be educational for others; replace the retainer when you do a clutch replacement on a G56!
I have a 03 dodge 2500 5.9 with a nv5600 6 speed the truck has 230k miles on it im the second owner, anytime the clutch is engaged even in nuetral i get a really loud like gear clashing noise its not noticeable when im driving or sitting in a parking lot but if you get out and stand next to it you can hear it and also when im in a drive threw its really loud with a wall being up close for the sound to bounce off of. Would you have any idea what would be causing this noise? Ive seen around on the internet from trying to diagnose it myself that it is very common to have a bit of a rattle in ur transmission but id like to make sure.
2:13 aren't those white plastic retainers on the clutch cylinder pin supposed to break (or you cut thm) after it's installed?
Yes, that’s why we highlighted it. The plastic retainers are supposed to break on first depression of the pedal- the throwout was stopping the movement of the clutch fork entirely.
@@longrangegear Ah, I see. So it wouldn't even extend because the TO baring was sexed. Makes sense.
I'm working on a G56 and wondering if ther is a go no go spec on the synchros
Great video, i swapped my 98 12v from a 47re to nv4500 and it has 400k miles on it and hasnt given me any issue at 450hp. This winter i plan on common rail swapping my truck is there any upgrayou can recommend specifically to handle the power of the common rail engines when i start turning it up
Unfortunately, I can almost guarantee you start having issues if start modifying your common rail in front of an NV4500. These transmissions were never designed for the power that is now commonplace in the later 5.9’s. The factory torque rating is 460 ft-lbs… You can either be very careful with it (but what fun is that?!?) or start budgeting for an NV5600/G56/ZF6 swap.
@@longrangegear I see, i planned on tuning it and running a factory 6.7 turbo with a controller for the vgt/exhaust brake. I may definitely need to look at the 5600
Way impressive you 2 know each other’s moves
Zach and I are two pieces of a well-oiled machine 🤘🏼
Have you ever paired an NV4500 with a NP205 that have different input and output splines resulting in the use of a coupler which is said to interfere with the output seal on the trans? If so I'd love to know as I am in the process of swapping a 2wd NV4500 to 4wd and mating it with an NP205. Also, what is your opinion on MT90 apposed to MT85? I am told the viscosity is the only difference. Amazing video series on this by the way, seen many and this one is by far the most cut and dry and to the point!!!
Usually when pairing with a 6 bolt NP205 you’ll use a coupler and omit the rear transmission seal, and instead use a GM style gasket or RTV between the transmission and Tcase.
@@longrangegear Could leaving the seal uninstalled cause the trans and t-case to swap fluids?? If so I'm curious if the trans and t-case can run the same fluid. In this application gears are gears, the fluid is only particular to the carbon fiber synchro's in the trans?
@@robroy5729 they would only begin to mix fluid if your tcase input seal failed. Your tcase requires a heavy gear oil, the trans requires a very light synchromesh-type oil. They should not be interchanged.
What would the total bill be on a job like that ? Love your work ! I liked, save and subscribed 🖖🏻
Thank you! And our NV4500 rebuild cost starts at $2650 and can increase based on damage if any exists. Check out our website at www.lrgdiesel.com
Can't wait to start the rebuild and conversion from 2wd to 4x4 on my NV4500. Thanks for all the informative videos. Ill be re-watching them in the garage during every step. You aren't kidding about the green sleeve compound. That stuff is incredible. Used it on my 12v suburban swap for the hydro brakes to hold the gear on the power steering pump. Waited a tad to long to get it pressed fully on and man was it a bear to do afterwards.
So interesting to see, all I've done is an np435. I'd love to see a zf5 and zf6, do you do many of those?
Zf5’s rarely, but Zf6’s come in from time to time.
That was a great video… now I have to buy more tools ha. Are you getting the NV4500 rebuild kits from Torque King or do I get it from you?
Ok dammit…… A month ago when I got my 12 valve I was afraid of this little project but after watching you guys multiple times I amd confident enough to do it myself.
Can I run a 6 speed clutch on an nv4500 with the larger input shaft upgrade?
What size bearing puller are you using to putt that 3,4 hub assembly
I’ve ran Amsoil’s MTF for 180K . No issues so far but I do agree that Redline makes a great MTF as well.
Thank you for the help, my input shaft just sheared of on mine and in the middle of tearing into it had some prices fall out, being the synchro hub springs and pieces.
Wish you had something for the NV4500LD
Would you convert a 12 valve to a propane burner. 10.5 comp. Ford six HIE. Imco 200 carb. Volkswagen distributor gear off of acc drive. To get the timing right. ???? Now It WOULD WORK. 😊
Where are you located?
If u can shift with out the clutch, with out any grinding are u still damaging synchros like ppl say?
At 1:03 you said the slider only goes on one way and that you had a video on how to assemble. do you mean there is only one orientation (taper up or down) Or only one rotational position?
Atf was used in 3 & 4 speeds back in the day. More modern stuff I'm not sure iof.
how mutch $ to get my rebuilt nv5600 ?
Man, you look like you have done this a thousand times. Great Job!. If my trans ever needs work, I will be giving you and Becky a call for sure.
Looking at buying a nv4500 and picking up. With the top off of it and it out of a vehicle what tips would you have for inspection to see if it's a good unit. Apparently only 112,000km on the unit but always take that with a grain of salt.
All comments about the south bend are very true .
Why am I watching you rebuild a transmission that I don’t even have? Because it’s relaxing ha. Your shop is top notch and your helper is awesome. Dude makes me look lazy when I work on projects haha
My 2nd gear is bad in my rebuild, where do u buy a good replacement gear?
