-Space being that is technically a brother to the main character
-comes to earth to wreck havoc and happens to be relatively stronger than main character
-steals their son who will eventually take main character's place in the future
-main character joins forces with a character who is on a different moral side compared to them to stop villain
Isn't this just the plot to the beginning of the Saiyan saga?

Spacegodzilla is definitely a pretty different film. Instead of aliens trying to take over earth with a monster, its a sub-kaiju, reanimated in space, that's trying to take over the earth. Spacegodzilla looks a lot like Godzilla because well, its part Godzilla. And this film introduces the concept of kaijus having independent and mastermind intelligence, rather than just being animals or controlled by others. It also introduces a lot more drama and the relationships between kaijus that we haven't really seen for a long time (i think the last time we saw this was in "Son of Godzilla" and "all monsters attack". It makes the conflict between these 3 kaijus almost human-like, which is what I like about this concept.

  • @PatrickGalvan91
    @PatrickGalvan91 5 лет назад +82

Solid and very balanced review. The movie has a lot of really good things going for it, it's just unfortunately diminished by an unfocused script and a desperate need for tighter editing. Granted, I think pretty much all of the post-"King Ghidorah" Heisei movies need tighter pacing, but this one in particular feels more like a rough cut than a polished theatrical release. Interestingly enough, when I first saw this movie on the SyFy Channel as a kid, SyFy's editors whittled the film down by about 10-15 minutes and it actually helps the pace immensely. They cut the Birth Island scenes by about a third; they removed a lot of unnecessary filler moments like the scene with the two guys in the gaming room; they took out that horrible, *horrible* NASA scene that really should've been cut in the first place, etc. And the movie actually flows much better as a result.
I agree with all of the positives you mentioned. One more I would add is that the movie is much more visually appealing than the last three entries. It has a much richer color palette, more elaborate location settings, and a broader variety of camera tricks (racking focus, vertigo zooms, one-shot takes) that make it a little more fun to look at than some of the others from this time period.

I agree. I love this movie and thought that the effects were pretty good aside from a few brief scenes. Even if it doesn't have a very original plot that takes story forward in anyway, it was a fun entertaining godzilla movie with alot of godzilla action so I really enjoyed it.

I love when Space Godzilla arrives on earth and Godzilla comes to face him, the music in that scene and how the whole scene itself is shot was really kind of epic i thought. But i agree at this point most of the rest of the movie did feel quite flat.

This movie was the closest the Heisei series ever got to being a late-Showa era movie, and while some may see it as a detraction, I love it. It's got incredibly cool monster designs, callbacks, emotional moments, and the final battle is unique and interesting. It's legitimately entertaining and I love it for that.

This was my first Godzilla film and it has a special place in my heart. I understand that it has flaws but I feel that the positives outweigh the negatives. I will definitely take this over Godzilla vs Mothra which felt annoyingly preachy. Fun fact Mothra was actually supposed to have a larger role in the movie but Toho wanted it to have the same run time as the other hesei films so a lot of things were cut out. There are pieces of concept art for SpaceGodzilla that were way out there such as him being a quadruped like Baragon or being a Godzilla upper torso on 4 legs. They were not considered because they would be too difficult for suits to bring to life. The reason for the cheap effects is that Yamato Takeru bombed at the box office and Toho's budget for the next G film was cut in half. It may not be as objectively good as the previous film nor as good as the following film but this one is still a welcome addition to the Godzilla mythos.

I actually really like this one. Yeah, objectively it’s not great, but it feels like a really great middle ground movie. I mostly just enjoy this one for sheer entertainment value. SpaceGodzilla is actually one of my favorite Godzilla villains. He feels like a super powerful evil twin villain, and his insane amount of powers and abilities make him feel like a genuine threat. He completely outclasses Godzilla in terms of power, and Moguera and Godzilla have to strategize and work together to defeat him. Plus, the score for this one is pretty good, too. Though I know that this film isn’t very objectively good, I still love it a lot. Actually, a good way to look at this one is as the sort of “Godzilla vs Gigan” of the Heisei Series. Reaching the end of its run, but trying to go more by-the-book, and less innovative, but still has entertaining action to make up for it.
Also, Little Godzilla is the absolute cutest thing I have ever seen in a Godzilla film. Like, by a mile. HE’S JUST SO INNOCENT AND PRECIOUS AND-
Ok, gonna cut that off there before I get too oversaturated in cute stuff.

I will always enjoy this movie since it was one of the first godzilla films I saw. At the time, I wasn't looking for deep characters. I had just opened up my gateway into highly fictitious stories and the concept of godzilla was where my focus was drawn. in terms of concepts, Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla knocked it out of the park. I had been expecting something simple like you see in certain kids movies like "oh godzilla actually came from space" or some half thought out concept. Instead I was introduced to a concept of a highly regenerative and adaptable monster who's cells crystallized in space to survive. It introduced me to Biollante, to Moguera, and just the concept of Godzilla in such an incredible way that made me want to learn more. it didn't get everything right, but if it had been placed differently I think it would have done better. it's not a perfect film, but I still enjoy it purely for the concept, and I'd like to see it remade better in the future.

This movie is fun and I enjoy it. But it always bugged me that Mechagodzilla was the most effective weapon the military ever put against Godzilla. So they built MOGUERA as a replacement which makes sense, but then equipped MOGUERA with none of the weapons that Mechagodzilla used so effectively. In fact, they abandoned the strategy of going for Godzilla's secondary brain.
This time Godzilla's weakness was some previously unmentioned weak spot under his arm?

Ah yes I believe this was my first heisei Godzilla movie! My local block buster only had Showa and millennium movies for whatever reason and my parents managed to get me a dvd set for my tenth birthday. Yeah this one was admittedly goofy and did have a lot of plot points that went no where but I don’t think it really kills the movie at all, even Godzilla’s darkest movies were rather goofy and I actually find some of the human characters here some of the more memorable ones of the entire series due to how stereotypical they are. I always did love spacegodzillas design always loved his terraformed crystal city.

I made the mistake of this being the first Godzilla film I showed my nephew in its entirety, mainly cause I'd just purchased it and hadn't seen it yet. He knew who Godzilla was, seen multiple clips on youtube, and even has a plushy of him. When Godzilla's son got kidnapped my nephew lost it! He started crying and clutching his Godzilla plushy in absolute terror. When it appeared that Godzilla was down and out it got worse! The lesson: don't show small children that idolize the King of Monsters movies you haven't seen first! Note, he wasn't quite 2 yet.

I feel like this movie was like a throwback to the Showa era, where Godzilla was a hero figure (or anti hero). Perhaps that was why Junior Godzilla looked more like Minilla again (though not as ugly). Spacegodzilla is one of my favourite Kaiju's ever. That's why I have a soft spot for this movie. Still, 3 out of 5 stars seems like a fair verdict.

The two theories for why SpaceGodzilla exists were done pretty nicely in this film, but a theory I think would have been cool to add would have been that SpaceGodzilla was a mix of Godzilla's G-cells, which would have corrupted the soul or spirit of Battra. It would have given more reasoning for why the Shobujin/Cosmos were so invested in making sure that people knew about SpaceGodzilla, and honestly, Battra seems to have inspired some of SpaceGodzilla's look and attacks.

I wonder why it is that theres this vibe of storytellers in recent times trying to make spacegodzilla the arch enemy of Godzilla with video games and some comics

    • @DeamonMaim
      @DeamonMaim 5 лет назад +1

because, despite the lackluster debut film the concept of SpaceGodzilla is actually rather solid he's not a metal monstrosity that's physically more powerful than our beloved original, He uses telepathy and tactics (especially emotional torture) to compensate for his lack of physical power and movement. so there's alot more that can be done with his fights and quite frankly Space Godzilla deserve's to be treated as an arch rival he damn near kill's little Godzilla and while i agree that if they tried to have it be Mechagodzilla and Godzilla vs Space Godzilla, SG would just get bodied it says alot that Godzilla couldn't defeat him alone. So he deserve's another shot at the king.

This and Vs. Mothra are honestly my least favorite films of the Heisei era.

  • @derajnitram1882

The only film in the Heisei series I don't like, it shows that it's a script from the 70's and that phase of Godzilla, it's more silly in tone, and execution. If people prefer those earlier movies more then fine, but for this series which is for the most part is more credible overall this movie didn't fit well at all. Like most movies there are a few bright spots in this, but personally the good did not outweigh the bad. I'd give it one star It's the only blemish in an overall solid Heisei series.

This was one of my favorite movies space Godzilla was awesome in this movie it was kind of boring in certain elements in this movie I wish Godzilla was slimmer because he still look kind of fat and awkward in certain angles but still looks good space Godzilla I wish he was black and red and yellow it’s just like TheThe dark version of Mothra then he would’ve been a bad ass even more

This movie is a mixed bag just like Godzilla vs Gigan The good is I love SpaceGodzilla as a monster Godzilla looks great Little Godzilla looks really cute I actually really like the soundtrack in this movie and the fights are pretty good in this movie but the humans are bad the special effects are bad the tone is bad the pace is bad and I really dont like Mogera I like his design but he is supposed to be the upgrade from Mechagodzilla but he just gets his butt kicked so while not good it's also not bad and would rank it at number 22 on my list

I dunno, I gotta disagree this time. I was surprised how good it was considering all the hate it gets. I feel like it took everything from the last 2 films and did it better.

The movie was fun but forgettable. The best part was SpaceGodzilla and the new(and better designed) Moguera. I honestly forgot Little Godzilla was in the film by the end of the movie. Good fun but alright compared to the previous films. 6/10

How is junior bigger in SG movie than it is in the Destoroyah movie?
The quality of this movie was way below the rest of the era, and the SG concept was wasted because of it.

I'm afraid that this one marks my least favorite of any G-film. I enjoyed the beach scenes where Godzilla was emerging and Yuki fights him head on, but after that, we never got anything as visually interesting.

@1:34 Yes, watching them back to back, Space godzilla is just horrible compared to G V MG2! I want an explanation on why the pacing is so horrible! It must have been horrifically butchered from the script or something, every single attempt to have suspense is immediately resolved! All I can guess is that the yakuza plot maybe was supposed to be much bigger and got canned. All the non space godzilla stuff is just dropped plot points that go nowhere. "I have bullet to kill godzilla..." never comes back up, "Yakuza has control of Godzilla" for 5 seconds and no hint what they where even going to do. "mickey you have to save the earth" Micky doesn't do ****, "You did it micky you saved the earth" ???? "Yuki's GONE DAMN HIM...oh wait he's back". It's just so much nonsense it must have had serious problems to end up this way. And the music is really off.

I love the videos but I am beginning to see that you contradict yourself often in the very same review. You'll say how something in particular was just a regurgitated concept but then later during the same review say the very same thing is original. (just sayin). So you think the giant crystals sticking outa SPACE GZILLA are cool and most excellent? Wow!

No not Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla. The worst Godzilla movie of the heisei franchise, it's long, boring and illogical. I would however, still watch this movie over Godzilla's revenge. I give it a 3.8/10
