There are some mornings when I feel like a Gamera: Stumbling out of bed, extra wide body awkwardly waddling on two legs, . Googly eyes wide open and fixedly staring into infinity. Mouth full of big nasty teeth, a deathly breath, and fire coming out my rear. Yeah, Gamera is the real king.
Then you see your kids and remember why you wake up every day? Gamera feels that way about all children! 😀 He's kinda the ultimate parent.
Going from the campy Showa to the dark and gritty Heisei was on like going Schumacher's "Batman and Robin" to Nolan's "Batman Begins" or the "Dark Knight".
MST3K put it best: "Gamera. He did all the movies Godzilla turned down."
@GamebroTV fr the 90s gamera had straight up some of the best kaiju movies ever
Gojira 1954 steps in that movie is amazing even nowadays
That's saying alot, Godzilla did some crazy crap in his movies!
@@dendyxyz zzf
@GamebroTV Still seems like the same thing. Godzilla's Heisei era was more on crazy sci-fi with a reduced focus on the relations between people and the monster(s). Gamera's 90 trilogy ignores most sci-fi anything as just window dressing and is extremely focused on the relationship between the people and the monsters and how they build and crumble.
I cant believe toho turned down a crossover. They already did the crossover with king kong(an American monster), but they couldn't be bothered with a fellow Japanese studio monster that was also reasonably popular. King kong didn't yet have the follow up films after the original. The 70s, and '05 hadn't happened yet. They coulda crushed the box office with gamera and Godzilla teaming up. But it probably woulda been awkward with their different styles.
I’m happy we didn’t get Gamera because some random kid/ kenny would just yell and be annoying
I think it’s because toho saw gamers as a direct rival to godzilla
I heard somewhere that Toho turned it down because it would be a Vs. movie and Godzilla would be the loser.
@@diagonalscroll5 makes sence
King Kong was the direct inspiration for Gojira. Even his name is a combination of gorilla and whale. His film was made because of the love Japan (and the world) had for King Kong, but due to the lack of stop motion artists available, Tokusatsu itself was created.
The crossover of King Kong vs Gojira (notice who got top billing) happened during a time when King Kong was as popular as ever, and Gojira had a less successful sequel. The concept was drafted as King Kong vs a monster created by the son of Dr. Frankenstein, and only adapted to include Gojira because Toho picked up the story.
All of the King Kong “follow up films” you mentioned were actually reboots or remakes, not sequels. While King Kong had films like “The Son of Kong” and later with the help of Toho “King Kong escapes” King Kong’s original film was the main force of its popularity. Many other monsters and Kaiju relied on sequels and “monsters of the week” style features to remain popular. Further, many of Gojira’s films were crossovers. Rodman, Mothra, etc. were all solo films before they had a crossover with Gojira.
Mechani-Kong was even created before MechaGojira. King Kong was so popular, that Toho took the lead in developing sequels and crossovers for the beast. While eventually Gojira became a smash phenomenon in Japan, and later the world, Kong was top monkey for a long long time.
With Toho sitting on so many successful properties, they likely would rather not help their competition, especially since their own internal crossovers were doing so well.
Man do I want Gamera to make a resurgence
A... Godzilla resurgence?

Gamera being more of a “Defender of Humanity” than the more neutral Godzilla actually makes thematic sense. Turtles literally have a giant SHIELD on their back at all times.

As far as im concerned, the Heisei trilogy is required viewing for any kaiju fan worth their salt. There are very few entries even in the Godzilla series that can go toe to toe with those 3 films in terms of characters, storytelling, monster action, and special effects. They all still hold up, even in the age of big budget CGI films. I would love to see Legendary do a take on the fire breathing turtle, or....even better: bring him into the Monsterverse (though TOHO will probably still stubbornly refuse)
Godzilla vs Kong vs Gamera
Man if legendary did get the rights to gamera I can already see the next movie in my head. Godzilla Gamera Kong Defenders of Earth.
The Heisei trilogy is to kaiju movies what the Nolan Batman trilogy is to superhero movies
If only the Heisei trilogy wasn't so hard to find/watch/stream.
First ever movie i watched was Gamera vs. Guiron ever since then Gamera has always been my favorite kaiju.
Holy crap how do you remember the first movie you ever watched lol. I was younger than 2 when I first saw a movie.
I want to love gamera more, but my mother and I used to watch godzilla together. so the big nuclear threat has a special place in my heart.
It was my first Gamera movie too, though I saw it on a DVD that was packaged with another movie called Gappa.
@@kabourophobia5053 The first movie I remember seeing was very memorable. Mom took me with a friend to see Easy Rider when I was 2. The last scene - imagine seeing that in a theater at age 2. It's the only scene I remember. I don't think Mom could find a sitter.
The Shusuke Kaneko did such an amazing job with the Heisei Gamera trilogy, that Toho rehired him for GMK.
To me Gamera the Brave is the "Kid-friendly" Gamera FILM DONE RIGHT!!!!
Perfect timing, considering Gamera's recent birthday :)
It wasn’t until I watched this after the “every Godzilla” review(s) that I had realized I have seen every gamera and Godzilla movie...ever. I feel a really odd sense of satisfaction.
Gamera vs Legion is one of the best kaiju films ever. The whole Heisei trilogy is great, but that one really stands out for me. Great effects, an amazing antagonist and perfect pacing.

I actually really like the design of viras. He’s so goofy and derpy he seems almost like he was from the imagination of a small child. The kennys in it are totally grating, but they mix it up with surprising amounts of violence at times and I just find the whole thing charming
When I was a kid, I used to look every Saturday for Gamera movies on TV. He was my favorite monster.
If you think about it, Monsterverse Godzilla shares a lot of heisei Gamera's backstory
1) Godzilla from a force of nature suddenly protects human against other kaiju eventhough unintentionally but he doesn't destroy cities like he used to as in toho version
2) Shares an origin location in the form of sunken city where a lost civilisation once worshiped them
3) The victory against the MUTO is also a disaster for other survivors in KOTM just as it is in the Guardian of the universe victory turn into a disaster for survivors in Revenge of Iris
Is it a coincidence or a reference/ copy pasta?
Likely a coincidence

There's something you and I have in common. That is, in my scholarly opinion, we each own the VERY best RUclips channel in its genre. You deserve the highest praise for the quality of your uploads, especially your reviews of "Every Godzilla/Kong/Gamera Movie". Incidentally, when I say "scholarly", I mean just that as I hold a graduate degree in abstract math, as well as undergrad degrees in BOTH chemistry and physics.
I'm surprised at the low rating for Gamera vs Guiron. That was my favourite Gamera movie as a kid
Me too, mostly from mst3k
@@floydharper1216 I was into these films long before the Mystery Science Theatre. But I'm glad you like them
Here's the thing, I grew up on a healthy diet of Godzilla, my mom rented me my first Godzilla film when I was maybe six years old (Godzilla vs. Gigan), the first Godzilla movie I bought for myself was Destroy All Monsters because my uncle said it was insane seeing all those monsters at once (it totally was), the original Gojira is objectively one of the most influential films of all time, but pound for pound Gamera is my favorite monster of all time.
I would argue that Gamera's Heisei trilogy is better than the seven Heisei Godzilla films. Hell, I'd even venture to say the Gamera the Brave is better than Godzilla's Millenium series, but I'm open to discussion on that one.
Godzilla may be the king, but to me Gamera is the Dread Pirate Roberts.
@Latrell Lloyd you do realize godzilla is more overrated right? The gamera trilogy is the Christopher Nolan batman trilogy of kaiju films and that batman trilogy is called the best set of batman movies in existence. The gamera trilogy is a prime example of perfect kaiju filmmaking if you hate gamera why are you even here
@Latrell Lloyd he isn't dead if the 2015 short film was made as a literal representation of what a gamera reboot would be like
@Latrell Lloyd glad I'm not the only one
Excluding Godzilla vs Destoroyah, (which I’m basically a dick sucker for, because I love it and it’s masterful) I 100% agree. The Heisei Gamera films are extremely well made.
The Heisei Gamera trilogy is better then almost all Godzilla's Showa,Heisei,Millienium and Post- Millienium era movies.
I said almost since I love GVD,GXMG,Tokyo S.O.S and Gojira 1954 equally as much as I love the Heisei Gamera Trilogy.
For ’Gamera vs. Viras’, all I can remember is those blinking alien eyes, the small Viras and him just taking out those characters and the alien space ship.
I’m glad I bought the Shusuke Kaneko Trilogy films on Bluray, which I still need to watch.
This is amazingly comprehensive, thank you.
Growing up on Gamera and Godzilla films as a kid watching them in Japanese movie theaters in LA back in the late 20th century, your channel has brought back memories. holy hell, these shots from Gamera 2 and Gamera 3 from the 90s run looks insanely good. I watched the first one in this run and wasnt impressed much as someone stated that this was the best monster trilogy. And now getting to see the vibe of these next movies im impressed, should give it a go. Looks very nice for its limitations
Bless you bud I’d go for it. Funnily enough I was lucky enough to start with Revenge of Iris and amount of emotional weight in that movie is genuinely outstanding. Which means a lot as someone who hadn’t seen the first two.
While many argue whether or not Revenge was the best kaiju film, it's hard to deny that it is possibly the most beautifully filmed kaiju film ever.
As a lifelong fan of scfi & fantasy works: star trek, star wars, Godzilla, King Kong and others, The Gamera Trilogy is my gold standard. It is the only series that I've purchased on VCD, VHS, DVD, blu-ray & digital. Godzilla is my all time favorite, for I knew of him first, Gamera caught my attention as an adult while serving in the US Army in the late 90s. Imo, The Trilogy is the masterpiece of daikaiju art, and it's both baffling and disappointing that Kadokawa is sitting on this franchise. G T Brave wasn't on the level of these, but I still enjoyed it and it could've been a start of something new. Hopefully something is in the works.
Love the pfp man

I would love to see this guy in a new movie he deserves it without a doubt
Of all the things I've seen in kaiju movies, the sudden decapitation of Gyaos has caught me off guard more than anything.
Glad Gamera had a great stride with it's later entries. I only ever saw the 2nd and 3rd movie of the Showa series. Now, I want to see the Hesei series and the Brave.

Funny how both Godzilla and Gamera came into commission when the producers were flying over the ocean
I gotta say I didn't realize there were any pre-Heisei Gamera movies, and now I absolutely have to see them. They looked great
One thing I love about Gamera is that all of his movies are about the monsters. Whether Gamera or one of his rogues, it's all about the struggle trying to beat the villain.
「守護神」って響きからしてカッコいい。
Judging from the sound called the guardian deity, GAMERA is so cool.

The ending surprised the heck out of me when Gamera is trapped by a Rocket and sent into space. That was out of left field. I did not see that coming. Great movie. Gyaos was a formidable foe, it's laser was lethal. Frightening looking.

I didn't think the japanese version was that bad, I think the english dub makes the kid's voices squeakier on purpose or something.
But I didn't think Gamera 1965, Gamera vs barugon, Gamera vs gyaos, Gamera vs guiron, and Gamera vs jiger were that bad, sure they had a couple of really bad films in between, but they weren't as bad as the worst of the godzilla showa era series.
And the english dub also sometimes completely changes what the humans, and adults say making it a lot goofier, like in the english dub a guy is trying to get the kid on Gamera's back, but the kid is too far away, so he tells gamera to come closer because he can't reach. But in the japanese version, he sees gamera starting to move, so he tells the kid to get down.
It's small changes like that that make it a lot less goofy, as well as their voices and stuff, but I guess it is still preference.
@@GSTE_ Gamera super monster is 10x worse than even All monsters attack. thats saying something. Toho had higher budgets and therefore could create much better sets and suits. It's all in the budget. Showa Gamera just always focused on children more as main characters which is good for kids but makes them literally unwatchable to adults. If you love Gamera and haven't seen it on MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) *You need to read this!!!*
It's hard to believe any Gamera fan doesn't know about MST, but I'm posting this *just in case!*
I'm actually surprised MST3K wasn't at *least* briefly mentioned in this video! 😢. Being on MST really boosted Gamera's popularity!!!
If you look up anything about Gamera movies, it will always be mentioned that they were shown on MST and it made them much more famous. I actually never heard of Gamera before I saw it on that show, and I know millions of others can say the same thing.
If you *somehow* don't know, "Mst3k" is a show from the 90s where they are supposedly trapped in space and forced to watch B movies and provide comedic commentary (it's funnier than it sounds when I explain it). They do 4 or 5 episodes featuring Gamera movies AND there is a recent fan made MST3K by Branzant (youtube channel) where they do 2 more Gamera flicks and are working on a 3rd.
Pretty much every episode is available online for free. The best way to find them is to go to club-mst3k.com There they have links to every episode whether it's on youtube or any other website. Just type "Gamera" in the episode-search on the home page and it will bring up all results for Gamera movies.

Gamera is really neat. He is full of turtle meat.
Always amazes me that there is such a gulf between the landscape miniatures and the appalling monster suits in the showa gamera movies
the suits aren't that bad, especially Gamera's suit, which can go into his shell and spin around with actual fire, not CGI, coming out of each arm.
@@GSTE_ Well, I don't think anyone was using cgi in the 60s ;)
@@stephencampbell9384 yeah I know, but neither was godzilla, and when Godzilla was flying it looked really goofy, but Gamera's flying in the showa era looked really cool, because it was real.
And Gamera would get impaled a lot through his arms and legs, thus adding to the allusion that this is a real giant turtle, and the fact that he can shoot actual fire out of his mouth.
So I don't think there is really a gulf between the suits and the buildings, since both look pretty good to me, and not as bad as the worst of the showa godzilla suits.
@@GSTE_ Gamera always looked OK, its his opponents that look rough, especially compared to the landscapes theyre fighting in, which are superb
@@stephencampbell9384 I don't think his opponents look that bad, I liked Gyaos's design a lot, and the flapping of his wings, and his flying form was able to move a lot even though it was really stiff.
But at least the writers explained why his neck was stiff, and it was because he had two spines.
And Viras, even though the movie was horrible, the suit was pretty good, Barugon was pretty good, I'm not into it that much though, Guiron was really cool with him actually having a giant knife on his head, which was never really seen before and it looks cool, jiger was ok, and at worst, he looks bad, and looks like a guy in a suit and the suit doesn't even look that good, zigra looked really bad, and yeah that is about it, so I think the Gamera monster suits looked really cool, but what are your reasons why you don't like them.
Imagine Gamera assisted Godzilla in the fight against Destoroyah and revived Junior!
that wouldn't make that much sense, and Gamera would be dead before he got within a mile of Destroyah.
The only thing I disagree with is that I personally loved Gyaos’ googly eyes, they added a lot of silly charm for me that I appreciated
That's actualy cool and very fitting for gyaos, makes them more disturbing like q creature that is not suposed to exist, a mistake of mankind.
@@cupcaketf223 even though Gyaos is not suppost to be a man made create, and neither is gamera
@@GSTE_ I don't mind.
@@cupcaketf223 it's like if Godzilla was made by atlantis, and not the atomic bomb, at least Godzilla 1998 was made by the atomic bomb
@@GSTE_ For gamera it works, they're diferent characters, you know.
