Still the best MechaG, change my mind.
I will not attempt to change your mind because I 100% agree with you!
Gojiratheking106 no thanks, Kiryu is too Dope
Showa Mechagodzilla could withstand a decent amount of punishment, and had a completely impenetrable forcefield.
Heisei Mechagodzilla had a synthetic diamond heat shield that completely absorbed all beam-based attacks!
Kiryu... was knocked down and nearly crippled by a single blast of Atomic Breath. Twice...
Seriously, Kiryu’s strength, firepower, and durability all pale in comparison to that of his previous two incarnations.
Heisei Mechagodzilla is the best Mechagodzilla. He’s an emotionless, cold, unstoppable killing machine. Any opponent who can take on Godzilla and Rodan at the same time, and kill both in the process (if only temporarily killing Godzilla), deserves mad respect. Heisei Mechagodzilla is like the Godzilla version of the Terminator. Just a ruthless and emotionless machine.
Gojiratheking106 I agree
@@Gojirawars03 while you are dead right, I will always prefer the downright villainous design of the original. Showa Mechagodzilla is just amazing
Extremely underrated. Perfectly balanced the Kaiju and human scenes. Really compelling and likeable main characters. An interesting plot. Awesome Godzilla and Mechagodzilla designs. Incredible special effects, cinematography, and action. Really awesome soundtrack. It's one of the gems of Tokusatsu.
I wouldn't say it balances the kaiju and human scenes, ironically this movie is slightly more human focused but it's the good type of human focus movie that leads to a good final battle
Agreed This too is one of my favorites alongside Godzilla 2000 Millennium
This movie definitely has my favorite lead human character in the Millennium Godzilla films, sure it may not be as epic as GMK, but to me this movie has a better human protagonist.
P.S. Yumiko Shaku is hot.
Amen to that. Plus she one of the few human characters in a Godzilla movie that I actually cared about. Which is rare.
thanks for deleting my comment. can say p*rvy things but not "too p*rvy"
One of my favorite, and what I believe to be one of the most underrated Godzilla films of all time.

switch board why are you everywhere
@@mvgikk1969 Why are you stalking me?
welll yes, but actually no
Yeah this and Tokyo S.O.S are in my top ten favorite Godzilla movies
I fucking love Kiryu. As a kid he was my absolute favorite kaiju, especially when I played the old game Godzilla Unleashed.
Wasn't he kinda weak on that game tho?
Huh I always thought of kiryu as female for some reason?
Michiru Oshima really nailed Godzilla’s theme. The music for this film is outstanding.
I freaking LOVE this version of Mechagodzilla!
Finally a Godzilla movie that feels like a part of a larger cinematic universe. This is also my favourite Mechagodzilla incarnation, which is basically the revival of the original Godzilla, being forced to fight the new one. This makes Kiryu a really tragic figure, even more so in the sequel. Still, this movie feels kinda incomplete without it's sequel, which may have been intentional. I wish this continuity got more sequels, but I'm glad we got a satisfying ending. I give this one 4 out of 5 stars.
Nah this movie is super mediocre. 5/10. Mechagodzilla should have gone evil and become self-aware and self-controlling. Instead, it's just generic like it was in Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla 2. That's why I like Mechagodzilla best in Godzilla vs Kong because in that movie no one is controlling him, no aliens, humans, no one. He just goes rogue and is evil. Love that version
@@NeilYoungHorne I can respect your position. Even if I don't entirely agree with it.
@@NeilYoungHornetotally agree with you, this was basically a remake of the Heisei era one except more boring in every way
My favorite Godzilla film in the franchise, Godzilla's design is Awesome, Mechagodzilla comes back looking amazing, the Score is Phenomenal, The plot and twists are very interesting, and it's balanced perfectly between the human and monster characters. But are right, it is a basic Godzilla film through and through. But despite that, I love this Godzilla film.
Godzilla is now back to portrayed as destructive force of nature without any malicious intent. I really like Godzilla's design. This only time that Godzilla and MechaGodzilla/Kiryu that feature in this movie of the Godzilla franchise with no other monsters involved in this movie.
You do realize this mechagodzilla wasn't that powerful at all right
You know what? I’m not afraid to admit it. This is my favorite Godzilla film.
I still really like this film. I’ve seen it 3 times. I legitimately cared about the three main characters. Really liked the design and origin of Mechagodzilla. And it’s got some really good monster action. I think this ones kinda underrated. Easily in my top 15
Connor Ryan Some people make the other Mechagodzillas sound like One Punch Man. This is definitely the most balanced Mechgodzilla. It looks good and it has bugs in the system. It is actually realistic in a sense it could actually move not like the 2000 version that was just a metal dinosaur and couldn’t move in the real world.
Same here. I really feel for the lead character.
While by the numbers, I too feel that this is one of the more under-rated films. It has a lot of plot and character echos of Megaguirus....but this time handled with a more cinematic flair. Had they started with a movie a little more like this in 1999....perhaps the Millennium series could have been something to grow into another Heisei era of strong continuity.
I had a major crush on the female pilot as a boy
I'm pretty sure EVERYONE had a crush on her the first time they saw the movie. After all, she's played by YUMIKO SHAKU! :)
i had a crush on 2004 gigan
@@dendyxyz lol
You mean as a kid?
@@engineergaming1509 yes lol as opposed to a man. I meant this in age, not gender
The Kiryu Saga films are my favorite MechaGodzilla movies and story's
Not gonna lie, I actually think this one of the better films in the franchise. Easily in the Top 10.
Tied with Final Wars as my favourite Millenium era movie. Has some of the best human characters in the franchise. Plus Kiryu is just...well Kiryu, he's great.
This was one of the first Godzilla movies I added to my collection. I even brought it to my middle school homeroom to watch after our finals.
When I was younger, I was under the misconception that the Godzilla in this movie was actually Godzilla Junior from the Heisei series and the reason that he kept coming back to attack Tokyo was because he was angry that the humans had taken the bones of his father from the seafloor.
Edit: Marathoning the Godzilla reviews and I just remembered my favorite shot of the film with Kiryu powering down after his rampage. Aside from the gorgeous sunset lighting and wide shot, the way that Kiryu's head slumps forward as he deactivates makes it seem like he's bowing his head in shame over losing control.
I'll be 100% honest here-I did not expect to like this movie as much as I did.
Going into it blind, I was thinking the same thoughts that you mentioned-"Oh, they're bringing back Mechagodzilla in an attempt to make money? How original." But Kiryu pleasantly surprised me, with an incredibly cool design/ability set and an even more intriguing backstory-made from the bones of the 1954 Godzilla, how cool is that? The scene where Kiryu rampages through Tokyo is my favorite scene by a long shot, seeing his glowing red eyes puncture the smoke as he walks through buildings and blows up everything around him honestly took my breath away upon my first viewing. The characters are a massive step up from previous Millenium entries, Akane especially being the proof that human characters CAN be good in a Godzilla movie. Michiru Oshima's score is amazing as usual (the Kiryu theme, while nowhere near as good as the other MG themes, is still very good), but I think the Godzilla theme that plays in this film lacks the 'punch' that Godzilla vs Megaguirus's theme uses so well. But that's really my only problem with the movie, it's just so well-made.
Probably my second favorite of the Millenium series, just barely coming in behind Final Wars.
Wasn't the first mecha godzilla logically made in godzilla's image so it could pretend to be Godzilla aka Fake godzilla?
Yes.
My new favorite Millennium Godzilla movie. It's almost like you can feel Kiryu's internal battle.
I can't believe you didn't bring up the absolute zero cannon! Coolest part of the movie for me
Godzilla X Mechagodzilla is an ok movie. Kiryu is such a unique mechagodzilla, it's like evangelion mixed with Mechagodzilla. Love the design, weapons and how it's built around the bones of the Gojira 1954, and how the soul of the 1954 Godzilla controls Mechagodzilla. Everything else is Ok. I give it a 6.5/10.
Yes! Having seen both of them, Kiryu is a formidable and interesting looking Mecha-G; the Showa & Heisei versions always seemed kind of dopey; in addition the sets and models and destruction effects were first rate--and the musical 'theme' was great as well.
Damn right.
His my favourite mechagodzilla from all other incarnation.
I have a bandai Japan mechagodzilla from tokyo sos
@@SaurianStudios1207 same here.
And i just got it recently.
It not even be a month since it went to my possesion.
and why they make godzilla weak
Funny you upload this around Easter. I associate this film with Easter because I got it as a gift in an Easter basket on Easter Sunday I think when I was 9.
I used to get Godzilla movies in my Easter basket too! I remember getting vs. Destoroyah and vs. Spacegodzilla together one year. Good times.
3 stars?! WHAT. I would have thought this movie would be 3.5 or a low tier 4! It's action and fast pace narrative is what makes me LOVE this movie! and MechaGodzilla looks utterly badass! Nice video by the way.
My three favorite elements of this movie are it’s great human protagonist, the twist of Mechagodzilla turning temporarily evil, and the fact that fight between Kiryu and Godzilla is the most similar to an anime fight scene in any of the Toho Godzilla movies
I saw this recently when it was rereleased in theaters for a couple days, and brought my younger cousin along with me. He had only seen the newer US movies with me in the past, with this being his first Japanese Godzilla. We had a great time!
This was the first Godzilla movie I ever saw in full; got my parents to rent it for me on DVD from Blockbuster (back when THAT was a thing!), Kiryu was freakin' awesome!
This is actually my second favorite film of the Millennium Series, just behind Godzilla 2000 (American Cut). I love Michiru Oshima's score, to the point that I actually bought an import of the original King Records CD online a few years ago. But the most interesting thing to me, however, is that fact that THIS is the closest thing we have to a live-action Evangelion movie. Kiryu is basically an Evangelion, only made from Godzilla instead of an Angel.
This is my favorite movie in the Millennium Era. It has my favorite cast characters of the Era. While I really enjoy the relationship between scientists and his daughter; Akane is actually one of my favorite characters of the franchise. This is also my favorite Mechagodzilla design and is my favorite Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla fight (side note I love Kiryu doing Terry Bogard's Power Charge on Godzilla). I love Michiru Oshima's Kiryu theme and that they brought back her Godzilla theme from Megagirus. My biggest grip with the movie is the CGI. While much better then the other movies of the era it still isn't done well and easily stands out. Other then that blemish it's my favorite Mechagodzilla movie, favorite Millennium movie and in my top ten of the franchise.
Your reviews are so good and articulate.
The 2002/03 design is my personal favorite out of all the Godzilla suits.
This and Tokyo S.O.S are my favorites.
Kiryu is my favorite rendition of Mecha G. He looks like an an awesome mech from a classic anime.
Fantastix review! This brings back so many old memories, the Goji design is by far my favorite!
Really loving your reviews
When I first saw this I was blown away, fucking loved it and thought it was one of the best Godzilla films out there :)
Yeah you have some great points here about the plot, but I still like it and it has a lot of nostalgia for me :)
Love your channel top notch reviews thanks for the uploads cheers from montreal
The premise is so dope. Mechagodzilla built over the bones of the original and the DNA in those bones reawaken the original Godzilla.
So in a way we get to see OG Godzilla vs. the New Godzilla.
Anyone else wanna see Yumiko Shaku in another Godzilla film?
Everybody were gangsta until Kiryu shows a Vietnam War flashbacks.
I hope toho continues the kiryu universe after Godzilla vs Kong
I dont know how they could design Mechagodzilla better than this without just improving this one. I love the way this thing looks.
Leaving a like & a comment because I love your channel & miss your dulcet tones, Brandon!
One of my favorite Godzilla films.
I actually prefer this movie over Tokyo S.O.S. The characters are far FAR stronger than in the latter film and the interconnections of the past monster movies make the movie feel like it takes place in a real universe.
A really, REALLY underappreciated Godzilla movie.
YES! I live these types of videos for Godzilla!!
Hey, does anyone know of a streaming service where you can watch godzilla films? I want to watch some before the new film comes out but our local VHS store went out of business and that was the only place I could rent them at.
Kiryu is too awesome!
One of my favorite godzilla movies.
Best Mechagodzilla design, Best Godzilla design. Absolutely love the poster of this one.
Great review!
this is my no.1 favourite movie of all time, and it feels great to know that i'm not the only one who likes kiryu's design more than the original's. it was and still is a disappointment that the main character didn't return in tokyo sos as the main character.
Now I agree with most of these reviews, but GxMG is by far one of the best Godzilla films
Aside from a few new ideas, it's a very been there done that Godzilla movie that offer little new from what was done before. It sets up Tokyo SOS which was better, but other than the updated cool design I fail to see what makes this a standout Godzilla movie, or the best Mechagodzilla movie.
@@derajnitram1882 Well a good main character helps
Just watched it and i have to say its one of the best Godzilla movies I've seen (watching through the Japanese series currently scene watching Minus One)
First Godzilla I’ve ever watched when I was a kid, and I love it!
To me, the appeal of this film is mostly the spectacle. The effects are honestly the best out of any Godzilla movie, with great miniatures and practical affects and less painfully obvious cgi than past movies, and same with the monster designs. Mecha G is a perfect blend of past incarnations, and Godzilla, as I see it, is a perfect blend of the Heisei Godzilla and Godzilla 2000 design wise. Gives it that modern edge but a more classic build and posture, and gets rid of the stupid purple spines, gnarly teeth, and hunchback pose.
Just watched. Enjoyed. Sound track was great.
best Godzilla suit design
watched this one for the first time today and man was it fun
Well hello there!
This one is probably the sweatest movie in the franchise. Made me happy that they connected the other Showa Godzilla movies.
I really like this film a lot, it’s got great action and decent characters. This is probably my favorite Mecha-G design without a doubt and it being armored over the bones of the original Godzilla makes it more unique. I love my S.H. Monster Arts figure from the movie.
The music and that version of Godzilla is always a win. xD
Was my favorite Godzilla movie until KotM came along. This will still be number one in my heart though. It's SO slept on by Fans. Much better than a lot of the movies in the series.
I wish we had seen more scenes where mechagodzilla became self aware and destroys tokyo
It never fails. Watch a review of one of my favorite G films & without fail UFTD gives it a tepid response. Ultimately it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, my opinions won't change and my love for those films will remain, its just something I've noticed. As always, to each their own.
To be honest, the Mechagodzilla in this film is actually my all time favorite design in the franchise.
I still have to watch several other Godzilla japanese films, but so far this is my top favorite movie. I love it!
This was the first Godzilla movie I ever watched and it got me hooked and while 1998 was a let down to say the least I still loved the franchise.
this movie is honestly one of my favorites in the franchise
This movie and its sequel have my favorite design for Godzilla! I feel like it’s a nice blend between 2000 and heisei look and isn’t dramatic enough to leave it a black sheep in The Whole roster for better or worse. The scare he gets in SOS makes him look all the cooler.
Why does on the back of my Godzilla against mechagodzilla dvd case it says Mothra is in this this movie but I don’t see her anywhere?
Ah yes, the movie that introduces us our first ever waifu Akane 🗿
Ight ima go touch grass now
I love this film
This happens to be the only toho Godzilla film I watched as a kid
Does anyone understand why the scientist seems so into her right away. After just watching it, that first interaction in the cafe seems a little odd? Was their some background they had that I missed?
This is my favourite Godzilla movie of all time.
Kiryu is the best Mechagodzilla, probably tyig in with Legendary's.
I absolutely love this movie. It's easily in my top three Godzilla films. It has awesome fight scenes, the perfect design of Mechagodzilla, my favorite design of Godzilla, and interesting human characters with developed personalities. It's just a shame they were all discarded in Tokyo SOS.
So this is where the MonsterVerse got the idea of using Ghidorah's skull to create Mechagodzilla!
This was the coolest Mechagodzilla
Love that Toho drew inspiration from Neon Genesis: Evangelion for this movie.
The design & idea behind this MechaG (Kiryu) was great but MechaGodzilla II from Heisei era is my most favorite entry among the Godzilla Vs MechaGodzilla movies.
I loved this movie so much.
While I do like this film, my biggest problem with this movie is Godzilla himself. This is a great design for him, but in every action scene, he just stands there like a Dingus waiting to get hit by Mechagodzilla's attacks. Gmk Goji was really expressive throughout his film, but here, Godzilla is less expressive than the Showa era Godzilla's. Either way, despite this pretty nitpicky problem, I still like this movie.
Even though Tokyo SOS is my all time favorite, I group these two together. They complement each other perfectly, but Godzilla X Mechagodzilla definitely showcases exactly why Kiryu is loved
I loved this movie! I always had a love for mecha growing up with gundam figures and watching robotech. I watched godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla with my brother when we were growing up and thought it was a fun idea but I hated that Mechagodzilla was the bad guy. I never saw godzilla vs Mechagodzilla 2 and only knew of the character from godzilla destroy all monsters melee gamecube game. It wasn’t till I played save the earth that I learned of Mechagodzilla 3 or the name I would later learn, Kiryu. I loved his design, I thought it was so cool. I decided I had to find the movie he was from. Then one day at blockbuster I found it. I loved the movie to death, it had awesome fight sequences, I got to root for him, and kiryu was way more complex than some tool the humans use. I love this design so much I have a s.h.monsterarts figure of kiryu. This movie is easily one of my favorite Godzilla movies, hands down.
Forrest Games I am with you. The fact that Godzilla was the villain and then boom just throw this in our face and then boom Godzilla is the hero now. That’s just unrealistic.
Kind of, sort of haunting that they built the robot using the original Godzilla skeleton. But still a great movie and plot!
This movie was great. I loved the action in the movie along with the characters. Kiryu is my favourite MechaG design of all time. The Godzilla suit, while a little chunky, is much better then in Godzilla vs Megaguirus. This movie is a huge upgrade over some of the other millennium movie. 8.5/10
I love this kaiju can you make more please
I have seen this before. Pretty fun.
3式機龍はカッコイイ!
This is the movie I use to show new people that Godzilla movies are cool. It works very well.
I hope the new movies go this route. The bones of another Godzilla are found in the 2014 version.
Yeah, but since MonsterVerse Godzilla is portrayed in a mostly heroic light, I don't think it would make much sense for anyone to create a giant cyborg like Mechagodzilla, especially considering just how BIG the MonsterVerse Godzilla is.
nice
happy godzilla day!!! :3
what i like the most about this movie is that it is the only movie so far where godzilla and mecha godzilla fight 1v1. (the anime does not really count as that is mechagodzilla build into a city rather then a mecha)
This is a very fun, very traditional feeling yet more modern Godzilla film than its predecessors. I really like it, but besides Mecha G's crazy origins, it is pretty basic, and I agree with this score. Still, KiryuGoji is one of the best Godzilla suits ever, thanks to his awesome design and amazingly expressive face.
Subscribed. Nuff said.
Such a shame that Akane Yashiro wasn’t utilized more in the series.
This is my favourite Godzilla film of all time. Don’t care how you say I’m wrong. I love this film
