    If your voice check reveals fatigued or hurt vocal folds DO NOT CONTINUE practicing. Rest until your voice is back to normal.

    My voice used to hurt so much and do these things when I'd try to scream, but when I finally worked on clean singing (for like a year), I finally could understand what people like you meant in tutorials! Now I can hear (you do sounds) and then make those same sounds way more naturally! Also I think one thing that blocked me from fry screaming in particular was literally trying too hard XD. Great video, keep it up! I'm happily subscribed!

      Clean singing can give you a much better access to your voice which can help you when screaming! And trying too hard, being too loud or too tense is a very typical fry scream mistake :)

    I've been wanting to learn to scream for years. Every time I've tried I gave up because I couldn't find any free/inexpensive tutorials that were good/in depth. Now that I've found yours, I'm finally giving it a real shot with learning fry screaming. So far I've got the buzz down pretty well. I usually sing with some "twang" and rasp anyway (big pop punk fan), so that came easy. Compression is a bit harder. Trying to sing while compressing is extremely awkward but I got it plus the buzz going a couple times. My throat feels a little weird now, but my voice is functioning normally. I made sure to warm up/test my voice prior too. Will try adding the breathiness next after resting for a bit. Really appreciate you actually making this feel doable to me, for the first time ever. Found you via someone's recommendation on r/screaming by the way!

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 года назад +3

      Hey there, awesome to hear that you are making progress! I recommend before learning the breathiness that you get very good at the compression + rasp first. Get each component going and build some strong muscle memory before you advance. You are in it for a marathon, not a sprint :)

    Screams and distortion still differ and should differ from voice to voice. When a scream or distorted sound carries over the unique timbral characteristics of your clean voice it's a good sign that you're singing sustainably without strain and this will result in a richer, more interesting sound. Think of the characteristic signature of each technique as being superimposed onto the timbre of your voice. These changes are the thing that should be the same for any singer.

    Good videos man! Gonna need some moooore! Could you elaborate on the difference between a fatigued voice and a "hurt" voice (when you did something wrong)? And also how should your throat, nose and mouth feel in the sence of straint and vibrations etc. Would be great

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 года назад

      The sensations can vary depending on WHAT you do, how LOUD you do it, and what PLACEMENT you have. Don't go so much by feeling but go by sound and how it makes your voice feel.
      A fatigued voice is where it is just harder to do the coordinations of singing demanding stuff and you need to be very very focused and do it exactly right. It may also be a tiny bit lower than normal. A hurt voice will have the warning signs i told in the video

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 года назад +1

      Unless you have a morning voice (just woke up, voice feels creaky, dry and low) there is no physiological need to warm up. You can do 5 minutes of quiet singing, comfortable range. Then 5 minutes of going gradually higher and eventually louder. Then practice screaming. Work your way up in terms of volume and power.

    The thing I think that keeps bogging me down is A: I don't sing, I don't have any vocal foundation to build on so if something depends on that foundation, I just don't have it and B: I don't know how to tell what I'm doing wrong from what I'm doing right, when I try to practice it feels the same as if I were just screaming at someone cause I was pissed off, and I know that's wrong because obviously pissed off screaming is super damaging to the vocal folds, but I don't know what it feels like to do it right so I don't know how to get there.

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 года назад

      You don't need to be able to sing to scream. It helps but it's not mandatory. In your case I'd recommend you to get a teacher or going for a step by step tutorial. I created a very long and in depth one at singandscream.com
      Check out the fry scream tutorial there and let me know if that helps you or not alright?

    I have never practiced screaming before and I admit you technique works very well. I don’t practice normal singing either, but I can sing Steelheart easily so I gave it a try.
    I tried screaming for a minute or two and at one point I even surprised myself with a scream so perfect (to me lol) that I would have never expected that to come out !
    After that, my vocal folds tingles a bit when I swallow, and it lasts for several hours, but I can still sing normally across my entire range, except some breathiness in the highs.
    It does that even when I sing normal high notes for too long (steelheart ahah).
    So is it normal that my vocal folds feel sore, probably because of the lack of practicing ?

    • @SINGANDSCREAM
      @SINGANDSCREAM  3 года назад +1

      Your folds should not feel sore. What is common at the start is that it feels itchy or provoking a cough or it feels very dry and afterwards your throat feels a bit warmer. These should go away after getting used to the false folds making sound. When practicing again closely monitor how loud and tense you truly must be when screaming. Often you can dial it back and people just push way too hard at the start.

    • @louisrmusic
      @louisrmusic 3 года назад

      @@SINGANDSCREAM Yes you’re right it’s more like itchy and dry. The more I practice, the less time these side effects last. Now it does it for no longer that ten minutes after a song.
