  • We got a great customer's NV4500 from a 4x4 Dodge Ram Cummins and the complaint was that its making "some really horrible noises". We decided to open her up and it was pretty bad, but easily fixable by Long Range Gear.

Input shafts good, transfer case seems good, I can put them into gear spin the rear shaft and the front shaft will spin. I put it into 2wd it seems as if it still wants to move the front drive shaft but doesn’t. Truck just won’t move. Seems like everything works. Resistance doesn’t change weather clutch is in or out either.

Hello, I have a 2004, GMC 2500 HD four-wheel-drive truck with an NV4500 transmission. Last week this last week it has NV 4500 trans. I’ve checked everything and I’m stumped when you’re going through the gears pulling it does great no noise when you let off the gas on deceleration it will pop I’ve checked the front CV joints I’m just not sure if it’s the transmission after I have taken off the inspection plates on the trans. All the gears look good that I can see nothing metallic in the oil no chunks in bottom. I am just stumped on what it could be. Do you have any suggestions?

If u can shift with out the clutch, with out any grinding are u still damaging synchros like ppl say?

How come you say that the brass synchronizers are trash? I’m new to the nv4500 and all I have heard is that brass is an actual upgrade. If you say carbon fiber is the only way to go, then tell us what fluid to use. When I went to change my gear lube in my 4500, I had a hell of a time trying to find out what the correct fluid was. I heard the original manufacturer quit making The stuff and you had to cross reference to a different one. So please tell us right now what to use in a stock nv4500. Please and thank you.

Redline MT-85 is the only fluid I recommend for NV4500s. Im not a brass synchro fan in any application aside from G56’s, carbon fiber just works better with a good fluid.

I run ams oil you can also go to a dealership to get “stock” oil but it’s the same just more expensive. The Ams oil has a red label stating it’s for manual transmissions and transaxle. On the back of the bottle it says nv 4500.
It has to have a special sulpherless additive in it other wise sulpher reacts with soft yellow metal synchros to create sulphuric acid which destroys them.
