Bravo ... I've been a mechanic for over 50 years. You sir are doing a Very good job of instructing/explaining. I've built everything from 8000 hp centrifugal compressors to bb guns and slingshots. I really appreciate the detail you have gone into explaining np4500. Good job .... from an old mech that has made spec. tools from blue prints in service literature. ..... Unkl John
Planning on diesel swapping an '88 Ranger with a 4BT and an NV4500, by no means am I a professional, but I can't wait for the rest of this NV4500 build to help me out!!
Great info and thanks for all the part numbers. I just started the tear down of a v10 automatic 4x4 donor for my 12v cummins 2wd NV4500 to 4x4 conversion. I'll def be referring back to this series during that process. My truck is stock and i don't have plans of hot rodding it but i do want to keep it as reliable as possible and these upgrades will help with that. Looking forward to the rest of this build.
Eagerly waiting for part 2. Had my nv4500 for my 95 12 valve rebuilt by a "professional". It shifts worse now than it did beforehand and has turned into a loud, obnoxious excuse for a transmission.
Keep it going! You helped me trouble shoot my NV4500 a few weeks back after I did my rebuild. Was having issues with 5th gear not disengaging, reached out to you via email and you pointed me in the right direction. Needed a new slider.
@@cadenellickson5437 take your top cover off, and just reset your trans into nuetral from the top cover hole (big scredriver or 8in quarter in extension will persuade it), then put the tip cover on. Used to happen to me all the time when i was flooring it in 4th and threw it into 5th, has to do with wear in the top cover. Just take it easy when shifting 4th to 5th and it shouldnt happen.
I was just wondering if you could answer a question, i bought a truck that has a nv4500 that has been rebuilt under 5000 miles ago and the guy said he had the tansmission rebuilt and ever since he got it back it would kick back out of 1st gear anytime you start letting the clutch out. Fyi the tranmisssion shifts smooth and there is no grinding or noises while driving or shifting
Hey Andrew ! Love the video and all the info ! Was wondering i know this is for a dodge application, I’m planning on building a GM NV 4500 any one you would recommend to get a good quality complete rebuild kit ?
Ok mang, when is the next video coming out? I’m assembling one right now, but no way I’m just gonna finish it with my torque king manual, if I know you are coming out with rebuild videos
Great video, i swapped my 98 12v from a 47re to nv4500 and it has 400k miles on it and hasnt given me any issue at 450hp. This winter i plan on common rail swapping my truck is there any upgrayou can recommend specifically to handle the power of the common rail engines when i start turning it up
Unfortunately, I can almost guarantee you start having issues if start modifying your common rail in front of an NV4500. These transmissions were never designed for the power that is now commonplace in the later 5.9’s. The factory torque rating is 460 ft-lbs… You can either be very careful with it (but what fun is that?!?) or start budgeting for an NV5600/G56/ZF6 swap.
@@longrangegear I see, i planned on tuning it and running a factory 6.7 turbo with a controller for the vgt/exhaust brake. I may definitely need to look at the 5600
Hello i was curious what brand/company you usually use to buy new gears from. Ive got my rear transmission housing opened up on my nv4500. Im looking to replace main and countershaft 5th gears and the main shaft at a minimum. Ive yet to fully yank the transmission as i was hoping it was the simple 5th gear nut issue. Unfortunately both 5th gears are completely toast so i gotta yank the whole thing and get to disassembly while i wait on those parts.
What would cause my chevy 4x4 5 speed transmission to work in 1st 3rd and 5th but when put in 2nd 4th or reverse and let off the clutch it's like it's in neutral but I have kept putting it in and out of reverse and reverse finally caught and when it did it held great never popped out and I try to make it pop out but it held good but 1 out of 100 times it may grab but mostly just like It's in neutral same with 2nd and fourth but never have got 2nd or 4th to grab since I owned it and it's been this way since I bought it what can cause it to not work in the bottom gears 2nd 4th armor reverse
I just need a main shaft. I snapped the output shaft. Rest the trans is in awesome shape. Just too many slams into an ice bank. Probably too many clutch dumps too. So if u could plz sell me a oe mainshaft 23 spline.
I dont have any OEM shafts, I throw them in the garbage. The 23 spline main shaft is the light duty shaft and should be replaced with an HD unit such as the one pictured here, 29 spline. You can simply change the input in your transfer case to accommodate.

Do you recommend the carbon fiber synchros? Or the aftermarket brass synchros? I know the composite synchros require the better gear oil.
I do not like brass synchros in NV4500s. The carbon lines synchros are excellent and last a very long time with Redline MT-85.
