Warming up properly for singing with distortion, screaming other more aggressive vocals can be one of the hardest things do! This is because it is SO easy to overdo it and not know you've gone to far until it's too late! Then... You get discouraged, have to quit for the day and start wondering if you've really messed something up.
This is why I warm up every day exactly as I show you in THIS video! This three-stage warmup allows you to ease in to your grit, distortion and other extreme sounds by the practice of RELEASING into them instead of giving into the temptation of pushing into them.
The distinction I just laid out is SO key! Try this warmup daily for a couple weeks and you'll be absolutely amazed at how EASY it is and how free it feels to use distortion techniques in your singing!
its like fry screams finally clicked. just screaming along with you, helps so much.
I still struggle with aggressive singing and distortion.
Im too broke for a teacher or course do all I habe is ur videos and listening to singers and experimenting.
So thx for these videos man
You're welcome! Have you tried my Free Your Voice Course?? It's free!
You give so much more information than another unnamed RUclips vocal coach. You are not pedantic but are real gregarious and open and honest. You’re exactly that same guy one on one. Humility in greatness coexist you are proof of it man.
@@chrisliepe Aye Chris! I'd love to see a video on Michael Graves from the misfits or possibly Davey Havok from AFI! Thanks man! You're awesome!
@@jmscoving Thanks man! I'm so glad you've continued to enjoy and progress with my help!
You’re really a good teacher. 👊
I appreciate that!
And I’m a lazy asshole 😂 … damn it
@@BULLET-PROOF-BAND lol. Same. Well, the lazy part anyway. Chris is amazing. By far the best out there.
@@chrisliepe I’ve been following you since….. I don’t know when I started… and I told myself a hundred times now I start to kick my ass and begin seriously with your lessons. But in the end for one reason or another I never do … and I need to!
@@JohnnyRawks agree with you. Chris is damn good
this is the most educational earrape ive ever heard
7:25 I saw the video with speakers and the window open while doing the warmup myself, spreading some Chris for the world to hear
I always felt awkward doing crazy noises backstage haha.
Something that always help me freely scream is closing my mouth and eyes as hard as possible and opening them back up as far as possible. Loose and stress free.
Saving this into my vocal playlist! Man, I discovered how to properly scream by myself, I was very angry one day and just started shouting and something clicked, my anger evaporated as I was like "wait a minute this sounds good". Funny isn't? Then I discovered your channel, and I instantly spotted you were talking about what I had just discovered. Been watching all your videos since, all of them are helpful and insightful, and... most of all... all of them MAKE FUCKING SENSE. Like... Jesus, I gave up learning about singing on RUclips long ago because I never really learned anything. Thanks, Chris, your work is making people discover themselves! (A side note, I'd love to watch a video about Sting's style of singing, it's quite unique and I still haven't figured it out). Cheers.
Yeah. Everyone else is like: "lean into the velvet pancakes tone by engaging your sphinctal phalanges, then gradually add some ferrarissimo to the fianchetto, but don't stray into mozarella territory or you can damage your clitoranal pocket and destroy your theraminissimo" Then you realise that they're not gonna tell you what any of that shit means, outside of the expensive-ass course they're trying to sell. Every video promises answers but turns out to be nothing but an advertisement for the expensive-ass course.
@@ashscott6068 I laughed my balls off, thanks and yea I agree
I'm sounding like a cat preparing to fight 😹😾
Same dude, my neighbors prob think I'm schitzo at this point, but who cares. Keep going!!
@@SnailyTheSnailI already am so like I think I’m clear
@@cheynalope oh xd
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
Excellent
Amazing!!!! Chris. You really are the master of aggressive singing and how to do it safely, and to enhance your voice. It's a breakthrough in itself.
He is awesome
Its amazing that your gestures and descriptions actually help visualize the "location" of the voice
You help me gain just a little bit more confidence every time I watch your videos Chris. Thank you!
This is the very thing I have been waiting for and the whole concept of uvula false chords and Cookie Monster zone has been awesome on aggressive vocal package.
Your methods, teachings, and ways of explaining things makes so much sense to me. I appreciate you. 🙏🏼
Thank you so much Chris. Been watching your vids for a couple years and I think you are absolutely amazing
You are phenomenal! You have no idea how much inspiration and insight you give me. Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart
I’m a music & vocal teacher and this is some of the best shit I’ve ever found on YT. Always more to learn. Thanks so much!
The sighing is also really good for clean vocals too! If you sigh into higher notes, it feels way more free than simply working up to them by forcing. Start high, ease into chest - great stuff, Chris! Thank you :)
Nice tips Chris. I just recently on my own started doing the siren technique slowly building the voice like an aggressive riser because I also felt that it was a good way to roll into the grit. Thanks for the help and getting over the goofiness that it takes to begin achieving these skills. Your awesome!!
Thanks Chris
Solid approach! I gotta try this today
I saw his double tracking video on Dragula the other day.
When I looked up vocal warmup for screaming you know I had to click on this video. Dude has the pipes of an angel.
Thank you Chris
I send you as much vocal educational respect as I could!
You are very very good instructor!
Thank you very much for such a great impact in vocal community!
It's as if you knew I was tracking some hardcore songs this weekend 💙 Thanks for this!
Love you Chris
My man 👊🏻. Thank you for delivering
This is the best scream/grit tutorial I’ve had!!
I’ve always struggled with frying but it just came so naturally with this tutorial. Thanks so much for sharing your technique
Thank you for this video Chris ❤️ I have always wanted to get better at singing.
I was super excited to see this thumbnail! Can't wait to unleash!
Thank you for your dedication, I value your work very much..! 🤟
Wow, thanks Chris.
I DID IT YESSS THIS IS THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE. I'm sick but that didn't stop me and I finally did itttt
Bro. GOOD STUFF! Thank you!!🤘🏻
This is dope Chris!!!!!
Really love your videos, the exercises you propose are very easy to follow. Thank you so much!! 💓
Awesome video, gotta try these out tmr!
God bless you Chris 👏👏❤️
LOVEEE YOU CHRIS LIEPEEE!!!!!
Man you’re awesome, you‘ve helped me so much with you videos!
Subbed within the first 3 mins. This is really good free information and I’m so glad I found your channel.
Thank you I love these kinda videos!!!
I’ve been doing singing exercises for over a year on RUclips, I used to laugh at your videos. I didn’t get it. I DO NOW. You’re a goddamn genius enough said.
Nice tips as always chris thank youu
Thank you for these vids Chris! This is one of the best videos on how to get that screaming grit and how it should sound like 🙏🤘
Glad it was helpful!
man, I love you! this is so healing and releasing :D thank you for putting yourself out there! 🙏🏼
(in a brotherly way) ;)
Wow this is perfect for me.
Great video as always man! This one helps a lot :)
i tried changing my mouth shape to an "O" and did the high-pitch/break-down warm-up and that really helps me sustain that break down for longer, to really hone in on that break. i'm still in awe of your technique to "yell". i can't seem to get that down yet, but i'm trying to find that sweet spot where it sounds like yelling
Thanks Chris,
Chris has the coolest metal voice
Just clicked on eager to hear what that amazing voice of yours has to teach us today 😁😁
Yes.
I’ll start doing your warm ups from now on
I know this is probably not even good advice, but I seriously don't even want to listen to anybody else's teachings at this point lol. I feel like I've gotten the most value solely pretty much due to you man.
ur vids help me so much yo. thank u
Excellent thank you so much ❤
Awesome 😎
great! thank you very much, Bro!
I love the channel ❤
I was able to make some distortion kind of like the axl rose in the beginning of welcome to the jungle but have trouble getting the depth or thickness in that higher range of screaming but this was definitely helpful …
wonderful
what exactly is it that i have won?
Thank you Chris for all you do!! You’re RUclips videos have been very influential in how I approach singing!
P.S amazing gutterals!!
I have a dance role where i have to scream but i don’t want to damage my vocal cords while practicing it so gonna do these!! Thank you
I can’t stop laughing at the thought of of my neighbors LOL I CANT STOP LAUGHING I SOUND SO DUMB
Yesssss :)
Im not a rock or metal singer im more a classic one but i usually watch ur videos & tap the damn like ❤cz ur very knowledgeable in voice. Vocal Distortion is not in rock or metal i know its mostly in those but like in gospel for example Whitney Houston💜 songs she used alot of growlings, squalls, rasp u know🙂
Really helpful way to warm up, though I don't think, that everyone will learn harsh vocals without hurting his throat just a little sometimes. I appreciate 👍🏻
Today I learned that warming up my distorted vocal voice is incredibly necessary and very different from my singing voice
Also that I need to practice my lows and growls more
My dog loves these vocal warmups XD
I've been looking for something like this! I always practice my vocals in the car, but never really knew how to warm up, so I tended to just make something up that probably wasn't very effective and jump right into aggressive vocals. No noticeable damage has happened to my voice as far as I can tell, but it's still probably not good to growl and scream without some warm ups
Great exercises! These noises freaked my dogs out 😅
Chris! First of all, thanks for all the hard work and the valuable lessons you give us as vocalists. I wanted to ask about something that, in the context of a live performance, I'm not sure it's needed or not. Some weeks ago I found out about different vocal pedals for singers like the TC Helicon VOICETONE series or the Boss VE-20.
I know these pedals are ment mostly for vocal performers that don't have the assitance of a soundman...and since I use some effects and tools on my own recordings (reverb, radio-like distortion, dessers, etc.), that I can't use on my live shows, I'm not sure about investing on these equiment. I wanted to know your opinion about it.
Thanks in advance and I hope your channel keeps growing! :)

You should do a video where you analyze CeeLo Greens vocals on the song "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley
6:49 an opera singer falling down the stairs
Great video once again, man. Will definitely be trying this out
Like Mortal Kombat grunts and death screams
I've been practicing vocals with Woods of Ypres, I think that David Gold (R.I.P) had a pretty unique voice, and his songs could make for some great videos on the channel!
I been doing screaming vocals everyday and never thought about warming up. Gonna start doing it because I find my throat hurting at the end of sessions. Hopefully to better my screaming voice
“The sigh becomes a method for awakening my crack” 😮
My neighbors would love this...
funny that u brought up jared leto . i was listening to 30stm yesterday and i automatically thought u of
Head so clean you can see the camera in the reflection LOL just teasin Chris! Love these videos thank you!
The High Aaaassss breaking sounds like a video game character falling cliff to death 😆
After that other warm up video you just did I was wanting exactly this video topic next
Weird idea:
I would absolutely love it if you found a way to hire a few different voice types to run thru a script of a video such as this. I feel like your ideas, and segmenting of technique is superior to any other coach I've found. I just wish I could hear other voice types execute the exact things you do in your videos.
Like a puppet system. If you had puppets of different voice types to use.
Told you it is a weird idea.
its actually a good idea on paper, perhaps that could of help to other types of voice, especially other people beyond males (even tho its the same mechanism).
he has done that before i think once with a vocalist and producer
3:49 - I somewhat did have a gut feeling that all the aggressive screams have a lot to do with awakening my crack
the siren reminds me of THX movie intro lol
btw this actually helped me find my fry scream for the first time so thank you
You're welcome!
Break down on what Bryan garris from knocked loose does with his vocals please
Great stuff - now I just gotta figure out where I can do these warmups without people calling the looney bin on me. 😄
"hopefully you're listening on headphones..." yepp, on my Rokit 8s on nearly full volume... 😄
NICE
Someone should make song with samples of Chris going "aaeaaeaeaeeaahhhhhhheee!!!"
Chris can you make a video why does sometimes people when they sing they feel bored
I just love your videos! You own my most favourite channel here on RUclips :)
I think I'll stick with singing lyrics from other bands to warm up 😄.
Yo bro im searching for warmup video but im finding this video in my explore
I learned to scream by doing aggressive cleans with raspiness. My natural singing voice has a rasp. So for me I was able to use that rasp to discover how to scream. I’m still not a great screamer but don’t give up. I just started watching this channel but your videos have helped me learn to control my throat and vocals more. Keep posting these!
I saw a video on Melissa Cross who is a famous vocal coach she makes a lot of these same points!
I'll try it today. I must say, singing agressivly is a dream for me and thanks to your videos I could make my first screams come alive. You're a great awesome teacher and vocalist, thank you chris. I'd like to ask you something also. Can you make a video like this but without explaining that much about each step? So we can just follow through your exercices. It would be awesome. THANK YOU AGAIN
You're probably ready for this: www.mymusicalvoice.com/p/the-aggressive-vocalist-s-master-plan-of-attack
At the moment I'm doing site maintenance... but if the link doesn't work when you first try it... give it a bit and try again :)
5:55 I am soooo making this a ring tone.
Haha
man i studied lyrical singing almost 4 years and is so hard to let myself do this kind of things omg😭😭
6:02 sounds like the Count from Sesame Street climaxing.
Always listen to this without headphones. Still waiting to hear WHAT or a call and response.... one day... one day 🤣
🔥🔥🔥🤟
