I grew up with the American dub like most people in the west, and I agree that the edits it makes are, generally, for the benefit of the movie. It's also one of the better dubs in the entire franchise, but ever since being able to watch the original Japanese cut I prefer to watch that over the dub. Maybe it's just me, but I prefer to be able to watch the original intended version of a movie if possible.

I'm very happy that I got to see this film in theaters years ago as a child. I am a big Godzilla fan, and this was the first Japanese Godzilla film to watch in theaters. 2nd and 3rd were Shin Godzilla of 2016, and recently one of the millennium films that was never released outside of Japan for Godzilla's 68th birthday this year, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002).
Kind of aggravating that the American executives just laughed at it. This is a long running problem with Godzilla. America just sees Godzilla as a schlocky giant monster movie series with no value whatsoever. Idk, maybe I’m just upset cause I grew up with the series, but it’s always frustrated me.
They laughed at the English dubbing, which was done largely by amateur's and random volunteers. In fact, the company that did the dubs, Omni Productions, is well known for providing shitty English dubs to a variety of things.
I remember watching the Japanese cut once years ago and thinking that it’s weird and inferior to the American cut. That being said i still wanna get the Japanese cut to give it another try.
When I first saw this movie, I thought it was picking up where they left off after Godzilla vs Destroyer. But yes, if this was actually supposed to be a reboot, it should have been an updated version of 1954 Godzilla suit but keep the updated fire breath
Oh wow… you just reminded me of the adventures of Billy, Wally, Sparkle, and the gang cruising around on Spaceship Bruce… good times! 😄 Omni really was unbelievably bad 😆
Nice video explaining the differences. I personally liked the Japanese cut better. I understand the reasoning for the pacing of the movie but I found the English dub to be disrespectful. The dialogue was annoying, campy and I remember no one in theaters took it seriously. Try being a hardcore G-fan at the time and the audience laughing at a movie you were so pumped to see. 😢
NGL the one thing I wish was kept in the American version were the references to the Millennium alien. I mean they are the main antagonist of the film. It would be helpful to have all info about them kept intact
Just got done watching the video. Great work as always. I didn't know the US version had 'Earth vs. The Flying Sauces' playing on the TV. Loved that movie. Then again, it's been years since I've seen the US version.
I might be in the minority, but I enjoyed the Japanese version far more, even though the English version was my first Godzilla movie and I have so much nostalgia for it.
I really really liked the scene of the computers turning on, vaguely threatening humanity. And I prefer some parts of the movie without music tbh, it's a shame so much was cut in the American version there were some really nice scenes that add to it and make the human side more interesting
This one of the rare times where, in my opinion, the American version is better. The Japanese version, though also great, had some odd scenes, no music parts, and Godzilla’s soft roar got annoying. But Godzilla 2000 is my personal favorite G film.
I'm sorry if I'm sounding like a smartass, not my intention at all, but there's one more difference you forgot to mention. While you pointed out that Orga's roars were different in the American version, so are Godzilla's... Well not exactly, he still uses his original roars as heard in the original Japanese cut, but sometimes there are moments where you can hear the G98 roar, like that one scene where the UFO is flying past Godzilla.
Godzilla 2000 really should have just used a remade 1954 Godzilla suit since literally the movie is about the original Godzilla. Edit: I confused MireGoji and GiraGoji together.
I saw this during its theatrical release in the states. I was 34 at the time. The rest of my family, not being Godzilla fans, fell asleep. I liked the movie and have seen both versions. I prefer the subtitled Japanese release.
I will say it was the first real Godzilla movie I was able to see in the theater. My dad and I went together. Yeah, I was a bit older this time, but we both looked at it as a rite of passage. It was something he always promised me he would do when I was younger if a new Godzilla movie ever came out. Sure, we went to the 98 Godzilla together, but that was a huge fiasco and I also brought along a large group of friends. We had fun, but it didn't feel like a real Godzilla movie. This one did, but I will say being in the audience, it was a little disappointing. It was mostly young children. Like I felt like I was going to see a children's movie after a while. Normally I wouldn't care. I just thought that maybe at that time there were still people my age that love godzilla. Like people who are 15 or 16 or 17 years old. Now, none of that matters to me. If it's godzilla, I have a lot of fun watching it, no matter who with, or where I am. I will say that for its time, it was pretty good in regards to special effects. Sure. It didn't hold the candle to modern Hollywood effects, but for being a suit nation production, and blending the effects with cgi, it definitely held its own for its time
Neat. I missed this one in the movies, but my two brothers took me to see Godzilla 1985! That was the first new movie I saw in the theatres (my small town would show old sci-fi movies (including Godzilla and Gamera from the Showa era) on weekends when I was a kid in the early 80s)

Yeah, I always preferred the US version of Orga's roar. The Japanese Orga sounds like a cute, wonky little mouse with laryngitis. American Orga sounds like a real monster. It's all throaty, and scratchy, and mean and gross. It was great!
that "The End?" title card (or would it be "The?End" with how it's laid out) looks so hilariously cheap, like something you'd see on a TV sitcom where the characters are watching a sci-fi movie.
Just saw 2000 for the first time in several years at the Fathom Event showing and I was taken off-guard by a lot of stuff I didn't remember. In particular, I thought the scenes of the text floating along the screens was actually really well done and eerie. I think they also did a better job of explaining what the alien actually was. However, I definitely agree that it could've used some editing down. I also missed the sound effect they used for the UFO in the American version. It just tickles my brain.
2:27 In addition to all their "Godziller" dubs, Omni Productions also made the infamously terrible English language dubs of some Japanese Transformers cartoons that were made after the US cartoon had ended: Transformers: The Headmasters, Transformers: Masterforce, and Transformers: Victory. I wish that there were a version with the American cut (and the footage being much more clear/cleaned up looking) but with the original Japanese actor performances. I typically stick with the Japanese cut simply because I have a distaste for dubbed versions of...anything, really, so having a "best of both" edit would be very welcome. Interesting comparison, this was changed at least as much as Return of Godzilla/Godzilla 1985.
yeah not @all surprised by any of this information due to the fact the exact thing happened w/GojiLa Returns aka Godzilla 1985(The Better Version).. you should probably do a vid about the differences between those two movies..
16:27 Same thing happend with the atomic breath sound, in japanese version the charge up sounds like a barbecue and the usa version sounds like a microwave or in sometimes an oven.
I want to see someone make a mashup version of the English dub and the Japanese version of the scenes that's were cut into a Frankenstein amalgamation to make it feel like a complete feature and posted on the internet archive. Well I'm not going to do it. I choose life. Let someone else do it for example, someone else actually mash some Japanese footage for some episodes of the original ultraman English dub
For some reason, almost no people talk about the difference between Godzilla's Atomic Breath sound in the 2 version. The Japanese sounds like Heisei Burning Godzilla which is way better, while the American one sounds like fire or sth else.
Still my favorite Godzilla movie of all time and in case anyone is wondering, I’m talking about the American version! This was the first movie I ever saw and I saw it when it first came out in 1999 in theaters. I was 2 years old at the time!
In the Japanese release, it lingers on a few shots of Godzilla where it clearly shows wires making the tail flop around, so I can understand some of the cut down scenes.
@@queenglamazona8789 if you watch Chainsawman, you know there are times and places to do that, but it depends on the context, also the soundtrack might help but here it just buried the corpse of the visuals
One weird detail about Godzilla 2000.. theres a scene where a monitor, or a bunch of monitors.. are scrolling through a text document... data supposedly. But when you look closer at it.. it turns out it's actually a read me file, or dat file, for an early build of the MAME arcade emulator.. and you can clearly see it listing off the games it supports. I wonder if that was added for the American version or if that was in the original as well
I was 7/8 in the late 90's. It was amazing seeing Godzilla 98' in theater, then the next year seeing Godzilla 2000 in theater. My young kid mind thought 2000 was a continuation of 98', in that the baby that survived grew up into a normal Godzilla...hahaha. Good times.
Excellent presentation, editing and research as with all your videos! Recently discovered you and I'm binging all your work. Please keep it up! So that's why he's called Orga, interesting. Had no idea.
I think generally, the Japanese cut of most Godzilla films is the overall stronger version. In some cases, you kind of get an either-or scenario where both cuts have strengths and weaknesses. Godzilla 2000 is an example where I unabashedly, 100% prefer the US version as a clear improvement over the Japanese cut and consider the US version to be the definitive edit of the film.
@@dragozillasaur813 Honestly, those roars are perfectly good variations and versions of a Godzilla roar. There have been many over the years. The 98 film has a ton of problems but the roars were far from a major one. Plus I dig on the fun little head-canon theory that G2K could be the hatchling from the end of G98 grown up and mutated into a more traditional Godzilla...and the roars carrying over kinda serves as a tether between the two.
@@dragozillasaur813 Fair enough, a few G98 roars alone isn't enough to sway me away from the better pacing, better sound design, additional and improved musical cues, and overall charm of the dub.
Ya know, a part of me wonders if Toho would've made a Godzilla film even if the Tristar film was more positively received. Like they'd try to make bank after it's success kinda like what happened with the 2014 Godzilla film leading to the creation of Shin Godzilla. What would that film be like? Would we still have Godzilla: 2000 or something else?
Honestly, I Really Don't Like Zilla's Vocals used for MireGoji in the US Cut 'cause It Just Didn't fit him at all, MireGoji Had a Better Vocal Performance in the Japanese Cut than in the US.
I would suggest you review the young adult and children's Godzilla books from the late '90s. I still have mine, and I periodically pull them out and re-read them-they are SO fun! (But they are kind of rare-I hope you can get access to them)
I feel like the japanese version does a better job conveying the Millenians motivation. The american version makes it seem like they're hostile twoards humans for no reason.
Great video, as always! By the way, I mostly go through your "Godzilla Videos" playlist for videos, and I was very surprised to see this video wasn't on that list. You have many other Godzilla videos not on that list too, like Part 2 - 4 of your Marvel Godzilla videos. You should update that playlist when you have a chance; I don't want to miss anything! Stay awesome!
Thanks, it's interesting to get a breakdown of the differences. I bought a VCD of Millennium in 2000 and enjoyed it many times. Unfortunately the US version I'd seen only maybe 10-15 minutes of because I found the dialog and voice performances grating in comparison. I can appreciate that the US version seems to be a tighter edit and have a brighter picture. But I like the few lingering shots and background details of the Japanese edit, it has more room to breathe.
I totally get the differences especially watching the godzilla animated series and the USA version from the 1998 film of Godzilla. I just think overall, if anything, the meaning/differences of the Godzilla SHOULD be kept as simple as possible if we are to cater for the general audiences level. Sure, we can split the differences and meanings to it, but would it complicate the situations more at the general audiences level is all we should ask to ourselves all and all.

Millenniun’s japanese roar: that’s the most creepiest roar ever😨 16:27
Millenniun’s American roar: it’s just lame😒 16:32
yeah not @all surprised by any of this information due to the fact the exact thing happened w/GojiLa Returns aka Godzilla 1985(The Better Version).. you should probably do a vid about the differences between those two movies..
"Great Caesars GHOAAST!!"
Just found this channel today. And from the couple of videos I have seen on this channel I am now subscribed.
Thank you!
The Omni dub is allegedly very bad, I've heard people say it sounded like Asians trying to a Wisconsin accent.
16:27 Same thing happend with the atomic breath sound, in japanese version the charge up sounds like a barbecue and the usa version sounds like a microwave or in sometimes an oven.
What is with Toho films having a green tint and muddy blacks? They just stink at doing transfers don't they?
Why didn’t they change Orga to Rege in the US dub?
Still my favorite Godzilla movie of all time and in case anyone is wondering, I’m talking about the American version! This was the first movie I ever saw and I saw it when it first came out in 1999 in theaters. I was 2 years old at the time!
Fun fact: in the trailer of the American version of the film it has a song by rob zombie called superbeast
I really like the American versions but I just don't understand why they cut down some scenes of Godzilla.
In the Japanese release, it lingers on a few shots of Godzilla where it clearly shows wires making the tail flop around, so I can understand some of the cut down scenes.
@@Tattletale-Delta that's fair though I still find it odd that they removed the scene of his dorsal plates glowing.
Those godzilla yootuuz are awesome!
Maybe I’m losing my shit but why do I remember Rob zombie’s Super beast playing at the end of the American version in the movie theater
That song was featured in the American trailer for Godzilla 2000.
Why the hell would anyone want to watch the US version, they cut everything out.
Really wish they kept the scene of the UFO telling humanity what it wants in the American version. It’s a creepy scene with no dialogue.
Basically the japaneese version has a more boring soundtrack, i couldnt even finish the movie
Didn't like all those Scenes of the Characters doing Household Chores and Storing All Their Video Equipment?
@@queenglamazona8789 if you watch Chainsawman, you know there are times and places to do that, but it depends on the context, also the soundtrack might help but here it just buried the corpse of the visuals
I like this movie a lot, the dark atmosphere, Goji design and Orga are awesome.
I wonder if that was added for the American version or if that was in the original as well
Anyome else just got done coming from the godzilla 2000 theater event and noticed so many differences that they didnt noticed before?
Is this a coincidence but the video time length is good "19:54"
I usually prefer the original Japanese cuts of these movies but this is the rare case in which I prefer the U.S. cut because I find the pacing better.
Good times.
honestly this has to be one of the best Godzilla movie with the best cinematography
You forgot to mention Godzilla’s roars using zilla roars
This is something i didn't like in the american cut, One of the reasons I Prefer the Japanese cut
I wish we could get a cut with the original Japanese dub with the American editing and audio. That would probably be the best version for me.
I remember being a kid watching this in theaters if only I still had the ticket😢.
The only Godzilla I prefer the American version for its sound effects and different music scores
Excellent presentation, editing and research as with all your videos! Recently discovered you and I'm binging all your work. Please keep it up!
So that's why he's called Orga, interesting. Had no idea.
I hope you realize you now have to do this with every Godzilla movie. Not kidding lol.
The American Version is so Awful that TriStar Should watch South Park
Remember when they turned Barbara Streisand into Mecha-Godzilla ?
@@queenglamazona8789 Scott Tenorman is Mechagodzilla in My South Park x Godzilla Crossover Universe.
ok I did not know that at all 18:00
I think generally, the Japanese cut of most Godzilla films is the overall stronger version. In some cases, you kind of get an either-or scenario where both cuts have strengths and weaknesses. Godzilla 2000 is an example where I unabashedly, 100% prefer the US version as a clear improvement over the Japanese cut and consider the US version to be the definitive edit of the film.
Well I don't like g98 sounds for miregoji
@@dragozillasaur813 Honestly, those roars are perfectly good variations and versions of a Godzilla roar. There have been many over the years. The 98 film has a ton of problems but the roars were far from a major one.
Plus I dig on the fun little head-canon theory that G2K could be the hatchling from the end of G98 grown up and mutated into a more traditional Godzilla...and the roars carrying over kinda serves as a tether between the two.
@@creategreatness8823 nah I prefer his vocals in the Japanese cut
@@dragozillasaur813 Fair enough, a few G98 roars alone isn't enough to sway me away from the better pacing, better sound design, additional and improved musical cues, and overall charm of the dub.
@@creategreatness8823 whatever I still love Gkotm and Ksi
I love Robinson's head poking up whenever you mentioned his name, it made me chuckle
No-one, not a single soul. The Aliens: hEy LeTs MeGaMoRpH iNtO a KaIjU aNd AtTeMpT tO sWaLlOw ThE rAdIoAcTiVe HeAt MoNsTeR!
I love this movie
Because you reviewed dawn of the monsters can you make a review for gigabash because that game is has a Godzilla D.L.C coming soon.🦖🗼🏯🤩
Good video! Very good Godzilla film.
The American cut was better than the Japanese in my opinion.
Keep up the great work 👍
I would suggest you review the young adult and children's Godzilla books from the late '90s. I still have mine, and I periodically pull them out and re-read them-they are SO fun! (But they are kind of rare-I hope you can get access to them)
Fastest click of the west
Fastest click of the north
I feel like the japanese version does a better job conveying the Millenians motivation. The american version makes it seem like they're hostile twoards humans for no reason.
Drink every time you hear "Scene of Godzilla cut".
Though thats what we really want from a Godzilla movie, less scenes of Godzilla.
But I like the few lingering shots and background details of the Japanese edit, it has more room to breathe.
also... both versions of G2k was pure HOT Garbage so superior editing couldn't save that film like it did 15yrs earlier...
you forgot that in the american version the ufo has sounds when its flying around and the japanese version doesnt
Why was the Dubbing So Bad in the American Cut of Godzilla 2000 ?
"Great Ceaser's Ghost !!!"
Japan version >> American version, my opinion
same here
I totally get the differences especially watching the godzilla animated series and the USA version from the 1998 film of Godzilla.
Thank you for this video
