Great video! There really isn't much detailed content about these amps even though they've been out for a little while. I just got one of these back in May and have done a lot of experimentation with the internal presets at home, though have not gigged with it yet. I'm running a Fender P 50's reissue through it with an 8 ohm Ashdown 4x10 (looking to get a 4 ohm to get more power). I run it with no pedals before the amp or within the fx loop. Some things I noticed - the factory presets all seemed to put the Leo or Jim preamps first in the chain, which I thought was weird since they seem to be more of an amp sim. So I built 5 presets where pedals like the compressor, B3K, AO, Eqs or whatever else come before the Leo/Jim, and then put an Amp EQ at the end which is assigned to 4 of the front knobs. This seems like a more natural way to operate it. The drawback is that I have to whittle some of these chains down a bit to make room for cabism before I bring this out live. To switch between all of the presets I bought a used Tech21 Midi Mongoose and a 7 pin midi cable (so the footswitch can run off of phantom power). It works pretty well for now since DG hasn't put out theirs yet.
Question - do you ever use yours with any external pedals or other processing?

Sounds great and versatility is stunning! And ongoing support might be also depending on number of sales!

    Sounds fantastic.
Getting regular software updates is great until the updates stop and it reaches end of life. So much of the functionality is locked away in the app, when they cease support it looses most of it's appeal.
Personally much prefer my multifx in pedal format with a screen and controls so that they have a little more longevity.

Been a hx stomp user since 2019 don’t see myself changing that anytime soon but if this amp gets a sans amp update I definitely consider it maybe even a drop tune feature if that’s even possible without using 90% of cpu in seconds.

Looks a great amp with a ton of features but I wish they'd include footswitch capability. TC Electronic had a very similar idea about ten years ago with the BH series, albeit with less tweakabilty. Did you ever play those amps? I own a BH250 and I'm pleased with it

Hi Jonny! Best demo I've seen of this head so far!
I've been tempted by these since they came out.
I currently have a darkglass microtubes 900 (as you know cuz you've played through it 😅), and a pedalboard of mostly gain and a bit of delay and reverb.
Obviously selling everything and getting one of these would be a lot more convenient, but do you reckon it would be a downgrade in terms of the quality of the sound?
Also, do you know if you can split the signal and run effects in parallel?
And most importantly, has it got a 🐀 in it? 😅
Thanks for continuing to make excellent bass content.

Hey! Thanks so much 😄 Depends if you like buying gear or not. So once you have this, you're locked in vs being able to change out pedals. Depends how much yoyre turning on and off too, you'll need a midi controller to tap dance with this! The Rat is a great feature 😍 To my knowledge there's no splitting in that way, there is a send and return for outboard effects though

How do you save a setup, and can you easely change setup? There should be a pedal connected to the head, with which you could change set up per song, or in the middle of a song. Like any Multi effect.

Johnny, two questions : how would this 500w hold up in a live gig I used my svt 4 pro with plenty of power, and how are you supposed to change effects on the fly in a live setting, do you have to stop playing and either walk up to the amp and change effects or open your phone and do it through there?

    • @JonnyDibble
      @JonnyDibble  8 месяцев назад +1

Hi! 500watts is absolutely fine live, you do need to use the preamps inside to get the volume though. In terms of changing in the fly, you’d need some kind of smart switch controller. I might be wrong, I think you can use the Darkglass one?

@@JonnyDibble it’s more the darkglass suite that’s the disappointment. I have The element and the hyper luminal. The stock features are fine, just fine tho. Neither will do anything with the mobile darkglass suite. I don’t have a desktop, and maybe it would be different if I did (idk) the mobile app is garbage in my experience. I have the micro tubes 900 Medusa head, and it’s ok, I just have amps that sound better. My biggest issue is I had high hopes…
Sorry, sounds like I’m whining… Im just done with them.

I couldnt agree more, I have tried buying 3 different dark glass amps and had to send back all 3 of them, each one had a defect,. Two if them had the same defect despite being different amps.
It's not just that I think the sound is, like another guy said, a poor simulation. The distortion sounds so digital, I k ow it is digital, but I mean it just doesn't sound as good as like any analog alternative .
I do t know what the "modern bass sound" is, other than a marketing ploy by dark glass, making you think only they can deliver, when really all of their demos evolve $8,000 ding wall basses, if anything THAT is your modern bass sound, brought to you by not dark glass but ding wall basses

Yes you can use a computer as well but the situation isn't much improved. Go find some controller or interface from 10 years ago and try to use it with your current OS. This amp is in fact cool but it is disposable.

Only one problem with this amp. Its not 800 watts. What gives? Are they putting us on a diet. Bass is fat, get used to it.
Insight. I owned this when they first came out and took it to several gigs until I woke up. Its just not loud enough. And here's the rub. In the manual it mentions using the presets with the dark glass midi pedal. The Dark Glass Midi pedal. Again several, actually, half a dozen correspondences with Dark Glass service and the responses varied from. "We are working on it, right now we are having trouble with the supply chain." And that was understandable considering the War-demic. Half a year later I wrote and the response was, " Try any midi foot controller the amp is not proprietary." oh, but it is. But it is. Another Correspondence went unresponsive and I digress.
    Take Away:
    1. Walk away it's not worthy
    2. The selling point is you can change the presets with bluetooth using the app. Cringe.
    3. All this talk about pedals. This amp is a cactus, not a rose. No pedals, just presets which require a phone. How the heck is that practical on the fly.
    4. Its been about 2 years, NO MIDI PEDAL as mentioned in the manual. ( and No, the Dark Glass Midi pedal for its other powerful bass heads will NOT talk to each other.)
    5. They can't all be winners. Darkglass has knock about everything they swing at out of the park. This one is embarrassing and takes this 5 star company and gives it back to us at 4 or 4 1/2 star company.
    6. At home in your studio on the desk. Yeah, why not. Just do not take it to a gig. Rather stop at guitar center if you're in a pinch and buy any other bass head for the gig and return it the next day. You'll be happy when your gig goes well and your e500 is sitting pretty on your desk unmolested.

Just curious why you felt is wasn't loud enough? I have a 500w GK bass head and it's more than enough live. What cab and Ohm were you running live? I've thought about getting this head for effects. I own other amps but would like to use this for everything. Maybe because the is an effect platform, like Johny said, you might have to use the preamp effects to get full volume out of this head and not only really on the front knobs.

Nice scathing rebuke of dark glass, I agree 100%, I would never rely on a shitty phone app at a gig. That's terrible
