      The biggest kaiju cock tease of all monsters. The story is pretty good, and for a while it works well as a sequel to 1984, but my GOD does Biollante get side tracked as a villain. The stage was set so well, but the final confrontation was so nerfed.

Saw it a couple years later and couldn’t stop thinking of it. To this day it’s my second favorite after the original . The Japanese polled it especially high recently too. Godzilla vs Biollante is one of several Godzilla films where watching the Dubbed version might make for a smoother and superior experience. Yes, the Dubs in general have bad voice acting....but once you get beyond that general rule of being at a lower standard....you can appreciate getting the whole film in English without any bad "Engrish" ruining the experience or creating inconsistencies.

    • @UpFromTheDepths88
      @UpFromTheDepths88  5 лет назад +19

      Yeah, the English dubbed voices of the English speaking actors, while still kind of cheesy, is miles better. This is the case in all the Heisei movies.

      I quite like the dubs for some of the Showa-era stuff like Ghidorah, Rodan and Invasion of Astro-Monster, but they also made a few unnecessary edits. Heisei-era dubbing can be a tad naff at times, but I do appreciate being able to watch the movies while I work, which is kind of imperative with the whole situation the world is in right now.

    • @ChrisPeteG
      @ChrisPeteG 3 года назад +4

      @@channelwithout It would be interesting if, for Godzilla's 70th anniversary....Toho not only did 4K restorations of every G film(which they have done no less than 8 movies at this point)....but also perhaps commissioned new English Dubs for every film from a handful of well known/professional Dubbing companies/studios.
      We're at a point now where the quality and availability of the English Dubs for Godzilla films is wildly varied. Some are not officially available, for some, only edited/alternate versions have English dubs, for some, the theatrical cuts have Dubs....but they are of a clearly lesser quality.
      It would be a nice 70th anniversary 'present' to be able to enjoy EVERY Godzilla film, in the original version, with a relatively high quality and accurate English Dub.
      One can dream.

    • @channelwithout
      @channelwithout 3 года назад

      @@ChrisPeteG unlikely, but could be an interesting idea if the right cast was chosen. The typical response would be "why don't you just watch the subtitled version". Here's the thing, I do. In fact, I tend to watch both. But a good dub makes an imported property a lot more successful and likely to get the recognition it deserves, Cowboy Bebop being a good example. Heck, it can even rejuvenate an otherwise uninteresting property like the infamous anime "Ghost Stories". I think Godzilla Raids Again would be much better if it received an uncut dub.

    I also wish there was a version of Godzilla vs Destoroyah that could function as more of a direct sequel to this film. I feel that Return, Biollante, and Destoroyah are the overall strongest of the Heisei series. It is just that the presence of Junior would be unexplained.

    The first time I saw anything of this movie was back in the early 2000, when I went to the video store. I remember specifically seeing a VHS Of this film and on the case, the art was that of the poster. Biollante in the background, Godzilla in front of her and vines crawling up his legs. I thought it was awesome! When my family got the computer and RUclips became a thing, the music videos of Godzilla was my first real exposure to the scenes of this film. This film is one of the best in the series, and a HUGE upgrade from the previous film. The Godzilla design is easily the best in the series (aside from the slightly modified version of the same suit used in the next movie), the characters are much more interesting, the story is way more action-packed and investing, and the themes of the dangers of Bio-Engineering were a great direction to take the films. The idea of a monster created from Godzilla’s DNA would be done multiple times after this, with mixed results. I’d say my favorite of these Godzilla Clone monsters would be SpaceGodzilla, but from a visual standpoint, Biollante is easily the most impressive. Her design is astounding, dwarfing Godzilla in some shots, and her puppetry is easily some of the best practical effects I’ve ever seen in a film, ever. Gotta love this one. Just non-stop action and great story all throughout.

    Biollante is one of my favourite Kaiju's and I was kind of disappointed that she didn't get that much focus in the movie. Also the Super-X was much more effective in the previous movie than in this one, where one blast seems to be enough to damage it.

    In fact, Episode 34 of "The Return of Ultraman'' was the original story of Biollante. This is a story that was accepted in a story call when the original author was young. When Godzilla was revived in the Heisei era, a call for original works was held, and an original work that replaced the story of Ultraman with Godzilla was submitted and accepted. Okay, I will defent Bio Wars to death. The music piece itself in my opinion is one of the best in the whole franchise. Fast slapping highlights the pace of the scenes where it was used, it highlights the whole corporate espionage subplot very well and in the Osaka evacuation scene it starts right at the moment when the reprise from the original Akira Ifukube march begins, adding to the overall feeling of ominous and frantic situaton. Ifukube hated ths track, but I love it and I love how it was used in the film.
    The sound direction itself is really great with how it uses the musis, including the classic pieces. Scenes with Godzilla drawings and the military preparations when the reworked Frigate March from the Invasion of Astro-Monster starts playing still hype me up every time.

    My favorite Godzilla movie that also features another monster. I prefer Godzilla being the main threat/focus, but Biollante is interesting enough to share the spotlight, but never overshadows Godzilla which many of the monster (vs.) movies often do. The human characters, and themes are also well done, and the overall effects are on par with the previous movie, and are some of the best in the entire franchise. I agree about some of the voice actors being off putting, and the score while good not always seeming to fit tonally with what's happening on screen, other than that an overall solid Godzilla movie.

    This is the one I don't own because it's impossible to find unless I want to pay 60-120$ for what is likely a copy someone made on their PC.

    I liked Godzilla and Biolante. Very cool. Miki is pretty likeable. I liked the sound track a lot. Hearing all the variations of the regular Godzilla theme was cool. However, watching this subbed with the English speaking actors not subtitled made things difficult to understand. I had difficulty keeping track of all the characters although that assassin with the sun glasses was pretty cool and Goro Gondo’s death was cool. Because of how difficult this film was to follow for me, I just can’t say this one is my favorite. I would give it a 6/10.

    A very underrated film. The only downsides are the silly foreign actors and the monster fight scenes are maybe a little too short. Otherwise you are spot on. :)

    Hey Up, do you know of a Godzilla movie where he fights monster that came from a coocon, beats him and then keeps destroying the city? It had a female PM and had a final speech that I don´t quite remeber. I saw it when I was little.

    Wow! What an improvement over The Return Of Godzilla. And one of the best Heisei Godzilla films. The Godzilla design is the best it has ever been and the design is perfect for this series of Godzilla films. Biollante is also one of the most unique monsters in the entire franchise. The humans in this film are some of the most interesting in the entire franchise, the destruction scenes are fantastic and the plot is actually pretty interesting. The biggest problem though is that the final fight is way too short it is only 3 minutes long and that always bothers me. The first act is also kinda slow and the music has some tracks that feel outta place like Bio Wars (even though I love this track). Even with these problems though, Godzilla vs Biollante is definitely one of the best films in the Godzilla series. I will give it a 8.8/10.

    Of all the Kaijū films (along with the Heisei Gamera Trilogy) and amongst all the Godzilla films this one is my absolute favourite. I grew up with the dub (in my case german) and thus I didn't experience the terrible english actors in the japanese original, which probably was a blessing ;)

    This movie is criminally underrated because some Godzilla meathead fans wants repeated bullshit of some lizard running around instead of a MOVIE. This movie is a piece of art.

    Great effects. The rest - not so much to put it mildly especially the spy subplot and Biollante's role (or rather lack of any direction) before the last act. It's ok but it's not on level with Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla '93.

    • @danielhamilton351
      @danielhamilton351 4 года назад

      Funny, I disagree with almost everything you just said. The spy/espionage subplot actually makes sense in a modern geopolitical setting. Add in Godzilla, a cool enemy monster and great music and you have one of best entries in the franchise.
