Will practices exactly what he says here about knowing your limits and resting your voice when needed. During Lorna Shore's Pain Remains II headlining tour, he had one show that for some reason was more brutal on his vocals. He recognized it and decided to take a break from meeting and talking with fans so he could rest his voice and be ready for the next show. I can only imagine how careful he has to be on tour when they have multiple nights of shows before they have a day off. I have a lot of respect for the amount of time he has put into his craft and self care so that we get to enjoy his amazing range of vocals. We can all learn from so much from him. Thank you Chris, for bringing these videos to us!
Definitely true. I was at the show the day after he had trouble with his vocals and he fucking killed it. Sounded exactly like the record as usual. Unfortunately didn’t get to meet him because of that but it was definitely worth it. Will is a beast
Cautionary tale: During my teenage years, I was doing vocals in a black metal band (a school friend group). At least I knew to warm up before every rehearsal... but other than that, I never knew what I was doing, I didn't do proper research in advance and I totally did it just by instinct (definitely not using my diaphragm etc) since it was "just for funsies". Some local dudes said my screams and growls sounded great on tape and I showed promise if I kept at it. After half a year I noticed I had these two big lumps behind (or inside?) my jaw and they were quite sore to minor touch. I started having these moments where I totally blew out my voice and couldn't even properly speak the next day during class. Fortunately our band disbanded after a while because later on my school music teacher told me that I could've lost my entire ability to even talk if I kept going like that. To this day, I don't really know what those lumps were, but my guess is some sort of throat / gums bloating kinda situation. As I said, this was years ago when I was a teenager and I fully recovered maybe after a month or so... but I still want to put this out there just in case someone else someday just wants to try and "go at it" without doing some proper research first.
Will is a hell of a nice guy for coming on these youtube channels to do things with them. He absoltely doesn't need to help them but he still takes the time.
As someone who messed up their throat and has a condition relating to my throat years after the fact, I can’t wait to see what nuggets this may offer! I miss vocals more than anything, and I was pretty good for a self taught kid
I didn't know this was a thing. I'm going to get my throat checked out ASAP, because if I have something medically wrong causing my problems, I need to know.
@Buddha Claus Studios same here! I practiced guttural some years ago, and after I stopped, I've been feeling my throat "wrong". I have coughs all the time, feel it dry and I need to clean it every time. Idk if you guys felt something like that, but definitely it's a condition I got after doing wrong practicing.
The advice of sticking to the basics is the best ever. I was able to do pretty damn good vocals for years, but then I decided that I didn't like my sound. Got obsessed with different bands and vocalists, wanting to exactly imitate them. Doing that I learnt some really bad habits to the point where I can now actually sing, but I can't do vocals anymore like I used to. Like, at all. I can still produce vocals, but they're either bad or I'll lose my voice, whereas before all the experimentation and trying to mimic others it came naturally without any effort (took practice to get there though). Don't be me. Practise, don't hurt yourself, feel free to experiment, but don't force stuff.
I really thank you and Will and TheCharismaticVoice for creating this. I've been thinking a lot that Will is so good that he MUST share his techniques. These vids are so helpful to so many. I spent several years not improving and doing it wrong. I have been 5 years now practicing it right. I finally figured out im not one that can do it really loud but i am consistent and not hurting myself. I am just now getting into the building confidence. Thanks so much to Chris and Will and all the others out there teaching proper techniques and reassuring people that it takes time. Great job guys!!!
When I first started playing in bands and doing vocals I wish there was all these videos. It took a lot of thrashing my throat to realize how important rest and changing techniques to do it right was. Years into it "the zen of screaming" came out. That was game changing for soooo many vocalist.
I usually scream throughout an entire day sometimes. If I’m home or even at work. When I’m pressure washing a truck or just waiting for the driver to get back sitting in the cab, I’ll sing Cattle Decapitation and Thy Art Is Murder. I can’t do Lorna Shore, but I haven’t sold my soul yet. And while at home I’ll walk around doing the lowest growl I can get that day, and they go to my cat and say “hey Tiny. Such a good girl, I love you” in a high pitched voice, and then go back to gutturals, take a break for an hour, and then do it again. They’re used to it at this point. Sometimes if I’m just taking a shit, I’ll do random high pitched screams. Im kinda like always warmed up.
Insane talent, and he knows he will get even better since he is for sure an excellent student of his craft. And he is still very young, he is already one of the best in his area, but I know he can get even more godlike.
I recently started adding vocals to my music and not over doing it and resting has been awesome. Every weekend I’ve been re recording vocals for a single song and after every weekend, I can actually hear my voice getting better, and more clear.
I've been singing for years but in other genres. Learning how to scream feels like learning how to sing all over again. Thank you for making it so approachable
Outstanding point about the natural progression. I was very aware of what the sensation should be after adding the tuvan throat singing, but couldn't seem to let it go properly. I couldn't make the mind body connection. Fast forward where I kept at it exactly how is taught and related here, and doing phrases with that technique led to my body naturally allowing the transition from tuvan into guttural. It took a could months frankly. I was already good at fry, but this also made my fry and my range better over time without trying to make that happen. All because the single warm up video helped level up my vocals. Thanks, guys. You've helped immensely. Shout out to David Benites, too.
Another tip which took me ages to figure out. Find your style and stick to it. I spent way too long hurting myself by trying to sound EXACTLY like certain vocalists and songs. First, recorded songs sound so different to live songs. Second, we're all built differently, so instead of trying to force out tones which you can't hit, find what it comfortable for you :) After I figured that out (and was happy with how i sounded), the amount of pain i felt after practicing basically disappeared.
There are some vocalists with a harsh tone, but not necessarily screaming and screaming. Vocalists like Sully Erna, Chad Gray, Wayne Static, Corey Taylor (at Subliminal Verses). This is very unique and it would be interesting to have a video talking about how to start or what is important to develop this type of characteristic. been taking extreme vocal lessons for a lil over a year now and i can say that enjoyingthe journey is definietely worth it. i finally have gutterals and false chords down pretty well but fry screams and anything of that nature that uses fry screams... im struggling. but that's ok! its about the journey and how seeing yourself progress through your mistakes.
I love your videos Chris, I've learnt so much. As a singer who is really a bass player and only became a singer as singers left bands and someone had to sing. And as someone with absolutely zero actual traing I really appreciate it. keep it bro Will's warm up course is awesome
At first, I thought it was only about screaming I'm not a screamer but I watched it from curiosity then after watching it I found the information super helpful for any kind of singer.
Funny thing, when I just started screaming, I had this exact misconception, in the beginning I was like: my screams sound REALLY weak, maybe I need to put more power into it and then I started getting sore afterwards, and I was like: Nah that's not it, volume doesn't equal good 😂😂 Anyway thanks for all the great content Chris, also got your Discover Your Voice course, really good stuff 😁😁 Also Lorna is one of my favorite bands and Will is fucking amazing 👌👌
Totally agree when I'm singing along to metal tracks and it hurts I stop immediately. Air conditioning does not help me at all. That's always directed away from me when I singing along.
Will Ramos is my all time favorite vocalists, he has the same amount of talent and knowledge for vocals that Dimebag Darrell had for guitar playing. Will Ramos is who i aspire to be as a vocalist (I am starting to get interested in vocals, ive been playing guitar for a little bit).
Practice Practice Practice! Ive been practicing my singing voice for 26 years, and only recently got into the harsher vocals. It took me 2 and a half years for it to finally click, but GOD it was magical when it did. Dont give up, dont get discouraged, trust your body when its time to stop, and PRACTICE
When it comes to vocalists Will is the best IMO just because of how consistent he is. He always sounds the same and he’s been doing this forever unlike how some vocalists blow their voices out
I'm a large unit at 6'1 & when I have X-rays they need to do a top & bottom slide of my lungs cos they're pretty huge. It means I've been pretty good with swimming but now I sing. I don't try to be loud but my neighbours hear me practice on the regular ha. I went to the Bruce Dickinson school of long notes 😂. This is such a great series y'all did, cheers from Australia
Great stuff from a great channel. Will's warm up course was an eye opener for me. I've tried screaming here and there and I have this high pitched sound nailed down that sounds ok (not great) and it doesn't hurt at all, but I think it's done with a different technique. Tried the warm up course, sounded like shit and was pretty beat after I tried to learn everything, but stopped right after I started to feel a bit too sore. Did the cooldown and now everything is fine and I learned so much about how everything should feel and how the different parts work with that style. Now the only thing to do is to know if I'm doing everything right and how to sound better in the long run.
I was in high school when I first started trying. Took me about three years too get to the sound I was pleased with. Did vocals for a few bands and some one offs. Then there was about a 10 year or more gap of nothing. I’m 35 now working my way back in to it. Two years of practice and I’m maybe half to what I use to be. The old vocal cords aren’t like they use to be. Before, I just got it. Learned by trial and error. Now I’m having to work harder with technique.
I just want to point out how great it was having him talk in the video with the reverb used for the screaming sample. Good way to make the point that part of what your hearing in the albums is the effects they add to enhance certain sounds
6:27 is actually a very profound and salient point that I think likely flew under the radar for many. I'm really impressed that Will put this into words in this way; he's obviously very intelligent and in tune with himself (which isn't all that surprising given his mastery over these vocals). What he said at 6:27 is the essence of learning new skills for which progression is sometimes quite ambiguous. The easiest way to explain this is with the analogy of learning to spin a basketball on your finger. You literally try to spin the ball on your finger and keep it there for as long as possible - there's not much to it. And at first, it will fall off your finger many, many times - usually within mere seconds. And there's not much to change up or adjust -- as long as you're getting a good spin the only other thing to do is simply "try to keep it on your finger for as long as possible". And therein lies the beauty of learning. You don't even have to understand what's happening or why; you don't even have to be aware of these things. Your brain is aware of the goal (to keep the ball on your finger for an extended period of time), but beyond that you really have no idea what to do in order to achieve that goal. However, your brain is constantly making micro adjustments to muscles in your fingers, hand, arm, shoulder, and etc. just beneath the level of your conscious awareness in order to bring you closer to the desired goal each time you try. It's keeping track of what worked, and what didn't, and all of this is going on in the background of your mind. And with continued practice you'll find that you're able to keep the ball on your finger for increasingly longer periods of time, until, at some point, you can spin it indefinitely. If I understand Will correctly, learning to scream is much the same way. You're aware of the sound that you're going for (the end goal), and you know the basics of what it takes to achieve that. Everything in the middle is unknown to you because it involves adjustments to different parts of your larynx and things that you don't naturally have much volitional control over, but over time, your brain similarly makes micro adjustments with each attempt, and iterates upon these changes, until you arrive at the desired goal.
I said it before,2 years ago, when u did the tutorial on serj tankian's vocals. Best channel on youtube. I m Davide from italy,i will absolute love to hear a tutorial with serj tankian. It would be the best thing in the world
As a 42 year old metal head who learned how to project from theater and transformed that to screams I can easily scream full on for hours still and be able to talk and scream the next day i can say the fundamentals and proper technique are what get you where you want to go. Also being able to completely relax your throat is where those deep gut screams come from.its the high notes that fuck me up. I have annihilated my high end vocals i can only barely hit a middle C but that's what shrieking with your vocal chords while drinking and smoking is no bueno. I envy Will's range its savage as fuck.
Wow, high information content in a short span for those tuned to the details of the craft, n'est pas? My own practices reveal truth in everything said here. It was round 19 years ago I started experimenting with the Tuvan thing, the lower throat distortion along with the vocal folds, architecture of my inner skull and chest not quite as detailed back then. Just 3 years ago thinking I could sing Dio onstage, and succeeded sort of. The practice in private is one thing, the intensity of the stage with live band that feels all your fuck ups and the audience is quite different. Now I can kick up the drone distortion, speaking of the crows are just doing that thing overhead. This is one channel that helped me hone the details after years of singing not quite knowing what I was doing, the anatomy so important! Thanks guys, you rock!
I love this guy!!! I never liked Death/ Metal core. In fact my entire life I hated it. But now because of Will Ramos and what an upbeat personality he has. Seams like the nicest guy in the world I am in love with Lorna Shore!!! 😅
I love how more so often then not he is actually looking at the guy and engaging in conversation versus just staring at the camera the whole time. I don’t know to me it just shows a level of respect that is hard to find these days
I’d love to see a clip of Will doing some growls/gutterals without being mic’d up and without any effects on it. It would give a great frame of reference for what kind of volume to expect from that vocal style.
Volume is different for everyone indeed. My bassist thought I was pushing way too hard just comparing with his volume but, we're just completely different!
Thank you both so much for this in all honesty you are one of my if not my favorite vocal coach you always give such an easy understanding of what is going on with the voice and have helped me understand my own voice so much more and Will being here makes this 20x better he's definitely got the experience to speak. you guys gave a wonderful explanation on things i already knew deep down i just forget from time to time so truly thanks for the tips! I hope you are having a wonderful day today wish you both the best keep up the amazing content much love!!!! 🖤🤘🤍
A big part for performing is training your endurance, or being smart about it. Like Will said, taking breaks is important, even when youre actively doing it for longer times. Ive been self training my screams for lets say 3 to 4 years. Its been more on and off, but I learned alot through Parkwaydrive and recently Lorna shore. Ive been recently trying to train fry's but im really not good at it. Been trying to sing along with Architects and Linkin Park songs. When i started out i made my throat hurt quite a couple times, but i usually know when to stop. Its so training intense, so even more Props to Will and Scream vocalists all alike, for being such Pros at it.
The moment I heard Will and played his Sun Eater, I fell in love, this voice Iam gonna grind, bcs imagination I can scream sing without that pain of wrong preasure sounds lolipop sweet.
Id usually say that "he's so good that made me quit and i haven't try" but there's something in Will's explaining that made me want to give it a try, love his energy i think he should do it very often, im here for Will the youtuber xD

He always sounds the same and he’s been doing this forever unlike how some vocalists blow their voices out
you both definitely my hero ❤

Fantastic advice! Thank You for sharing!
I said it before,2 years ago, when u did the tutorial on serj tankian's vocals.
Best channel on youtube.
I m Davide from italy,i will absolute love to hear a tutorial with serj tankian.
It would be the best thing in the world
Will Ramos = Like
Just watched the first video of the free warm up! Very cool, looking forward to see the rest and ultimately the Full Course... Great jobs Guys!
This vídeo is all singers need in general
Thanks Voice Guys!
I love this partnership! Great video guys! 👊
Te quiero mucho Will, quiero ser como tú cuando sea grande😵💫
I love this kind of content with Will, keep it up, mad respect to both of you
I love how more so often then not he is actually looking at the guy and engaging in conversation versus just staring at the camera the whole time. I don’t know to me it just shows a level of respect that is hard to find these days
Love this! Will Ramos is such a great guy!
Nice person🎉🎉❤❤
I’d love to see a clip of Will doing some growls/gutterals without being mic’d up and without any effects on it. It would give a great frame of reference for what kind of volume to expect from that vocal style.
...the phrase "whisper screaming" captures it pretty well...not much more than a raised speaking voice in many cases...
I’ve been fortunate enough to see will perform with Lorna shore two times. He never loses steam while playing live. Some vocalists do.
Volume is different for everyone indeed. My bassist thought I was pushing way too hard just comparing with his volume but, we're just completely different!
What a great video! Thanks!
🖤🤘🤍
Unbelivable...hypnotic ..perfect!
Great host. Great video
Great stuff!
Taking breaks will get you to your goal faster. Probably the most important thing I heard in this video.
he's so good dayumn
It’s funny to me how y’all are both super chill ass dudes lol then the vocals are another level lmao
You mean THE Will Ramos!!!!!!!!
These videos and courses are great. Thank you.
Great video keep up with the great work dude Will Ramos is a legend
@Chris_Leipe what
Niceeee starting out with Recreant, the first 7 string song I ever learned/covered
Excelente vocalista 😊
thank you very much guys \m/
Will is a cool dude, hard to believe that brutal screams come from that guy.
It will definitely take me a while to master or even get close to mastering screaming. I get the concept though.
Even though on no planet and in no dimension will I ever be a vocalist (trust me, it's for humanity's sake), I absolutely love these videos. They are so interesting.
