King Kong was the direct inspiration for Gojira. Even his name is a combination of gorilla and whale. Rodman, Mothra, etc. were all solo films before they had a crossover with Gojira. Mechani-Kong was even created before MechaGojira. King Kong was so popular, that Toho took the lead in developing sequels and crossovers for the beast. While eventually Gojira became a smash phenomenon in Japan, and later the world, Kong was top monkey for a long long time. For a short time earlier this year, my family had to take care of a lost tortoise. Immediately, me and my mother decided to nickname it Toto for the period of its stay with us. Loved living with him.
Every friday technically saturday at 1:00 am. 1988 i use to watch gamera. If i fell asleep and missed it i would wake up Saturday morning crying. True story!
The ending surprised the heck out of me when Gamera is trapped by a Rocket and sent into space. That was out of left field. I did not see that coming. Great movie. Gyaos was a formidable foe, it's laser was lethal. Frightening looking.
One thing I love about Gamera is that all of his movies are about the monsters. Whether Gamera or one of his rogues, it's all about the struggle trying to beat the villain.
Glad Gamera had a great stride with it's later entries. I only ever saw the 2nd and 3rd movie of the Showa series. Now, I want to see the Hesei series and the Brave.
Here's the thing, I grew up on a healthy diet of Godzilla, my mom rented me my first Godzilla film when I was maybe six years old (Godzilla vs. Gigan), the first Godzilla movie I bought for myself was Destroy All Monsters because my uncle said it was insane seeing all those monsters at once (it totally was), the original Gojira is objectively one of the most influential films of all time, but pound for pound Gamera is my favorite monster of all time. I would argue that Gamera's Heisei trilogy is better than the seven Heisei Godzilla films. Hell, I'd even venture to say the Gamera the Brave is better than Godzilla's Millenium series, but I'm open to discussion on that one. Godzilla may be the king, but to me Gamera is the Dread Pirate Roberts.
@Latrell Lloyd you do realize godzilla is more overrated right? The gamera trilogy is the Christopher Nolan batman trilogy of kaiju films and that batman trilogy is called the best set of batman movies in existence. The gamera trilogy is a prime example of perfect kaiju filmmaking if you hate gamera why are you even here
Excluding Godzilla vs Destoroyah, (which I’m basically a dick sucker for, because I love it and it’s masterful) I 100% agree. The Heisei Gamera films are extremely well made.
The Heisei Gamera trilogy is better then almost all Godzilla's Showa,Heisei,Millienium and Post- Millienium era movies. I said almost since I love GVD,GXMG,Tokyo S.O.S and Gojira 1954 equally as much as I love the Heisei Gamera Trilogy.
The Gamera franchise going straight from Super Monster to the Heisei trilogy is like if Batman went straight from the Adam West tv show to the Christopher Nolan trilogy
This is where I would start from (44:22) The Heisei-Era is such an amazing era for Gamera. this is where really does the Godzilla's Heisei-Era around the same time. Better Action, better story, Better human characters and best of Fantastic Giant Monster Action for sure.
Might not appreciate the Gamera series as much as the Godzilla series, will give credit to some of the movies that came before and even the Gamera Trilogy in the 90's that really brought that turtle back from the grave. Good something, trying to watch Gamera Super Monster still remains one of my most painful Kaiju movies I ever had gull to try and sit through, lol. But props to you Depths, this is 110% quality work on each installment (so far) of the Gamera films, bravo!
As a kid when I put in the disc for Gamera 3 1999. I would rush to press the play button. Because the movies menu music and gameras deep roar scared me.
As a child I thought it was cool how Gamera flew around shooting out fire. Eventhough sometimes these movies came on, too late night for me too watch at times cause of school.
Only seen Gamera the Brave and I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind a sequel to show how Gamera aged a bit more. He looks the human equivalent of 16. So still pretty cutesy compared to his Elder at the beginning who was prolly the human equivalent of 80. I also thought the kids had more balls then the adults. And the Godzilla/Gamera crossover to do battle against a new foe would be cool.
As a lifelong fan of scfi & fantasy works: star trek, star wars, Godzilla, King Kong and others, The Gamera Trilogy is my gold standard. It is the only series that I've purchased on VCD, VHS, DVD, blu-ray & digital. Godzilla is my all time favorite, for I knew of him first, Gamera caught my attention as an adult while serving in the US Army in the late 90s. Imo, The Trilogy is the masterpiece of daikaiju art, and it's both baffling and disappointing that Kadokawa is sitting on this franchise. G T Brave wasn't on the level of these, but I still enjoyed it and it could've been a start of something new. Hopefully something is in the works.
I am big Gamera Fan! I have been a fan of Gamera for many years! Gamera is known as the Defender of Children. So you really need to see if from a child's point of view. All of the Gamera Movies that I watched when I was younger, I greatly enjoyed!
@@stephencampbell9384 yeah I know, but neither was godzilla, and when Godzilla was flying it looked really goofy, but Gamera's flying in the showa era looked really cool, because it was real. And Gamera would get impaled a lot through his arms and legs, thus adding to the allusion that this is a real giant turtle, and the fact that he can shoot actual fire out of his mouth. So I don't think there is really a gulf between the suits and the buildings, since both look pretty good to me, and not as bad as the worst of the showa godzilla suits.
@@stephencampbell9384 I don't think his opponents look that bad, I liked Gyaos's design a lot, and the flapping of his wings, and his flying form was able to move a lot even though it was really stiff. But at least the writers explained why his neck was stiff, and it was because he had two spines. And Viras, even though the movie was horrible, the suit was pretty good, Barugon was pretty good, I'm not into it that much though, Guiron was really cool with him actually having a giant knife on his head, which was never really seen before and it looks cool, jiger was ok, and at worst, he looks bad, and looks like a guy in a suit and the suit doesn't even look that good, zigra looked really bad, and yeah that is about it, so I think the Gamera monster suits looked really cool, but what are your reasons why you don't like them.
Great job, I watched the entire video, they say that a classic monster is supposed to make an appearance in Godzilla vs Kong and I hope it's Gamera but I don't know how they would make that happen.
I'm a huge Gamera fan. This was a great video. My favorite is Gamera Vs Guiron. I enjoy the kooky battle with the awesome sword headed Guiron. I just watched "Gamera the Brave" for the first time. I didn't know it existed somehow! *SPOILER ALERT* It was a great movie. Better than the previous trilogy i.m.o.. EXCEPT The monster fighting scenes were very short and relatively uneventful. I was let down by how little actual fighting there was. Basically Toto gets his butt kicked then fights back a little then does one blast and it's over.....
The fact that when it comes to ratings, audience and critic, the Heisei Gamera trilogy has all 3 films in the top 10 says everything you need to know on how great the movies were. I grew up watching the bad dubs of old Gamera but it remained my favorite kaiju over Godzilla (being an ignorant kid of course with no understanding of the original versions of either franchise). Discovering the trilogy vindicated those of us who stood behind the character.
If you love Gamera and haven't seen it on MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) *You need to read this!!!* It's hard to believe any Gamera fan doesn't know about MST, but I'm posting this *just in case!* I'm actually surprised MST3K wasn't at *least* briefly mentioned in this video! 😢. Being on MST really boosted Gamera's popularity!!! If you look up anything about Gamera movies, it will always be mentioned that they were shown on MST and it made them much more famous. I actually never heard of Gamera before I saw it on that show, and I know millions of others can say the same thing. If you *somehow* don't know, "Mst3k" is a show from the 90s where they are supposedly trapped in space and forced to watch B movies and provide comedic commentary (it's funnier than it sounds when I explain it). They do 4 or 5 episodes featuring Gamera movies AND there is a recent fan made MST3K by Branzant (youtube channel) where they do 2 more Gamera flicks and are working on a 3rd. Pretty much every episode is available online for free. The best way to find them is to go to club-mst3k.com There they have links to every episode whether it's on youtube or any other website. Just type "Gamera" in the episode-search on the home page and it will bring up all results for Gamera movies. I'm sure most of you Gamera fans are already aware. BUT.......*I just KNOW*.... ....There is gonna be at least one kindred spirit out there who is gonna read this comment all the way through and it will *CHANGE ...their.... LIVES* !!! To that lucky individual, I say *Welcome!!* Welcome to the next chapter of your *life!!!!* Buckle up. It's about to get *AWESOME!!!!!* ( ...lol. I should be in advettising!!! )
I love Gamera. But needs an upgrade like hidden spike on shell or flying shards from tail. The ability to spin like a pinball. It can be done with CGI technology.

I’m not a huge Gamera fan, but I still wanna check out the Heisei Gamera trilogy!
Yeah you should. I would even say they are better than every Godzilla movie except the Original.
Heisei gamera is the only good gamera everything else is meh

Hell yeah time for the big turtle
OMG i was waiting for this!!!!
While many argue whether or not Revenge was the best kaiju film, it's hard to deny that it is possibly the most beautifully filmed kaiju film ever.
Of all the things I've seen in kaiju movies, the sudden decapitation of Gyaos has caught me off guard more than anything.
I would love to see this guy in a new movie he deserves it without a doubt
This compilation is wonderful.
One thing I love about Gamera is that all of his movies are about the monsters. Whether Gamera or one of his rogues, it's all about the struggle trying to beat the villain.
20:26 "oH oH jIM JiM JIm oH jIM oH JIM jIM" 💀💀
The gamera trilogy is a prime example of perfect kaiju filmmaking if you hate gamera why are you even here
@Latrell Lloyd he isn't dead if the 2015 short film was made as a literal representation of what a gamera reboot would be like
@Latrell Lloyd glad I'm not the only one
The contrast between Super Monster and the Heisi trilogy tho
the contrast between Godzilla's revenge and Godzilla vs destroyah tho
Funny how both Godzilla and Gamera came into commission when the producers were flying over the ocean
「守護神」って響きからしてカッコいい。
Judging from the sound called the guardian deity, GAMERA is so cool.
What?
This is where I would start from (44:22) The Heisei-Era is such an amazing era for Gamera. this is where really does the Godzilla's Heisei-Era around the same time. Better Action, better story, Better human characters and best of Fantastic Giant Monster Action for sure.
I gotta say I didn't realize there were any pre-Heisei Gamera movies, and now I absolutely have to see them. They looked great
Might not appreciate the Gamera series as much as the Godzilla series, will give credit to some of the movies that came before and even the Gamera Trilogy in the 90's that really brought that turtle back from the grave. Good something, trying to watch Gamera Super Monster still remains one of my most painful Kaiju movies I ever had gull to try and sit through, lol. But props to you Depths, this is 110% quality work on each installment (so far) of the Gamera films, bravo!

We need a movie with Godzilla, Kong, and Gamera
imagine all 3 taking on King Ghidorah or Destroyah
As a kid when I put in the disc for Gamera 3 1999. I would rush to press the play button. Because the movies menu music and gameras deep roar scared me.
I feel the big white eyes on Gyaos are actually really good. Reminds me of Shin Gojira
As a kid I remember watch gamera vs jiger and gamera vs that knife thing a LOT
Gamera is finally coming back!
Great video. Love Gamera and Godzilla
I think Gamera was blown to peaces in his first appearance , just as Godzilla was dissolved to bone in his first appearance
As a child I thought it was cool how Gamera flew around shooting out fire. Eventhough sometimes these movies came on, too late night for me too watch at times cause of school.
I love most of the gamera films, I especially love the 90s ones, except for gamera the brave
8:00 when u bring on someone named Gojira into a gamera film
Love the pfp man

I am big Gamera Fan! I have been a fan of Gamera for many years! Gamera is known as the Defender of Children. So you really need to see if from a child's point of view. All of the Gamera Movies that I watched when I was younger, I greatly enjoyed!
Always amazes me that there is such a gulf between the landscape miniatures and the appalling monster suits in the showa gamera movies
the suits aren't that bad, especially Gamera's suit, which can go into his shell and spin around with actual fire, not CGI, coming out of each arm.
@@GSTE_ Well, I don't think anyone was using cgi in the 60s ;)
@@stephencampbell9384 yeah I know, but neither was godzilla, and when Godzilla was flying it looked really goofy, but Gamera's flying in the showa era looked really cool, because it was real.
And Gamera would get impaled a lot through his arms and legs, thus adding to the allusion that this is a real giant turtle, and the fact that he can shoot actual fire out of his mouth.
So I don't think there is really a gulf between the suits and the buildings, since both look pretty good to me, and not as bad as the worst of the showa godzilla suits.
@@GSTE_ Gamera always looked OK, its his opponents that look rough, especially compared to the landscapes theyre fighting in, which are superb

It's not gamera, the trailer for the movie already revealed the classic monster

I'm a huge Gamera fan. This was a great video.
My favorite is Gamera Vs Guiron. I enjoy the kooky battle with the awesome sword headed Guiron.
I just watched "Gamera the Brave" for the first time. I didn't know it existed somehow! *SPOILER ALERT*
It was a great movie. Better than the previous trilogy i.m.o.. EXCEPT
The monster fighting scenes were very short and relatively uneventful.
GREAT REVEIW
I had good taste when I was a kid, gamera guardian of the universe was theone I watched that I got hooked on.
GAMERA friggin rocks!!!!!
How about Godzilla and Gamera against Destroyah and Gigan in monster verse 2022????
That's something i would spend all the money in the world to watch.
If you love Gamera and haven't seen it on MST3K (Mystery Science Theater 3000) *You need to read this!!!*
It's hard to believe any Gamera fan doesn't know about MST, but I'm posting this *just in case!*
I'm actually surprised MST3K wasn't at *least* briefly mentioned in this video!
It's about to get *AWESOME!!!!!*
( ...lol. I should be in advettising!!! )
It was….ok
THANKS FOR CIRCULATING THE MESSAGE MY FELLOW MSTIE
Imagine Gamera assisted Godzilla in the fight against Destoroyah and revived Junior!
that wouldn't make that much sense, and Gamera would be dead before he got within a mile of Destroyah.
As a Godzilla fan since childhood, I love Gamera more ❤
I love Gamera. But needs an upgrade like hidden spike on shell or flying shards from tail. The ability to spin like a pinball. It can be done with CGI technology.
He already spins like a pinball
