- As we saw in our Best Looking F1 Cars video, there have been some stunning F1 cars throughout the years. But there have been some we'd really rather not have to look at again...so of course we've made a video about them!
An ugly car doesn't necessarily mean a bad car though, as each of the cars in this list did manage to get at least one win under it's respective, unattractive, and ill-fitting belt.
From hideous raised noses to unsightly intakes to just plain ugly chassis, we take a look back through Formula 1's 70 years to uncover that you don't need engineering beauty to be a winner in F1.

I actually liked the Benetton B192 & B193 and think they looked purposeful and effective.

B192 is a classic, i love the higb nose cars, and the f2012 and fw34 is also super good looking

No, you're defo not the only one. I like 92 and 93 Benettons more than the 95 one, for example.
B197 is the prettiest Benetton of the era, maybe also B194 for its well proportioned compactness

He's repeatedly mentioned those high-nose cars as ones he hates so I'm not surprised, but I just can't see it. They remind me a bit of sharks - or fighter jets - with those noses. Yes, not the most beautiful F1 car, but among the ugliest race winning ones? Surely not.
What's wrong with you? There's nothing pretty about the car in question, other than the livery.

I would argue that more than half of the cars on the list aren’t ugly at all.
I agree. Pretty much any car from the mid 70s would be uglier or the 1995 McLaren or Williams FW26, or the 1976 Ligier... the list could go on. Most cars on the video look okay and some even look great.
I don't believe in an ugly F1 car (mind you 2014-2016 cars, pretend those never existed)
Fun fact: The Benetton B192 was the last manual transmission car to win an F1 race.
I drove that car in a test at Zolder - smashing through the gears was insane!

I actually like the 1996 Ferrari. I like the nose they used early in the season and I like the car's low and wide proportions.

B191 was the first high nose Benetton.
it wasn't even that high, there was just a gap between the bottom of the nose and top of the front wing, there's nothing wrong with a high nose car as long as the shape is okay and the underside doesn't look like it's bowing upwards towards the end

I honestly like the FW26. I remember picking it always in the F1 '04 game because it had such a cool nose.

Why does everyone always attack the Williams FW26 nose? I always thought it looked badass, compared to the generic looks the other 2004 cars had.

Agreed. It was the first thing i thought too when i saw it appear on this list. I actually think it's very goodlooking. Waaaay better looking than those weird things they drive nowadays

Correction. The first Benetton with a high nose was in 1991. Albeit lower than the b192, but still the first one.

Even as someone who starting watching F1 and thought they looked okay at the time, I’ve gotta say they’re pretty ugly these days
The 2012 Ferrari I personally love the look of, very distinct aesthetic, don't get why it get's brought up when the Mercedes or Force India worse looking noses in my eyes.

Kim Yo Jong's Sandwich F2012 was really bad. In qualifying it constantly got beaten by Red Bull, McLaren, Lotus, Force India and Williams of Maldonado. But F2012 was ok on race pace
Kim Yo Jong's Sandwich And in some races it was even faster than the red bull. Red bull had a lot of struggles with their 2012 car and in many races were off the pace.

The 192 wasn't the first high nose Benetton, the previous car the 191 was high also.
W196 was amazing to look at, and iconic, don't see it as ugly at all.

The open wheel 196 is nice. The one with all the bodywork is a mess and doesn't look like an F1 car.

I agree. I always liked the F310's sidepods, really striking and made it sort of look like an early style jet fighter.
Ferrari 126 CK from 1981. That car was a tractor with which only Gilles knew how to win.

i liked the 90s highnose , especially the schumi ferrari seemed a little like a fighter jet with those side pots on top
Idk I really liked the walrus front end of the 2003 Williams. It was something new and bold compared to the ugly high pointy noses of the day.
The part i’m confused is why autosport finds high noses and f1 cars from early 2010’s so bad and unattractive because most of them look pretty nice. Maybe it could be just me because i started watching f1 in early 2010’s
The cars from 2000 to 2008 were far better looking than the cars from 2009-2016

The McLarens, Red Bulls and the 2010 Ferrari all looked really pretty.
The 2009-2016 cars have the ugliest rear wings in the history of F1. Ridiculously high and narrow. It ruined the proportions of the cars in my opinion.
Fun fact pastor gave Williams their last F1 championship win in the fw34
The Ferrari F310, nose low or high I could never describe as an ug! OK, I'm biased, 1996 was my first full time season as an enthusiastic 12 Yr old fan, and I was a Schumacher fan boy for the next 10 years, but still objectively she was a curvey, quirky thing that brought out the best of Schuey as he hustled it around outpace the stand out Williams car on more than one occasion.

Autosport, you can’t say ‘It WAS a lot uglier’, you are a channel compiled of journalists and experts, not one person and do not speak on behalf of everyone, aesthetics are an opinion, not facts. I didn’t mind the 1996 Ferrari at all, as a kid, I know I’m probably part of a minority haha

That's the 97 car but if you're talking about the 96 high nose car that's the f310/2 which also really like.

This might be controversial but I think the McLaren MP4/10 is beautiful. The raised nose with a Mercedes badge reminds me of the Penske Indycars of that era.
I don't agree with plenty of these lol. I liked the high-nose Ferrari F310 AND the Benneton B192..and all of the cigar-style cars.
I dont get the hate for the high nose designs of the early benettons I genuinly love the look of them

You could put nearly every car from the last 10 years in this list and it would be full. The Benettons are not beautiful but they look fine. Same with most of the 60s cars.

the 1997 Ferrari addressed all of the ugliness of 1996, disagree that it was "hardly a stunner". It was so well proportioned and lines flowed so well. Smooth sidepods that blended into the monocoque, smooth nose, much lower side impact protection around the drivers head...
The T81 is gorgeous
There are 3 choices I TOTALLY disagree with : 1) The late Ferrari 310 being ugly. It's among my top 30 best looking F1 cars OF ALL TIME. I love the nose. It looks so much better than the earlier version, and everything about it, all angles, looked really great; 2) The Cooper T81. I think this is a MASTERPIECE. The open-wheel design stood out to me against all of its' rivals at the time - definitely top 15; 3) The Benettons of the 90s their noses and all (the trend made F1 cars at the time, in my opinion EVEN better) looked amazing, kudos to Sebastian Neumann for pointing out so well, my favourite being the '95 TurboMiester

The Ferrari 310b was a stunning car it was just a slow car the only reason why it was a race winner because the great Micheal Schumacher was behind the wheel I miss Micheal a lot

Most cars on this list are not really ugly for me, just a bit odd at best. The 2014 Red Bull and Mercedes would've made it onto my list because of their weird noses. Also the 2008 cars with way to much winglets like the McLaren and the Sauber are not great to look at too.

I found some of the cars incredible beautiful and the one you said are a beauty pretty boring (90s Williams are really boring while the Benetton looked aggressive and were a beauty in my eyes)

I normally agree with these top 10’s, but this one was so off in my opinion. I feel the 2014 red bull, 2015 Ferrari, 1996 Ligier-mugen-honda should have been on there instead of some of the 50’s/60’s cars

When Alonso won the Valencia Grand Prix in 2012 he led the championship with 111 points. His teammate Massa had 11 points.

The early 90s low nose cars are the worst the sport has had imo in terms of looks. High noses were a gift aesthetically
Good aerodynamics dont always look good. The Prius has the lowest drag coefficient of any production car.
