I feel as if the American cut significantly improved on this film in almost every way. Tighter pacing, fleshing out the characters more, having a bit of fun but not mocking the film much, an additional score by the great J. Peter Robinson and the much improved sound design.

    • @hellcatdave1

You took that as critical? The main attraction to the movie is Godzilla, for most people. So I wouldn't say he is being critical when he points out the lackluster consistency on the special effects. They are all over the place, which earlier Heisei movies didn't suffer from as much as they did from just rather cheap looking effects (something Gamera Heisei does way better).

One of my favorite things about this movie Is the Godzilla design. one of the coolest Godzilla designs ever and one of the cooler Godzilla kaiju ever, Orga. Too bad though the film was heavily rushed into production and the American verison dropped out the whole millennium subplot. I give it a 6.1/10.

Not only do I love how it was whipped up and released just one year after the '98 Emmerich film, I especially love how the US trailer uses Rob Zombie's "Superbeast" for the music, and the particular lyric "I'm the one that you wanted!" felt like it was specifically directed at fans who were sorely disappointed with '98 and would finally get a proper return of the Big G.

One of the few versions where the US cut is 100% an improvement(As others have said)....the pacing was tighter, the Dub had a lot of charm and personality, great pieces of additional(NOT full-on replacement) musical score, AND a completely new set of sound design.
The Japanese cut of the film is shockingly quiet, even for a Japanese film....which tend to have a lot less Foley and Sound Design in general.
To be brutally honest, the US cut of Godzilla 2000 is one of my more preferred Godzilla movies. It is simple and direct enough that you can watch it with virtually no outside context, and enjoy a film that checks virtually all of the boxes for a Godzilla movie that you want to see checked.
A lot of G screen-time, G appears early an fairly often, has an extended battle with the military who cannot bring him down, has an otherworldly adversary, and eventually does battle with another giant monster. Human characters that fairly realistically walk the line between understanding and combating the threat of Godzilla while also appreciating him as a scientific anomaly that should not be outright eliminated.
It places well in a marathon after G54, G85, and Biollante.

Orga's design, which looks a lot like Zilla's, and the fact that he tries to turn itself into Godzilla, makes the direct response to the 1998 movie all the more apparent. I feel like this movie really needed some sort of connection to previous movies. I know it shares continuity with the 1954 movie, but this is not really apparent in the movie itself and feels like we missed something in between.

I really like Toho decided to bring Godzilla back to Japan once again and started the Millennium series (1999-2004), ignores both the Showa series (1954-1975) and Heisei series (1984-1995) expect the original 1954 film. In this movie, this Godzilla is the second species of original Godzilla. Godzilla is anti-hero in order to save the earth of his territory from Orga.

I'm very glad my friends and I saw it during the middle of a weekday in an empty theater, so we could laugh our asses off freely. I love the ending where Yuji Shinoda says poetically to his daughter, "Maybe there's a little Godzilla in all of us...", then there is an immediate cut to Godzilla reducing dozens of city blocks into ash with his atomic breath.

Godzilla 2000 was kinda my first Godzilla movie. I just watched the final stretch of the film during a trip to San Miguel de Allende, in Mexico. I don't remember much besides the fact that it was very late at night and the final battle between Godzilla and Orga. Both monsters terrified me, but Orga in particular gave me nightmares because of the scene where he tries to eat the big G. But there was something about that scene that just stuck with me, maybe the original Akira Ikufube theme kicking in during the credits. I wouldn't really get into kaiju until I played Super Godzilla and watched the 1954 original film a couple of years ago, but because of that final scene that resonated so much with me, I hold Godzilla 2000 in a special place in my heart as my first witnessing of the power of the king of the monsters.

The human characters and the regeneration side plot are the two best things about the film. As interesting and unique as Orga is, I believe the film would've been best if there was no alien presence in the film and they focused soley on the characters and the regeneration plot. If you *have* to have Orga, make him be an experiment on the g-cells and their regenerative properties gone wrong, serving both as a cool monster/fight and as a subtle catharsis for Katagiri, whose narrow-sighted single-mindedness and arrogance bring about both a new monster and his end.

Godzilla's design in this one is my absolute favorite design, and the human characters are more interesting than any other G movie I've seen, at least in my opinion. My one and only problem with it is the terrible CG. You kind of have to give it a bit of a break seeing as it was made so long ago, but it really looks bad. Other than that I don't really have any complaints about it.

I'm super biased toward this movie, as it was the first Godzilla film I ever got to see in theaters. I was 9 at the time, and had been renting the classic movies at lot from my local Hastings. I really loved the modern special effects, as well as just how mean Godzilla was. The ending stuck with me and made me feel like this was the ideal interpretation of Godzilla. Not a good guy or bad guy, but not a nice guy either. More of an anti-hero. He saves the day because of his own reasons, then just resumes destruction. It was really unsettling to me as a kid, and I loved that feeling.

I thought Katagiri was a great pseudo-villain for the movie. I recognized the name of Hiroshi Abe (I knew I've heard/read of it before) and to my recollection, he also played Kenshiro in the Hokuto No Ken/Fist of the North Star Legends of the True Savior OVA movies. He's a great actor/voice actor, and he played this role perfectly in that he made you hate his guts. It's almost as if Godzilla himself realizes this too, which was a great idea to implement in the film.

It took me a while to warm up to this one. I didn’t immediately love the new design and I wasn’t a fun they shrunk him back down to 50 meters tall. It’s grown on me over the years. I’d still love to see the hesei series continue someday with Junior but that’s not happening.

Man, I still remember the hype leading up to the release of this movie.
After the disappointment of the Roland Eimmerich version, when trailers of this movie started coming out heralding the return of the true King, people went fucked ng nuts.

Got to see this one in the theaters. An underrated G-flick and in my top 10. Orga is a great kaiju. Solid plot and acting. Effects are endearingly uneven. Let's remember budgets here. Toho simply doesn't have 100's of millions to throw at a G flick and regard this as an early attempt to combine traditional techniques with new technology. As always the effects are more colorful and imaginative than realistic.

Having just recently watched the Japanese original, I think the film's biggest issue was its pacing. The American cut is just right, and I too wish the regenerative cells would have been touched on a bit more but it seems clear that they had a sequel mindset. Great vid.
