Armenian genocide: survivors recall events 100 years on

- In 1915 a million people were brought through what is now Turkey and walked to their deaths near Deir-al-Zour in modern Syria. One hundred years on, only a handful of survivors remain to tell the stories of the Armenian genocide, which they witnessed.
by Diana Markosian
A hundred years after the Armenian genocide, filmmaker Diana Markosian found two survivors who witnessed deportation, death, and denial of the events of 1915. Together they journeyed back to the past.
I was never interested in pursuing work on the Armenian genocide. When I started this project, it was still just a vague historical narrative. I knew that, in 1915, the Ottomans initiated a policy of deportation and mass murder to destroy their Armenian population. And that, by the First World War’s end, more than a million people were eliminated from what is now modern-day Turkey. But I had no idea of the personal toll the genocide exacted on my own family, or the sense of connection I would slowly come to feel through making this piece.
I am Armenian, but I was born in Moscow and raised in America. For most of my life, I struggled with my Armenian identity, partly because of the history one inherits. It is something I understood but never fully embraced. Then a year ago, I happened to be in Armenia when a foundation approached me, requesting help in finding the remaining genocide survivors. I pursued voter registrations online to see who was born before 1915, and then traveled cross-country to find them. That’s how I met Movses and Yepraksia - who lived past their hundredth year.
When I met them, they shared with me memories of their early homes. Movses was born in the village of Kebusie in Musa Dagh Mountain not far from the Syrian border. Yepraksia lived in a small village near Kars on the Armenian border. They hadn’t seen their home since escaping a century ago. I wanted in some way reunite each of the survivors with their homeland. I decided to travel back Turkey to re-trace their last memories.
When I told the survivors I would be visiting their native land, each one asked me to fulfill a wish. Movses, from Musa Dagh, drew a map of his village, and asked me to find his church and leave his portrait on the footsteps of what are now ruins. He hadn’t seen his home in 98 years. In his village, I found everything he had described to me: the sheep, the fruit he remembered eating, and the sea. I even found the ruins of what was once his church. Yepraksia, from a small village in Kars, asked me to help her find her older brother who she separated from after 1915.
Once I returned to Armenia, I created billboard-sized images of the survivors’ homelands as a way of bridging the past and present. All these years later, upon delivering the image, the survivors grabbed on, as if by holding the image close they would be taken back to a place they called home many years ago. This is a story of home - everything they had, everything they lost. And what they have found again.

wow a man 105 and woman 110 and they are still clear and can tell eye-witness accounts. May God remember the Armenians.
they probably were form 6-12 years old those days, of course they would remember, its a miracle they survived
92Iowa Country Turkey is the one who is reforming and forming stories my firend, it is not that strange, there are many refugees here in Armenia and around the world who were telling those sstories for around decades, not only Armrenians but other nations as well, you even may find many Kurdish families that bare the stories, the fact that there was a Genocide has been proved long ago, the recognition still remains matter of politics
my friend, 92 Iowa Country, I have read published accounts from 1915 and thereabouts, written by Americans about the genocide of Armenians.

Have you ever heard of the Khojaly Armenian Massacre of Turks 27 years ago? In 1992, Armenian forces closed the entrance and exit of Khojaly town between February 25th and February 26th. A total of 613 Azerbaijani people, 83 children, 106 and over 70 years of age, were brutally killed and 487 seriously injured.
Eight families were extinct, 487 were disabled and 1275 were taken captive. A total of 150 people, 68 women and 28 children, are still unknown.
Daud Kheriyan, an Armenian journalist living in the brutality of the Khojaly Massacre, tells the story of what happened that day: The Armenian group responsible for the burning of the Armenian funeral brought 100 Azerbaijani deaths to a kiln called Gaflan on March 2; I saw a 10-year-old girl in the last truck. Head and hand were injured. His face was bruised. Despite cold, hunger and wounds, he was still alive. He couldn't breathe. His eyes were filled with fear of death. Then a soldier named Tigranyan caught him and threw him to the other bodies. then they burned all the objects. I felt like I heard a scream among burning objects. There was nothing I could do ”
@x Whoa: bitterness much? She seems very clear-minded to me. She was there: she knows what happened.

Turks are not the only culprits of the events. Lourmpakis Konstantinos you just proved my point. first of all greek, those armenians were killed because of their political ideology, “the greater armenia”
Surprisingly, in the UN definition of “genocide”, it says mass killing of peoples bc of their ethnicity and religion. it doesn’t say bc of political ideas so it is not even a genocide. if the goal was to clean the armenian race, why didn’t they harm the armenians who were living in the western provinces of ottoman empire? it proves it wasn’t in order to eradicate a group of people because of their ethnicities, but their political view.

I'm from Mexico. I learned about this atrocity in the late 60's. It still shocks me that so few acknowledge that it ever took place. Love Armenia & the Armenians.
also learn about atrocities of France in Algeria & Rawanda... it will help u a lot
@@abdullahamabood5693 Maybe a lot more than you do , buddy. The FLN , however TERRORIZED the Algerian population to work for them. The FLN DID NOT win the war of independence. There were more than ONE MILLION of ' PIED NOIRS ' in Algeria , and they were an integral part of France. The reason General De Gaulle was called in by the French Establishment , was to make the severance of Algeria from France possible and palatable. Atrocities ? It was a SPIRAL of dirty work made by BOTH sides. The exit of PIED NOIR middle class from Algeria , sent that country into economic chaos , from which it took years to recover. Furthermore , Ahmed Ben Bella - who remained more time in prisons , both French & Algerian , than as a leader or President - did not get to work immediately after independence , but spent valuable time at international summits. That's when Col. Boumedienne took over. The following years were times of economic mismanagement , and then the terrible fundamentalist violence that shook the country. Rwanda ? An ancestral tribal hatred that spurred the atrocities of the late 90's , and where ALL foreign powers intervened , not only the French , who ARE NOT ANGELS , by the way , but to fingerpoint them as the cause for Africa's troubles is not only wrong , but DUMB , as well. The Africans have themselves to blame. The slave trade that began in the XVI Century , would never have been possible without African complicity. African tribes selling out members of their own tribes , or from rival tribes. As to Civil Wars , I can still remember the atrocious Nigerian Civil War of the late 60's. The Hausas decimating the Ibos. I'm still haunted by the awful photos of the Biafran malnourished children. It's YOU AFRICANS who HAVE TO PUT YOUR SHOW TOGETHER. Blaming others for your own misfortunes is not only wrong , but demagogic and cowardly. As for the ARABS , the Gulf Wars , the Assault on Libya , the rape of Lebannon , the aggression to Syria , and the horrible war in Yemen , would have never happened if you had been united. Nasser left a void , which has never been covered. Finally , Algeria & France have developed close economic , social & cultural ties that spill into politics. The French have to acknowledge that their Arab / African immigrant population has to be completely assimilated. France , in fact has always been a ' melting pot '. Algeria , by a bureaucratic stroke can impose English as their second language . However that will not move her away from the Mediterranean and to the bonds it holds with the French.

The WHOLE WORLD stood idly by , doing nothing. Do you happen to know how many people lived in what is now Mexico & Central America when the Spaniards arrived in 1519 ? Twenty - five million . After less than a century of colonization , that number had dwindled down into little more than one million. Do I blame Spain for it ? It's easy to do so , but that's the way ' civilizations ' come and go. Portugal , Spain , France , Britain and the USA aren't more guilty than the Ancient Chinese , Indians , Egyptians , Mesopotamians , Greeks , Romans , Mongols , etc. Unfortunately , that's the way humans treat other humans. Will we be able to move on as a species ? It doesn't look encouraging , more so in these days of pandemia , as well as global warming. Hope , comes as a result of hard work and conviction. I’m from southeast of turkey and I’m Kurdish . My great gran would tell stories about her Armenian friends in the village to my mum and aunts. She said we were all the same they spoke Kurdish and we did everything the same they were our sisters brothers mothers. It was around ww1 and she said when the soldiers would come to the village , we would try hide and if we couldn’t we would get slaughters and that there was a blood bath . She said she remembers the death of a pregnant women very clearly . They heated metal rods and stabed her in the belly from the back . There’s still villages near my village with people of Armenian decent and theirs also some survivors.
Kurds also participated in the Armenian Genocide.

They won't recognize the Armenian genocide to begin with because a lot of Kurds are now living on Armenian territory and if they recognized the genocide than they'll have to give reparations for all the property lost. @@HelloHello-fn3bn gives a nice justification to why u should remove every Armenian including children who dont know that some Armenians hundreds of miles away supposedly wanted to have their own nation ? The idea of Armenians killing turks in the hundred thousands is ludicrous? Armenians were 2nd class citizens chritians. If anyone it was the turks just liek the nazis did it so you can see it happening on film that something like this happens.
Literally look at turkish ideals compared to Armenians ideals? at the time? The turks wanted clear genocide. Armenians also were in favor of the young turks in the beginning. Who knows there might have been no conflict between the two but if you look at what Turks believed then they were racist against any one who wasn't Turk! That was their belief . The armenian genocide didn't just happen in an instant it took 8 years 1915-1923 with some masscares happening in the late 19th century.@@HelloHello-fn3bn
@@andremaster1752 Oh So now your claiming that Armenians never killed turks and kurds in hundreds of thousands?
And yet you never talk about Genocides commited by the West against their colonial subjects. In Congo alone, 10-15 million Congolese were killed by King Leopold of Belgium. And those people were treated far more worse than what you classify as 2nd class citizens. On the other hand considering that Armenians also held very high ranking positions is also an important factor. But you dont care because those people were not Europeans, they did not have any value whatsoever like the Armenians did. And lastly you dare to ignore all those massacres commited by the Armenians against the local Muslim Turks and Kurds. Also the Armenians would certinly not be viewied as friends considering that they joined the ranks of the Ottoman enemies and fought against their own government (Ottoman Empire). Fun fact the Russian army had Armenian battalions composed of more than 150,000 Armenians. They fought against their own government infavour of the enemy and guided them when they were invading the Ottoman lands and they sabotaged the Ottoman army and caused them to lose against the Russians in the Caucasus. Also their terrorist orginizations killed hundreds of top Turkish officials and diplomats. Also I would like mention that in 1896 Armenians took the Central Ottoman Bank in Constantinople and every one in it hostage. They threatened to blow up the places into ashes and after they were granted safe passage by France to France.
It is mind blowing to me how Turkey has gotten away with so many things throughout history, including the genocide against Armenians, Greeks and Assyrians. This act of evil will never be forgotten.

Why should we accept it? There is ethnic cleansing going on, but it would be a disaster for our country to accept it. There will also be compensation for our bad economy, and worst of all, they may demand land from us. Why should we risk these for no reason? Moreover, it is wrong to blame all Turks in these events. In addition, there are Turks killed by Armenians while occupying Anatolia, and these are as many as the Armenians who died. There is also the Mora genocide that the Greeks committed against the Turks when they gained their independence, and the massacres and genocides when they occupied Western Anatolia.
There are atrocities happening everywhere but the mainstream media highlights only what it needs to.
In Pakistan, many Hindu-Sikh girls are abducted, raped and converted by Pakistanis and yet no one dares speak of it. India decided to create a law named CAA which would give citizenship to these minorities suffering in neighbouring Islamic countries like Pakistan Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Yet everyone, even American media tried to portray Indian Govt as "fascist" for it and violent riots orchestrated by Indian Muslims occurred.
Kashmir region, the so called disputed region between India, Pakistan and China(it's Indian territory, Pak and China are illegal occupiers by every means) had a minority Hindu population and now it's much less. They had to flee.
In 1990, Pakistani funded terrorists along with the support of local Muslims, committed genocide on Kashmiri Hindus and ordered them to "Convert, leave or die."
Afghan Hindus and Sikhs took refuge in India and the Western countries too when Taliban took over.

I think only simpletons hate an entire nation of people. Personally as an Armenian, who’s grandfather survived this genocide, I still don’t hate Turks.... I hate the government though for hiding this atrocity and having to hear my grandfather (aged 9) or an entire ethnic group somehow deserved for their entire family to be tortured & killed . Its a sensitive topic as is the holocaust to Jews, but because it is not recognised by the Turkish government who sidelines the issues, we hear denial from Turkish people constantly which is painful. Although I understand this is what is taught to Turkish people (however spoken to many who recognise it as a genocide) and so don’t blame them for this, it’s not their fault. So my friend, we cool :D

Attack of Armenian Groups was just a lame excuse given by them to justify their genocide that they commited. I was going to comment this But decided not to as I afraid that what would be the replies. Armenians were a trusted and loved people by the Ottoman Empire. USSR decided to use them against Ottomans because they were, after all, orthodox christians. Playing into their religious beliefs and their desire to have their own country, Russians managed to sway Armenians to build 2 organisations; Dashnak and Hinchak. These organisations started to arm and provoke Armeninan population against the Ottoman Empire. Aftermath of these terrorist activities resulted in more than 2.000.000 Ottoman civilians' (including Armenians) death. Sending them away was the most polite thing to do after what they brought upon their own people. If this happened any other country, their punishment would have been much more severe. Soykırım filan olmadı, isyanlar yüzünden halkı Suriye'ye tehcir ettik sonrada yolda çeteler ve doğal sebeplerle öldüler. Şimdi diyeceksin "e yaşlı başlı adam yalanmı söyleyecek" adam orada tehcir ve yaşadıkları baskıyı anlatıyor. hiç "Türkler bizi topladı öldürdü" filan demiyor he evet bazı Ermeniler gereksizce ölmüş OLABİLİR o savaş ortamında. Ama soykırım olsaydı Ermeniler tıpış tıpış arşivlerini açardı. Hiç düşünmüyor musun acaba neden ermeni hükümeti arşivleri kilitli tutuyor?
thanks for saying that know that the same is from me and armenia we have forgived and if not we at least try to forget.
The same was told by muslims in Syria to Yazidi neightbors, and look what happened to Yazidis. Trust is earned!

@@radiwn9636 You can go to Yerevan and visit Tsitsernakaberd Memorial. Everyrhing is proven there. Turkey is guilty of murdering innocent Armenians. Love Armenia from Poland!
We remember, we can never forget, my heart breaks and I demand that Armenian genocide be recognized if we want to avoid genocides happening again.
@1915 Over and over again try. You cant,
No.

I’m Turkish and for awhile I never wanted to Admit that the Ottomans had committed something this evil and horrible but I must face the facts It was evil we did the wrong thing and have to accept it
Thank you
Ottomans gave Armenians milleti sadıka medal "trustful race" but they didnt even gave it to Turks it was Russia's crime to provoke Armenians
Yalan söyleme, sen türk değilsin
Shame on the deniers in this comment section
All my support and love to our arminian brother 💕♥️wish you all the best I am from tunisia north Africa 🇹🇳💐💐🌺🌷🌹🌼💕
India 🇮🇳 stands with Armenia.
@İlginç Mi İlginç The days of sword are over India defeated Pakistan 3 times Israel defeated Islamic coilation America defeated Iraq you would be violated brutally if you go to war with non Muslim countries
@vamsi krishna Who cares ? Turkey is not Islamic. Our issue is not about religion. Learn the real story. You think we relocated Armenians for no reason ? No. We were living together then at our weakest point where we were dealing with rebellions and WW1, they betrayed us and started killing civilians and burned down villages. What did you expect us to do ? Stand still while our people were being killed ? These events happened mainly in East so we didnt touch Armenians who were living in the West hence they are still here living in Turkey. Search about what first president of Armenia said. How he accepted first they started these things between us and Armenians. How he admitted they got help from Russia thinking they could get lands.
@Azmol Hossain That doesnt concern you. You are not even Turkish why are you here ? I do not worship Ataturk he is a human as well why would I ? Shut your mouth if you know nothing.
@@newbimalfoy9051 Don't you understand how stupid you sound you seemed brainwashed there's always reason for war many times they are created how about punishing culprits if what you are saying is true if they have committed such atrocities what about killing all Iraq people in ISIS affected areas you are in Muslim majority turkey even then don't play victim card there is no justification for killing families brothers raping and selling Armenian women (Ibn sauds child bride) see there is always justice sometimes it may come slowly for countries already the mighty ottoman empire is called the sick man of Europe there is long way for real justice for turkey and empires which genocided millions in the name of religion
@Azmol Hossain No I do not hate hijab. Why would I ? It a free choice.
Wherever islam is in the majority, this type of story is common with indigenious people Armenians in turkey zoroastrians in iran;Buddhists in Central Asia, hindus and Buddhists in afghanistan. Hindus in india
As an azerbaijanese, i felt so sad. I feel ur hurt🙏 god bless u. Stay strong.
u cant even write *Azerbaijani correct so u better keep ur mouth closed

Mal Ermenistana Düşmansını bide gelmissin ' i FeEl fOr ArMeNiAs'
What?
Not any Azerbaijan can say that? We know the best how cruel armenians are, how they murder children, even unborn babies.
That is how it works. Armenians got any privileges in our country and support armenia.
At the same time armenians still work on their fake genocide
Turks will watch this whole thing and sit there with a straight face and say “this never happened” 😂
These guys have not much to live, our evidence will be gone :(
There is enough written evidence, from the Austrian military, German, British, French and US military of this time. Their are thousands eye-witness accounts from foreign civil-servants and ambassadors. Never fall into the trick of the Turks to believe that we do not have enough evidence. There are thousands upon thousands of evidence pieces on this genocide
@@jaylight944 I agree, and the evidence sides with Turkey.. most of the Armenian evidence was withdrawn due to forgeries..
Turks managed to prove 3 times that Armenians did the genocide against Ottoman Armenians, the Armenian government back home actually agrees too, they wanted to create Greater Armenia, they thought they could win
@Tarık Mengüç we have but your rotten brain does not accept it
@Tarık Mengüç wow u have the second biggest brain in the world right now well done
@Areg SARKISYAN read all my posts, Armenia sides with Turkey, the Hunchaks and Dashnags were not Turks.. read Armenias manifesto written by the Armenian prime minister.. My links are those that won every case in the courts, including the documents related to forgeries and misleading the United nations... The end result is that Armenian Christians were a minority who were granted "Greater Armenia" in Treaty of Sevres, and Armenian Muslims refusal to hand over their homes lead to Dashnags and Hunchaks getting Russian training, taking up arms, and killing the Armenian Muslims who refused to leave their homes.. Armenians lost all 3 court cases, France, British, Germans, they all have proof in their historical archives that Turks are not at fault.. Even Taalat Pasha was framed by Germans, and Germans were supposed to be allied with Turks. The telegrams were German forgeries
CRIME OF THE CENTURY... ❤ TO ALL ARMENIAN SISTERS AND BROTHERS IN LEBANON, MAY ALLAH BLESS YOU WHEREVER YOU ARE... 🙏
I will show you a proof of document that there was no genocide. The document number FO 371/6504/E.8519 (13.07.1921) Letter from the British Embassy in Washington to the Foreign Office stating that no evidence of the Armenian genocide was found and there is no hope of finding any.
PROUD TO BE ARMENIAN🇦🇲❤️❤️
Are you a turkish armenian
My great grandfather had to escape that. he had 7 siblings and by the time they got out, only him and his older sister where left. The rest where eather killed or starved to death. I can't imagin what that felt like losing pretty much his entire family. I've never met him but I still feel sad when I think about it
@Carron Kuns wtf im live in the anatolia and i never see picke barrel lol u saying lies
I'm a zaza kurd and unfortunately my great grandfathers told stories about how they participated in the murder of Armenians. I feel very sorry for what happened and I hope our people will be able to live in peace next to eachother.
Haha Keep grieving kid
@@eren_gns and? shut up azergaycani there are hundreds of proofs of this genocide

Turkey has a video that has old people like this crying and explaining the atrocities they suffered from the Armenians when they sided with the Russians and started attacking, that’s the thing everyone watching this video and think it was one sided , every one talks about a genocide, but know one mentions about the Armenians switching sides with the Russians and thought against the Turks, and obviously this is a war people die , there’s a lot of evidence that not only Armenians but Turks and Russians died from illness hungar and freezing temperatures, but know one wants to look in to this , in 2010 Turkish prime minister erdogan in a UN speech said we will open our archives with over a million documents, Armenia can open there archives and the Russians and Britain can open there’s and we can bring in historians from across the word , and what ever the outcome we will accept he said , and do you know what Armenia said No , now why would you say No , unless you just want the genocide to stand on my say so .
Well at some points I agreed and at some points I did not. I am Turkish so from my point of view Russians attacked to Crimea because they assumed that they were allying with Germany same thing happened over and over but I dont have any negative feelings against Russians but where I agree with you is if they were sure that Turks killed them with no purpose in hand then why would they reject that proposal?
Sad😢
But why is it unknown
Because turkey denies it and spreads propoganda to avoid paying reparations and for other countries to not recognize it
May God bless Armenians forever🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻
I'm Algerian North African and I speak amazigh and French and English and I hope our Armenian brothers will thrive and be successful
I hope one day Armenian genocide will be recognized
May God bless you from Algeria north Africa with love to Armenia middle East
it hurts my heart, I am an Armenian girl in my senior years of high school, I attend a school with mostly white people. My class all laugh and deny the genocide. They do not understand how this is an extremely sensitive topic for me as it is apart of me.
my heart shattered while watching this video right after my classmates joked around about the topic of the genocide.
I have had enough of this unsensitive stubborn behaviour. As much as the things the Turks did has left me broken over 100 years later.
I do forgive them, As much as I want recognition as a Christian Nation I also see my duty in forgiving the Turks and also my confused classmates.
I hope this comment helps someone and I really don't want to start an argument because of this comment.
If you don't like what I'm saying than move on. I've had enough of hearing people hurtful comments. Sorry for my rant, and this is a wonderful video clip I hope one day I am brave enough to show my classmates without them making fun of it and being rude.
Armenians are white 😂😂😂🤦🏻♂️ then Greeks Albanians Italians aren’t white either don’t be a clown you are white
White Americans joke about communism too about Russians Germans Nazis etc not just genocide
