I dont' mind the way they kill him either. I basically took it as sheer anger and violence ends up destroying itself. I mean the impression I got from Taizo and his right hand guy was that they didn't think attacking Godzilla from the inside would kill him, they were just desperate to try to hurt him even a little. Some people take the ending as being a downer but I think it's for the most part happy. The last shot is just to show that Godzilla, just like past crimes, can re-grow and return. Not a case of 'oh fuck he's gonna grow back in a day and they won't have any Guardian Monsters!'

This movie is simply the best millennium Godzilla movie and one of the best Godzilla movies ever. God thank for letting the director of the Hisesi Gamera trilogy to direct an awesome entry in the Godzilla franchise. I especially love the whole concept behind Godzilla being death incarnated by ww2 souls, as well as the ancient Guardian monsters, which King of the monsters is kinda borrowing elements of, interestingly. The film could drag in the 1st act and some of the acting is very Hulky at times, but still the human and kaiju elements go together like P&B, accompanied with an awesome soundtrack by Kow Otani. Plus the special effects in this movie are top notch and visually spectacular. I Give GMK an 7.8/10.

@@Guyverman01 When you watch GMK, it's clear that Kaneko understands the Godzilla series, meaning every change he makes - even the radical ones - always feels natural. It's a diferent interpretation that makes sense and which is integral to the plot.
In something like the Anime Trilogy...well,that was made by people who do not understand the material (not speculation on my part, but a solid fact confirmed in interviews). As a result, the changes made exist in spite of the established material rather than because of it.

In regards to the ending of the film, I thought it was actually pretty solid. Considering that Godzilla in this film is possessed by the souls of those who lost their lives in WW2 and those who had been forgotten by Japan, it made sense how they killed off Godzilla. A point in the film was that Japan had drifted too far away from their honor, spirituality, and tradition by becoming more materialistic in nature, so the only thing that could sate the souls of the dead using Godzilla would be those who understood their suffering and respected the idea of honor, spirituality, and tradition. Taizo and Yuri Tachibana both embrace these philosophies by the end of the film. The Guardian Kaiju at the end of the film sense the determination of the Tachibanas and set up Taizo for the kill against Godzilla. The film ends with Taizo and Yuri showing reverence to the fallen and to the Guardian Kaiju, showing that they understand why Godzilla returned like he did and that this was a spiritual lesson for everyone involved to learn from. Taizo goes from being unable to see his daughter's potential to being inspired by her bravery and dedication, and reconnects with the trauma of his past, having seen the destruction Godzilla caused firsthand in 1954. In return, Yuri goes from an irresponsible young woman to a mature woman who understands why it's important to never forget your roots and those we have lost over the years. I thought it was a poetic and really awesome ending. Godzilla's heart beating at the end is a reminder that if Japan ever loses their way again, he'll return, leaving a foreboding and open ending. Amazing stuff.

Unlike 2014 and GXMG, Godzilla purposely destroys stuff. Godzilla shows no mercy and I adore it. The only reason he isn’t #1 is because this is only the second Godzilla film I’ve ever seen. This is probably one of my personal favorite Godzilla movies, despite the Ghidorah costume being pretty stunted and lame looking compared to the one on the poster. The film is a surprisingly thoughtful commentary on a post-Cold War Japan, told through the deconstruction of Godzilla's legacy as a representation of nuclear destruction, only for him to be morphed into a goofy kids hero. Throughout the film, no one takes the threat of Godzilla seriously, and people joke about how cute he looks and how he'd make a great pet. Only the people who lived through his rampage recognize the horror he represents, and this directly parallels the sentiment some felt about the general populous eventually forgetting the horrors of world war 2 as time passed, both those they inflicted and those they endured. They even use this commentary to poke fun at the older Godzilla movies, an example being two reporters treating the fight between Godzilla and Baragon as a wrestling match, only for them to be killed due to them not recognizing the severity of the situation. It's surprisingly layered and thoughtful, all while staying true to the core Godzilla elements that fans have grown to love over the years. Not to mention the fact that this has easily some of the best effects out of any of the traditionally made Godzilla films.
Shusuke Kaneko really is the Christopher Nolan of kaiju films.

Overall I'd say this is my 2nd favorite Godzilla film and favorite Godzilla film to actually watch. The original 1954 film is still the best objectively but GMK is more entertaining. It's also probably the best film for newcomers/non fans. The effects mostly hold up, the action is plentiful and well paced and even the human characters are decent.

I adore this film, one of the two Godzilla movies I own. I used to watch this constantly when I was younger. I would always comment about how Godzilla looked a bit fat lol, but that was never a bad thing. I also love how his atomic breath feels more powerful. The effect that they use when he uses it is really effective. Also, when Mothra gives her power to Ghidorah, that’s definitely one of my favorite Godzilla moments ever. Bloody beautiful and the score is phenomenal

By far, this is without a doubt the best of the Millenium series. My favorite of the entire Godzilla franchise, however I wouldn’t say it’s the best of all time.
Story was interesting, music is fucking outstanding, the visuals are the fucking best, I love the practical effects, the fights are great, it’s memorable, and I love almost everything about it. Almost.
The ending was, meh. And often at times whenever I rewatch it, I do tend to get a little bored and end it early sometimes, but not always or most. I still think it’s a good conclusion with the reunion between the daughter and father figures. Yuri I find to be memorable and her father. The characters in general are very memorable at that.
On a technical standpoint, it had major flaws: the CGI (as with most Godzilla films anyway in the Millenium series) is VERY dated, although gets better, the costumes are okay, but you can still point out the openings for the actors to get into the suits, Godzilla’s head is wonky and you can see the sockets of the animatronic part through the skin, Mothra as you mentioned is stiff, same thing with Ghidroah, and I could see several times where you could see the blue screen and the sets often looked flat, though still convincing. Defineyly an A-.

What I really like about this movie is the way how it’s unique. The only time where Godzilla and King Ghidorah swapped places, Godzilla as the main villain while King Ghidorah as the main protagonist. Mothra remains the same, so goes to Baragon. I like the way how Baragon has more screen time. And this Godzilla is the most evil, more evil than Shin Godzilla and Godzilla Earth. This Godzilla is more destructive and pure rage and revenge that he ACTUALLY kills people on purpose. That is one of my favorite series of all time

Of course it doesn't. Even when humans retaliate against it, that is still an act of evil. And it doesn't excuse our actions for creating it as well. Not sure if you got what I said, but retaliation in any sense is an act of evil.

In Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, Godzilla is formed by the ghosts of vengeful World War 2 victims. He has smooth charcoal-coloured skin, giant claws, white dorsal fins, and a hunched neck. His face is less lizard-like, with pure white eyes and no ears. But this Godzilla is mutilated by a drill missile, leaving only his beating heart behind.

I actually saw this at the Detroit Institute of Arts and was blown away. The parts I remember most are Mothra killing the kids who were going to drown the dog (which was perplexing), the scene you showed of the woman in the hospital (which reminded of a scene in Gamera 3), and the first appearance Ghidorah in the cave. I did enjoy Godzilla 2000 and Godzilla vs. Megaguiras though. To their credit, none of these movies had psychic girls to tell the audience how Godzilla was feeling.

I thought it was really interesting that the daughter Yuri thought that Japan still bore a burden of guilt for it's WWII crimes while her father saw the generation who committed indescribable war crimes as heroic patriots. To this day, most Chinese still hate the Japanese for crimes such as murdering the inhabitants of entire towns save for the young women who were made into sex slaves (and then often murdered). The Japanese army even tried to kill the entire population of the city of Nanking. This is my second favorite Godzilla movie after the first one, though not for it's political content. It's just a great movie!

I sometimes wonder how better off, financially and diplomatically Japan would be if the powers that be in Japan had ever made a genuine attempt at acts of reconciliation with Taiwan, Korea, and the various island nations they invaded that aren’t Australia. Would they have better immigration policies that encourages more laborers and trained professionals like doctors, scientists, engineers, etc to move to the country on permanent basis? Would there be less military tension between China and Japan over fishing lanes and overall less animosity between the two countries? It seems like Japan’s collective reluctance to acknowledge anything inconvenient about their recent history is dooming them to a future of either economic or total subjugation at the hands of the expanding powers of their powerful Post-Communist neighbor.

Great review and I really appreciate how well you were able to explain your thoughts on the film. This is one of my favorites, but growing up and becoming more familiar with how films can be tied to a nation's culture, political nature, and vice versa, (and also with a better understanding of Japan's culture throughout the years) I think what makes this film better for me and possibly others with age is that it is actually a great use of using the monster formula in a form of satire to make a political statement. I understand if some people may have issue with pointing this out, but considering how this film makes a lot of not so subtle political jabs at elements of certain Japanese movements, I think it's inevitable what must be discussed when it comes to this film.
See, Japan has always had an ugly history with nationalism. Nationalism, of course, was one of the prevailing philosophies during the Second World War along with the ideas of fascism and totalitarianism and how all three worked off of each other. Japan, of course, committed numerous horrific atrocities during the war both to its own people and, as many of you may now, China and other countries and territories across its western waters. The massacres, mass rapes, comfort women, etc. are all recorded in history as some of the worst human rights atrocities a nation has ever committed. But years after the defeat of the war, many political groups and prevailing ideas in Japan, TO THIS DAY hold this idea that the people of the nation are superior to their inferior surrounding neighbors and that the crimes committed through Japan's imperialist expansion during the war were either more justified than some say, actually for some form of greater good, or are exaggerated. During the late 90's in particular, numerous right-wing and conservative parties kick-started movements to revise Japanese history when it comes to education to either downplay or leave out the numerous horrific actions the Japanese government committed during WWII. The most notable of this came in the form of nationalist groups pushing for "education reform" especially with Japanese textbooks.
How GMK ties into this is that Godzilla, instead of becoming a symbol of nuclear destruction and horror in war as he original was, becomes a LITERAL EMBODIMENT of the destructive forces of all the murders and carnage that Japan committed during the war. He is the villain this time, but his origin story and how it ties into the culture that the movie sprang from and the subtext (or in some cases just text...) makes an over the top depiction that ignoring and brushing aside all those unjustly murdered by the government is a terrible idea. And as satire works (using exaggeration or irony to make a critical point) instead of just making it a political drama or down to Earth thriller discussing the debate, a literal firebreathing monster which destroys everything in its path is the manifestation of this idea that people should just brush aside the fact that countless lives were unjustly ended thanks to the nation in the past. I think that's why even if I understand why some may find the ending a bit of a downer and not logical (although this movie is already about a monster that gets created through the ghost of dead war victims) it fits perfectly with the theme of the piece. Godzilla is an angry vat of unfiltered and overly powered rage and destruction, so the idea that he would still try to unleash more devastation and kill himself with a whole in his neck than just quit being a horrific force is a reflection of how idiotic the filmmakers think it is of Japanese citizens to go to the lengths of erasing their own history than just to own up to the clear war crimes committed. And I think the beating heart, on top of on the surface being a teaser for more sequels in the future, is a metaphor to how destructive revisionist nationalist movements can rise up and continue to exist over the years. Kind of like how even when Japan's horrific nationalist empire was defeated supposedly once and for all in 1945, there are still movements that act as apologists or revisionists for said regime.
I think this is why even if it seems on the surface that Godzilla's origin in GMK is a huge radical departure from his nuclear beginnings, it is brilliant because politically and culturally, it still matches what he has always stood for. A grim reminder of the horrors humanity has committed, and that before things can get better, things need to get worse. FAR WORSE at points. It's just that this time he is an allegory for the destructive consequences of ignoring and downplaying horrific past atrocities and how those who never learn from history are doomed to repeat it, instead of nuclear warfare. This whole film is kind of like if here in America, (where we have had a surprising surge of apologists and revisionists trying to downplay the horrors of the Native American genocide committed by European colonization) somebody made a film where the ghosts of indigenous people came together and formed a slasher villain who begins terrorizing a nearby town.
I think this is where Godzilla can really be potent and why films such as the original, GMK, and Shin Godzilla can really resonate with me. Don't get me wrong I like more of the zany, mindless, and somewhat less political installments (even if everything is political to some degree...), but when directors use the image of Godzilla and the format of the giant monster movies to make statements, commentary, and messages on the culture and political nature that sprang from them, it makes the monster seem timeless. It also indicates a nobility of risk-taking and elevation of the material to a whole new level.

Anguirus and Varan were originally intended to be in the film because they were both weaker than Godzilla, who was intended to be the most obviously powerful monster in the film. They were replaced with Mothra and King Ghidorah because they weren't considered popular enough to draw in a large audience.
This caused much confusion among American fans because Anguirus was widely considered much more popular than Baragon there. When suit designer Fuyuki Shinada found out that Varan, his favourite monster, had been cut from the film, he incorporated some of Varan's facial features into Ghidorah's.
